Installing a new boot HD

My 120gb HD is full (boot drive). Powermac G4 1.42 duel with both HD bays 120gb HD's. I want to put a 250gb HD as my new boot disk.
The guy down at the apple store sure made this sound easy. You just take the new 250gb HD and put it in place of the old boot drive, have the tiger boot disk in the CD, and walla...put new install of tiger on the new boot disk.
Right.
Computer does do anything. BONG. dark screen, the CD never starts up. So I reinstall the old HD and BONG...grey screen of death with multiple languages telling me I'm screwed. I go through that a few times and finally get my computer back before I go into a full blown panic.
Before I go tampering around again, can anyone with better sense than the apple store saleman (pleasant fella) tell me more practical steps on installing a new boot drive?
I did go under the preferences panel and saw that I can force a restart on the tiger disk, but doesnt' really help me as that is an OS dependent function.
If memory serves correctly, I think many years ago I could go into a BIOS or something similar on a pc and force the computer to take a certain order of starting, which disk to search for first. Does the mac have a similar deal where I can force the board to start looking at the CD first?

First, how many hard drive bays do you have inside your tower? My G4 MDD tower has 4 bays. With the case open and the CPU on your right, two drive bays are on the left, under the CDROM/DVD drives. The other 2 bays are on the right and back at little, directly in front of the CPU heatsink.
The existing hard drive you currently boot up from should be on the right bay, in the backmost slot. It's jumper should be set to "Master".
You can put in the 250 Gb hard drive in the front slot of the same bay the existing 120 Gb hard drive is in. Make sure the 250 Gb hard drive has it's jumper set to "Slave".
You should then be able to boot up as normal and see your existing 120 Gb hard drive and the new 250 Gb hard drive (as an unformatted hard drive). To see the new hard drive you'll need to use the DiskUtility app in Applications/Utilities.
To install a new OS on the new hard drive, you can boot up from the CDROM containing the new OS (say Tiger). Before you begin the process of installing the new OS, click on the menu item "Installer" and you can get access to "DiskUtility". A copy of DiskUtility is also on the OS Install CD. Use the CDROM's copy of "DiskUtility" to format and parition the new hard drive, prior to doing the install of the new OS.
You should be able to go thru this install of a new OS with the new hard in a "Slave" jumper config, or with only the new drive in the tower, with the new drive in a "Master" jumper config.
To see how to set the jumpers on your new drive, do a Goggle search with the model of the hard drive and the name of the company. That should bring up at least one page from a support section of the company's website that will contain either Word docs or pdf's or online pages showing w/pics how to set the jumpers for Master or Slave settings.
Once you are done, in the case where you installed the new OS on the new drive, while the old drive was still in the tower, you'll need to shutdown the machine. Then switch the "Master" and "Slave" settings of the jumpers on the 2 hard drives. Then reboot and you should see both hard drives. You can then copy files over to the new drive and re-distribute the Users files as needed.

as the title says, ive had to install a new hard drive and i want to transfer my old itunes library onto the new drive, maintaining all playlists/play counts/ratings etc, album artwork if possible. The old hard drive is installed as a slave drive and is completely acessible, but due to the boot files being corrupted i cannot use it as the main drive and therefore operate my old itunes. Also, my ipod no longer contains my music library as itunes synced without my permission and wiped it.
The only thing i have tried is copying all of my old music files from the old drive by selecting 'add folder to library' and then the old drive, then replacing the new itunes library.itl file with the one from my old itunes. This restores all my playlists and playcounts but when i try to play any of the songs it says that the files could not be found, and i dont fancy locating 8500 music files individually!

