Inserting to BLOB from Forms 6i

I need to take one of the following file types from a client machine and insert it into a BLOB column on the database:
Word, Excel, PDF, MS Project, GIF or JPG
I am using oracle forms 6i, the database is Oracle 9.2.
To get the file into the form, I believe I need to have the blob column defined as an ole_container. To put the file into the container, I need something like this:
:blob_name := GET_FILE_NAME('c:\');
if :attchmnt_name is not null
     then
Initialize_Container('ATTCHMNT_FILE',:blob_name);
end if;
Am I missing something here?

Thanks for your response, Harish.
Unfortunately, I am still unable to connect to the database under Forms 6i or SQL*Plus 8.0 (under Oracle - OraHome81).
I have tried to modify the TNSnames.ora file as you suggested, but since there are several TNSnames.ora files under similar directory, I cannot be absolutely sure if I have modified the specific file that you intended me to. Below are the directories of the files that I tried to modify:
* Oracle\OraDev\NET80\ADMIN
* Oracle\OraAppSvr\NET80\ADMIN
* Oracle\oraenterprise\NET80\ADMIN
* Oracle\Ora81\NETWORK\ADMIN
Enclosed is also the modification that I added in the TNSnames.ora:
orcl.world =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS =
(COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
(PROTOCOL = TCP)
(Host = oracle.cba.uh.edu)
(Port = 1521)
(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
Moreover, I am also not sure about your last suggestion to add environmental variable in the registry of Forms. I would really appreciate it if you can elaborate on this.
Again, thanks very much for your help, Harish. I greatly appreciate it.

  • Not able insert ,query data from forms

    hi,
    I am not able to insert data or query data from forms(10g devsuite).getting error frm-40505,frm 40508 .i am able to insert and select record from sql plus.the block ihave created is control block .it is connected to the table using the properties.
    should i do anything to insert record.please help

    the block ihave created is control block .it is connected to the table using the properties.A Control Block, by definition, is a non-database block. This means the block is not directly connected to a table so you have to manually display data in the block and any DML you want to perform on data in this block you must do manually as well.
    There are four database objects you can base your database block on; 1) a Table, 2) a View, 3) From Clause Query (basically an In-line View), and 4) a database stored procedure. I recommend you use one of these four methods rather than manually display your data.

  • Loading a blob from forms ?

    I would like to know if anyone has loaded a file into the
    database in a blob field with forms not using OLE in client
    server mode.

    Well, sorry for the delayed response.
    You can load Word Documents also in forms. For this you have to
    use OLE interface.
    Just, create an OLE container for your database item (say,
    notes_text) and use the following code for loading the document
    to that item.
    FORMS_OLE.INITIALIZE_CONTAINER (:notes_text, '<file_name>');
    FORMS_OLE.CLOSE_SERVER (:notes_text);
    The above code will initialize the OLE container with specified
    document. After initializing the OLE container, just commit the
    record to save the document into database.
    Hope the above helps you.

  • PHP, INSERT FILNAME FIELD  FROM FORM

    I am trying to do a simple insert record into a MySQL
    database and for the life of me I cannot get the file field
    (<input name="photoNAME" type="file" id="photoNAME"
    />)
    to insert into the database. I have three other fields that
    do insert correctly the only one that won't go in is that field. I
    can't even get the form field to echo to the screen.
    Anyone have any idea why?
    Thanks

    As Gary indicates, using type="file" is for file uploads. If
    all you're
    trying to do is get the name of the file into a database,
    there's no
    need to upload the file. In fact, it's a total waste of
    resources.
    You need to use the PHP file system functions to build a list
    of the
    images in your folder, and use it to populate a drop-down
    menu of
    filenames. I show how to do it in both "Foundation PHP for
    Dreamweaver
    8" and "PHP Solutions", but it's not all that difficult to
    code yourself
    if you use scandir() (PHP 5 only).

