Installing a desktop application on a non-java machine

Hi,
I want to create an installable for my Java application (to be run on both Linux and Windows). However, I don't want to have my customers go through the process of installing Java first.
Is there any solution to this. I have read about InstallAnywhere, but cannot download it as it is huge and I have a very slow connection.
Thanks

LuanneIf you want to make your executable very small AND you are not using a GUI (any swing/awt stuff) then you can get JET. Jet produces windows executables that are very small if you don't use Swing. Otherwise you have to have the JRE installed.
Sorry, if you write a java application and don't compile it to native code with something like JET, then you MUST INSTALL a JRE. There is no way around it.
Programs like Install anywhere just make the install automatic, but you still have to drag an entire JRE with your program. Even if your program is only like 30k. Sorry, but that's the way it works. Windows is the same way, you need the multi megabytes of dlls to get even a simple windows program to work sometimes.

  • I can't install the desktop application

Last week I bought a new computer (iMac) and since I installed my files (with migration assistant) my Creative Cloud Desktop application is blank. I de- and re-installed the application several times but it still doesn't work. I have had the help of an assistant from Adobe but no effect so far.
    Anyone with the same problem?

    Hi Doordoor,
You can follow the link: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/other-downloads.html and download Adobe Application Manager. It will update at the first launch as the required Creative Cloud desktop application.

  • Cannot install Blackberry desktop application

I have a Windows 7 operating system.  I have now tried three times to install the Blackberry desktop application from the Blackberry website with the latest version of the program on my PC (including a reboot) to no avail.  I only get a message (from Soluto) that the Blackberry program has crashed and there are no solutions yet.  Any ideas on how to correctly install this program?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    I suggest this thread:

You may or may not need all that is there, but perhaps the Run As Administrator portion will help your situation.
If needed though, it starts with a process for cleanly starting over, and there is some discussion, and there is also a post (15) with links to older Desktop Software versions, if those are needed. Note that this is not, by any means, guaranteed to work...but it has worked for many to resolve issues they are having.

  • How do I install the desktop application for formscentral on my laptop?

How do I download the form central application on my laptop? It is currently installed on my desktop and I need to work on it from either computer.

When you go into iCloud there is an option to delete the account.  The help desk advised me that using this option only deletes it on the phone and not the actual Apple ID.  If you delete it you are given an option to keep content associated with this ID on the phone, which may be a good idea unless you want to completely refresh your phone.
Once you delete the account, you can then enter a new Apple ID.
I've just done it and it worked fine, leaving the original Apple ID intact and working on another phone.

  • Error Installing Adobe Air from Story Desktop Application Installer

This is truly driving me nuts already.
Every time I try to install the Desktop Application from the Story website, it says I must install Adobe Air. So I click Install, it shows the progress bar to 100%, then errors out with a window. The window header reads "Adobe AIR Installer" and the main section of the window reads "Couldn't write the application to the hard disk. Please verify the hard disk is available and try again." - There is a Retry and Cancel. Retry does it all again with same results.
No, I had no previous versions of Adobe Air. So I tried installing AIR direct from the Adobe website, and it installs fine. So I go back to the Story webpage and try installing the Desktop Application again and the exact same set of events as described above happens. I uninstalled the AIR install, tried again, same result.
I had Production Premium CS3 previously, and installed Production Premium CS5 UPGRADE. All the programs in the suite work like a charm!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with 208 Gig free on my C drive, as well as over 500 gig free spread out over two other drives. 8 Gig memory, and two Nvidia Qadro FX 3500 video cards (If that matters at all). Full admin rights to the PC, not limited in any way.
A quick Google search shows plenty of other people having the same problem,  just no known fixes I've found!
    HELP!!!
PS- I have a picture of the error message, but the insert picture link is greyed out and won't let me add anything to this post.

  • Accessing Non Java Applications thru Java Program

    Hye guys,
I need help regarding this :
Suppose I have a application which is non Java and application have several windows. Can I through a Java Program get the information abt the most active topmost window of the application?
I think that only windows Task Manager knows abt the application and the child process(which is a different windows in this case ) and thus my Java Program have to do the low level system programming to
get info from the task Manager, but that will be make my program platform dependent.
Can we have a generalised program for this problem?
Help in this regard will be highly appreciated..
    Thanks a lot

Hm, a platform-independent way to get information about OS-specific processes? Not likely.