Ah, my reply was based on the assumption that you had a default installation of iTunes.
i.e you had all your music in the iTunes media folder inside your iTunes folder.
If your iTunes folder is so small compared to the amount of music you have, you must have a different arrangement.
This complicates you situation considerably.
iTunes can cope with moving around as long as all the music is in the iTunes media folder, not not if it isn't.
Your first step should be to get iTunes working on the old drive. This will involve editing the xml library file so that the drive letter is correct and then rebuilding the library from the xml file.
Then you will need to consolidate your library which moves everything into the iTunes media fodler. After that you will be able to use my first suggestion.
Step 1
Find the iTunes folder on the old drive and copy the two library files somewhere else so you can find them again. That's iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml.
Now open the copy of iTunes Library.xml with WordPad.
Look for lines starting:
Location
These contain the paths to tracks.
You will need to use a find/replace to change the drive letter so that it is correct.
Make sure that you include enough in the "find" so that you only change the right thing.
Maybe /c:/ and replace with /d:/ or whatever.
After that, tell iTunes to use the library on the old drive with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the old drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
Then use the method in the following article to rebuild your library;

Unfortunately the date added will be today for all tracks.
If iTunes works correctly after this, consolidate your library
File>>Library>>Organize>>consolidate
This copies all tracks into to iTunes media folder and could create a problem if you do not have disk space so don't do it if you are unsure about free disk space.
Check that iTunes works OK and then use the first method.

i have now a question , what happens if i boot with win 8.1 boot able DVD and install a new windows ?
the main questions are :
1. does it recognize any of my partition to select for windows installation ?
2. if no , can i format any partition for new partition during windows installation?
3. if i could install a windows , who is the boot loader ? windows or mac ? can i still boot to windows or what ?

Give your previous partition layout, you cannot install Windows via Bootcamp, unless you are willing to give up all your extra partitions and go back to EFI, OS X and RecoveryHD only configuration.

1. Windows installer will not work and you will end up with driver issues.

3. You cannot, but if you could, the Apple Bootmanager would be your Boot Manager/Loader.

I'm trying to install a new hard drive on my Touchsmart but the recovery disks won't boot.

The Touchsmart 300-1120 is only 1.5 years old and it's hard drive is already fried. I bought a new hard drive, ordered the recovery disks, and it still won't boot. I've changed the boot order to go from the CD drive first, but all it does is click and then give the same error message it gave when the fired hard drive was in. I checked the diagnostic, and it can see the new hard drive...it just won't boot.

Sometimes they do work - i've done it before. I have a late 2008 Macbook Uni and used the install dvd of my 2009 Macbook White and it worked.
Why not just clone your hard drive? It'll save you a lot of time doing a clone rather than doing a clean install.
Unless you're having issues with your old set up or your old hard drive is dead.
You can download Carbon Copy Cloner - install your new hard drive in a external usb enclosure (around $10) and clone fromt here then test it before you install it in your Macbook.
Once you've done the swap, you can install your old hard drive in the USB enclosure and use it as a backup drive.

boot it up in the off line mode, without sim and see if it helps

Installing New Boot Drive ?

