Install bug?

Just to preface ... it's kind of difficult to describe this as a Forte
bug, but after the install, it was noticed that the system's global path
was modified. Specifically
"c:\forte\install\bin;c:\forte\objectivity\bin" was appended. One would
think that would be fine, but what was observed, is that when launching
a command shell (cmd.exe), system variables used to set the path were
not being expanded. Again, specifically, the
"%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;" was not being expanded to
"c:\winnt\system32;c:\winnt;". As you can guess, there were a few
programs that weren't being found. Now one peculiar oberservation
however ... using "Run ..." under the Start menu did seem to be able to
interpret the path correctly. It was only a probem when you launched a
instance of "cmd.exe". (Makes me wonder if there isn't a problem with
the command shell.) Anyway, the fix seems to be pretty simple. It
appears that the path variable needs to be terminated with a trailing
";". After adding that things seemed to be expanding properly.

Greg,
what you just found is Forte Bug 31605. (I wonder when they are goinig
to actually fix it.) The Workaround is quite easy. Just go into Control
Panel - System - Environment. You don't have to change anything. Just
click into PATH definition and save it again. The next time you open a
cmd.exe it will again resolve PATH correctly.

  • IPod and iTunes install bug

This is the text of an email I just sent to Apple Tech Support. Has anyone else experienced this?
There is a problem with the Windows XP install package for the iPod software. I had the 2nd gen iPod (10 Gig Click-Wheel), and now have the 5th gen iPod with video (I love it!). The software install has a problem that has shown up in every single install I have done, and occurs on every computer I have used. There are several string variables that are called from the install module that are missing from the string table. I am amazed that this requires an email from a customer, since it is an incredibly obvious bug and equally simple to fix! ****, if I knew what software development package was used to design the install, I'd fix it myself! Whenever I install the iPod software I have to close at least half a dozen error boxes that notify me that a string variable is not found in the string table. Its not a fatal error, but it does pause the install until I click 'OK'. Some of the missing variable names are: ID_STRING11, APPLECUSTOMSTRING2, and APPLECUSTOMSTRING3. These are some of the shortcut titles from my program menu. (The last one is the name of the help file after installation!) Any basic testing done on the install package would identify this bug, but it has never been fixed! I am a software developer myself. If I ever turned in a project with a bug this obvious my boss would be reading resumes to pick my replacement. Especially if it remained in later versions! Its incredibly unprofessional. Hopefully, now that I have taken the time to point this out, it will be fixed. All any of your programmers need to do is:
    1) Run the install package on a clean Windows pc. (ie a pc not used for programming) It needs to be a clean pc so that all files needed for install come from the install package. (If the files are there already, it won't be a valid test.)
    2) Each time the error message appears, write down the name of the variable it cannot find.
    3) Open the file that contains the string table so that it can be edited.
    4) Create and initialize new string variables using the names that you wrote down, then assign values to the new variables.
    5) Save and close the open file, then recompile the installation package.
    6) Finally, include the fix in the next software update.
If any programmers disagree with this, PLEASE let me know.... This is such an obvious error, and appears to me to have a simple fix, that I'm tempted to send in my resume. I'd love a cushy programming job where the boss never checks my work! I know Apple has no love for Bill Gates and Microsoft, but this is ridiculous!

Never seen (or heard of) these errors before.
if I knew what software development package was
    used to design the install
    Files &
    Software Installation
OK... That's just strange. I've helped 3 friends and 2 family members install the iPod Updater and iTunes to their PCs and I've hit this problem each time. Nobody has ever asked about this before? If the errors were confined to my PC it would make sense, but I got the same errors on the other 5 computers... The developer articles imply that the string tables are compiled with the install package, so it wouldn't be caused by missing files. Unfortunately neither package is open source, so I can't look at the source code. The software is also written in the Mac environment, and I write software for the Microsoft environment, so I'm doubly blocked. Since none of the errors interfere with installation, and have no impact at all with the programs they install, I guess I'll just quit whining about it. Thanks for answering a somewhat bitchy post.

No gcc bug; it's a bug in your program.  From what I can tell, the char array `C' is designed to hold a string like "01:15:48" which is 8 characters.  Hence, it needs to be declared as `char C[9]' to have room for the terminating \0.  `char C[8]' causes sscanf to smash your stack, as it writes the \0 byte somewhere else.  Making that change fixed the program on my computer.  Too bad valgrind can't detect that sort of error.

  • Searching PDF's with Sharepoint and Adobe's iFilter (Reader 9 install bug?)

