InDesign DOM Redesign and Redevelopment. I beg of you.

The architecture of InDesign's Document-object Model handling has always perplexed me.  What should be a simple, straight-forward hierarchy of parent-to-child cascading style control is instead a haphazard peer-to-peer asynchronous spaghettibowl—a wonderful tribute to Pastafarians worldwide, yes, but hardly a good-working model for production of publications.
I understand that when InDesign was being developed, Adobe did not yet hold a marketplace stronghold against competitors like Quark Xpress, and a seamless user experience between applications was key to get people to switch from one to the other. But it seems by doing so, Adobe shot itself in the developmental foot. Either that or there was simply no master plan for an overall framework for document object modelling.
It's because of this that I really propose Adobe come up with a new structure. But how to do it without bricking the many tens of thousands of *.indd files out there? How to transition without destroying what's already been built? It's much like the 710 freeway in South Pasadena: finishing a simple gap of highway that would enable the entire system to flow better would essentially have to destroy an entire community of homes established over 50 years. Yet without it, things are a mess. InDesign 5 files are already incompatible with previous files, so I don't see too much harm in bricking them again.
To illustrate my point, and the urgency, let me bring up the issue of Master Text Frames.  Anyone who's been using InDesign since the turn of the century has always seen the 'Master Text Frame' option on the 'New Document' window, hanging there pointlessly like a coccyx.  The reason for its existance has been the subject of much debate by several critiques ranging from independent design journalists to Lynda tutorial videos. Even though you can perform the same function by simply creating a text autoflow on a master page, it's still there as an option. And, as far as I know, it's an option impossible to toggle it any other menu-based means once the document has been created. This demonstrates that the feature's original purpose (as well-intended as it might have been originally) has been deprecated in the scheme of a bigger picture that's developed since then. We now have book files, template files, multiple masters, XML support, etc, etc... InDesign's original concept was all laid out during a period in history where we were transitioning out of the "Windows 98" peer-to-peer mindset of the 90's before returning to the time-tested server-client system. It's just better than peer-to-peer for not only internal networking but design structure.
If that doesn't convince you, let me ask a question: Suppose I wanted to apply a template file (or better yet, elements of one) into an existing InDesign document? Sounds crazy I know, but we do this all the time in the web design world. So imagine if instead of master pages being embedded within documents, they were actually external template files like *.css, with stylesheets and scripts built into them? And like web structures, imagine that they controlled things from a top-down hierarchy to all the styles in all child documents of all book files?
ie:
indt > indb > indd.
Simple.
Master object/paragraph/character styles and libraries (and any other attribute you can think of) would be defined in the master document templates. From there. In book file, you would choose which template masters you wish to be associated with that book, and this selection of templates would carry down to the connected child documents. Finally, the child documents would inheirit these styles or could have their own embedded styles which would override the master styles, if desired.
Now that I think of it, with this structure, indd files themselves would not even need to be touched for those people who don't want/need whole books. So mabye bricking things is unecessary.
Compared to the peer-to-peer chicken-or-the-egg manual syncroninzation scheme in the indb pallete, it would be a simple automatic system ensuring uniformity among all involved documents in the book! And these template files, since external, could be used for many book files, automatically updating all of them. And we would never have to deal with the dreaded "UGH! Why is this style folder resyncing itself in a different order, and why did that style reappear when I just erased it!?" syndrome forevermore.
InCopy could really become a truly useful application if done this way rather than a cheaper watered-down version of InDesign for editors. You could have a good chain of command between designer, editor, and typesetter. And it would be one step closer to seamless integration between print and web. If a better DOM manages to be produced, I have a feeling InCopy is going to go by the wayside, much like ImageReady.
So yes, I urge that a serious redesigning and redevelopment of InDesign's style / object hierarchy be looked at, for the sake of humanity!  I'm sure I'm not the first one who has thought of this. It just takes an executive decision somewhere in San Jose. Here's hoping. Cheers.

I think you misunderstand what a Book (.indb) file is. It's a collection of documents. It's not based on any template and it has no  attributes to speak of other than a list of pointers to the component documents and a record of pagination (maybe).
Yes, I noted that.. the indb books wouldn't hold the styles within them. It would only pass them from template to document collections.
Styles, swatches, master pages and pagination can be synchronized across the book, or not, as you decide.
Yes. That wouldn't be interfered with. You can still embed styles within documents, or have them passed down from templates. Like I said, what I'm proposing is only a way to feed styles top-down from templates. The way things work now, a template disconnects from the document the moment you load it. I'm saying it should retain its connection as a master page.
What I'm really proposing is the disengaging of embedded master pages and allow links for external master pages. Might as well make those the templates since we already have them.

