Installed Solaris, No OS-boot sector is recognized.
Hello,
I just installed Solaris 10 11/06 version on x86 Intel pentium. I followed through every steps, ejected the DVD and upon restart ,nothing happens, it mentions press a key to continue and restarts and comes back to the same point.
My assumption is that the menu.lst is not updated or not sure. There is no operating system boot happening,How do you set the bootloader to pick the Solairs Operating System from disk partition C0D0S0, what are the main entries in the menu.lst, is this what i should be doing. I logged via the DVD boot and get a prompt, i tried bootadm and other utilities, any help.
Basically the Solaris is installed but just need to configure the bootloader or bios to recognize Solaris OS is installed. My bios setting points to HDD.
Any help would be great
Thanks
MJ
A couple things you can I'd look at or do. First I'd make sure that your ribbon connected to your hdd is not loose. A bad ribbon, or intermitten one will cause your hdd not being recognized. If you're sure it good then try booting from the installation DVD and at the prompt type the following command:
installgrub
That should reinstall grub for you.
You can also try booting in safe mode and run the following command:
- bootadm update-archive -f -R /a.
That should update your boot archive.
More good grub info is located at:
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/grub_boot_faq.html#q19
Also, if you want to try editing you're copy of /boot/grub/menu.1st. Here's a copy of what mine looks like:
# default menu entry to boot

# menu timeout in second before default OS is booted
# set to -1 to wait for user input

Hello,
I run MacOS X 10.8.5 and Win7 SP1 installed on a MacBook Pro (model summer 2010).
I used to run Win7 using Parallels desktop. I have version 9.0.23036 installed.
Unfortunately, the boot sector for Win7 got corrupted or erased (???)
I have many professional apps installed on Win7, not easy to re-install...
=> I try to find a way to use WinPE to solve the issue.
But I cannot boot directly from WinPE (v3.n?) on a USB memory stick. It stops when loading the system files.
Is there a way to run WinPE anyway? Using Boot Camp? Using Parallels desktop? by copying some Parallels drivers onto the WinPE system? (but which ones? where to copy them?)
Is there any other way to re-create the boot sector for Win7 without a full re-install?
Many thanks for any help.Thank you very much.
I could make a bootable clone of the Ma OS side using Carbon Copy Cloner. This point is OK.
I sill get trouble with the WinRE environment: I cannot boot directly from the Win7 DVD: the loading of the system files stops at a certain point and I cannot get the Windows menu.
I could read a procedure on the Parallels.com support site (http://kb.parallels.com/en/5223) and tried to follow it (my Windows was installed using Boot Camp). The problem is that, unliked described on step 2 (Choose to "Start Windows Installation"), I can't get this choice in the Boot Camp menu. I only have two choices : "Download the latest Windows support software" or "Remove Windows 7 or later version". Do you know how I can get the "Start Windows Installation" choice, so that I can launch the Windows DVD through Boot Camp?
Thank you in advance -

I suppose you're booting off from the Solaris Installation CD which isn't
needed to install Solaris 8. Boot from the Solaris software CD 1 of 2.
This I suppose is very unsatisfactory for me.
please give a detailed solutions.
thanks in advance
with regards,
T Anil KumarFrom your post I do not believe the CD drive is at fault. I believe the machine you wrote the CD is at fault. I would create another set of bootable CD's using a different machine with a CD-R/W drive. I would write the CD at 4 speed and try again. Some Ultra 10's have the slower 4 speed CD drive. What OBP is telling you is the CD appears to be 'blank' or 'corrupted', that's the cause for the 'bad magic number' error. If you can find a bootable Solaris Installation CD I'm sure it would boot just fine. Another thing you might look at, I've seen this be a problem with CD's, is the recordable surface. Are there any finger prints, smears etc? If so, clean the record surface then try booting the Ultra 10 again.

Installing Arch WinXP Dual-Boot
Hello! I'm new with Arch-Linux.
I'm trying to install Arch with Windows XP. I looked at the guide and several threads but I can not solve my problem. I make an installation in "Legacy" because my drive is IDE. I have installed Win XP. I do manually the partitions partitions / boot, /, / swap, / home, all logic, after the XP ntfs. And then I install the grub in the MBR which is on the XP partition. When booting, I get a dual-boot XP and I started without problems, but when I boot Arch I get the following problem:
FileSystem CHECK FAILED
And here I have not managed to solve anything, I have consulted several forum threads where people could think the same thing, wiki, but I have not been solved. If anyone can help me with the installation, or if I am wrong partition table or something, I would be very helpful.
Sorry about my English, it isn't my frist language.
Last edited by xunele (2009-11-13 11:48:32)I can see two issues here:

