Inserting docs and xls as blobs

can i store entire documents and excel worksheets in a BLOB field, when retrieving and inserting new docs is the performance of my database come down if yes could u suggest which is best method to do?

Yes, you can store documents in BLOB or BFILE field.
For BFILE field data store in filesystem,
and in table you have only reference to the file.
You can also use InterMedia's ORDDOC type.
If you store data in database then for improving performance you may use separate tablespace for LOB data.

  • Opening .doc and .xls files

    AW 6.2.9
Have been able to open most .doc and .xls attachments up till now.
Had trouble and now can't (.doc files will open in textEdit). Reloaded AW but all that happens is that when I click on the open button the list of files disappears. I am not even told that it cannot open the file.
iMac4,1 Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My guess as to why you have been able to open these until recently is that the files you received were not saved with updated versions of Word & Excel. Until earlier this year I was able to open both PC & Mac versions with AppleWorks. PC versions were the first to not open but if I re-saved them with Office: Mac I could open them. Then, after a couple of Office: Mac updates, I can no longer open them. NeoOffice is a reasonable alternative.

  • Convert doc and xls to pdf UNIX

    Hi all!
    I have a problem.
I need a software that make a conversion of documents DOC and XLS to PDF, but specify for Unix (IBM AIX). I have a Dms server(UNIX) with douments doc an xls, and i want lead the document to the portal in PDF format.
    Thank you

Thanks anyways, I feel POI is not the solution for my problem. If your requirement is that your PDF should look exactly like what happens when you load a document into Excel and then have Excel output it to a printer, then you are correct. Unfortunately nothing else is the solution for your problem, either, except trying to not have that requirement any more.
Unless you can cobble something together where you actually run Excel and persuade it to output using a PDF printer driver like the one the previous poster described, or like PDFCreator which I use to make things into a PDF. But you're much more likely to get all those bits working together with something that can manipulate Windows internal things better than Java can.

  • Insert doc/pdf/jpg into BLOB using forms (web based)

    Hi All,
we have 81741 db on window2000(data server), forms6.0.8.20.1 on windows2000(webserver)
& users using IE6/netscape as setup. User wants to store a pdf/doc/jpg file (stored on his PC)
    into database.
He wants ability to view this pdf/doc/jpg later & have ability to download again to his pc. Please note
that we have web based setup & not using HTTP server (using WebDB listener).
I am planning to use BLOB to store the table in database, but cannot figure out what/how to force forms
    to do this.
If someone has done this before, could you please update this thread on how to proceed.
Thanks a lot for your input...
    Abhi.

AS far as inserting images you can use the image item in Oracle Forms and base it on a blob column in the database.
Regarding the other types of data you can upload them to the database using a Java function on the application server (use the java importer from Forms to call the Java class). You can use another Java function to retrieve the info from the database to the application server, and then use web.show_document to get the file from the application server to the client.
Or you can wait a few weeks for the Webutil utility that will have this functunality built into it.

  • Hyperlinks to XLS, DOC, and PDF files that are included in a .chm file work intermittently.

    SUMMARY
Hyperlinks to XLS, DOC, and PDF files that are included in a
.chm file (and the Baggage Files) only work intermittently. The
only solution appears to be deleting the Temporary Internet Files.
    PROBLEM
    1. I place the XLS, DOC, or PDF file in the Windows
sub-directory that corresponds to the RoboHelp project sub-folder
where the topic in which I’ll place the hyperlink exists.
    2. I open the help project in RoboHelp HTML.
    3. I right-click on the project’s Baggage Files
sub-folder that corresponds to the Windows sub-directory in which I
placed the XLS, DOC, or PDF file (in step 1).
    4. I import the XLS, DOC, or PDF file.
    5. I open the topic in which I’m going to place the
    hyperlink in the WYSIWYG editor.
    6. I “drag and drop” the Baggage File into the
topic (in the WYSIWYG editor) to create a link to it.
    7. I save the changes and then generate HTML (.chm) help.
    8. I open the .chm file and click the hyperlink. The XLS,
DOC, or PDF file may or may not open.
    9. When the hyperlink works correctly, for DOC and XLS files,
a “File Download – Security Warning” dialog box
appears asking, “Do you want to open or save this
file?”. The buttons that are available are
    “Open”, “Save”, and “Cancel”.
These buttons work then as one would expect. (When the hyperlink
works correctly for a PDF file, it simply opens the PDF file in a
new window; there’s no prompt to save, open, or cancel.)
    10. When a hyperlink does NOT work, for DOC, XLS, and PDF
files, no dialog box or other visual message is displayed. Instead,
the sound that is associated with the “Exclamation”
program event is played (the “Windows XP
Exclamation.wav” file is the WinXP default).
    Other Notes:
    - The hyperlinks ALWAYS work when I view a topic using the
“View Selected Item” function (Ctrl+W) in the RoboHelp
    HTML project.
    - Once a hyperlink stops working, it will not start working
again until I delete all the Temporary Internet Files.
    - A hyperlink will stop working even if Internet Explorer
(iexplore.exe) is closed the entire time.
    WORKAROUND
Through trial and error, I have discovered that if a
hyperlink stops working, I can get it to work again using the
    following steps:
    1. Leave the .chm file open.
    2. Open Internet Explorer.
    3. Click Tools>Internet Options….
    4. From the “Internet Options” dialog box, select
    the “General” tab.
    5. Under the “Temporary Internet Files” section,
    click the “Delete Files…” button.
    6. From the “Delete Files” dialog box, select
“Delete all offline content” and then click
“OK”. The files are deleted and the “Delete
    Files” dialog box closes.
    7. Click “OK” to close the “Internet
    Options” dialog box.
    8. Without closing Internet Explorer and without re-starting
the .chm file, all the hyperlinks that didn’t work before
    will now work.