Sorry to double post but, had this in the wrong section.
Hello, fellow G4'ers.
Mine is G4 MDD 867 Dual CPU and has a giga 1.4 CPU upgrade, 1.75 GB RAM.
ATI 9600 Mac OS X (10.4.11). 400W PS
Still runs well enough for my purposes.. besides drives are pretty cheap these days, so why not.
I Have 3 drives total now. 2 are Internal, 1 is External (FW400).
1 - (original) Boot drive 60 gig (20 GB avail.)
2 - Maxtor 200 gig with 2 partitions,
a) 40 GB partition w/ 40 GB avail. and
b) 160 GB partition w/ 90 GB avail.
I also have a 250 gig FireWire External (bootable) drive that has a cloned, used CarbonCopyCloner,
backup of the main boot drive and still has ~ 180 GB avail.
I only want to replace the original (aging) boot drive BEFORE it goes bad.
I read somewhere here that a separate partition for the system alone, could b a good idea. can anyone confirm this for me ?
I got and installed the 2nd drive myself (Maxtor 200 GB), so I think I can do this.
I need to be sure, as to a plan of attack here (software-wise), and appreciate any input as to a good way to do this.
I'm sure there are a few ways it can be done.
My best guess's are;
1-get the new ATA drive (500 gig drives can be had for under $100) Any hot tips here ???.
(How's this sound "500GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 7200rpm 8.9ms 16MB Cache UltraDMA 100/ATA 5 HD" ?????
2-Check and be sure a good bootable backup of boot drive exists on the External drive.
3-Shut down and physically install the new drive, discard old drive, plugging it into the same place the old one was in. (I guess this is right, but not real sure about this, any jumpers to move/check ??? , ) any other possibilities here ?
Now the variables/my best guesses :
4.a ) Power On, Startup use the (C key), and boot with my Tiger Install disk, and install a fresh Tiger OSX 10.4.xxx system onto the new drive.
QUESTION; Not real sure how to get this updated to 10.4.11 yet, but I think there's a "Combo" that will bring it right up to 10.4.11, but I'll need my internet connection for that.
Perhaps boot with the clone/external and download the update file to disk and install it that way ??? Definitely need some help with this .
4.b ) I could just copy/Clone in reverse from External to the new drive (I should think a clean install would be better here as to not keep any system flaws from my existing system, including that messy stuff that the latest security updates introduced. But, this could work, right ? Perhaps not ? I think I would really like to have a New Clean system as the Original HD may be weak/flawed.
4c ) Perhaps there's a function in Disk Utility that can help with doing all this, Restore? Archive ? whatever ?
OK. That's about where I am here. I'm not really a noobey, but I just never had to do all of this and want to be sure of a good plan before I get started, and don't want to overlook anything.

Good News here, just to finish up.
I Got a FW external. Cloned boot drive to it (CCC 3.1.2). Did a archive & install on the external clone with Tiger DVD, and updated it to 10.4.11 + all misc updates. Fixed permissions between all phases. Deleted previous sys folder. Rebuild & optimize w/DiskWarrior. Pull old boot drive, install new WD 320 GB, connections were all "Cable-select", no master/slave stuff. Started up with tiger DVD and formated the seen new drive. Booted from external, cloned clean, archived/new SYS to new boot drive. Done.
Only a few small probs. with prefs. here and there, but all back and running fast & smooth and now I even have a regular backup plan to the external.

Mac Pro is booting to blue screen after installing a new Optical Drive

I am trying to install a new Pioneer 115D Optical Drive in the 2nd Drive Bay. After installation I turned back on my computer and it did not boot. I got to the blue screen and the computer just hung there. Any suggestions on what went wrong? I have read something about switching to cable select how might I go about doing that? Also Someone suggested to remove the drive lip. Does that need to be done before installation? I watched the OWC video and followed the instructions there but there was no mention about removing the lip or using Cable Select. Thanks for you help.

X4270 system not booting after installing a new SAS card

we installed a new SAS PCI card to connect it to tape drive. after installing the PCI card , the Solaris is not booting , seems like there is conflict between the onboard sas controller and one oncard controller.

I've checked the BIOS for boot order , and the issue is not with the order.

After installing brand new Macbook hard drive, boot to disk shows a flashing folder with a question mark

I had to install a new hard drive for my macbook after my last one had obviously crashed and was making clicking noises. The problem is I can't install OSX on my new one and I'm getting extremely frustrated. What could be going wrong? I've reset PRAM and done everything I could find suggested online.

Have you tried inserting the Snow Leopard Install disc and using Startup Manager to select the Snow Leopard disc as the startup disk? Once you get started up from the Snow Leopard Install disc, the rest of the instructions can be found in the manual for your MacBook Pro. Here are the ones for mine:
Installing Mac OS X and Applications — New Hard Drive

My mid-2009 MacBook Pro's hard drive is near death. I want to install a new SSD and work from scratch. Please help.

Recently, my mid-2009 MacBook Pro has been crashing when I close the screen ("it's having a problem recognizing when the screen is closed/open and deciding what to do, error overload etc."). It wasn't an SMC issue so I took it to an Apple Store, ran some tests, and decided my hard-drive is failing.
Not wanting to spend an insane amount of money on some "official apple hard-drive," I want to install a new 256GB SSD instead. Hoping to squeeze as much life out of this computer as possible (in January I upgraded from 4 GB RAM to 8 GB), I would like to try and start from scratch, i.e. back-up important folders, music, photos etc. and only take that to the new hard-drive. If someone could explain all the steps I need to take to safely complete this task (or point me in the direction of a guide) I'd appreciate it.

