Installing on external HD - Possible?

Hi, I am just starting to learn the Basics of Mac Os x Server, and for now want to install just to mess around and learn the ropes! Is it possible to install it on an firewire External Hard drive similar to OS X? When I tried it told me that it could not install on that volume, and the options button was greyed out.

Hi
This should be possible however I’m not sure what you mean by this:
Is it possible to install it on an firewire External Hard
drive similar to OS X?
Have you formatted the external drive first? Also not all external firewire drives support bootable systems, is your drive one of these?
What about approaching it from the other way? Clone the existing OS onto the external and boot from that to test if its possible and then clean install OSX Server on the internal drive or once you have verified you can clone the existing OS onto the external and successfully boot from it clean install the Server.

  • Installing on External

Hello. Does anyone know if it's possible to install After Effects onto an external drive, specifically a Firewire 800? I have access to some pretty beefy machines that I'd like to render off of; unfortunately, they don't have a few of the plugins and scripts I use and installing those is not possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No, you cannot install AE on an external drive and then plug it into another computer and use it. All the licence scheme for the products and Plugins are stored on the workstation.
Your only option is to install the plugins on these powerfull workstations.

Buy an external FireWire drive (and FireWire cable if you don't have a spare or the drive doesn't come with one). Then, just plug it in. Not much for installing.
If you mean replacing your internal drive, that's another matter entirely.

Yes. My laptop does not support booting from usb-cd and usb-hdd
But I installed Arch by grub4dos to boot from iso, connect external dvd and start installation. System successfully detected the dvd drive so I could install a new system!

  • Software update for A2109A - how to install from external sd?

I bought my wife and son an A2109A tablet each just a few days ago. I immediately did an ota update. When I checked if there any further updates it said the tablet had the latest software from 297 days ago.
I see everyone on forums talking about a jellybean release for this tablet so I had a look on Lenovo's site and sure enough, there is an update released on 20th Feb 2013 with the filename a2109_jb_gpl_rc1_227.tar.bz2. I downloaded this, put it on an ecternal sd card and booted into recovery mode. The tablet did a search for an update, found it but couldn't verify the update. I chose the "install from external storage" option, but it couldn't see the file. I renamed the file to "update.zip" and tried again but it aborted again both automatically and manual install.
What do I need to do to install this update?

You tried to install the kernel source on your tablet? You can't do that, What OS are you running? if you don't have jb, the system update should allow you to update.

    iMac Intel\iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

A boot disk for the Intel Macs needs to have a GUID Partition Table, the G4 needs the "Apple Partition Map". If you formatted the drive on your Intel Mac, you may need to repartition for the G4. In the "Partition" tab in Disk Utility, use the "Options..." button to choose the partitioning. Backup any data on the drive that you need, first.

If so, connect it to the Mac, launch Disk Utility in the Utilities folder and format it as noted here:

I am going to buy an external HD, and want to know if i can install tiger onto it? to use.....for the time being for FCP (some plugins not compatible)

    I got a Sumo 320GB instead of the 250 .
Formatted in the way you need to boot in intel-mac. Installed OS X Tiger and it all works perfectly, and there is really no speed difference.
I do have a question, I can not access files from my internal HD now from Tiger. How do i allow Tiger to access my internal Leopard?

  • 10.7 install to external drive results in only "user" account

There is a problem which I have had couple of times when installing OS X Lion onto an external drive while running 10.7 off of the internal drive. The problem is that the OS install on the external drive gets created with only one user account, the same user account as what's running on the internal drive during install, except on the external drive the user account does not have admin privileges. So when booted off the external drive, there's no way to act as administrator, including upping the only account's privileges you have access to!
The only way to get an admin account on the OS instance on the external drive is to delete the hidden AppleSetupDone file on the external drive and then boot and let the OS go through its first run procedure.
Obviously the design team for OS X Lion one of the install as streamlined with the user being presented with the fewest choices and questions during the install is possible. However, not being presented with choices about the number and types of user accounts that will be set up during such an install clearly has its downside.
If the install on the external drive is going to duplicate the account that's currently running during the install, then it should at least copy those privileges as well. Ending up with an OS instance with no account with admin privileges is obviously not acceptable.

    Wrong again.
Have you ever installed to an external drive while booted 10.7 from the internal? I have, multiple times, and always the same result. I end up with the same account I was booted into on the internal at the time of install, duplicated on the external drive. Same account name, same password, and it's a *user* account. Not admin.
    Here's what I do:
While booted on my MBP 13" internal hard drive, I open and run the 10.7 installer contained in "InstallESD", with the installation target being my external USB drive. The install finishes, the computer reboots off the external drive. No "Bienvenue, Welcome, Aloha etc.", no catchy music, no setup steps or installation completion. Just a login screen. I put in the login info for my account on the internal hard drive, and there I am, booted into the external drive, as *user*.

Right YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!!!!!
Sorry but I am not wrong.
Boot the system from either the Recovery HD partition or if you have a Lion Install USB thumb drive boot from that. Then select Re-Install OS X and point it to the external drive. Do not start the Install from inside the OS installed on the internal drive.
I thought that would be apparent, but I guess not.
If you have not made a Lion install USB thumb drive I suggest you do that using LionDiskMaker.

  • Installing from external dvd rom

    Hi,
Is it possible to install solaris 10 from external dvd rom. If yes then how?
    Thanks,
    Javed

I just did this on a Sun E420, attaching a SCSI DVD-ROM to the external SCSI connector, so that it's on a different SCSI bus.
Did a probe-scsi-all to see the device.
Did a devalias cdrom to see what that path looks like
Did a devalias dvdrom <path to DVD like the cdrom>
    boot dvdrom (worked)
to make the device alias permanent (devalias setting is lost after reset or power down) use nvalias command (like the devalias) and make sure the use-nvramrc? OBP env variable is true. (see online OBP docs).
If you have a x86/x64 system, this won't help.

  • Mac OS X won't install on external FW drive.

I recently purchased a new Intel iMac and I wanted to use the backup FireWire drive I had been using with my previous computer as an emergency startup disk incase something were to go wrong with the main HD. When I had used the FW drive in this capacity with my PowerBook, it worked just fine; I installed the OS (10.3.9) and was able to start up from the drive itself. However, after attaching the drive to the iMac and attempting to install a minimum system from the OS (10.4.4) install CD, it prevented me from selecting the FireWire drive with a message saying that this was not possible because the computer cannot start up from the external FW drive.
Why is this? Did something change between 10.3.9 and 10.4.4 to prevent this? Or is it something specific to the iMac itself?

Your external drive must be re-partitioned using the GUID partition scheme in order to install a bootable system on it. Be sure to use the Disk Utility that came with your Intel Mac. Select the hard drive from the left side list, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Select the partition numbers, then click on the Option button. Select the GUID partition scheme and click OK. Now click on the Partition button. After the volume mounts on the Desktop select it in the DU left side list, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Click on the Options button and select the option to Zero Data (one pass) and click OK. Now click on the Erase button. The format process could take from 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the drive.
