Unable to install grub to usb hdd

Hello everybody. For 3 whole days I have been searching and trying to make this work but I am unable so, as my last resort, maybe someon here can give me a hand. I am trying to install arch to and old 30G ipod classic in order to use it as a portable USB bootable hard drive. I have followed all the instructions for a default installationa dn read the "Install Arch to USB" wiki. I have installed grub to the hdd with:
                     grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck --debug /dev/sdc
Where sdc is my ipod drive. Everything seems fine during the installation. ***I have also tried many alternatives of the above command (using --allow-floppy, --no-floppy, --root-directory) without success. All the installation is fine but I am unable to boot it. When I boot up, I select USB in my bios settings, to boot the usb and after a few seconds, I get a black screen with
GRUB _
and a blinking cursor.
I have also tried installing syslinux but it's the same result (except I do not get the "GRUB" message, just a black screen and a blinking cursor". I any one has done this before or has any idea on how to make this work it would be immensely appreciated.
Thank you

iPod? Huh?? Then you should probably specify this in the title.
Maybe the BIOS isn't set to boot from your equivalent of "Removable Dev." first, "CD-ROM" second and "Internal Storage" third, after which you need to adjust the boot priority order.
Blank screen with blinking cursor means that you either installed to a partition instead of the whole drive (i.e. to "/dev/sdc1" instead of the MBR), or you didn't generate a grub.cfg.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … Guide#GRUB
And don't forget to add the "usb" hook:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … nvironment
Here you need to set the right hooks if the root is on a USB drive, if you use RAID, LVM, or if /usr is on a separate partition.
Edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf as needed and re-generate the initramfs image with:
# mkinitcpio -p linux
Another thing you should worry about, is that the drive is probably not that fast. It was designed for music and such (e.g. power saving by placing the files in cache, etc). It could drain the battery in mere minutes.
I have already done all the things you mentioned. My bios boots the usb device as asked, I am sure of that. Grub was installed on the MBR not the partition. I have a grub.cfg file (generated automatically). I also already added usb to me hooks along with encrypt and lvm2 for my encrypted partition and regenerated the kernel image with mkinitcpio.
I have good experience installing arch. I already installed my laptop arch with the same setup, a boot partition and a second partition, luks encrypted with two logical volumes, root and home and everything works perfectly.
I have quickly read somewhere (can't remember where), that some bioses, when specified to boot from usb, do not look at the usb device's mbr. Is that true?
PS: thanks for answering guys, it would really help me to resolve this problem. If i do, I want to install linux on other usb hard drives, not only the ipod.
Also, multumesc domnul "DSpider" pentru raspuns.

  • Floppy drive install to portable USB HDD & Floppy to boot from

title pretty much says it all. I have a resonably old computer that cant boot off of usb. and i want to install it to a usb hdd. I dont have a cd drive so i will have to use the floppy network install (i did this before).  This is the only distro that I know of that has a floppy install. i have searched but the wiki search brings up like 500 results that are irrelevant. so in short this is what i need:
a floppy to be able to boot from a usb hdd
a guide that can show me how to install from a network install floppy setup to a usb hdd
if i remember correctly, the floppy network install is much much different than the cd install.

dont know if it will be able to install to usb but
    image can be found here
    ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux … ux/images/
    floppy install
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … py_Install
may be you can install arch to usb via a different pc move usb to desired machine boot floppy.img chroot run grub/lilo onto another floppy disk
please update us on your progress

  • Install GRUB to usb thumb drive

    Hi,
I'm trying to install grub to a usb thumb drive for a portable arch install. I've read the wiki for grub and installing arch on a pendrive but i'm receiving the following error no matter what i do.
    sh-4.3# grub-install /dev/sdb
    Installing for i386-pc platform.
grub-install: warning: Attempting to install GRUB to a disk with multiple partition labels. This is not supported yet..
grub-install: warning: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
grub-install: error: will not proceed with blocklists.
    sh-4.3# grub-install /dev/sdb1
    Installing for i386-pc platform.
grub-install: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdb1. Check your device.map.
    sh-4.3#
Anyone know what this means and how i can install grub?
    Thanks.