     Model:                mid-2009 13'' MacBook Pro
     Processor:          2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
     Memory:             4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

     Should I be concerned with making a fully bootable back-up (not sure what that is called) as well? If so, what program should I use to create it?

          word-processing. The batter was replaced in March, the RAM was upgraded to 8 GB in January. When the battery was swapped, the trackpad went           nuts so that's new too. Only other issues are a slightly loose audio jack and the left side of the screen being slightly wobbly (hinge is worn I'm told).

Well there is no "official Apple HD / SSD" in any regard, no worries there.
If as you say youre only using same for surfing and word processing, why the need for a SSD? You would not notice any speed diff. in use on either of those,....in boot times yes, but in word or surfing, not.
You can push it likely a few more years, for mere surfing and word processing,...many many years.   Up TO the point that any major fixes become unrealistic relative to getting a new(ER) machine.
Concerned with a boot clone? yes and no. Its an ideal immediate recovery, since you cannot boot from Time Machine, ....in case of HD crash, recovery takes seconds from boot, or 20 mins or so from removing old and installing a clone. All the prosumers and pros have at least one updated clone of their prime machines.
You can do a "fresh install" if you choose, however if your current drive is FINE, why not merely clone it and save yourself some headache?...., but that is your prerogative of course.    Ideally 2 drives, one to backup your data (you need that regardless of installing a new drive for sake of a backup/archive,...ideally 2 actually, not merely one).
You could clone internal to NEW SSD/HD , ...then offload unnecessary files to an external to free up space and clutter and run off the clone, and this would only take a couple hours......the clone itself takes approx. 40+ mins.
CLONE Apps :
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

Problem trying to install XP via Boot Camp, computer almost died

I just recently purchased a 24" 2.8Ghz intel iMac 500GB harddrive with OS X 10.5.2. I plugged everything together yesterday morning and the computer was going fine, just liek a dream. On a side note I was genuinely impressed with the ease of setting up and how quick, intuitive and reliable the mac and OS X Leopard was.
This is a bit long but I think I need to go into detail what happened in order for any of you to fully understand what happened to my mac.
Later in the afternoon I decided to install Win XP via Boot Camp. I knew that XP SP2 or later and VISTA was recommended but I decided to use my XP Home Edition "2002 version" install disc instead.
I opened up the Boot Camp Assistant, partitioned 15GB of the 500GB harddrive, inserted WinXP install disc and the computer restarted with everything going to plan thus far. I was going through the install process as normal but I came to a window asking which partition to use to install XP ("c" or "d") or if I wanted to create another partition. I also had my iPod still connected to the computer and I think the installation recognised that harddrive too (all 12GB of space left on my iPod). I wasn't sure what to do so I decided to quit the install process by pressing the relevent keys ("press F3 to quit" etc). Upon automatically restarting the computer I first came to a white screen for about1 or so minutes and then a black screen came up with white text asking me to "press any key to 'something' the CD" (can't remember what the rest of the text was), but the keyboard was unresponsive. I turned the computer off and unplugged it as according to the instruction manual that came with the mac, waited the suggested 5-6 seconds, turned it back on but I came across the same screens. I couldn't eject the XP install disc either. I restarted the computer again, held down the eject button whilst restarting, the disc thankfully ejected but I then came across the same black screen but with no text, just a white flashing underscore cursor. I decided to remove my iPod and restart the computer again. AGAIN I came across the same white screen, then black screen with the flashing white underscore cursor and unresponsive keyboard. I decided to insert the OS X install disc 1 (I don't remember if I inserted it whilst at the black screen or if I restarted the computer and THEN inserted the OS X install disc). The disc loaded slowly but I eventually went through the install process (choosing your language) and then came across a window asking me "Where would you like to install OS X?" but I couldn't install it anywhere. I opened "disk utility" or some program with the word "disk" in it, had no idea what I was doing, somehow created a new volume (though I thought I was actually erasing the XP partition I set up earlier) but in MS-DOS FAT Format or something. I then was able to choose a place (or volume) to install OS X but I had to change the format of the untitled volume from FAT to something along the lines of "Mac OS X journaled (enabled)" (whatever that means). There were other format options available but I just chose the top one on the list (Mac OS X journaled (enabled)). I then made a full install of OS X 10.5.2 and late last night downloaded the latest pdate for Leopard (10.5.4) along with other updates. The computer is working fine now thankfully andeverything seems to be back to normal.
I just want to know what actually happened. What did happen to my computer? Did I somehow wipe the harddrive? Why didn't the computer reboot to HDD when I ejected the WinXP install disc? Which format is the HDD formatted to? What does "Mac OS X journaled (enabled)" mean? Also how come my HDD is 500GB whereas when I checked Boot Camp Asistant a second time (but not installing Win XP again) My HDD is 460GB with 440GB of available space? Is there still another partition I am unable to see? Is there an extra 40GB of data floating around the harddrive that I'm unaware of? What are the factory settings for my computer? I really hope I haven't formatted the disk and installed the OS to settings that weren't like how the computer was originally set BEFORE I regrettably tried to install WinXP via Boot Camp.
If anyone could respond or give me some sort of advice, explanation or help I would very much appreciate your assistance.