The MBR is not on any partition, is sits at the beginning of your disk. Partitions have bootsectors. And you should not install anything into the boot sector of the XP partition, since that will make XP unable to boot. Wikipedia is quite good on these topics.
Secondly, /boot must be on a primary partition. -
Problem installing solaris 10 10/08 (x86) in multi-boot configuration
I'm trying to build a an x86_64 that can boot solaris10, Centos 5.3 and Ubuntu 8.10. (below is the linux fdisk data)
I have successfully installed the Ubuntu (partition 3& 6) and Centos ( parititions 2 &5 ).
Every time I've tried to install solaris, I get "initial fdisk information on disk c0d0 was invalid" and
it wants to reformat the disk with 100% solaris. I've tried
- setting /dev/sda1 as type BE with the Centos fdisk
- setting /dev/sda1 as type BF with the Centos fdisk
- setting /dev/sda1 as type 0 ( empty) with the Centos fdisk
- setting /dev/sda1 as type 0c ( FAT32) and formatting the the partition as FAT32.
I get the same response from solaris each time. I'm new to solaris ( my last sunos exposure was 4.1.1),
and can't figure out what the problem is and don't want to rebuild the whole system.
Any suggestions?

How to Install Solaris for Intel so that it boots off from a boot floppy?
Hi all,
Sorry to bother you with this one (I went through all documentations/manuals and could not find straight answers to following
specific questions):
I have one hard drive with 1st partition used by Windows XP and a second partition that's a blank FAT 32 (using Partition Magic)
I want to use for Solaris for Intel.
My very specific questions:
(1)That blank Fat32 partition: can I run the Solaris install over it ..or should I absolutely make sure that it's a blank UFS formatted
partition? I am asking you that because all manuals (except one) pretend that I can run my Solaris install on a blank Fat partition...
but I believe that documentation at multiboot.solaris-x86.org stresses that if the partition is not a blank UFS one, it wont install Solaris
(2)As you already know, some Oses like Linux or FreeBSD can be installed on a partition and be booted off a boot floppy.
So without that boot floppy, no trace of the OS. How can I do that with Solaris for Intel. I want my Solaris to boot off a boot floppy only.
BTW, I currently have Solaris 7 for Intel.
Thanks for the answers.(1)That blank Fat32 partition: can I run the Solaris install over it ..or should I absolutely make sure that it's a blank UFS formatted You can install Solaris to that blank FAT32 drive but Solaris WILL convert it to UFS BEFORE doing the install. In other words, after the install it will be UFS and not FAT32 anymore.
So without that boot floppy, no trace of the OS. How can I do that with Solaris for Intel. I want my Solaris to boot off a boot floppy only. Not that I know of. Some people have reported booting Solaris off of a USB drive though.

Installing Solaris 10 on Sunfire V120 via network boot from Linux
I have been given a free SunFire V120 server loaded with and old copy of Solaris 9. The problem is that this server no longer has the internal DVD/CDRom drive any more. Google'd for finding a replacement CD-Rom drive show cost more than the SunFire V120 unit itself.
The plan: Install Solaris 10 for SPARC on Sunfire V120 Server
Available:
-- Sun Microsystems SunFire V120 Server (1GB of Ram and 2x 36GB 10K RPM SCSI3 drives)

-- MichaelAnyone know where I can get the firmware (OBP) update / upgrade version 4.22 for the SunFire V120 server?
There is an old thread (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5137796) that talks of having to update your firmware 4.22.x, but I have looked through the SunSolve site and I cannot find a reference to this firmware any place for the SunFire V120 servers. -
Install Solaris 10 5/08 on T5x40 with boot device hardware Mirrored Volume
I will have to install Solaris 10 5/08 on a hardware mirrored volume as a boot default device.
According to the "T5140 & T5240" Administration Guide" (Page 57), we have to boot the server (T5140 & T5240) on a network installation image in single-user mode (*ok boot net -s*) before configuring the raid controller using "raidctl -c -r 1 c0t0d0 c0t1d0". So, I need to have a Install Server/Boot Server ready.
Is it possible to boot from the CDROM in single-user mode and then from the CDROM configure the raid controller using "raidctl -c -r 1 c0t0d0 c0t1d0" ?
Thanks in advance for the support.
JNVThanks for your reply.
I will try of course with the CDROM, It doesn't hurt ;-)
I was only hoping that someone could confirm. I suspect a trouble with the CDROM because it's not documented...
My customer doesn't have yet a Solaris server available where I could setup a boot/install server.
It means that I will have to find first a Solaris server and then setup the boot/install server to install the system (T5x40).

"Can't open boot device" mesage when installing Solaris 10 by cdrom
I am getting the following error message when I try to install Solaris 10 from cdrom:
"Can't open boot device."
The system I am trying to install to is a SunFire v100.
The boot command I am using is:
ok boot cdrom - nowin
I have used this cd to successfully install several other v100s without any trouble. I have tried another cd and get the same behavior. I have also tried installing another v100 and get the same error.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Please check the "cdrom" alias.