Then verify that your installation is corresponding with the UUID rather than addressing by kernel name.
    What says
    $ ls -lF /dev/disk/by-partuuid

  • [SOLVED]Unable to install grub "couldn't find /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst"

Ok so I was trying to install windows after I had arch installed, used an ubuntu cd to use gparted to create a partition, tried to go to the windows installation but it would endlessly send me back to restart the installation even after succesfully writting all files...
So now I decided to not install it, went back into ubuntu/gparted, deleted the partition and rejoined the space with my main arch partition and then selected the "boot" flag to boot...
Cannot boot, grub its still on /boot/ but the MBR its obviously tempered with by windows ( which coincidentally couldn't even find itself after writing mbr to its liking....*sigh* ).
So I try to use my arch install cd to reinstall grub but i get this:
"couldn't find /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst is grub installed?"
I tried to use the select packages thing to make sure the cd is mounted and mounts fine but it keeps getting me that error message. I managed to boot to my system just fine with arch root=/dev/sda1 but obviosly the kernell does not has my nvidia module which means I can't get into x which means i am using links and since my grub is not loaded i can't even get framebuffer so this is rather inconvenient.
Im sure im missing a very simple and stupid thing but im so annoyed my brain must be saying "ok im done somebody else figure it out". I still have a backup copy of my grub menu.lst I made before. Do I just delete /bood/grub/ and try again? Am I missing something on the install procedure to be able to rewrite grub? Can I just do it from the command line or with pacman? Any help appreciate it thanks.

If you can get into your arch and cli then you should just be able to reinstall grub with
    install-grub /dev/sda
    or reinstall grub with
    pacman -S grub
if the package is messed up or missing.

  • Ultrabook Envy 6 1112TX unable to install sata disk with HDD mounting part 686594-001

    Hi,
I bought my Envy 6 1112TX,  it only has a small 128 msata SSD disk.   So I decided to install a new SSD to increase the storage.
After checking the user guide,  I purchased the disk mounting part  686594-001,  then I found that the cable is no where to connect to the laptop motherboard.  The interface doesn't match, so I cannot find any suitable socket to plug the cable from the disk mounting bracket.
There is a socket labelled as JHDD2 on motherboard, but it just cannot fit the cable,  and where JHDD1 is labelled, there is just no socket at all.
So please advise if the part number is wrong which indicated in the user guide,  or there is another socket which I missed, thanks a lot.

    Hi,
I think you need something like this.
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-Envy-SleekBook-6-1000-6-1006sa-HDD-SATA-Hard-Disk-Cable-DC02001-/171162...
The connector looks like an common white ZIF one. My Envy M6 has it. Is there a mSATA boot option in the BIOS? If not and you fit the hdd in it won't boot to the mSATA SSD.

  • [solved] unable to boot to the root partition on my new (usb) HDD

    hello,
i got a "unable to determine major/minor number of root device" error message when the system try to find the root partition (after it succefully boot on the boot partition).
Shuttle XPC SB65G2 (Mainboard FB65), usb HDD: Intenso INIC-1608L, Linux ctkarch 2.6.37-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT, grub legacy.
    sdb1: /boot (ext2), sdb2: swap, sdb3: / (ext4), sdb4: /home (ext4)
of course i have a kernel compiled with usb in HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf.
    i tried to install with sdb1: / (ext4), sdb2: swap, sdb3: /home (ext4)
but i got another error: it can't find the file /dev/blabla (root partition) (after it succefully boot on the partition!).
at last i found the solution: i have to comment "root (hdx,x)" in menu.lst for grub legacy!:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux
    # root (hd1,0)
    kernel ... by-uuid...
you don't need this line when you define by uuid, by label, or so...
it seems this line perturbs the behavior of the system.
    if this can help...