    As” dialog box.
    - If I click “Cancel” from the “File

having been “Last Accessed” today is the
    “Shockwave Flash Object”.
    REQUEST FOR HELP
I really want to include certain PDF, DOC, and XLS files in
their native format in a .chm file. However, I need a better
solution to my problem than the one I discovered. What I really
want is to avoid the entire problem altogether.
Have anyone seen this before or have any suggestions?

You wont be able to do that. The embedded objects would appear as images only.

  • Google Docs and iPhone

What is the hold up with having Safari use Google Docs?
I am very interested in replacing my PDA with an iPhone, but cannot if the iPhone has no means of syncing with .doc and .xls files. My three year old Palm T3 allows this through Docs to Go. I refuse (and suspect others feel the same) to retrograde for $600!
I really don't care whose fault Safari and Google Docs compatibility rests with. I need Apple and Google to put their heads together and figure it out or many business users will have to consider other Smart Phone options.

    Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions. Any question pertaining to the iPhone beyond what Apple has publicly stated is speculation, since the product has yet to be released. I suggest you rephrase your statement into a question and post it in the iPhone Forum.
From that forum: iPhone is not available for order at this time. When the product begins shipping, this forum will be replaced by a support forum. Posts in this forum are expected to be of a constructive nature.
    Hope that helps.

But on my iPad now there are to application present Docemnt-2 (Free) and Document-2. I am not able to open any existing document using the upgraded version of application. How do I connect all the existing txt,PPT,XLS doccument to the new upgraded Document-2 application and then to edit it on my iPad.

As suggested I had deleted the free application and did a hard restart the iPad. I have again copied the document using iTunes. But I am not able to edit any document using this app. Document 2 (paid version) supports editing features of the txt/ xls /ppt files. Is there any problem while loading the Document 2 app. If I reload then do I need to purchase again?

  • Inserting and updating a BLOB field

Friends I want my application (Oracle is the backend) to look for a character in a BLOB field and then replace it with the desired character.

You may have one of a few errors going for you there:
The error says your column in Oracle is a Long not a CLOB, if it is, then make your column a CLOB.
CLOB's are not suppored in all environments and/or all interfaces (specifically Windoz ODBC has a problem).
I believe a DOC (Windoz MS-Word) file is a BLOB, due to formatting characters in the file.
I had a very similar error using Access and trying to do this, but changing to SAS fixed the problem. It could very well be that your version of ODBC/JDBC drivers does not support it properly.

  • Prepare statement to insert a row that contains Blob column. Which way is correct?

When we make prepare statement to insert a row that contains Blob column. Which way is correct? And what is the difference? Does anyone know?
         1.  Preparestatement.setBlob(parameter number, blob type object)
         2. Preparestatement.setBlob(parameter number, inputstream type object)
This link show the test I made.

         1.  Preparestatement.setBlob(parameter number, blob type object)
         2. Preparestatement.setBlob(parameter number, inputstream type object)
I answered that in your other thread and provided a link to the JDBC Dev Guide section that discusses how to work with LOBs and BFILEs.
Did you read that doc section?
Did you read my reply in your other thread?
In java a BLOB is just the locator that gives you access to the actual content. In your case you got access by selecting an existing BLOB locator and getting its inputstream. That inputstream is what gives you access to the actual blob content.
The locator is just that; it specifies the LOCATION of the blob content but it is NOT the content.