  • Java or C++ for desktop applications

    Help needed!
We are a team of 5 programmers in a state agency who deal with federal contracts. About 70% of the applications we build are desktop applications. One of the team members strongly believes that learning C++ instead of Java would strengthen our positions. He strongly believes that Java is not cut out for desktop applications and Java is ideal only for web applications. None of us are very familiar with C++ and so we are intending to take classes in C++. (We are all Visual Foxpro, VB group currently). I have one year of programming with Java (web applications) I still don't want to give up on Java that easily. Well my question is - Is that member in the team right in saying that Java is for web and not for desk top. Can any expert give me a good comparison and so we can move on the right track.
Thanks for the help in advance!
    suman

Java can work fine for a desktop application, don't listen to him. Here's what you've got to consider:
    1. Tool set: One strength of java is its strong set of standardized tools. You can probably find great sets of C++ tools too, though, but this is a major factor.
    2. Speed of development: This depends somewhat on the strength and maturity of the toolset you are using, but in general, I think that java is faster to develop for 3 reasons: (1) because it smoothes over some of the inconsistancies between systems - you don't have to get as involved in the gritty details. (2) Java can often tell you exactly what line number your program is bombing, and in every case, it will give you a specific message about what kind of error you had (nullpointer, array out of bounds, etc vs 'Syntax Error') (3) Garbage collection
    3. Familiarity with language: Obviously if you've got to learn something new, that takes time.
    4. App performance: Java is probably going to be bigger, in terms of what has to be installed on the machine in order to run your app, and marginally slower than C++. It will almost certainly require a lot more memory to run well. Before you freak out about it being slower than C++ though, you should consider what kind of performance your app needs. If it's doing 3D rendering, C++ is probably going to be better. If most of it is UI components, and the back end processing is not that intensive, Java could be what you want

  • Questions on deploying Java desktop applications

    Hello,
I have searched the forums and been unable to find the information I need. I am not sure this is the appropriate forum to post at but had to start somewhere!
I have a Java desktop application which has only been used internally at my organization for R&D. We are now working with our legal folks on setting up various licensing options. The funding organization today said that they wanted the software set up such that deploying it externally would have behaviors such as:
    * preventing one CD being used to install on multiple machines,
    * preventing someone from copying the installed software from one machine to another,
    * have a way for the software to "expire" after a set amount of time.
I have never had to deploy software externally before (nor does it seem has anyone else at my organization - we do science R&D) and am at a loss as to how to best do this. I have googled around a bit but not found any solutions. Has anyone here done this and could perhaps give me some pointers?
    Much Thanks,
    Keri

Given you new not only to deployment, but also
posting to these forums, I will take the opportunity
to point out that I let this post be for a couple of
days since in had no Dukes assigned. To my
eye, dukes indicate how important a question is
to whoever asked it, and I do not generally have
time to answer questions that are not important.
You can add dukes to a thread at any time.
    kgoorley wrote: ..licensing options. ..

Web start apps. are usually deployed directly off
a server/internet site. Although deployment off CD
is theoretically possible, it is uncommon.
The basic answer to all your questions as asked is 'no'.
However, if the legal people can take a slightly different
line, and that server/site has some 'active' element to it
(e.g. it is generated using servlets), there might be other
    options worth considering.
The basic approach would be not to sell licenses
per machine, but per 'use', in the sense that if
I were to sell you a license, it would be for 'nn users',
rather than 'nn machines'. This means that if you
had a license for 'two' users (let's call them Bob
and Harriet), both Bob and Harriet could use any
PC in the organization to use the software,
but once they were both logged in, no further
users of the software would be allowed.
The way to achieve this is to have the application
'phone home' to the server and tell it the
    username(/password). Every 2-3 minutes,
the app. should get back to the server and
confirm it is 'still running..'. If the app. cannot
reach the server, it reports a problem to the
    user, and exits.
If the server does not get a 'still running' confirmation
in a time longer than that few minutes, it assumes
the app. is off-screen, and frees that 'licence slot'.
The reason to keep letting the server know it is
there, is that if Harriet were to be logged in, and
Bob accidentally trips over the power cord and
drops Harriet's computer in a screaming heap,
her app. will never have the chance to 'log out'
and inform the server to free the slot.
As such, it is important to allow her to log-in again in
'a few minutes' (which is probably about the amount
of time it will take her machine to reboot, and chide
    Bob for his oafish carelessness).
Using this system, the first & second requirements
above become redundant - as it is not the number of
PC's that we care about - just the number of users.
The third requirement could easily be handled on
the server-side, checking licenses as users
log-in, and confirming that license is still valid.