  • I am working on a file I created in Indesign CC 2014 and when I try to rearrange pages in the Pages menu or try to package the file, I get the spinning wheel for 20 mins. then it crashes. What should I do?

Can anyone help? I started a 24 page document in Indesign CC 2014 and have been using the file off of a dropbox acct on my two machines (desktop and macbook pro). I need to rearrange some of the pages but when I try to drag and drop the pages in the Pages menu, I get the ominous spinning wheel...for about 20 mins at times. then It will just crash. The document doesn't have a tone of images. I've also tried to collect and package the file but get the same thing.
    What should I do?? Help!

try the script at Adobe Community: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.
I'd also try moving the pages to a new file, though I suspect that will crash too. Divide and conquer might work -- tray one of your operations on half the document at a time, then repeat by dividing any piece that fails, and so on, until you isolate a page, then use the same method to isolate an object (though it's possible you have a corrupt page).

  • Changing the size of fonts in InDesign's menus and toolbars?

Is it possible to change the size of fonts in InDesign's menus and toolbars? I'd love for the Control Panel at the top to be a bit easier to read.

Thanks Bob, didn't see it anywhere but figured it was worth asking. I think the size is a little biased toward people with better vision than me but I guess I'll have to live with that.

  • I am running InDesign CS5.5 and trying to open an In Design File but getting an error message. " Cannot open the file "PDavidLCover.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file

I am running InDesign CS5.5 and trying to open an In Design File but getting an error message. " Cannot open the file "PDavidLCover.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file me be open in another application."Please help I really need to get this file open.

Since you've shown us the folder contents it's a good bet it isn't in use (no lock file). And it doesn't look like the file is mis-named as there doesn't seem to be anything else there that would be the .indd file (but just in case, open it in TextEdit and paste the first few lines here so we can see what the file header says), so the most likely case is the file is damaged. Is that on a removable device of some sort?
You can try the tool at Repair corrupt InDesign Adobe files on Mac OS X  or send me a link to the file by private message and I'll try the recovery tool I have for Windows.

I have a subscription to Adobe CC but none of these work on this so I was on with Adobe for 5 hours trying to install and launch Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Muse, and Acrobat Pro from CS6. Well, InDesign is the only one that works and I have a ton of work due! I don't have a serial number for Photoshop or Illustrator except for CS3, and they don't work. InDesign gave me no problems. Illustrator says it can't work on this machine. Photoshop needs a serial number. I'm stumped and getting anxious and freaked out. Can anyone help? Adobe Chat is down right now.

  • Printing to PDF Crashes InDesign, Word, Publisher and more

    Hello,
It was recommended by someone in the InDesign forums that I post my issue here, as my problem seems to be spanning through all programs that are capable of printing to PDF.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I have 8gb of DDR2 ram in my machine at work. We are running Creative Suite 4.
I am a prepress designer, so much of my day is spent taking customers files, and converting them into printable PDF files for our machines. My problem is that throughout the day, printing to a PDF will completely freeze my computer. In InDesign, when printing to a PDF file, I will get the progress bar that says, "downloading font, flattening image, etc." Usually, when the progress bar gets to "Downloading Procset," a window comes up that allows me to choose a name and location to print my PDF to. Occasinally, InDesign will completely freeze up at this point, with no option to save. The only thing I can do at this point it end the program through the task manager. When this happens, it also affects Word, Publisher, etc. I can get all the way to the print dialog box, but as soon as I click on Properties, the entire thing freezes up. Sometimes this issue starts from InDesign as described, and sometimes it originates in Word, Publisher, etc.
Even after closing and reopening the programs, I cannot print to a PDF. My only solution is to completely restart my computer. I have been doing this 4-8 times a day for 2-3 months now.
I did some digging, and found that once the PDF printing fails, it puts a document in my PDF printer queue called "Local Downlevel Document." It shows the status of this file as Spooling, and I am not able to delete or cancel the job. It's properties show as 0 byes, 0 pages, datatype raw, and processor Winprint.
I've gotten suggestions to Export to PDF or print to postscript and distill. While these fixes work after the PDF printing fail, it still does not return functionality to any of my other programs that require PDF printing.
Another issue that arises when this happens, is that I cannot print any PDF file to any physical printer. When I open a PDF file, and click print, it instantly freezes. This, as well, is fixed by restarting.
There is no pattern to when this happens. It seems to be completely at random.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

This is a user to user forum, not Adobe support
That means that the only way someone is going to be able to help is if they have experience with your software and how Acrobat intereacts
I can't help, but hopefully someone will come along and read your message who is able to help
I do not see that you posted your exact version and update level for Acrobat
Since Win7 64bit is still fairly new, you MAY have a problem of not having the latest Acrobat update... and you may also have something like an out of date video driver