  • How to create and write a BLOB using ImmediateAccess

    Hi there,
I'd like to write a BLOB using ScrollableRowSetAccess an ImmediateAccess and thereby want to avoid the use of any SQL-statements.
The problem is that I can't write to an empty BLOB, so that I have to create a dummy-Blob using BLOBDomain and overwrite it afterwards (see code below).
It should be possible to avoid the creation of a dummy-BLOB but I don't know how. Could you please send me a corrected version of my code?
    Thanks in advance

Here are the issues with your usage of BlobDomain:
    1. Streaming support is not implemented in 3.2 version of BlobDomain. It'll be implemented in our next release.
    2. Your casting of object returned from getColumnItem is illegal as the objects will be of type BlobDomain and not BLOB.
    3. When you create an empty BlobDomain you're in-effect meaning to call the empty_blob() method on the sql-row to create a empty blob locator.
    4. You need to use getBytes(), setBytes() to read data out/set data into a blob/clob domain object in JDev 3.2
    5. Casting/using oracle.sql.BLOB may lead to non-portable code (you're binding to the jdbc objects which may not be available in all tiers of deployment).
Here's the pseudocode you could use for new blobs.
    1. create a new instance of BlobDomain()
    2. setBytes() with actual data read from a stream. (Yes this may not work with real large blobs but we've tested blobs ~2MB in size and for larger needs, we're implementing the streaming support scheduled for our next release).
    3. set the domain object into an attribute.
    4. post/commit your data.

  • How to backup docs and pics using a USB drive?

I'm a fairly new Mac user and I'm panicking a little right now. I bought a USB to backup my pictures, documents, etc. (I also backup using Time Machine and an external drive, but wanted some extra protection). I just inserted the USB drive for the first time, it showed up on my desktop as "Untitled" (so far, so good), then I dragged my Documents folder from the Dock to the USB icon and the Documents folder from the Dock is gone. (Yikes!) When I opened the USB icon, there was nothing in it. I looked in Finder and my Documents are still in this Mac (somewhere), but how do I get the folder of them back onto the Dock? And before I go any further, what is the (proper) procedure for backing up my docs and pics (from iPhoto) to this USB drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not gonna touch a thing until I hear from someone with more Mac knowledge than this Mac newbie.
    Sunny

Select the drive in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and if it's format doesn't contain Mac OS Extended, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase it.
Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and drag the items inside you want to back up onto the external drive and drag the Documents folder to the Dock.

    Dear All,
I have a requirement to create a table allowing the user to add rows in it and update a row as well as delete a row from that table. To do this I guess I have to make use of ALV.But using ALV I am not able to enter data to a table where as I can make a column editable delete a row etc. please guide me to perform these operations(insert, update and delete) on table.

    Hi Sridhar,
By using ALV you can do all insert delete etc things. if you want to edit i mean you can yenter data in ALV.

  • Insert, update and delete on updatable join views

Hi I need to insert, update and delete data in a views. I tried the foloing example
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14117_01/server.101/b10739/views.htm#i1006232
    We have two tables:
    CREATE TABLE dept (
    deptno NUMBER(4) PRIMARY KEY,
    dname VARCHAR2(14),
    loc VARCHAR2(13));
    CREATE TABLE emp (
    empno NUMBER(4) PRIMARY KEY,
    ename VARCHAR2(10),
    job VARCHAR2(9),
    mgr NUMBER(4),
    sal NUMBER(7,2),
    comm NUMBER(7,2),
    deptno NUMBER(2),
    FOREIGN KEY (DEPTNO) REFERENCES DEPT(DEPTNO));
    and one view:
    CREATE VIEW emp_dept AS
    SELECT emp.empno, emp.ename, emp.deptno, emp.sal, dept.dname, dept.loc
    FROM emp, dept
    WHERE emp.deptno = dept.deptno
    AND dept.loc IN ('DALLAS', 'NEW YORK', 'BOSTON');
    this update command works successfully
    UPDATE emp_dept
    SET sal = sal * 1.10
    WHERE deptno = 10;
but this one fails because it attempts to modify the base dept table, and the dept table is not key preserved in the emp_dept view.:
    UPDATE emp_dept
    SET loc = 'BOSTON'
    WHERE ename = 'SMITH';
I tried to create the view with "WITH CHECK OPTION" clause but whith no success :(
My question is: how can I do this with a simple across this view. I rather not use Instead Of Trigger because it take a lot of PL/SQL code :(
    thanks in advance
    Operator

    UPDATE emp_dept
    SET loc = 'BOSTON'
WHERE ename = 'SMITH';But that doesn't make sense. You cannot just LOC for SMITH, because LOC is not an attribute of EMP. If you change the LOC in the view then you must change it for all employees in DEPT 30 (or whatever).
The key preserved thing is merely about maintaining your data integrity.
I rather not use Instead Of Trigger because it take a lot of PL/SQL code :(The problem is, your business rule is not clear. Are you wanting to change the LOC for the DEPT record which is the DEPTNO to which SMITH belongs? Or are you wanting to change SMITH's DEPTNO to be the one for the BOSTON office?
