Initial setup of iMac's for business

I recently purchased several iMacs for our business to replace our old Dell desktops.
Since these are going to be work computer and not personal, what would be the best practice during initial setup and registration? Should I register them all up under my name? or is there a option to register under company profile? Along with that, how would each iMac be identified/named on the network?

I think there is even an option to skip registration altogether by pressing Command-Q.
As far as the network identification: On each Mac go to System Preferences and open Sharing. You will see an option for Computer Name. This is the name that will be visible on the network. It would be a good idea to make a spreadsheet in advance where you work out the naming convention for all workstations on your network, then enter the names you decide on into each Mac's Computer Name.
I agree it is a good idea to also set each Mac's hard drive name in a manner consistent with both the other workstations and each Mac's Computer Name, so that each machine and its drives are easy to identify when being browsed over the network in a list with the rest of the machines.
The Computer Name is the "entry point" for each Mac when someone browses your business's network. Logging in to a Computer Name then reveals the volumes shared by that Mac, including the boot drive and any additional hard drives inside the machine or attached externally, which is why consistent naming is important.
Getting the Computer Name right is also important because many other Mac sharing services are tied to it. If you set the Computer Name of a Mac to "receptionist", then people browsing the network will see services (if enabled) like
receptionist (in the Finder sidebar as a Mac with File Sharing/Screen Sharing on)
*receptionist's iTunes Library*
*receptionist's iPhoto Library*
*HP Printer@receptionist*
*Epson Fax@receptionist*
and so on.

  • How determine best initial setup (resolution, etc.) for printing photo

Have worked with older versions of photoshop, now working towards bettering overall skills, and using Photoshop CS4.   Would like to ask about how to setup an image initially, when first click File > New
Typically will be "photoshopping" jpg images, from 12 mega-pixel camera, and want to print color photos at max resolution, at local photo printer.  Am using Windows 7 PC, 64bit (maybe not relevant?).  So question is… how do you know what to enter for settings.
Example.  Working now on an image to print as a 16” x 20” photo, at whatever would be highest/best resolution.  But don't want to create a massive file with overkill resolution that far exceeds what the original picture has in it.  So, what would be best settings to fill in the blanks below?  Thanks for any quick/direct insights, plus any basic articles that cover this...
    File > New
    Preset:                   Custom
    Width:                    ___ in   (16?)
    Height:                   ___ in   (20?)
    Resolution              ___ pixels/inch
    Color Mode             ___
    Background Color   ___

Before we get into the specifics, I want to ask "why" you're doing File - New to work on photos (opposed to just File - Open).
Generally speaking, for doing photo or other editing you want to work at or higher than the pixel count you'll want to print at.  Even with inkjet printers, there are actually visible differences right up to about 600 ppi, though most folks feel 300 ppi is sufficient for a good print.  Somewhere on this forum I wrote up a post where I tested a highly detailed image printed at various ppi levels then examined the results critically with a loupe and took macro photos.
    My recommendations / opinions:
I suggest rather than trying to manage ppi early in the process that instead you think in pixels.  I've even changed my rulers to measure in Pixels by default, so my File - New menu shows me the pixel counts.  Think in pixels while editing, but keep in mind your ultimate use for the image.
If you're just doing photo editing, and not trying, for example, to put together a collage or something, but looking to print one photo, here's a suggestion:
    1.  Open the image at the camera's native resolution or higher if your computer is powerful enough.  What I mean by this is if you open a raw file through Camera Raw, consider choosing one of the upsampled resolutions.  I open my Canon 40D files at 6144 x 4096 pixels, for example.
    2.  Do your photo editing at the pixel size at which you opened the image.  In other words, don't do things that resample it.
    3.  Only consider resampling to match the needs for output.  For example, if you're going to print the file, you may not need to resample at all - just let the printer driver do it and see how that works.  But if you're going to publish on the web, you will probably want to downsample the image.  But do this after you've saved your master file (if you're going to save a copy).  Consider the downsampling preparation for output.
In your example, if I were prepping a photo for 16" x 20" output, I'd do this:
    1.  Open my raw file at 6144 x 4096 (the largest Camera Raw will emit)  x 16 bits/channel.  Some quick mental math says that the print ppi will work out to the vicinity of 300ish, which is good for an image that size.
    2. I'd set the Image size of the smaller side in the Image Size dialog to 16" height WITHOUT resampling.  The other side will show as 24", indicating the image will need to be cropped, I'd then crop to 20" on the longer side, again making sure not to resample.
    3.  I'd do my various editing steps without resampling, and sharpen near the end.  The order of steps 2 and 3 isn't really important.
    4.  I'd then do File - Print.
The thing to do is if you're unsure of things, just try them and do test prints, and use your own judgment about what looks better.  Don't assume you HAVE to do things a certain way because of what others say.  You might just find a workflow that works for you and gives you dynamite results with your ways of working and your equipment and software.
    Good luck.