According to wiki "the documentation from Apple states that Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista is requisite for a Boot Camp installation, and it also mentions that trying to install an unsupported operating system could prevent the computer from booting even into Mac OS X". Sure that was from wiki, but it does seem to support and somewhat validate the problem I had with installing an earlier edition of XP.

Thanks for the info on the Filesystem info. My problem is that installing OS X on a mac is just a little bit more technical than installing Windows on a PC as there are a few more things to consider. Plus I'm not familiar with any of the utility programs as well. It's a **** miracle I managed to somehow create a volume to install OS X on when I thought I was erasing the partition I created for WinXP.
But I'm still not sure about the missing 40GB from my 500GB HDD. Upon coming to the desktop straight after OS X was fully re-installed I noticed that the HDD only had 460GB and that 440GB of it available space. So the full installation of OS X was 20GB, but where has the other 40GB gone? I swear I saw that I had much more available space on my harddrive (BEFORE I tried to partition my HDD under Boot Camp Assistant and stuffing up the computer). Is the missing 40GB from the ORIGINAL FACTORY INSTALL of OS X INCLUDING all my iTunes music and other files I uploaded to the computer earlier? It would make sense but there's no way, as far as I know, of checking this. Any ideas?

You are referring to OFFICE 2010, not Windows XP or 7.
And which version of Windows do you have?
NEVER begin before you have a backup, ideally one you have tested and know works.
You don't really install Boot Camp, the Assistant is a partition tool utility.
You may just want Office 2008 for Mac.
If you need Office for Windows, perhaps run Windows in a VM like Parallels or Fusion.
Buy some backup drives and start using TimeMachine for one backup, then weekly backup with SuperDuper.
IF there is now a partition for Windows, all you need is to buy Windows, and I would recommend Windows 7 Home Premium (retail) which is about US$149.
Has nothing to do with free space. Office 2010 isn't to boot from. In fact, you can copy the disc to a folder (1.25GB) and run SETUP from there.

How do I install a new system file to replace the damaged one

I am tring to repair the permissions on my computer and am getting all of these types of errors. Computer is dragging. I reinstalled my operating system and this is what is happening. Any suggestions. Happening on my desk top I Mac and on my Mac Book. I did google search and Error 23 is "These errors indicate that the Mac tried to access one of the standard routines in the system file and couldn't find it. In all probability, that means you have a corrupted system file. Try installing a new system file to replace the damaged one."

I would apply or reapply the 10.6.8. Combo Update from Safe Boot (hold Shift down at startup -- give it much more time to boot than usual and leave it in SB for a few minutes before doing anything.)