  • InDesign CS4 Export and PDF Printing Problem

Whenever we print PDFs created from InDesign CS4 documents that contain transparencies, drop shadows or gradients we've been having issues. White boxes will appear instead of the drop shadows and transparencies, and the colors of the gradient images will be completely different from what's in the original file. Of course, the PDF always looks perfect on the screen, and the .indd document prints correctly. The problems only occur when we print the PDFs.
We create the PDFs in InDesign using the File>Export function, and we've tried every version of PDF compatibility from 4 to 8. We're not exactly sure if this is an InDesign issue or an Acrobat issue, but we wanted to check and see if there's something specific we need to do doing during the exporting process to prevent this from happening.
Our IT department has been working on this but they're stumped, and the fine folks at Xerox insist that our printers are "fully operational."
We quickly looked through previous postings and didn't see another problem like this one listed, but we apologize if this has already been addressed and we are posting the same issue twice.
Any suggestions or insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Bob! I followed the information the links you provided and it solved our problems! I won't bore you with the details of how long how many different people have been trying to solve this issue, but let's just say it's a lot.
You are being virtually hugged and/or high-fived by our entire Communications, IT and Printing Departments. THANK YOU!

  • Radio buttons (from Indesign) get larger and overlap when fields are highlighted in Acrobat X

I have created my first set of interactive forms using Indesign CS6 Buttons and Forms dialog box. As the formatting of the fields does not seem to carry over, I have left the text boxes as Indesign objects and added text fields over the top of them in Acrobat X. I also intended to add drop down menus in Acrobat instead because I didn't like how the Indesign list box behaved in Acrobat (having to click through each item rather than dropping down the entire list). There does not seem to be a way to add a drop down menu item from within Indesign. (Or if there is, can someone please point it out? :-) )
However I used the sample buttons supplied within Indesign to create radio buttons and check boxes (which automatically included the graphics for the different states). On my first test export to Acrobat it appeared that the buttons retained their formatting, but something rather strange is happening when the fields are highlighted, whereby the buttons enlarge and overlap each other. Very frustrating I must say! I have just about gone nuts trying to find a solution. I've tried several different button options from the sample set; I've created them from scratch within Indesign; I've attempted to resize the fields in Acrobat form editing mode, but this screws up the original buttons. I also have found that once selected in Acrobat, I cannot deselect them again. (Don't know if this is significant info but it may point to some kind of stacking problem??)
Anyway, to make it clearer here are some screen captures:
    1. Form as it looks when opened in Acrobat X. The two different check box styles are from me experimenting in trying to fix this issue. But they all seem to behave the same way once highlighted.
    2. Form when interactive fields are highlighted. The text fields are perfect but note the big ugly overlapping circles... :-(
And some further explanation of how I created the buttons and their issues:
I would very much appreciate some guidance on what I'm doing wrong here, as my poor little head is going to explode very shortly (and my client is getting pretty annoyed at the delay!!)
    Thank you in advance :-)

I am having the exact same problem. I can't find a way around it. It seems that they included some states like normal, rollover, and click—but they didn't include a highlighted state. So when highlight fields is on it just shows the generic standard check box, which looks ridiculous if you have customized it at all in inDesign. I read a lot of people saying they can't find a way to change the highlight state—anyone out there have any answers?

  • Indesign CS3, 5 and 5.5 are installed, but only CS3 will open

Indesign CS3, 5 and 5.5 are installed, but only CS3 will open. CS 5 and 5.5 versions seem to be opening but then "quit unexpectedly." Any ideas on how to get 5.5 to open and to be default version? Thanks!

OS 10.6.8, we are in a college marketing office, and another in the office has the same setup, also with the 3 versions of InDesign. He's not having this problem. This has been a problem on this iMac since 5 and then 5.5 were installed.
What happens is that when you open the applications from the dock or applications folder, 5 and 5.5 seem like they're opening, but then the "quit unexpectedly" message. Here are screen shots: Thanks for any clue to this odd behavior.

  • File size comparisons, InDesign CS3, CS4 and CS5?

