Initialization for char data type?

I observed that as String I can declare something like this:
String str = ""; but for char data type, if I declare:
char ch = ''; the compiler will have an error: "empty character literal". So how can I fixe this problem when I want to initialize my char variables as "empty"? Anyone got an idea?

Strings (and StringBuffers/Builders) are collections* of characters - so it makes
sense to be able to refer to a String with precisely zero characters. But char is not a collection of anything - it has whatever value it has and can never
be empty.
*collections with a small 'c'.

  • The type initializer for 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection' threw an exception. InnerException: Requested registry access is not allowed.

    I have read some of the other posts for people that got this error, but none seem to apply to me.
    My program has been working for weeks.  I made some minor changes, and started getting the error (full details below).
    I did a TFS "undo pending changes" and still getting the same error, even after logging off.  The one odd thing is that I did change my Windows password this week. The connection string is using a SQL user id and password that has no issues.
    I'm an Admin own my own box (running WIn XP SP3).  I even tried "Run as Admin" on Visual Studio.
    I'm doing a Debug-Start, running a Console-Test-Program that calls a WCF service, which on local machine is hosted by "ASP.NET Development Server".
    We have two other developers, one has the same problem, one does not.  In theory, we have all done "get latest" and are running the same code.
    The SQL Connection is related to a trace database; we are using this library http://ukadcdiagnostics.codeplex.com which has worked fine for months.
    When I do "Start Run" in Visual Studio, I get this error:
    {"The type initializer for 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection' threw an exception. "}
    with InnerException: {"The type initializer for 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnectionFactory' threw an exception."}
    and it has InnerException: {"Requested registry access is not allowed. "}

    I think I found it... this is sure a strange error for what is really happening.
    Apparently it had happened to me before, and fortuantely, I actually added the following comment:
                // Above is related to the WCFLOG SQL Diagnostics Trace
                // If you get error here an inner exception "requested registry access is not allowed"
                // inside exception "type initializer for System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection"
                // then make sure you have impersonation enabled in your client.
                // See AdminConsole web.config or FRB.EC.AdminService.ConsoleTester.app.config for examples
    Now I think I will do a try catch and spit out the same text.
    Still testing to assure that this really was the issue.
          <endpointBehaviors>
            <behavior name="FRB.AllowImpersonate ">

    The line below in BOLD below is what somehow seemed to disappear from my app.config - probably due to a TFS human error - still checking that also:

  • SSRS Database Configuration Manager Error - Could not connect to server: The type initializer for 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection' threw an exception

    I'm Getting the "Could not connect to server: The type initializer for 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection' threw an exception" Error on an existing Instance of SSRS that had been working previously (lots of installs/patches since).
    Any time I try to hit the "Test Connection" button on existing connections or create new ones from the SSRS Config Mgr., it throws that error.
    I know the SQL Server connectivity works (I have SSMS installed on there and can cut and paste server Login to connect). The problem is I can't really get any more details on the error...Event Viewer isn't logging anything, I have upped the trace level
    to 4 in the reportingservicesservice.config file, I have even watched it with procmon and nothing obvious pops up.
    Let me know if anyone else has been down this path and what they have tried.

    Hi BillOlive,
    Based on my research, the issue may be related to user access permission. You can refer to the following method to troubleshooting the issue:
    Open C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG folder | right click on the machine.config file | Properties | Security | make sure your domain account has FULL CONTROL permission on this file.
    If above steps still do not work, please backup your machine.config file to somewhere else and replace with the attached one from my Windows Server 2008 environment.
    Alternatively, app.config file also may cause the same issue. There is a similar issue, you can refer to it.

    Hope this helps.

  • How to call VC++ dll whiich return char[] data type value in powerbuilder

    Hi Everyone,
    I am using PowerBuilder 11.1 build 8123.
    I am calling VC++ DLL in our PowerBuilder application which return char[] data type value.
    I just declare Global External Function:-
         Function  char getOSSectionName() library "DocServClient.dll" alias for "getOSSectionName;Ansi"
    And then call this function in window as:-
         Char      ls_section[1] = 'DOCAPPLICATIONS9X'
         ls_section[1]=getOSSectionName()
    When I check ls_section[1] value in messagebox it display a symbol (please check attached attached image.)
    VC++ function and return variable declaration:-
         __declspec(dllexport) char *  __stdcall getOSSectionName()
           char    SectionName[_MAX_PATH];
    Please let me know that my code is valid or not.
    Please help..