Getting an error 'Cannot open Boot device' while trying to install Solaris
Hi,
We were trying to install Solaris * on a Sun Sparc system and the CD rom drive does not seem to get recognised. When we try booting from cd rom we get an error 'Cannot open boot device' .
This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
ThanksCdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
hope this helps

Hd won't boot after installing solaris 10
I installed cd1 for Solaris 10 for x64/x86. Then I rebooted as I was instructed by the setup but the pc won't boot the hd. Am I doing something wrong? How can I boot my hd to solaris?
Having just installed Solaris 10 u1 on a system myself recently. This version now uses a different boot loader. So it may help others to know which version you are installing. (maybe it's opensolaris?)
Also, the drives on these systems are first partitioned using the DOS "fdisk" type partitioning. You basically create a SOLARIS2 type partition and build the "format slices" inside it. If this Solaris partition isn't marked as "active" in fdisk you will get no place fast. So check that first.
Usually the install does all this for you but depending on how you did the install it may not have. -
Re: Installing Solaris 11.1 and multi-boot manager
Hi,
I have several problems too (I'm newbie on solaris) installing Solaris in multiboot environment ( I have 3 hard disks on this pc)
Does the grub2 of solaris 11.1 boot linux or not ? if the grub2 of solaris 11.1 can boot linux I think I will install the grub2 of solaris in MBR, I have already triyed this with bootadm install-bootloader -M but there was already a grub2-pc of linux installed and it did'nt
delete the grub2 of linux, so I think I must use bootadm install-bootloader -fM to install the grub2 of solaris
if the grub2 of solaris 11.1 doesn't boot linux I will do as you said with the chainload of solaris (how can I chainload solaris in a recent grub2 ?
in menu entry :
insmod part_msdos
insmod part_sunpc
insmod part_gpt
insmod zfs
set root='(hd2,gpt1)'
chainload +1
(this last point is not important because I have other ways to boot linux and Iprefer to install the grub2 of solaris)
I cannot retrieve my root pool when I boot from the text install CD ROM, zpool import -f rpool doesn't succeed, must I do something after an installation (is it possible to save the root pool on a big usb key ?),(I think I will post another thread for that...)
thanks for your answers
Edited by: stephane_l on May 16, 2013 5:59 AMHi,
I have severals problems too installing soalris 11.1 in multiboot environment(3 hard disks on pc)
Can the grub2 of solaris boot linux?
I tried to install the grub2 of solaris after an installation but it doesn't delete the grub2-pc of linux, I think I should have use bootadm install-bootloader -fM to force the instalaltion in MBR
After that (it was my second unsuccessful installation) I have booted with the text install cdrom but the zpool import -f rpool didn't work, must I do something after an installation ? (should I save the root pool after my installation ? can I save the root pool on a big usb key?) I must perhaps post a new thread for this..

Problems installing Solaris 8 2/04
I installed Solaris 8 2/04 in a Sun Fire V120 (UltraSPARC-IIe 648MHz), the installation finished but when server restarted it displayed this:

i tried with boot -b but it did not solve the problem, when i tried to start the server normally it could not, I can oly enter to server in maintenance mode, and the sysem could not found a lot of files (like /usr/sbin) and commands (like ls, boot, init).
I found at the start of the installation this display

i do not know if is a hard drive problem. Please help me because i tried three times the installation but the problem still existsSince this is a fresh installation, you might consider starting it all over again.
You may have made some initial selections while prompted at the beginning of the install process, that accidentally omitted essential system files.
As for that device path and the disk? It's pointing to an external non-Sun peripheral that's connected to the rear external SCSI port. That drive has some bad sectors. ( I wouldn't trust a new OS on those sectors until you fixed them.)
The errors are not calling out either of the two possible internal drives.

i have installed the raid controller driver CPQary3-2.1.0-solaris10-i386, it is going ahead but not detecting the whole hard disk space. My hard disk space is SAS 146GB. There are two 146GB hard disk present. It is showing only 978 MB & only one hard disk. So please help me out. my mail ID is [email protected]I have a similar issue trying to load Solaris 10u4 on an IBM x236.
I had to put in a recognized SCSI card, attach an external array to the card, and install Solaris 10u4 on the array. Then I had to install the correct driver from OpenSolaris (an Adaptec one for IBM ServeRAID), and do a live upgrade onto the now-visible internal disks. Then I removed the array and cleaned up the traces from the live upgrade.
You may have to do something similar.
And last month the boot drive got corrupted when power was interrupted. "Oops. Wrong plugs..." This time the external array will stay connected.