  • How to insert special character from Oracle form builder 10g

    Dear all,
    I need help. how to insert special character like 'Superscript or Subscript ' from oracle form builder 10g. I had try in Oracle form builder 6i with press ALT+ASCII code in the text item and it work, but in the oracle form builder 10g this method doesn't work... would you like to help me...somebody please...
    Best Regard,
    Dedy P.T.

    What do you mean by insert ... from Forms Builder? Do you mean you want to add it as text in a string of pl/sql code or as part of boiler plate text (label) or a value on the Property Palette?
    For special characters you would need set NLS_LANG to something that would support the characters you want to use. For the Builder to see the change, you would need to set NLS_LANG to something like:
    NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8
    This can be done in the Windows Registry or system. As I mentioned, this will only apply to the Builder and will have nothing to do with a running form. For running forms you would need to set this in default.env. As for things like super and sub scripts, these are font formats and not necessarily characters. For the most part, I don't believe these are supported in Forms.

  • Insert doc/pdf/jpg into BLOB using forms (web based)

    Hi All,
    we have 81741 db on window2000(data server), forms6.0.8.20.1 on windows2000(webserver)
    & users using IE6/netscape as setup. User wants to store a pdf/doc/jpg file (stored on his PC)
    into database.
    He wants ability to view this pdf/doc/jpg later & have ability to download again to his pc. Please note
    that we have web based setup & not using HTTP server (using WebDB listener).
    I am planning to use BLOB to store the table in database, but cannot figure out what/how to force forms
    to do this.
    If someone has done this before, could you please update this thread on how to proceed.
    Thanks a lot for your input...
    Abhi.

    AS far as inserting images you can use the image item in Oracle Forms and base it on a blob column in the database.
    Regarding the other types of data you can upload them to the database using a Java function on the application server (use the java importer from Forms to call the Java class). You can use another Java function to retrieve the info from the database to the application server, and then use web.show_document to get the file from the application server to the client.
    Or you can wait a few weeks for the Webutil utility that will have this functunality built into it.

    Please anyone help me out, on how to get this concept started.

    Hello,
    I have a way to do this, but it would take some hand coding on your part. If you feel comfortable hand writing php code and doing manual database calls, specificaly database INSERT calls you should be fine.
    Create a custom form using the ADDT Custom Form Wizard that has all the rows and fields you need. This may take a bit if you are adding the ability for up to 20 rows, as per your diagram of the form area. The nice thing about using ADDT to create the form is that you can setup the form validation at the same time. Leave the last step in the Custom Form Wizard blank. You can add a custom database call here, but I would leave it blank.
    Next, under ADDT's Forms Server Behaviors, select Custom Trigger. At the Basic tab, you enter your custom php code that will be executed. Here you are going to want to put your code that will check if a value has been entered in the form and then do a database INSERT operation on the Stock_table with that row. The advanced tab lets you set the order of operations and the name of the Custom Trigger. By default, it is set to AFTER. This means that the Custom Trigger will get executed AFTER the form data is processed by the Custom Form Transaction.
    I usually just enter TEST into the "Basic" tab of the Custom Trigger. Then set my order of operations in the "Advanced" tab and close the Custom Trigger. Then I go to the code view for that page in Dreamweaver and find the Custom Trigger function and edit the code manually. It's much easier this way because the Custom Trigger wizard does not show you formatting on the code, and you don't have to keep opening the Wizard to edit and test your code.
    Your going to have to have the Custom Trigger fuction do a test on the submitted form data. If data is present, then INSERT into database. Here's a basic example of what you need to do:
    In your code view, the Custom Trigger will look something like this:
    function Trigger_Custom(&$tNG) {
    if($tNG->getColumnValue("Item_1")) {
    $item1 = $tNG->getColumnValue("Item_1");
    $textbox1_1 = $tNG->getColumnValue("Textbox_1");
    $textbox1_2 = $tNG->getColumnValue("Textbox_2");
    $textbox1_3 = $tNG->getColumnValue("Textbox_3");
    $date1 = $tNG->getColumnValue("Textbox_3");
    $queryAdd = "INSERT INTO Stock_table
    (item, Qty_In, Qty_Out, Balance, Date) VALUES($item1, $textbox1_1, $textbox1_2, $textbox1_3, $date1)"
    $result = mysql_query($queryAdd) or die(mysql_error());
    This code checks to see if the form input field named Item_1 is set. If so, then get the rest of the values for the first item and insert them into the database. You would need to do this for each row in your form. So the if you let the customer add 20 rows, you would need to check 20 times to see if the data is there or write the code so that it stops once it encounters an empty Item field. To exit a Custom Trigger, you can return NULL; and it will jump out of the function. You can also throw custom error message out of triggers, but this post is already way to long to get into that.
    $tNG->getColumnValue("Item_1") is used to retrieve the value that was set by the form input field named Item_1. This field is named by the Custom Form Wizard when you create your form. You can see what all the input filed names are by looking in the code view for something like:
    // Add columns
    $customTransaction->addColumn("Item_1", "STRING_TYPE", "POST", "Item_1");
    There will be one for each field you created with the Custom Form Wizard.
    Unfortunately, I don't have an easy way to do what you need. Maybe there is a way, but since none of the experts have responded, I thought I would point you in a direction. You should read all you can about Custom Triggers in the ADDT documentation/help pdf to give you more detailed information about how Custom Triggers work.
    Hope this helps.