    Hi, all.
It seems there was a trend for several major releases where each time Adobe released a new version of InDesign and InCopy, average file sizes grew by 20% or so from the old release to the new release, at least back in the older CS days. Has this trend continued, such that file sizes in CS4 are substantially larger than file sizes from CS3, and CS5 files are substantially larger than those from CS4?
Adobe, of course, wants to keep writing functionality that will keep the user community coming back to buy in to upgrades. The added functionality sometimes comes at a cost beyond the price tag. If file sizes are larger in a newer version, then page saves over a network or to a database are likely to be slower, and user productivity takes a hit while users are waiting for files to be saved.
Has anyone done any testing to build the "same" page in multiple versions of InDesign to understand what the effect is on the file sizes? I'm specifically interested in the file sizes between InDesign CS3, CS4 and CS5. To be meaningful, the test page would have to be at least moderately complex, with a couple of photos, multiple text elements and so forth. By "same," the page wouldn't take advantage of new functionality in newer versions but would be saved as a native page of the current version, though the file sizes may be bloated by the new functionality like it or not.
If you've done any testing along these lines, I'd like to hear more about it.
    Thanks.
       Mark

The overall structure of ID's files have been exactly the same for -- as far as I can see back -- CS. No change at all, in there.
There have been significant additions to the 'global' spaces; stuff like InCopy user data, table styles, object styles, and cross references. Each of these add a major chunk of data to each file, whether you use it or not, plus a few bytes per object (again, whether you use them or not -- ID also needs to know where you did not use them, that's why). I think these might be the main source of 'global' file size increase (a single object style in one of my files, for example, eats up a healthy chunk of 11,482 bytes).
For the rest, all new stuff like 'span columns' is a handful of bytes per paragraph style. Tracking changes may very well double the size of text runs -- but 1 character takes up 1 byte of storage (plus perhaps some overhead of indicating its 'tracking' status). Any single measurement unit always uses 8 bytes at least (for example, the left inset for a column span -- even if it's not used, or set to 0pt).
I think we're talking about a couple of K's here (oh -- perhaps a max of a hundred or so), in a file format that has been designed around the concept of "disk pages", each 4K big, meaning that sometimes adding one single character to a text box increases the file size by 4 K.
Your idea of comparing the size of a file created in CS3 against the same saved as CS4 and as CS5 is certainly feasible -- I might try it some time, just to confirm it's purely the extra 'new objects' data that accounts for the size increase and to confirm my guesstimates of the number of Ks involved.

  • Indesign CS4/CS3 and Export to PDF problems

    Hello,
I have been having problems with both Indesign CS3 and CS4 and exporting large documents to a PDF-file. Exporting halts with error messages like: "Failed to Export the PDF file" in CS4 or "Error encountered while reading JPEG image" in CS3.
Problem can be corrected by simply closing InDesign and restarting it and opening the same file again. It appears that problem occurs more often the file is large. Any suggestions how to fix this problem?
I'm using Vista 64-bit and have 8GB memory.

Handling of missing links HAS changed, and in my opinion for the worse, but at the request of users, so that missing links no longer open the Links panel automatically or ask you to update on opening as they used to, though you should still receive a warning that the links are missing UNLESS YOU HAVE TURNED IT OFF IN YOUR PREFERENCES. It's on by default and you will find the option under the file handling section.
The rationale is that many workflows do not require that links be intact to accomplish the current editing, and longer documents with hundreds of missing links used to take many minutes to open while ID searched, essentially costing those users lots of money.
IF you have stored the links in the same directory as the .indd file, and IF you have moved the entire directory and IF you have enabled finding missing links when opening files, InDesign will find and update the locations for the links when the file is opened. If ID is unable to locate a link, because it is not in the current directory or a subfolder, you will see a warning message (in the past you would have had the option to browse for the missing files), and you must open the links panel if you wish to fix them manually.
In my opinion this is a very acceptable situation, and a great benefit to all types of workflows. I need to know links are modified or missing, so I've left that enabled. Those who don't need to know are no longer bothered or delayed. I suggest you pay a visit to the preferences and make sure that missing/modified checks are enabled, and if you are still having problems then your links aren't stored in the same directory, and that has always been an issue in ID when things get moved.

    Hi everybody
I try to ask one silly Q.
Where can I get this document.
I found many references but no link :(

There is no document titled "InDesign Server Installation and Configuration Guide". This was an error in the CS2 version of Introduction to InDesign Server.
You'll find the CS2 version of Introduction to InDesign Server in the InDesign Server CS2 ESD (the server download bundle). Even better you'll find the CS3 version in the InDesign CS3 Server SDK. Available at the following URL:

The information about Java/CORBA is specific to CS3, but the information about scripting and SOAP applies to CS2.

  • InDesign CS6 Extension and JSON

    Hi everybody
I'm just building up an InDesign CS6 Extension and would like to use JSON. JSON should be native with Flash-Players > version 11 but if I set the Flex Compiler -> Flash Player Options to version 11.0.0 the JSON-commands still won't be recognized (I get an error while using JSON.stringify() ). I'm using the Extension Builder 4.5 SDK. Are there any options I din't set yet or is it not possible to connect to JSON natively with Extension Builder 4.5 SDK?
    Thanks for any information