  • Initial setup of corporate phones for Intune - how to deal with initial account required

    Hi,
I'm running an Intune trial and have a question about new phones for corporate users - I find it irritating that a Microsoft account or an AppleID is needed to download the company portal app. For example the Nokia 935 with Windows 8.1 doesn't allow
me to sign in to the Windows store using my corporate Office 365 account, if I proceed without a Microsoft account to the store and try to install the company portal app, I get an error message about "My Family setup is needed" first.
I'm thinking of creating a Ms or Apple account for each user and use that to enrol their devices, but that doesn't seem ideal. Ideally I just want to deploy the Company portal app.
    What's the recommended approach?
    Thanks

I understand what you mean, but in this case the application installation is not the issue, it's signing up for an Apple ID that's the issue.  Here's an example of questions that come up, keep in mind these are company owned phones:
It's asking for a credit card, what do I do?  (I know that usually there's an option of none, but sometimes there's not)
What should I put for address and phone numbers?
This is a company phone, why is it asking for my best friend in second grade?
I already have a personal Apple ID, should I use that on my corporate owned phone?
    What's my password?
    What's my username?
I don't want Apple to have my email address, why are you making me do this?
I don't have time for this, why is this taking so long (enrolling an iOS device in Intune is very easy and quick, signing up for an Apple ID can be complex and difficult for an older person that can barely use a computer)

  • Initial setup of triple store for use with Jena

I have an instance of Oracle 11g that I want to use as the Persistent data layer for Jena. Can anyone point me to a good tutorial covering this?
I'm quite confused as to whether there's anything on the database server itself I actually need to configure, or whether I can just go to town creating models directly via the Jena API.
    Thanks from an oracle noob,
    joe

For 11g server, there is no need to configure anything special to the database to use Jena. (Of course, you need to do catsem11i.sql and then invoke sem_apis.create_sem_network...)
On the client side, you do need to download Jena Adaptor 2.0 (see the following links)
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/semantic_technologies/htdocs/documentation.html
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/semantic_technologies/index.html
After than, just include sdordfclient.jar in your classpath together with ojdbc5.jar and Jena
    libraries.
The following readme has some code snippets.

  • Two iPhones, Two computers, one for home, one for business.. Best iCloud setup?

Hey, I am about to upgrade to iPhone 5; meaning I can dump my office Blackberry and use my iPhone 4 for work instead; so my setups will be:
    Home: iMac, iPhone 5, iPad
    Business: Windows laptop, iPhone 4
So my iPhone 5 for home docks with the iMac; the iPhone 4 docks with the Windows laptop; and both are run as independently as possible, with very different apps.
Initially I planned to get a new Apple ID for my Business iPhone, so that I could have bookmarks synced between my Windows laptop and iPhone 4.
However, I realised that - as I use my existing iCloud account for my calendar - I would not have any Home calendar events in my iPhone 4, so for example, wouldn't be able to book appointments for business whilst being sure I didn't have holidays from my Home calendar stored there.
So now I'm thinking of using the same, existing iCloud account on both phones. I will have to lose bookmark syncing on the work phone, but at least I'll have both calendars on it as well.
What do you guys think is best? Any other ideas?