You do not need the "raw". If you do:
    ok devalias
it will show you how other aliases are formed
do ls -l /dev/dsk/c0t2d0s0 and you'll see the "non-raw" device path
    ok reset
will "lock" your alias in NVRAM but it will attempt to boot from boot-device (normally disk) the next time unless auto-boot? is set to false
    ok setenv auto-boot? false
My guess is that it could not understand "raw", reset, and booted from boot-device.
    You can:
    ok setenv auto-boot? false
    ok nvunalias altboot
    ok nvalias altboot /pci@1f,0/ide@d/dad@2,0
    ok reset
    ok boot altboot

  • Unable to install Itunes 10.1 or 10.1.1  -Apple Mobile Device USB Driver

Unable to install Itunes 10.1 or 10.1.1 and have it sucesfully install the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. It keeps coming up with an error that the driver is unsigned or disappears completely from device manager.
I have tried full uninstall including cleaning registry keys and file system. If I uninstall and re-install 9.2.1 usb driver works perfectly and I have no issues synching with phone or seeing the phone in Itunes.
I have tried repair installs, updating the drivers by pointing to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
I have tried removing all USB devices and having them reinstall from Windows after a reboot. Nothing seems to work.
I just got a new IPAD and cannot use it because I cannot install 10.1 at least to have it connect. It came with IOS 4.2.1 on it.

I also encountered the same problem.
and yes, I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes 10.1.1 bla bla blahhh....
Same issue!!! itunes cannot open cuz the mobile device support not started etc..
but when reinstalled prior itunes version 9.2 its gone
    and issue fixed.
    i can sync my 3G.
but not my 4G. it says you need to upgrade to 10.1 or above
spending the whole night to fix the problem which never occured b4
i finally find out one thing.
pl keep in mind im not a computer exprt
i tried this and it worked, i don know what fixed it, bt it works
try this at your own risk. some comp genius will tell us weather this way is right or not.
    ok. lets start...
in your desktop make a new folder. name it Kmh_\CoreFP
try uninstalling the newer version 10.1
only the itunes not other mobile div suprt, application suprt etc.
    dont mind the following order:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
    and reinstall itunes 9.2
    go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
you wil find a folder named "CoreFP"
copy it and paste to Kmh_\CoreFP
    uninstall itunes 9.2
    and reinstall itunes 10.1 again
    go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
you wil find folder named "CoreFP"
find the difference in properties comparing the one u stored in Kmh_\CoreFP
ok delete it and replace it with the one we stored stored in Kmh_\CoreFP
restart the computer and start itunes now
    what happens?
    best of luck.
    -Kmhm63
    reinstall the newer version 10.1
I would suggest that you revert back to prior working version until Apple comes out with an update that fixes what 10.1.1 broke.

    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out why my macbook keeps freezing when I try to drag my data across to it (even small files from a USB).
I've had to force restart over a dozen times today :/

    Hoz

Thanks - I had a 1TB hdd in my macbook for about 12 months but it started playing up a few days ago (I got the question mark folder on bootup) so I bought another 1TB hdd (same model) and started from scratch.
My macbook is an early 2010... now I'm wondering if Yosemite is a bit too much for it?
The ext hdd is my timemachine backup, so yes I have used it often and it has my TM backups - and the usb is a new usb which Ive used a few times.
The issue seems to be when Im transferring files from an ext drive to my mac. I can use it fine and browse (worked find for 45 mins) then I tried to bring my data across.. and it copied a few gig over before total freeze.
This has happened about a dozen times.
I keep running disk utility and checking the disk. I also just ran the apple diagnostics tool that came in the apps cd - the hardware apears to be fine.
I have a 250 gb partition for the OS and the rest is my second partition for data.
I'm now wondering if I should reformat the first partition, install leopard from the CD, then upgrade to mavericks and leave it at that.
Any thoughts would be awesome. Thank you for reading and replying!

  • Unable to install the USB internet modem?

I would like to use internet USB modem, when i plug in it is not reading and unable to install. but the same i can use very well in windows computer. Need help on installing the modem.

You will have to contact and discuss your issue with the technical support unit of your provider.  Bimmer 7 Seriers makes an excellent point.  I too had to revert to Lion from Mt. Lion due to technical problems with a USB modem.  In my case, the modem cannot run in a 64-Bit environment.  I suspect that is your problem.
I think that the solution lies with your provider or a different one.  There is nothing more I can do to assist you.
    Ciao.

