giving up.
/usr/openwin/bin/xinit: connection refused (errno 146): unable to connect to X server

How can I get pass to it? I am using STB Volocity 128 display card.

The message "failed to initialize core devices" means that it did not detect a mouse. The X server will not start if there is no mouse connected. Try it again with a mouse, it should work.

    Hi all:

    Thanks a lots!

thats because you wrote "-install", which will be parsed as "-i nstall", hence your system will try to execute a kernel named "nstall".
The proper syntax is "boot net - install", with spaces on both sides of the -.

The chash failures indicate that either the repository you're using has corrupt content for those files, or the files are being corrupted on download. The latter is more likely, usually a result of badly-behaved http proxies.

  • Solaris 8 x86 Install Webstart Fails w/ 3C900-TPO

I'm using this forum in the hope that a Sun support person will read this and correct the problem in the install, since I don't see a place on the Sun website to report a problem without paying for it. I was able to work around this problem.
I was attempting to install Solaris 8 x86 (10/01) using the Interactive Installation on a home-built PC with a 3-Com 3C900-TPO ethernet card (one of the "supported" cards). Whenever I had the card installed the Solaris install went OK until after the automatic reboot (when it was time to insert CD #2), then Webstart would croak with an unexpected error (but no error message).
After removing the NIC card, I tried again from the beginning and the installation completed perfectly. I repeated this test twice with the same results.
The workaround was to go ahead and install CD #2 manually.
Hope this helps others out there...

Thanks for all of the helpful responses. I figured out the problem.

  • Failed to install solaris on new "Sun Fire V100"

    Hi All,
I'm new to solaris. I have a new server Sun Fire v100. Just after power on the server I got a following message on the console screen
*" No memory Detected! Cannot proceed further !!!"*
Actually I want to install solaris 10 update 4 on this server.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sachin

That system may be new for you, but Sun stopped selling them in March 2006.
Now, as for the "No memory Detected" message ?
There are four DIMM slots on the systemboard.
Make sure they actually have RAM installed to them.
The manuals for your "new" V100 can be found at:

  • Problems installing Solaris 8 2/04

I installed Solaris 8 2/04 in a Sun Fire V120 (UltraSPARC-IIe 648MHz), the installation finished but when server restarted it displayed this:

i tried with boot -b but it did not solve the problem, when i tried to start the server normally it could not, I can oly enter to server in maintenance mode, and the sysem could not found a lot of files (like /usr/sbin) and commands (like ls, boot, init).
I found at the start of the installation this display

i do not know if is a hard drive problem. Please help me because i tried three times the installation but the problem still exists

Since this is a fresh installation, you might consider starting it all over again.
You may have made some initial selections while prompted at the beginning of the install process, that accidentally omitted essential system files.
As for that device path and the disk? It's pointing to an external non-Sun peripheral that's connected to the rear external SCSI port. That drive has some bad sectors. ( I wouldn't trust a new OS on those sectors until you fixed them.)
The errors are not calling out either of the two possible internal drives.

  • Strange problems after installing Solaris 10 u6 on 64-bit PC

    Hi all,
I have run into some very strange issues after installing Solaris 10 update 6 on my 64-bit PC (it's almost new). The problems are with graphical applications and desktop environments based on GTK (so it seems, at least).
I have installed Solaris normally, following most of the default options and choosing the "Entire Group" software packages installation. However, after the first login I've seen that:
    1. No user creation process was offered to me and I had to login as root (I find it pretty strange)
    2. After logging in as root into JDK system, my screen went blank for a couple of seconds and then the system threw me back to the login screen.
    3. Logging into the old CDE environment was possible, but launching Firefox from there (using a command line terminal) wasn't. It gave me the following error message:
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: libmlib.so.2: open failed: no such file or directory
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/bin/firefox/firefox-bin: symbol gtk_init: referenced symbol not found.
It's very strange because GTK toolkit and JDK environment are supposed to be the core functionalities provided by Solaris. Does anyone have an idea what's going on?
    My system sum-up:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quand Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz
RAM: 2 Gb of DDR2 SDRAM
Motherboard: MSI MS-7529 (Intel G31 chipset)
    Monitor: AOC LM725
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT
Hard disk: 2 Western Digital HDs (SATA) 320 Gb each,
1 Western Digital external USB HD MyBook Essential 2, 500 Gb
DVD drives: 2 LG DVD drives (SATA)
Network card: Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
I use my system in the following way:
On the first hard disk, I have a one-partition 32-bit Windows XP SP3 installation (ported from my old computer).
On the second hard disk, I have a functioning Fedora Core 9 installed on the first half of the disk's space (the installation is self-organized into several Linux partitions, e. g. /boot, /swap etc; I am a newbie so I don't know too much about Linux partitioning - only specified to Fedora how much space it could use for its volume group). I installed Solaris onto the second half of the second disk.
It has be noted that my USB external drive seemed to conflict with the network or graphics cards during the Fedora installation and caused it to hang sporadically, so I installed Fedora with this disk detached. I also detached it when I was installing Solaris, though it seems to have not influenced the problems I experienced. I also have attempted installing Solaris before I did so with Fedora, but had the same issues.