  • Creative Cloud application manager shows none of my installed apps

I've searched through more threads in the community than I care to remember but I'm still none the wiser ... so here goes:
I have a mix of CC apps installed (Encore CS6, Premiere CC, Photoshop CC & CC2014 and more) some for quite a while. Suddenly, a few days ago the CC apps manager decided that I have none installed. This is what I've tried so far (I'm on Win7 Ultimate 64-bit):
    1) Deleted the %AppData%/Local/Adobe/AAMUpdater directory. Didn't help
    2) Uninstalled and re-installed CC Desktop app. Instead of the Install button next to all the apps I now see Trial! A restart seemed to fix that but still it's pretending I have nothing installed
    3) Renamed the opm.db file in %AppData%/Local/Adobe/OOBE. No change even after another re-install of CC Desktop app.
    4) Quit the App Manager opened Illustrator CC 2014 and checked for Updates (this seems to fire up Adobe Application Manager but maybe not the full-blown CC desktop app, not sure).
    5) Uninstalled and re-installed the CC Desktop app. Before launching it I open Encore CS6 and check for updates. When I launch the CC desktop app it now decides that it wants to install Premiere Pro CS6 for me! I disagree and close the CC desktop app.
    6) I open a few more apps and check for updates. Re-open CC desktop and ... no installed app listed (but at least it doesn't try to install Premiere CS6 any more).
I noticed one thing: when I check for updates from within an app and click on Preferences from within the Adobe Application Manager window it shows me the correct list of installed applications. So the information on what apps are installed are on my stystem somewhere. Somehow, this abomination of an app that is CC Desktop can't read it.
I have read posts about the CC Cleaner tool. Don't even go there. Un-installing all my apps just to get CC desktop to work is putting the cart before the horse. Apart from the time and download allowance involved in that I also have no confidence that the CC desktop app will offer all the versions of apps other than the latest CC2014 releases. I still need Encore CS6 and I haven't tried all the 2014 versions yet on my existing projects, so I need to have the CC versions installed in parallel. After all, that was the whole point of the CC desktop app initially installed the latest release in addition of existing apps and not upgrading them.
I apologise for the somewhat lengthy post but I'm hoping it may save time in the long run.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.
    Many thanks

Similar problem just happened to me with the Creative Cloud Update 1.7.1.418—slightly different so I thought I'd share. I have multiple Adobe Creative Cloud programs installed on my computer, all working just fine. I updated the Cloud App to the latest version and then it shows me that I have only one program installed! All my previously installed programs (Photoshop and the like) still work but show as "install" instead of "Up to date". Initially I thought I'd have to re-install the Cloud app or recreate the OPM data base but then I noticed that some of the Cloud app preferences (Apps > Settings > App Language) were different to what I had set previously. I use English (International) language, the update had reverted the app back to English (North American). I flicked back to my previous language and bam, all my apps now show as being installed correctly.

  • How to distribute/sell Java database desktop application ?

    Hi,
I have developed a java desktop application(it is a kind of knowledgebase program) which uses mysql as a database, everything runs fine but I would like to know that how shall I distribute or sell my program.
    My questions in short:
How to create a "Setup.exe" for your java desktop application which also has a database?
How to publish/distribute my database with my java application?
    My Questions in detail:
I mean I want to create a "setup.exe" which users can download and then install it by providing the destination path(like any other program).
I also want users to add/edit data to the database by using the program's GUI, so my question is how will users be able to do that because obviously not everyone has a mysql database and service running on their computer and how should I provide the database with my program, should I provide the database file, but in that case anyone can access my database directly(by copying my database file to his mysql database folder), right ?
I am a beginner programmer hence I need a lot of guidance and advice, please give me all links, examples, articles etc, I am willing to read it all !
    Thanks everyone.

Is the DB meant to be editable?
Use any of a number of installers to install the DB, invoked from a webstart ExtensionInstallerService. Store the installation path using the Webstart PersistenceService (PS). Your app. will query the PS to get the path to the DB, start it, and go from there..
I have demos of the ExtensionInstallerService and PersistenceService on my site.
....but in that case anyone can access my database directly(by copying my database file to his mysql database folder), right ?If you give a DB to me, it's mine, buddy. Don't start this foolishness how the user might steal your data. If the data is so valuable, hide it behind a web service at your site and never actually give it to the end user. But really, your best protection in the case the DB data is distributed, is an EULA.
I am a beginner programmer hence I need a lot of guidance and advice, please give me all links, examples, articles etc, I am willing to read it all !Please give me cash. Deployment is the 'last 1%' of a project that consumes 10% of the time. Getting a good deployment is not a beginner topic and you will need to do a lot of searching & research and go through many trials and errors before you are done.
    Thanks everyone.No worries.

  • Java desktop application run problem

    Hi.
I have designed java desktop application which includes some libraries (XMLparserV2.jar, Ojdbc6.jar,xdb.jar, Orai18n-mapping,jar) with XML ini file.
Then I have done deploy to jar. After it I relocated jar file and XML ini files to separate directory and ran javaw -jar myjarfile.jar. I can't see anything.
Where I can see any errors ?
    Thanks for reply in advance.
    Andrii.

Try running java -jar myjarfile.jar from the command line and see if you get any errors showing up (probably missing classes in your path)