    Hi,
    Thanks to Everyone for your suggestions.
    I am solved my problem to change VC++ function as :-
         Int __declspec(dllexport)  __stdcall getOSSectionName(char* SectionName)
                        instead of
         __declspec(dllexport) char *  __stdcall getOSSectionName()
    and declare global function as:-
           Function int getOSSectionName(Ref char ls_section[100]) library "DocServClient.dll" alias for "getOSSectionName;Ansi"
    and call function in window as:-
         int li_ret
         char ls_section[100]
         string ls_sec
         li_ret=getOSSectionName(REF ls_section)
         ls_sec=ls_section
    Thanks,

  • Does CHAR data type work with Forms 11g

    We have an application in Forms 11g (32bit - version 11.1.2.0.0). DB is a Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production.
    When our Forms calls a stored procedure which has parameters defined using column name type (i.e. like p_customer_code customers.code%TYPE ) and if the column data type is CHAR we get a run time error when executing the package (ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error string).
    When we change the data type of the tables column to varchar2, it works??
    Problem is we have dozens of tables with CHAR data type columns and we can't do all the changes manually. For one thing, if they are part of a primary or unique key or even foreign key, we can't change the data type of the column without dropping the constraint.
    What is the solution to this pls??

    When our Forms calls a stored procedure which has parameters defined using column name type (i.e. like p_customer_code customers.code%TYPE ) and if the column data type is CHAR we get a run time error when executing the package (ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error string).this might also be related to compile settings, check your NLS settings (NLS_LANG, NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS) both times when you compile forms AND your stored procedures.
    As for the CHAR datatype: CHAR internally is treated like a blank padded varchar:
    http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:1542606219593
    Speaking of that it might be time to use varchar2 instead your char columns. You'd have to drop and recreate your constraints, but with the help of the data dictionary (+user_tables+, user_tab_cols, user_cons_columns, user_constraints) and dbms_metadata this shouldn't be that hard.
    Also you'd of course need to recompile all your forms after you are finished, but I guess you are aware of that ;)
    cheers

  • Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle: Data type is not supported.

    I got the error:
    Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle: Data type is not supported.
    Shortly after upgrading from Oracle 8 to Oracle 9. I was advised to download more up to date oracle drivers, but I was wondering if there was a way to tell what version of the 'OLE DB Provider for Oracle' is already at. Is there a command I can use via SQL Plus or something?

    I have found Microsoft ODBC for Oracle to be more stable than the Microsoft OLEDB for Oracle driver. I have also found both Microsoft ODBC and OLEDB drivers to be more stable than the drivers from Oracle.
    You could always get the latest MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) from Microsoft's MSDN Download site and then get the ODAC (Oracle Data Access Components) from Oracle's OTN Download site. ODAC requires MDAC. And ODAC has the latest drivers.
    I suppose it would help to have the latest patches for your Oracle client software too. Maybe Oracle MetaLink would have these?
    It may even help to have the latest service pack for Visual Studio 6 (Visual C++ 6 and Visual Basic 6) too.

    Some months ago Geany started to output an error whith every attempt to open a file mounted in smbfs/cifs.
    The error was:
    Value too large for defined data type
    Now the error is solved thanks to a french user, Pierre, on Ubuntu's Launchpad:

    The solution is to add this options to your smbfs/cifs mount options (in /etc/fstab for example):

    It works on Arch Linux up-to-date (2009-12-02)

    Hi,
      Can someone explain what is workarround or any help for below problem
    when call transformation is called for usr02 records, after xml string is generated is showing different data for RAW data type for example content of fields BCODE,PASSCODE etc get convert into different data
    for example: content of BCODE fields before xml transformation say -7F8087472FB996E5
    after xml transformation it display as f4CHRy+5luU=
    why is this so happening?  is this known behaviour after xml transformation or it is bug in xml transformation?