Well, it seems that the cause of the problem was that my DVD image was just corrupted - I didn't check it vs MD5 codes supplied by Sun assuming it went automatically OK. I downloaded the image again (this time it was OK), reinstalled the system and successfully logged into JDS. However, I am still puzzled why Solaris doesn't offer to create a default non-root user during the installation process.

  • Installing Solaris as a guest OS on VirtualBox-1.6.0

I am using VirtualBox-1.6.0 as my VM on an AMD ATHLON 1800+ with 1GB RAM running Fedora 9 (uname -r = 2.6.25.3-18.fc9.i686). My first attempt to install Solaris was with Solaris10 11/06, while the second attempt was with Solaris10 05/08.
Solaris10 11/06: 1. Default screen resolution created a window too long with the bottom off screen.
Is there a recommended resolution when the host screen resolution is 1440x900?
    2. Guest Additions failed to install properly
What is the appropriate method for installing the Guest Additions for Solaris?
Solaris10 05/08: 1. Install hangs when installing as a networked system at system 77% initialized prior to the actual install.
    2. Install hangs when installing as a non-networked system when system is at 100% complete and about to reboot. I manually powered off the VM
unmounted the DVD image and then restarted the VM. When it rebooted, it complained that there wasn't a system on the hard drive.
In both installs, I went with the default config of the VM (512MB RAM, 8MB Video RAM, creating a dynamic virtual disk starting at 20GB limit), and the install media were iso's, 11/06 5 CD iso files and 05/08 1 DVD iso file.
    TIA
    Scott

Just redid the install of Solaris10 11/06 and this time I was able to change the size of the window so that it is within my desktop. I am running 32 bit apps as my AMD processor is only 32 bit, also I originally went with the CDE desktop and later switched to JDE. I was also able to install the Guest Additions for Solaris this time without any errors using pkgadd from the cli. I haven't retried the 05/08 version yet, but will post when I do. One thing in common with 11/06 and OpenSolaris.200805 is that the audio on my system does not work on either VM VBox 1.6.0. It reports that it cannot find any compatible device. It also complains about the UART device, although I don't have Serial Ports enabled. Also does anyone know how to tell VBoxSvr what host name to use with each VM?
    Fri. 27 June 2008
    I was able to install Solaris10u5 (05/2008) on VMware Server using 684MB of RAM and 20GB HDD. I did not have the tools addition for Solaris, I'm not even sure if there is such an animal, so I had to "Scroll the desktop" to maneuver around. I then tried it again on VirtualBox 1.6.2, got through the initial install setting RAM to 684MB, default Video no Serial ports or USB, although parts were painfully slow. I was not able to do the first reboot, it just sat there saying that it was doing system initialization and the indicator just kept on going back and forth. After about 20 min. I shutoff the VM giving up. Also I still can't get sound to work on either the older Solaris10 or OpenSolaris. In OpenSolaris the DDU indicates that 2 drivers are missing;
Audio; Intel 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller
    Other; ACPI AC Device
Anyone know if and when VBox or OpenSolaris will have these drivers?

  • Problem installing solaris 10 10/08  (x86) in multi-boot configuration

I'm trying to build a an x86_64 that can boot solaris10, Centos 5.3 and Ubuntu 8.10. (below is the linux fdisk data)
    I have successfully installed the Ubuntu (partition 3& 6) and Centos ( parititions 2 &5 ).
Every time I've tried to install solaris, I get "initial fdisk information on disk c0d0 was invalid" and
it wants to reformat the disk with 100% solaris. I've tried
    - setting /dev/sda1 as type BE with the Centos fdisk
    - setting /dev/sda1 as type BF with the Centos fdisk
    - setting /dev/sda1 as type 0 ( empty) with the Centos fdisk
    - setting /dev/sda1 as type 0c ( FAT32) and formatting the the partition as FAT32.
I get the same response from solaris each time. I'm new to solaris ( my last sunos exposure was 4.1.1),
and can't figure out what the problem is and don't want to rebuild the whole system.

  • Installing solaris from the hard disk

i am new to solaris. i just wanna know is there a way of installing solaris from the hard drive

If you are new to Solaris I would advise you to stick to CD installations. Atleast in the beginning.
Having advised that, it is known that installing from cd can be a bit tricky is getting the install going.
Don't be supprised if your first attempt fails with disk-read errors. Try again.
More specific in relation to your question:
Solaris has many ways in which you can install the os, and from hardisk over the network to the machine to be installed is one of these possibities.
If you where thinking about doing the install from one partition to an other partition of the harddisk, that I am afraid I have to dissapoint you.
NB: for every version of Solaris there are several Installation documents on the web: docs.sun.com

    <table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
Solaris 8 1/01requires specific patch installations. See 816-1712 for details.