  • XML insert from forms

    Hi Guys,
    I have an xml file that I want to insert into a table using the database stored objects in Forms6i on Windows2000 server.
    I am using Oracle 8i DB with XSU package.
    My insert script is written in PL/SQL and saved as a stored procedure in the database.
    My script is running fine if I call it from SQL Plus. However, if I call it from forms (as a stored procedure with input parameters) the script runs well for the first time and if run again, the whole application freezes and I have to suppress it with CTRL-ALT-DEL. Even if I enter another time, I can't access the stored procedure or run my script again.
    The code I am using is the following:
    declare
    charString varchar2(80);
    finalStr varchar2(4000) := null;
    rowsp integer;
    v_FileHandle UTL_FILE.FILE_TYPE;
    begin
    -- the name of the table as specified in our DTD
    xmlgen.setRowsetTag('BILC_IMP_LC_MVTS');
    -- the name of the data set as specified in our DTD
    xmlgen.setRowTag('mappings');
    -- for getting the output on the screen
    dbms_output.enable(1000000);
    -- open the XML document in read only mode
    v_FileHandle := utl_file.fopen('E:\oracle\ora81\bin','okay.xml', 'r');
    loop
    BEGIN
         utl_file.get_line(v_FileHandle, charString);
    exception
         when no_data_found then
         utl_file.fclose(v_FileHandle);
         exit;
    END;
    dbms_output.put_line(charString);
    if finalStr is not null then
         finalStr := finalStr || charString;
    else
         finalStr := charString;
    end if;
    end loop;
    -- for inserting the XML data into the table
    rowsp := xmlgen.insertXML('BILC_IMP_LC_MVTS',finalStr);
    dbms_output.put_line('INSERT DONE '||TO_CHAR(rowsp));
    xmlgen.resetOptions;
    end;

    Lets take for example you are having the response in following format
    response := '<Response>
    <r><name></name><r>
    <r><name></name><r>
    </Response>'
    Convert it to XMLTYPE using the following
    xml_type := XMLTYPE(response);
    select extractvalue(xml_type,'/Response/r[1]/name') into result from dual;
    '1' in [1] refers to the index of the similiar node.(r node)

    I am not seeing where you actually get the image from the db to Excel ...... all what you are doing is passing a file name, but did you already download the file to client machine? if so, consider giving full path instead of file name only !