My wife and I share the same iTunes account. How do I setup a separate account for her? Can I do it using my iMac?

Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

  • Issues when trying to setup alternate sync location of OneDrive for Business / SharePoint 2013 Libraries

    Hello,
I have an issue that prevents me from choosing the alternate location of sync'ed OneDrive for Business folders. I'm trying to setup an alternate location for synchronization, using the guidelines found in the Office support web site.
The option to replace the default sync location appears the first time a SharePoint 2013 Library or OneDrive for Business is setup for synchronization.
Here would be a link to a snapshot (since my account has not been verified): /Forums/getfile/443247
At this point, the Library or personal OneDrive folder syncs correctly and the files are stored in the alternate choosen location.
However, on when trying to setup an additionnal Library for synchronization, the alternate sync location has not been saved and reverts to the default sync location. Furthermore, the option to replace the default sync location does no longer appear
    on the dialog box.
Here would be a link to a snapshot (since my account has not been verified): /Forums/getfile/443249
I have tried by first sync'ing a SharePoint 2013 Library (instead of the personal OneDrive for Business folder) with the same result. Meaning that the first SharePoint 2013 Library correctly sync's in the alternate location of my choosing. However,
any subsequent attempts to sync either a SharePoint 2013 Library or the OneDrive for Business folder results in them being sync'ed to the original default location in a folder under the user's profile directory.
    I'm using Office Professional Plus 2013 (64bits). The version of Groove.exe is 15.0.4605.1000 (12th March 2014 - 13 383 360 bytes).
Is there something I'm missing ?
Thanks for any help on this issue.

    Hi SpringComp,
You can change the root path for libraries you sync to your computer, though you can do this only if you’re not currently syncing any libraries. If you’re already syncing at least one library and you want to change the path, you must first
stop syncing all libraries. Then, the first time you run the OneDrive for Business wizard to sync a library to your computer, you’ll see an option to change the location.
More information, please refer to the link:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/support/change-the-location-where-you-sync-sharepoint-libraries-on-your-computer-HA102893480.aspx
    I hope this helps.

  • HT5622 I did not choose "use icloud" option for my initial setup.  so, it is creating for not enough space in my ipad.  How do I go back and set up icloud to store data?

I did not choose "use icloud" option for storing during my initial setup.  How can I reset icloud account, so it can be used for storing.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you are planning on using iCloud to store files, forget about iCloud and use a cloud storage service like SkyDrive or Dropbox. iCloud is focused on information sync between the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac and PC instead of storing files like MobileMe. It's not worth using iCloud for this.
If you still want to set up iCloud, open Settings > iCloud, log in with your Apple ID and follow its steps

Have base station and added extender for downstairs. Worked great upon initial setup, but now it won't connect despite an "excellent" signal. All i get is a blinking amber light; only get green if I bring it into the same room as the base. Both units are the latest models; purchased 2 months ago. What's wrong? Thanks!!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a minute
Power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for a few minutes
Now locate the AirPort Express about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage, and report on your results.
The more that you can minimize obstructions between the AirPorts like walls, ceilings, etc. the better the wireless will operate.

I am doing setup on new iMac, we have the old iMac asking for a Keychain Password for com.apple.smig.
Does anyone know what this is? What is it looking for?

Has anyone else figured this out? I'm getting it on every machine I upgrade and I have about 18 more to go and would like to fix it.
These are brand new iMac's shipped with Mountain Lion. I turn them on and the third screen asks if you want to transfer items from a backup or another Mac. I choose another Mac. Then use Migration Assistant on the users old machine (running Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and then let it transfer all of their files.
At just about the end of the transfer the new Mac pops up this error and waits until an action is taken. I've tried every password it could have been on the previous users machine to no avial. The only option appears to be hitting cancel and movi ng on but I'd like to know what is breaking when this happens becase the machines exhibit a strange spinning wheel hang when logging in afterwards?
Here's a screen shot of the new iMac and the problem:
