Install "ON TO" USB troubles [SOLVED]

Hi guys,
New member here and first Arch experience.
I have fooled around with several Linux distros for the past year or so but I have decided that I am not happy with any of them. Most of them try to be as plug and play as possible, but I have found that the easiest ones to install are the most bloated and unreliable.
Using Arch would be an educational experience as much as building my own system that I can rely on. That being said, I am in learning mode so please be patient.
I want to install and build Arch onto a USB key. Most of the posts that I have found in this forum are in regards to having a USB installation key, or being able to install FROM a USB key.
My goal is to have a running OS ON my USB flash drive as I typically use this between two pc's. Plus its just cool. I currently have Fedora successfully running like this but its a little shaky.
So far I have Arch installed on my key, but when I try to boot, root is not recognized. I have followed the wiki to the letter, but still no joy.
In the wiki tutorial it was stated that on booting that root would most certainly not be recognized and to edit mkinitcpio.conf and add "USB" to the HOOKS line, Then rebuild, which I have done. Still no joy.
Does anybody here have a usb flash drive with Arch installed on it that can give a little insight on this?
FYI installation was done via LiveCD.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Firecat,
From what I have read this should be persistent as well, but if this doesn't work out I will indeed check larch out.
I have had some success in my problem.
I should have checked this out before posting but "usb" wasn't in the hooks line of mkinitcpio.conf like I thought. The kernel image wasn't built as I had thought. When I tried to do it again it would fail and complain that the "kernel26.img" file did not excist on the boot folder, but I verified that it did.
I did a reinstall and edited the line in the configuration portion of the installation. It now works fine.
I am still puzzled about the complaint of the kernel26.img not being recognized in the boot file.
Nevertheless it is working now.
For those who might be researching a USB install and come across this post, I advise doing the configuration prior to the install rather than after as per the wiki instructions. It makes for a more pleasant experience.
Thanks again.
I will mark the subject of this thread as [SOLVED]

    Hello mmarti,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please ensure you are following the Boot Camp installation guide, as you should be selecting the partition named "BOOTCAMP" when you are at the Windows installer screen.  See page 6 of the following PDF:

  • My 2009 iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up.  It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple log

My late 2009 27" iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up.  It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple logo again.  This could possibly be an HD failure, but then why does Safe Mode still work and the USB install not work?  Any ideas?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. • How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1

How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1 ?
My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
    - My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:
    Starting bootmgr.efi
    Error: Unsupported while loading bootmgr.efi
I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:
    rEFIt - Booting Legacy OS
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load option ´USB´
Error: Not found returned from legacy loader
    Error: Not found from LocateDevicePath
    (x 9 times)
Error: Load Error while (re)opening our installation volume
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting
(Hey Apple please send out a updated firmware that fix this issue?!)
So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ?  Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.
This is 5 page thread, so a little more 'meat' to it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3410900?start=60&tstart=0
And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a  mac-model device ID string that specifies yes.  An unnecessary hurdle.

  • Floppy drive install to portable USB HDD & Floppy to boot from

title pretty much says it all. I have a resonably old computer that cant boot off of usb. and i want to install it to a usb hdd. I dont have a cd drive so i will have to use the floppy network install (i did this before).  This is the only distro that I know of that has a floppy install. i have searched but the wiki search brings up like 500 results that are irrelevant. so in short this is what i need:
a floppy to be able to boot from a usb hdd
a guide that can show me how to install from a network install floppy setup to a usb hdd
if i remember correctly, the floppy network install is much much different than the cd install.

dont know if it will be able to install to usb but
    image can be found here
    ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux … ux/images/
    floppy install
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … py_Install
may be you can install arch to usb via a different pc move usb to desired machine boot floppy.img chroot run grub/lilo onto another floppy disk
please update us on your progress
    good luck

My airport show that the airport card doesn't install. How can I solve this symptom? It's usable 2 days ago.

Usually, if your Mac tells you "no AirPort card installed", it's because of power not properly being supplied to the AirPort card. Sometimes this symptom is related to hardware issues.
Reset the SMC of your computer. There are different ways of resetting, depending on the Mac you are using.

  • What packages to install, and how to install in an USB hard drive

    Hello.
Well, as I said in another thread, I want to install in an USB hard drive. But I don't know how, because it hasn't graphical installer, but text installer. I tried in a virtual machine, and it was fine, but when I want to start it, an error appears, "Was not found a bootable system" or something. Maybe a VM is not as a computer, but... well. I didn't change anything while I was installing GRUB, and I know that I've to install it in /dev/sdb.
And I want to know too, what packages to install and what packages don't (the ones which are neither "base" nor "base-devel"). But I'll install sudo, links and ndiswrapper (for wifi).
Thanks, and excuse me if my English is bad.

Gotta use the wiki my friend and this one is even translated into Spanish:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … C3%B1ol%29
As to your question about which packages you'll need beyond those in base and base-devel - that depends on what you want on your system... no one can answer that but you!
    Welcome to Arch.

  • Unable to install grub to usb hdd

Hello everybody. For 3 whole days I have been searching and trying to make this work but I am unable so, as my last resort, maybe someon here can give me a hand. I am trying to install arch to and old 30G ipod classic in order to use it as a portable USB bootable hard drive. I have followed all the instructions for a default installationa dn read the "Install Arch to USB" wiki. I have installed grub to the hdd with:
                         grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck --debug /dev/sdc
Where sdc is my ipod drive. Everything seems fine during the installation. ***I have also tried many alternatives of the above command (using --allow-floppy, --no-floppy, --root-directory) without success. All the installation is fine but I am unable to boot it. When I boot up, I select USB in my bios settings, to boot the usb and after a few seconds, I get a black screen with
    GRUB _
    and a blinking cursor.
I have also tried installing syslinux but it's the same result (except I do not get the "GRUB" message, just a black screen and a blinking cursor". I any one has done this before or has any idea on how to make this work it would be immensely appreciated.
    Thank you

    DSpider wrote:
iPod? Huh?? Then you should probably specify this in the title.
Maybe the BIOS isn't set to boot from your equivalent of "Removable Dev." first, "CD-ROM" second and "Internal Storage" third, after which you need to adjust the boot priority order.
Blank screen with blinking cursor means that you either installed to a partition instead of the whole drive (i.e. to "/dev/sdc1" instead of the MBR), or you didn't generate a grub.cfg.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … Guide#GRUB
And don't forget to add the "usb" hook:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … nvironment
Here you need to set the right hooks if the root is on a USB drive, if you use RAID, LVM, or if /usr is on a separate partition.
Edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf as needed and re-generate the initramfs image with:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
Another thing you should worry about, is that the drive is probably not that fast. It was designed for music and such (e.g. power saving by placing the files in cache, etc). It could drain the battery in mere minutes.
I have already done all the things you mentioned. My bios boots the usb device as asked, I am sure of that. Grub was installed on the MBR not the partition. I have a grub.cfg file (generated automatically). I also already added usb to me hooks along with encrypt and lvm2 for my encrypted partition and regenerated the kernel image with mkinitcpio.
I have good experience installing arch. I already installed my laptop arch with the same setup, a boot partition and a second partition, luks encrypted with two logical volumes, root and home and everything works perfectly.
I have quickly read somewhere (can't remember where), that some bioses, when specified to boot from usb, do not look at the usb device's mbr. Is that true?
PS: thanks for answering guys, it would really help me to resolve this problem. If i do, I want to install linux on other usb hard drives, not only the ipod.
Also, multumesc domnul "DSpider" pentru raspuns.

  • General Oracle Database Performance trouble solving best practice Steps

We use  Oracle 11g DB on Windows2008R2 as web application backend DB.
We have peformance trouble in that DB.
I would like to know General Oracle Database Performance trouble solving best practice Steps.
Is there any good general best practice document for performace trouble solving in the internet ?

@Girish Sharma:  I disagree with this. Many people say things like your phrase "..first identify the root cause and then move forward" but that is not the first step. Any such technique is nothing more than looking at some report, finding a number that you don't like, and attempting to "fix" it. Some people use that supposedly funny term "compulsive tuning disorder" (first used by Gaja Krishna Vaidyanatha) to describe this approach (also advocated in this topic by @Supriyo Dey). The first step must be to determine what the problem is. Until you know that, all those reports you mentioned (which, remember, require EE plus pack licences) are useless.
@teradata0802, your best practice starts by finding the problem. Is it, for example, that the overnight batch jobs don't finish until lunchtime? A screen takes 10 seconds to refresh, and your target is one second? A report takes half an hour, but you need to run it every five minutes? Determine what business function is causing your client to lose money because it is too slow. Then investigate what it is doing, how, and why. You have to begin by focussing on the problem, not by running database-wide reports..

  • Installed a new USB port, and cannot connect

    Hello Everyone.
I have a Dell computer which runs Windows XP. It's USB ports are 1.1. I installed a new USB 2.0 port (from IOGear), but I still cannot get the iPod to sync with iTunes. When I called IOGears tech support line, they said that iPods are not compatable with their USB ports. Is there any work around for this, or is there another USB port that is compatable with iPod. Any information will help.
    Thanks,
    Drew

    Hello Drew,
Don't worry, you can can still use your ipod with usb 1.1. What I do know that happens for sure is that you may have slow transfer speeds. Try this and also try connecting your ipod to a usb 1.1, does it charge?