  • Insert an image from a Database

    Hi - I am trying to insert an image from a database into a webpage.  Basically when clients register on the site they upload their logo which i want to come up when they look at their account details and when they post a job.  When I test the file upload the file name is in an "image" field in my database and the image is in the website files on the server but I am having problems trying to get the logo to shop up on the webpage.  I have one table called Recruiters where all the client's contact details (and logo upload goes) and a table called jobs where all the job details go when they post a job (this does not hold the logo upload).
    At the moment i am trying to insert the image into the Recruiter account Details page where all the clients contact details are and all this information comes from the Recruiter table (including the image) but the image does not appear.  the query in my recordset is:-

    Hi
    You were right – I had to insert full path and it has worked so thanks.
    Would you be able to help me out with inserting the logo into a job post page and  the recordset I will need to insert the logo?
    Basically I want to add the logo that is uploaded when a client registers on the site onto a job info page.  To access the the details about a job, jobseekers just click on the job that interests them which takes them to the job details page which pulls all the information from the "Job" table in the database.  However, the logo is stored in the "image" field in the "Recruiter" table in the database.   I have tried setting up a recordset as:-
    SELECT Image
    FROM recruiters
    WHERE RecruiterID = colname
    (colname = $_GET['RecruiterID'])
    <?php require_once('../Connections/laura.php'); ?>
    <?php
    //initialize the session
    if (!isset($_SESSION)) {
      session_start();
    // ** Logout the current user. **
    $logoutAction = $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']."?doLogout=true";
    if ((isset($_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'])) && ($_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'] != "")){
      $logoutAction .="&". htmlentities($_SERVER['QUERY_STRING']);
    if ((isset($_GET['doLogout'])) &&($_GET['doLogout']=="true")){
      //to fully log out a visitor we need to clear the session varialbles
      $_SESSION['MM_Username'] = NULL;
      $_SESSION['MM_UserGroup'] = NULL;
      $_SESSION['PrevUrl'] = NULL;
      unset($_SESSION['MM_Username']);
      unset($_SESSION['MM_UserGroup']);
      unset($_SESSION['PrevUrl']);
      $logoutGoTo = "../index.php";
      if ($logoutGoTo) {
        header("Location: $logoutGoTo");
        exit;
    ?>
    <?php
    if (!isset($_SESSION)) {
      session_start();
    $MM_authorizedUsers = "Recruiter";
    $MM_donotCheckaccess = "false";
    // *** Restrict Access To Page: Grant or deny access to this page

  • Display BLOB from remote database

    Context: We are offloading documents (pdf) from our OLTP database to a dedicated 'output database.' These documents must be displayed from the application on our OLTP database using a database link. Various posts show that querying a BLOB from a remote database can best be implemented using a query on the remote table and an insert on a local (temporary) table. So far, so good. The idea is to display this BLOB using wpg_docload.download_file.
    BUT:
    When trying to display the pdf from this global temporary table an error occurs:
    ORA-14453: attempt to use a LOB of a temporary table, whose data has already been purged
    When trying to display from a normal table and issuing a rollback after wpg_docload.download_file results in another error:
    ORA-22922: nonexistent LOB value
    When trying to display from a normal table and not removing the record in any way, its works fine. Only I now have a garbage collection issue, because the remote date remain in my local (preferably temporary) table.
    It seems to me that mod_plsql needs an active session to display my pdf.
    Does anyone have an explanation for this behaviour and maybe a solution for my problem?
    Environment:
    local: 10.2.0.4.0
    remote: 11.1.0.7.0
    pdf size: ca. 150kB
    code used:
    PROCEDURE show_doc (p_nta_id IN NUMBER
    ,p_sessie IN NUMBER
    IS
    t_lob BLOB;
    t_lob2 BLOB := empty_blob();
    t_mime VARCHAR2(100);
    BEGIN
    -- copy BLOB into local global temp table
    INSERT INTO mvs_tmp_notaprint_bestanden
    npv_nta_id
    , npv_npe_sessie
    , mime_type
    , bestand
    ) -- from remote table
    SELECT npd.npv_nta_id
    ,npd.npv_npe_sessie
    ,npd.mime_type
    ,npd.bestand
    FROM mvs_notaprint_bestanden@marc npd
    WHERE npd.npv_nta_id ; = p_nta_id
    AND npd.npv_npe_sessie = p_sessie
    -- show BLOB from local global temp table
    SELECT t.bestand
    , t.mime_type
    INTO t_lob
    , t_mime
    FROM mvs_tmp_notaprint_bestanden t
    WHERE t.npv_nta_id ; = p_nta_id
    AND t.npv_npe_sessie ; = p_sessie
    t_lob2 := t_lob; -- buffer BLOB
    owa_util.mime_header(t_mime , FALSE );
    owa_util.http_header_close;
    wpg_docload.download_file(t_lob2);
    END show_doc;