  • Unable to instal VOX USB 2.0 drivers in WINDOWS XP Prof. SP2

    Hi,
I am unable to instal drivers in Windows XP Prof. SP2 for VOX USB 2.0. When I instal drivers from manufacturer's CD, instalation tells me, that it cannot instal some update for XP SP1. But I have SP2, so it should be OK. Then, after computer restart, I connected VOX and windows could not recognize it and asked me for drivers. I tried to instal drivers manually from the cd, but windows always tells me, that it cannot find driver on CD. I tried to download latest drivers from MSI website, but I had the same problem with it. What should I do? I am unable to use the TV tuner
Could anybody write me exact procedure how to instal it, please please!
    Thank You very much.
(I have tried to instal it on another computer with Windows XP Prof. SP2 and it did not work also. The same problem.)

Yes, my system has USB 2.0. It is P4 2.4GHz Northwood, motherboard: MSI 648 Max, 1GB of DDRAM (333MHz), MSI GeForce 4 MX 460, SoundBlaster Live! player 1024, pci card with aditional USB 2.0 ports (NEC chipset), SIS 900 pci NIC, 2x WesternDigital Caviar 1200JB, pci IDE controller SiliconImage 0680a (harddisks are not connected as RAID), DVD-ROM Pioneer, DVD burner LG GSA-4163B.
I have tried to connect VOX directly to USB port on motherboard and also to NEC USB pci card, but it did not work anyway.
I have disconnected all USB devices from the computer, except the mouse.
Windows is updated from MS Windowsupdate website.  I use Windows XP SP2 firewall and Microsoft Antispyware beta and antivirus software (I have tried to turn them off during the TV VOX installation, but it did not help).
And I  also use power supply for TV VOX.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled , ran ipod updater but it's still the same . When I plug in my nano itunes doesn't recognise it and I keep getting a message on my taskbar telling me that this device will run better in a USB 2.0 port but that's what I'm using !!?? . • Unable to load GRUB after install

I recently purchased an Acer Extensa 4620 and wanted to load Archlinux on it. For those of you unfamiliar with this particular brand, Acer has a bad habit of partitioning the hard drive into strange partitions. In the case of my 120gb hard drive I had two partitions of about 56gb each and a 5gb ghost partition. I cleaned up the larger two partitions and made them into a single 115gb partition. From here I partitioned this into my /, /home/, and swap for my install. After completing the install, and loading GRUB into /, I am given the error of no OS, which is the case since I no longer have XP installed. Im curious if whether or not I installed GRUB correctly. Should I have installed it in /, or made the /boot partition? Or does none of this matter because the 5gb ghost parition, which is for recovery tools, could be somehow interfering?
I thought i'd ask before I went ahead and deleted the partition. My next step before doing so is recreating the partitions and including a /boot and installed GRUB here.
I'd appreciate any help in this quandry.
By the way pardon the bad grammar. Sleeplessness is getting to me.

I think you may have grub in the wrong place, though I'm not sure exactly what you've done.
Grub consists of two parts, the loader itself, and the files.  The files just have to be somewhere the loader can read them, so /boot/ (does not have to be a separate partition) is the usual place.
The loader can be in one of two places, the root partition (which I think you may have done) or the MBR.  If it is in the MBR it will be used to boot the computer, if it is in the root partition, it expects a different bootloader (in the MBR) to boot the computer, then pass over to it.
Thus, you should be installing to the MBR, not the root partition.
Either way, it looks like grub is not installed in the MBR, so try:
    install-grub /dev/sda
Replace sda with the appropriate device if your hard drive is not sda.  Note sda not sda1.
You'll have to do so with a live CD of course, if you cannot boot.
You can get a bit more info on grub in the wiki

  • Unable to install GPIB USB hs controller on Windows 8

When I try to install the GPIB USB HS controller on my laptop, which has Windows 8 64 bit, the installation does not work. Every thin goes smooth until the progress windows then nothing happen even if I wait for ages. When I used the same CD on the desktop, which has W7 32 bit, I managed to install the driver. According to the datasheet the controller is compatible with W8 but not sure 32 or 64. Do you think this is the issue or there is something else going wrong?

Did you check your uac settings?
We found out that with default uac settings in win7 64 bit the install does not work.
In the line you can type in win7 (I'm not sure about 8) uac and press enter.
Then check the user access settings and make sure they are as low as possible