    </td></tr></table>
<b>READ ME: Important Patch Installation Required Sun Blade 1000 Sun Enterprise 280R</b> is available from docs.sun.com.
The Blade 1000 and the Sun Fire 280R use the same systemboard, but a Enterprise 280R doesn't exist.
Either get Solaris 8 7/01 or Solaris 8 10/01 (for 900Mhz Cu) or a more current version of Solaris 8.
If you have a service contract, you can notify Sun (ssh-feedback&#64;sun.com) about this omission. It's your time and money you have spent when you got stuck ...

  • Could not install solaris 8 on my sparcstation-20

Hi, I tried to install solaris 8 on my sun machine.
    It failed, with
the error message, saying that it can't find the
    kernel file. Then I
tried to install solaris 6. It succeeded. I could
    not figure out why,
    anyone can help me?
Following is the output of uname:
    Generic 105181-05 sun4m sparc sunnw sparcstation-20

I installed solaris 8 on a sparc20 last nite. Could it be the media you are using? Try installing from the first applications cd, not the install disk.
My install was painfully slow due to the ancient cd-rom, but it did complete successfully.
    Good luck,
    - Adam

  • Problems installing Solaris 10 on Dell PowerEdge 800

    Hi,
I am experiencing some trouble when I attempt to install Solaris 10 on a Dell PowerEdge 800. It is equipped with two RAID disks controlled by a Dell CERC SATA 1.5/6ch (according to the BIOS).
The installation program reports that it cannot write to the disk. This happens when it is about to start installing files. Tried setting it to a single volume and disable RAID. Same thing. Read another article saying something about disabling IDE, well it doesn't seem to help ...
    Any hints?

I have the same problem on a dell 750 with the SERC controller. I can add some more information but if you get a solution I would appreciate the detail.
    1) If I install Solaris via the SERC in RAID 1 mode then the alarm on the SERC goes off as soon as I start to write to the disk.
    2) I bypassed the SERC and installed on a single disk straight off the motherboard. Time the install crashed at the same point but this time the error message told me that the first available cylinder was number 3! Ah
    3) I reconnected the disk via the SERC, rebuilt the RAID array and made a mistake. I created a RAID 0 (striped) array and installed the software starting from cylinder 3. I got a complete solaris install that rebooted fine and is fully working.
BUT I NEED A MIRRORED SYSTEM SO
    4) I rebuild the machine again this time RAID 1 and again the crash occured at exactly the same point i.e. as soo as I start to write to the disk.
Whether or not DELL / Adaptec support Solaris should not be an issue. This is a BIOS configurable RAID controller that can be fully serviced (e.g. disks replaced) from the BIOS. The system sees the array as a disk via the controller and indeed it is seeing it.
The SERCs own data configuration data should be on sectors which are not visible to solaris VIA the SERC so we shouldnt be able to damage them but I suspect that this may not be the case.
I suspect that the answer is in the partition layout and who or what creates them (I dont mean the Solaris slices but the FDISK partitions)
To make matters worse, since I need the machine working I went back to disks straight of the motherboard and configured again and used metadevices to set up a fully mirrored systemas I have done many times before on sparc (but never on Solaris x86)
This worked fine but I thought that I would test bootability in the event of disk failure. There isnt any!
if disk 1 fails then the motherboard wont accept disk 2 unless you swap the cables and move it do disk 1 and by then the boot sectors are wrong for the address of the device. I can probably solve this by building both disks in slot one but who wants a mirrored server that you have to open up and move a cable when the disk fails. I think I may have to ditch SATA and go back to SCSI !

  • Installing Solaris 8 on Acer Travelmate 330T

I can't configure my Acer Travelmate 330T, which had Windows 98SE installed, to run Solaris 8. There are a few problems:-
    1. The installation procedure will come to a point where it asked whether I want the program to fdisk cd0f0. If I answered YES, my Windows 98 is gone for good. If I answered NO, the installation stops. Does anyone have the solutions for this? Please advise (as I desperately need to dual boot with Windows and Solaris 8).
    2. I tried installing Solaris 8 into a brand new harddisk using the same laptop. I selected YES to the above fdisk question. Everything went on well (I supposed so). However, when it reach the stage of configuring the video display drivers, I was stucked there. My laptop has a Trident display card with 2.5MB of RAM and a 12.1" LCD monitor. I can't find the name of my laptop's display adaptor in the list. I tried a few combinations but all failed. Can anyone please help?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Check your motherboard and other hardware devices are
supported by intel Solaris x86 or not.
Check your hardware compatibility list try this URL:

    Revert back.

I have contacted Dell for the motherboard model number, but they were not able to provide the number (strange)
The URL you gave, does not have my DELL OPTIPLEX GX400 listed as this is a relavitvely new model, however the older system in the same series are shown to be comaptible.