    Andrew,
    thank you, the 'preserve rows' did the trick.
    Every query from a browser (even in the same browser session) is a new Oracle session, so the copied records in the global temporary table are gone after the page is displayed.
    Am I correct in assuming that each call from the browser results in a new Oracle session? I did a few tests and found for each call a different sessionid.
    Sincerly,

  • Accessing Java Classes from Forms

    Is is possible to access a Java class from Forms? I have been
    creating an Active X control that returns a Java object, and from
    that I can call methods on that object, but I would really like
    to do that without having and Active X control in the mix. Any
    suggestions?

    I'd be interested in this ORA_FFI doc you've been playing with.
    Would you please email it to me or post it.

  • How to move BLOBs from one table to another ??

    Hi All,
    I am trying to move blobs from one table to another, however my insert statement is not working. What i mean is its running, but records are not being inserted into the table.
    This is my first time moving blobs, so please bear with me.
    here is my insert statement:
    INSERT INTO CASES.FILESTORAGE
    SELECT      DID,
              DRENDITIONID,
              DLASTMODIFIED,
              DFILESIZE,
              DISDELETED,
              BFILEDATA       // this attribute is the BLOB
    FROM      USSC_CASES_TMP.FILESTORAGE
    WHERE      DID NOT IN (SELECT DID FROM CASES.FILESTORAGE);here is the DDL for the table.
    CREATE TABLE "USSC_CASES_TMP"."FILESTORAGE"
        "DID"          NUMBER(*,0) NOT NULL ,
        "DRENDITIONID" VARCHAR2(30 CHAR) NOT NULL ,
        "DLASTMODIFIED" TIMESTAMP (6),
        "DFILESIZE"  NUMBER(*,0),
        "DISDELETED" VARCHAR2(1 CHAR),
        "BFILEDATA" BLOB,
        CONSTRAINT "PK_FILESTORAGE" PRIMARY KEY ("DID", "DRENDITIONID")
      );CASES.FILESTORAGE table has the same DDL, but in a different schema.
    Thanks in advance.

    If this seems rather straight forward. If the schema are exact simply execute:
    inset into [destination] select * from [source] ;if something is amiss you should be throwing errors someplace* but try this:
    create table [scratch table name] as select * from [source table] where [place some limit here] ;If this does not work then something someplace is very wrong and if you are not the DBA you need to get this persons attention, fairly quickly. I would do the above from sqlplus and then after each statement would:
    commit;then check to see if it succeeded.

  • Read/Write pdf's as blobs using forms 10g

    Hi All,
    I have a table called IMAGES in which i store the pdfs as blobs.
    It was successfully working fine with me when I was using forms 6i.
    Recently I installed oracle 10g and just found that 10G doesnt support OLE.
    I came to know about WEBUTIL package and I have already included in the form.
    Could you please help me out how can utilize this WEBUTIL package to read/write blobs from database.
    If you have already developed any code like that, could please forward me?

    The WebUtil_file_transfer.client_to_db and db_to_client will give you direct access to read and write to the blob - I think the Demo form on
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/htdocs/webutil/webutil.htm
    has an example of this
