Ingres to Oracle Migration (Database Events)

I am currently working on an Ingres II to Oracle 8.1.6 migration
project. The client OpenROAD 3.5/03 application makes extensive
use of Ingres database events.
Put simply we have a single master process which services
requests for orders from a number of child processes. There is a
desire to minimise the degree of code changes when migrating the
application. OpenROAD provides the
DBSessionObject.RegisterDBEvent and RaiseDBEvent methods which
make underlying calls to the Oracle DBMS_ALERT package.
The problem we have stems from the fact that Ingres database
events are broadcast to all sessions registered as having an
interest, much like the Oracle alerts. However, Ingres events
are retained in a queue whereas the Oracle alert messages, if
unread, are simply overwritten.
I feel the best solution would probably be to use the Oracle
DBMS_PIPE package and build dedicated pipes between each
master/child session. However, OpenROAD does not appear to
provide an interface to this package.
Does anyone have experience of this problem or have any
suggestions? I'm looking for information on how other sites have
successfully migrated between the two products. I did find a
migration toolkit but it seems to avoid the issue of database
events.
Many thanks,
Max

hello,
I am interested on the architecture which you set up to see how
you reach a base ORACLE from OPENROAD or ABF applications. Have
you planned to pass in OPENROAD 4.1? do you know the GATEWAY CA?
Thanks in advance,
Didier

  • How to migrate data from oracle 9i database to new machine 11gr2 RAC ASM

    Hi Expert
I need your expertise to advise me what is the best method to move data from oracle 9i database to new machine running oracle 11r2 RAC database with ASM.
Currently my production server running on HPUX ORACLE 9I database with normal file system. My new server is running SUN SOLARIS SPACR 64 bit ORACLE 11gr2 RAC with ASM. What is best method to move data over so it will be consistent. Any guide can refer.
    Regard
    William

    Hi William,
See the note in metalink Migration of Oracle Database Instances Across OS Platforms [ID 733205.1] to saw the Endian Format of your OS. If is the same you can use the RMAN to convert the database to another OS, if not the only option is using export/import (Transportable Tablespaces).
To upgrade from 9i to 11g, see the note 837570.1 - Complete Checklist for Manual Upgrades to 11gR2.
To migrate your FS to ASM the only way is using RMAN, so see the note - How to move a datafile from a file system to ASM [ID 390274.1].
    Hope this help you.

  • Migration from Oracle 9i database to 10g in ECC5

    Hi Experts,
We are planning to move our production system which is currently running ECC5 on AIX OS and Oracle 9i database to AIX OS and Oracle 10g database.
Some doubts regarding the above procedure:
1)Is there any possibility of SAP system migration from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g. If yes, do we need to perform any addinitional steps for that?
2)If the above condition is OK, then what type of system copy should we need to follow: Homogeneous or Heterogeneous? Heterogeneous system copy is ususally done incase of system copy involving different databases. Does that apply for differnt versions too like Oracle 9i and 10g?
    Any response is highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sanjay

If i'm using the dbua then the above issue will be solved by dbua itself?Well, DBUA will only perform a sanity check on your current release and if it doesn't pass it will fail. In other words DBUA will not upgrade your 9i release to the proper compatible release that you have to do before upgrading to 10R2.
Personally I never used DBUA, I always prefer manual upgrades, DBUA is good for you bcz it will not allow you to miss any step while upgrading.
What is the size of the database which you are going to upgrade?

  • Migrate Oracle 9i Database to Oracle 10g Solaris Platform

    Hi DBAs,
Thank you very much all of you, you helped me in RMAN Duplicate Database, There was a problem in my backupset and now it has been resolved.
    I have now following task.
I want to migrate Oracle 9i Database to Oracle 10g ASM, both are on Solaris platform. Please provide me step by step solution. I have very big Database about 250G Database.

In the "Complete checklist for manual upgrades to 10gR2" is written:
    PREREQUISITES
    =============
+ Install Oracle 10g Release 2 in a new Oracle Home.
+ Install the latest available patchset from Metalink.
+ Install the latest available Critical Patch Update.
... so "Install the latest available Critical Patch Update" step is that for the Oracle 10g database Oracle Home or Oracle 9i database Oracle Home ? I think that is for the 10g database/ Oracle Home ...
after applying the CPU pacht there is some "Post Installation Instructions":
3.3.5 Post Installation Instructions which demande a connection to the database:
    3. For each database instance running out of the ORACLE_HOME being patched, connect to the database using SQL*Plus as SYSDBA and run catcpu.sql as follows:
    cd %ORACLE_HOME%\CPU\CPUJan2007
    sqlplus /nolog SQL> CONNECT / AS SYSDBA
    SQL> STARTUP
    SQL> @catcpu.sql
    SQL> QUIT
My question is ... If I want to upgrade a 9i database to 10g and I apply this CPU before the upgrade is done (to 10g Oracle Home), how could I connect to an instance which is not present to run this script ? ... is this step mandatory or is optional ?
    Thanks,
    P.

    Bijit,
This forum is for questions about migrating from non-Oracle databases to Oracle and not for Oracle to Oracle migrations.
You should open a thread in the Database Upgrade forum -

If Access2000 allows you save the database as an access97 database then you can use the Oracle Migration Workbench to do the conversion. Sorry, Im not the Access expert so I can't say for sure whether the save as 97 option is shipped with 2000. I'll look into it and post a definitive answer tomorrow.

  • Data Migration from MS   Excel Sheet to Oracle 9i Database

Can anyone please help me to perform a data migration from MS excel sheet to Oracle 9i Database. I have an excel sheet from which i need to move data to the database. One of the columns in the sheet posseses multiple new line characters, and which causes a problem while migrating data with the help of SQL Loader. I would like to know whether any utility is available to migrate data directly from MS Excel sheet to the database, or it would he really helpfull for me , if anyone provide me with an alternate solution.

I think Christian's suggestion will work for easily and quickly.
    1) create table link of Oracle target table in MS Office's ACCESS thru ODBC;
    2) from Access screen, you may easily dump the excel data into the linked table.
This is very easy and feasible ways. Don't bother to find other ways. The other ways will need you to clear the unwanted carriage return signs first.

  • Oracle Migration Workbench : import sqlserver database into exiting schema

    Dear Oracle users,
I have to migrate several databases from MSSQL 2000 to Oracle 10g.
To perform this task I use the oracle migration workbench, which works great for that purpose.
My only problem is that the Oracle Migration workbench creates alsways a new
tablespace with the same name than the sqlserver-user I use to export the database.
I would like to import the converted database into an already existing schema of my Oracle database.
Does someone know how to do that ?
    Best regards,
    Daniel

Change the name of the SQL server user to the name of an oracle tablespace name. This should create the tables in the Oracle tblspce you want.
