Installing Java SE JDK on top of JRE?

Hi List,
this is my first post here and I just have a somewhat general question about best
software installation practices. I want to install the Java SE JDK on my Windows
x86 system and already have the JRE 7 on it.
Now there are two choices I see myself having:
1. deinstall JRE 7 and install a freshly downloaded JDK 7, which includes the JRE.
or
2. simply install JDK 7 over JRE 7.
Are there any differences? Maybe it doesn't even matter how I do it, but this is
something I don't know?

This is basics of the basics of windows usage you're asking about. If you want to be lazy just install, if you want to be safe uninstall and then install. Either way, it all depends on how you've treated your software installation what the end result is going to be. If you have a clean system either way will work just fine.

Java SE JDK 6 and 7 are available from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

We developed an applet which uses JAI 1.1.. yes of course with JRE1.3.1 plugin. The applet functions as a viewer for TIFF images and also allows users to manipulate them. We have ensured that there are no static variables and scope defined for variables is the minimum required. But we are still facing an undefined memory issue.
When print is executed on the image (using Java2D), a few times ... it just hogs memory. Or I change the image loaded 2 -3 times and refresh the applet, it seems to run out of memory, and finally hangs.
We have tried to do a System.gc.. to no avail.
Would appreciate help on this.

I have some troubles installing Java JRE on Windows 8.1 x64 (latest updates installed).
Incedent scenario:
OS: Windows 8.1 x64 german in windows domain (clean/fresh installation from USB stick without any other programs installed)
following installations worked without any problems (install user is domain admin):

I have the same problem on two German windows 8.1 machines! I'm able to install the JDK but not the contained or separate JRE -> tested with JRE 7u67 & JRE8u20.
The suggest workaround (user: 2709705) -> install the english language pack.
Maybe a interessting information -> I saw the "Restore Java security promts" dialog the first time after the english language pack installation & the default display language switch.

After installing java 1.8 jdk javac still reports 1.6

if I do: /usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.8.0_31 --exec javac -version Unable to find any JVMs matching version "1.8.0_31". javac 1.6.0_65 Notice how --exec javac -version in the previous one-liner does find the javac, but it reports the old 1.6. How do I fix my paths so that javac works?

Got this issue fixed. Notice that above I had said that Java 1.8 got installed but only as a Plug-In. I did not appear to have installed the complete JDK. I had to remove the Plug-In and reinstall Java 1.8

java -version
java version "1.8.0_31"

Now I need to change my symbolic link for javac:
Before:
javac -version
javac 1.7.0_75
After:
$ sudo ln -s /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Commands/javac javac
$ javac -version
javac 1.8.0_31
Now everything works

jre-6u1-linux-i586.bin is the runtime. You will need to download and install the full JDK from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp .
JDK = Java Development Kit , used for developing java programs.
JRE = Java Runtime Environment, a subset of JDK, used for executing java programs. The end user machines will need only JRE installations but developers will need to install JDK.
- Java Studio Enterprise 8.1 is built on top of NetBeans 5.0. I would like to suggest that you consider using the latest NetBeans 5.5.1 (oe even latest milestone build of NetBeans 6.0) instead of JSE8.1. NetBeans 5.5.1 has add-on packs that support all the features of JSE8.1 (except portletbuilder).

IMac: Install Java 7 need help!

Hello, I've an iMac with the newest software version, I want to install java 7 on it for a game server, but when I download it from java.com and I install it and start the server, it still says: Computer on java 6, update to 7 to run server. I already tryed to install with Terminal and direct acess to System Library, it shows that java 7 is installed, but I have to delete java 6. When I delete all java versions, apple says I have to install java SE6, what isn't java 7 but java 6! Help please!!!

The Oracle JRE is only a web plugin. If you need server-side Java, you'll have to use the Apple-supplied Java 6 runtime, or else the Oracle JDK (which is not a drop-in replacement for Apple's Java.) If your server application depends on Java 7, you'll most likely have to run it on another operating system.

This procedure installs the Java Development Kit (JDK) for 32-bit Linux, using an archive binary file (.tar.gz).
These instructions use the following file:
jdk-8uversion-linux-i586.tar.gz
Download the file.Before the file can be downloaded, you must accept the license agreement. The archive binary can be installed by anyone (not only root users), in any location that you can write to. However, only the root user can install the JDK into the system location.
Change directory to the location where you would like the JDK to be installed, then move the .tar.gz archive binary to the current directory.
Unpack the tarball and install the JDK.% tar zxvf jdk-8uversion-linux-i586.tar.gz
The Java Development Kit files are installed in a directory called jdk1.8.0_version in the current directory.
Delete the .tar.gz file if you want to save disk space.

The recommended way to install Java 8 on Debian is apt-get install openjdk-8-jre, but you'll have to wait until that package actually exists, which is not the case yet. Neither of the above ways you mention are recommended on Debian, but both should be working.

Installing Java EE SDK on 64-bit Red Hat Linux

I've went through a lot of pain to get J2EE SDK / GlassFish server on a AMD64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 server box. Maybe it helps somebody.
Long story short, it all seems to boil down to the fact that the J2EE Linux .bin (non-RPM) packages Sun provides require a 32-bit JVM running. So if you just installed 64-bit JDK you're toasted.
Chronicle of pain and solution below:
Downloaded the Linux packages for full EE5 SDK, also the bundle for GlassFish from http://java.sun.com/javaee/downloads/
Tried ./java_ee_sdk-5_08-jdk-6u17-linux.bin No luck. First I didn't have libstdc++.so.5 but so.6. I did
yum install compat-libstdc++-33
Tried again. It hanged:
*** glibc detected *** ... double free or corruption error
Downloaded the JDK RPM version. It worked fine:
# java -version
java version "1.6.0_17"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode)
Let's go again with EE SDK. Nope. Different error this time:
*** glibc detected *** ./java_ee_sdk-5_08-jdk-6u17-linux.bin: malloc(): memory corruption: 0x0992d2c0 ***
Tried setting env variable MALLOC_CHECK_:
export MALLOC_CHECK_=0
New error, but no hanging this time:
Attach to native process failed
Realized that JDK packages were platform-specific, unlike J2EE packages. Googled this: http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=37370
Downloaded 32-bit JRE (i586, not 64-bit) RPM package and installed it.
Redirected default java link to 32-bit JRE's JVM:
cd /usr/java/
unlink latest
ln -s jre1.6.0_17/ latest
Run installer again, explicitly saying where was the JVM the installer needed:
cd /tmp
./java_ee_sdk-5_08-jdk-6u17-linux.bin -javahome /usr/java/jre1.6.0_17
It worked! :-)
Then reverted back to JDK's 64-bit JVM:
cd /usr/java/
unlink latest
ln -s jdk1.6.0_17/ latest

same error as you reports. There was also an error and IIRC an incompatibility with the latest java plug in for firefox .

It did not work on first attempt.

Installing Java 6u10 beta on an openSUSE linux computer

Alright, I hope I posted this in the right spot.
I recently started running openSUSE and am clueless as to how to run the package manager for it. So I decided to download the Java 6u10 JDK and install it manually. However, I'm not quite sure how to do that, either. The only command I know as far as installing packages is
"sh packagename" or "sudo sh packagename"
It appears to work at first, but after I agree to the license stuff, it throws a bunch of errors and fails.
How do I install the JDK?