    Hi,
The suggested way to get the latest iFilter for PDF's is to install the latest Adobe Reader version 9. However I think that there is a bug in the install process -anyone agree?
The Adobe web site says that the iFilter that comes with Reader version 6,7,8 was the same and that the new iFilter that comes with 9 is an improved version.
My hunch is that the installer for v9 places in the new iFilter, but incorrectly points the file extensions in the registry to the old v6 program, that on a fresh install don't exist.
ie in Regedit - the Gather in Microsoft shared tools should point to
E8978DA6-047F-4E3D-9C78-CDBE46041603, but instead is set up to point to
    4C904448-74A9-11D0-AF6E-00C04FD8DC02. (which is iFilter v6)
There appears to be a lot of support on the web for the iFilter v9 not working and people falling back to the v6 one. The Adobe ITMatters blog saying "You may then need to do an additional step of registering that iFilter with SharePoint, but it's easy to do that is not quiet right, as it is not easy.
    Regards
    S

    Thanks for the document link.
I tried manually updating the DocIcon.xml file and adding OpenControl="AdobeAcrobat.OpenDocuments" stops the web client from being able to open pdf's.
I have checked IIS and the WebDAVModule is not present.
The one thing I have noticed is that the iFilter is version 9 is there a version 10 and would this be causing the problem?
    Thanks

  • Reader stops working when newest GTK2.0 installed - bug report and proposed fix

Adobe Reader 7.0.9 (Linux i386) stopped working when I installed a batch of updates on Xubuntu Feisty Fawn (7.04). The updates included GTK 2.0, version 2.10.11. The symptom was that upon startup, Reader ended up in a seemingly infinite loop, printing out "expr: syntax error" (when started from terminal emulator). A few debug "echo"'s revealed that the loop concerned function get_gtk_file_ver().
The bug itself is on line 418. The original line is as follows:
    echo $mfile| sed 's/libgtk-x11-\([0-9]*\).0.so.0.\([0-9]\)00.\([0-9]*\)\|\(.*\)/\1\2\3/g'
    - note that there is no '*' in the middle number-matching regexp, so the full expression matches only strings in which the "middle" group is 100, 200, ..., 900.
At this point in the execution, $mfile contains the name of the gtk library .so, in this case, libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.1000.11. In prior versions (e.g. 2.8.20, which is the current version in Ubuntu Dapper Drake LTS), the minor version had only one digit, and the regexp matched. When the minor version got incremented to two digits, the regexp no longer match because of the missing '*'! As an additional bonus, somehow this leads to the infinite loop (which is *not* good).
A working fix is to add the missing '*' into the regexp. I'd say that a lot of Linux users will be tripping on this issue soon, at least those who keep current on security updates.
I found no sensible way to contact the developers, i.e. a way that wouldn't have to pass a gazillion of customer-service and tech support people, who are most likely just as unaware of the issue as the users...
I hope this issue will be fixed ASAP - after all, it's only one added character, and that'll save a lot of users a lot of hassle.
(and btw, to have the intended effect, the dots in the sed expression should all be escaped with a backslash - now e.g. "libgtk-x11-2.0.sog0.1000.11" matches the sed regexp as well as "libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.1000.11", but this probably isn't too critical...)

The solutions provided here work, but by accident. The script compares 2104 (2.10.4) to 240 (2.4.0) and sees that it's greater. Adobe will have problems in future releases if the minimum GTK release is, say, 2.10.4 and the user has 2.4.0.
I've crafted a more elegant solution, shown here in "patch" format. I think the reformatting and tab elimination done by HTML will preclude you from pasting this into a file and running "patch", but it's pretty easy to read and is short...

  • Where to obtain hardcopies of install bugs/notes

I have spent more time trying to get copies of the Bugs/Notes (ex: <Note:97135.1>) that are referenced in the "User Friendly Install of Oracle8i on Redhat Linux 6.1" than installing/creating Oracle8i on Mandrake 6.0.... I already figured out all of the problems I encountered on my own, but it sure would be nice to get these references. Does anyone know where these mysterious documents reside? I have perused Oracle's Bug Database to no avail, Hell, for that matter I have gone in circles on Oracle's Technet site trying to find ANY of these documents listed in the "User Frie..." to no avail. Is there possibly a special archive site where these docs now reside?

  • Arch 0.7 ISO -- Grub Install Bug?

I only encountered two odd issues during the installation of Arch using the 0.7 final ISO. One of them was that when I attempted to install grub to the root partition, the installer only gave me a list of existing partitions up to dev/hda9 as possible options. Although there were several more (including the arch root and home partitions), the list would not scroll down past that hda9 partition.
I submitted to the will of the installer, and instead edited the lilo.conf file by changing the boot directory to boot=/dev/discs/disc0/part12, which is where I would have installed grub if given the option. But lilo installed fine of course using this method and all is well.
I would have preferred grub, but lilo is fine and I am familiar with using it as a bootloader so in the end it's no big deal. I just wondered if this might be a bug in the installer ... or ... horror, an operator error.

That was a bug in the installer.  Fixed for the next release.
    Thanks!

  • Quicktime Java install bug?

I've been trying to run this Java app that runs on pretty much every other Windows XP machine except mine; on my machine the app starts and then whines about something on the classpath: QTJava.zip. My machine happens to be the only that I've tried that has QT7 on it, in fact I've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled QT7. I read on a mailing list that:
"You can't just download QTJava.zip and put it into your classpath. You need to reinstall Quicktime to enable Quicktime for Java. If
you just put QTJava.zip you will still get errors about your classpath, even though it's correct - that's because QTJava needs a dll to be installed and some stuff in the registry."
It looks like the QT7 installer or uninstaller didn't do something correctly because my QT7 install seems to work fine although this is the first time I've ever had this bug and I've had QT on my machine for over a year. Has anybody else's classpath been infected by this bug?

I do have the same problem did you find something about it?

  • Express Install Bug - work around

I think the Express Install has a bug. If you have one .swf
on your page, and it is either outside of the user's view or the
flash dimensions are much larger than the user's resolution, the
express install prompt appears outside of the user's view. All the
user sees is a darknened screen.
My resolution during express install is to get the user's
resoluion using Javascript and scroll the window or move the flash
as necessary. This is a pain.
I just reported a Bug/feature request that will have the
install prompt appear in the center of the user's window, rather
than the center of the flash.
Any one got a better workaround to this problem?

I had to put the image onto every slide in power point, then
RE import it. You can put the image onto every slide in PPT easily
    - apparently this is just a bug, and there is now way around it.
    that is what I heard.

  • Oracle Express 6.3.4 on Win2K Install bug

Downloaded Oracle Express Server 6.3.4 build on Technet. It says its a Maintenance Release, but it needs some fixing itself. The release when 'Typical' installed on clean Win 2K with Oracle 9iR2 and OWB9i, skipping Oracle HTTP server configure, single Oracle_Home, installs successfully. But on rebooting the server, returns a scary entry point message in orb_r.dll, and Oracle Express Service fails to start. When you deinstall Oracle Express, it screws up PATH variable, throwing some apache.exe error, and Oracle HTTP server service not starting. Got the HTTP service going by modifying the oracle_apache.conf, and commenting the modose line. Reinstalling Oracle Express results in same orb_r.dll error. The orb_r.dll is probably some visibroker dll, and is 3.86MB in size, and dated 4/18/2001. Typical, as well as Complete Install, both result in same error.
And this is after I tried installing the OES 6.3.2. The 6.3.2 build when extracted into a new folder under C:, creates the Setup.exe program, but the program refused to run when double clicked. 6.3.2 never installed, and 6.3.4 doesnt work. Anyone...
    Thanks,
    Steve

this sentence makes no sense...would you explain?
(Are you not the person using the 'bleeding edge relative to the API that Oracle created/compiled against' Fedora distros?)The sentence means: Are you not the person who uses distros that provide API much newer than those expected by and tested by Oracle?
Oracle creates their product and tests extensively against a specific glibc version, as well as other very specific RPM versions. When trying to install Oracle products that vary too much from the version used and tested, difficulties are to be expected.
Some of the areas in which difficulties are consistently encountered by using much newer distros are in the installer, the java under the installer and dbca, and the java support under the enterprise manager.
In pure FOSS, the way to handle that issue is by recompiling. Not possible here, so the logical resolution is to stick close to the version expected.
It makes no sense to me that people would want to use Oracle but deliberately use an unknown (relative to Oracle requirements) environment. The resulting risk and aggravation are certainly not something normally acceptable in a business environment.

  • 10.2 Install Bug

    Hi
I've just downloaded the 10.2 for Windows. When I go to install I get the dos command window, which says it is preparing to launch Oracle Universal Installer but the window closes and nothing happens.
Has anyone come across this problem and if so how do fix it.
    Thanks

    Salu2.
Works, copy the "client" directory of instlation to root directory, or simple path, C:\client\ for example, and works fine!!!.
there are some problem if instlation is in, for example: "C:\Documents and settings\Administrator\Desktop\some progrmas here\oracle intalation 10.2g\client\", ¿too large?

  • ZCM SP2 Reporting Install Bug

According to the documentation Windows 2003 64bit is now supported for installing the Reporting Server. If you accept the defaults and install ZCM into c:\program Files (x86) then the reporting server will fail due to the parenthesis in the path. The actuall error is "ZCMDirHasBrackets." So this leaves me confused as I could not find this documented anywhere. Also the ZCM install will not let you install into c:\Program Files so the only option if you want to install reporting on Windows 64bit is to install ZCM into a custom path.
Has anyone else ran into this?
