Installing S-ATA hds

Do I need to disconnect my P-ATA hd before installing my 2 new S-ATA hds or can it stay connected?

Are you planning on installing an OS on one of the SATA drives?
If yes, just install 1 SATA and 1 CD/DVD drive to install the operating system. After it's installed, put in the rest of the drives.
See the FAQ #5 for the correct Bios settings to enable everything properly.
If you're leaving the OS on the PATA, just enable the SATA channels in the Bios, attach the drives and boot the computer. If you have XP, you just need to partition/format the drives and they'll work fine.

  • How to install S-ATA RAID ?

So i use two ordinary ATA drives,
machines boots 'n all; no problems there.
Now i want to add two S-ATA drivers (raid-0) in my msi 875.
I put the drives in SER3 and Ser4 on the MB (manual p 2-19 shows which these are).
    The software installs.
^F allows me to define te two drives as RAID,
The device manager shows under SCSI and RAID controllers:
    WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE Controller,
    along with an exclamation mark:
This device cannot start (Code 10)
I have also tried de-installing the drivers, and other SATA drivers on the CD. Same result.
Who knows what to do ?
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hit f6
    later hit 's'
    selected XP sata raid
then when it should format the disks it says no hdd (darn it!!!!!)
Well I think I have something that works now but what performance hit will I take After 'S' I choose the XP fastreack driver not the SATA raid.  It is formating now.

  • Newly installed Ultra ATA hard drive not showing up anywhere-HELP!

Just installed (I thought) a 300 GB hard drive on top of my factory installed 40GB. Tried it once as the master and then as the slave. Still, it doesn't show up in disk utility so I can format it. I do not have it set for cable select.
Any help would be appreciated because I couldn't find a similar question in the past posts. Thank you!! ")

I thought it was a Sony but apparently only my CD drive is - I can't tell if it is a WD! Here's are the specs on it... Does that model # tell you anything about it?
    ST340016A:
    Capacity: 38.18 GB
    Model: ST340016A
    Revision: 5.21
    Serial Number: 3HS5SPFX
    Removable Media: No
    Detachable Drive: No
    BSD Name: disk0
    Protocol: ATA
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    OS9 Drivers: Yes
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified
Also, the instructions I have don't tell me how to set up the old HD as master w/slave present. Currently, I have no jumper in the new HD and the old HD has a jumper in the master/single drive spot.
The instructions are more geared to a Windows PC of course. In the troubleshooting section is does talk about having to put a (capacity limiting) jumper on the pins all the way to the right for computers that do not suport high-capacity drives.
Now that I've had some sleep I'm going to get back down there and see if I can't refigure my connector situation.
BTW-yes, I figured out too late that I would not be able to use all of the GB on this drive. This is a learning process for me as I'm a busy mom of 3 boys-I generally figure things out in my "spare" time. Ha, ha! I so love .Mac and the support-what a lifesaver!
I HAD been wondering how difficult it would be to install the controller card. Is that something I can do down the road assuming I actually get my new HD showing up?
    Thanks!

  • Trouble after installing S-ATA Drive

When I installed my S-ATA drive the Bios (1.9) don't show my 2 CD drives.  The primary shows my 2 P-ATA drives and the secondary shows the S-ATA drive?  Also the performance of this drive is slower booting up than the Ultra 66 drive.  Any sugestions?

For later Bioses you need to use Native mode to use both IDE channels and the SATA channels.
From the FAQ posted by Maesus:
    Quote
    Native Mode
ATA Configuration: SATA Only or PATA only, depending on which you want to be the FIRST BOOT device!
S-ATA Keep Enabled: Yes if you chose PATA only
P-ATA Keep Enabled: Yes if you chose SATA Only
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
Combined Mode Operation: - doesn't matter
    S-ATA Ports Definition: - doesn't matter
Configure as Raid: - No (raid boards only)

  • Installing 500Gig ata hard drive

Hi,I'm going to install a 500gig ata hard drive to go along with my 250gig ata drive. The 250gig is on a 133 controller card that will support 4 drives. My question is:do i format the drive first or can i just clone the 250 to 500 with super duper.

    Hi-
Hard drives add a bit of heat to the interior of the tower, so a PCI slot fan would probably be a wise investment.
Although the PSU would probably be OK, the other upgrades may not appreciate additional heat without additional cooling.
Getting some of the heat out before it all goes through the PSU will help keep the power production steady.
Removing some of the heat from the Radeon and the CPU upgrade with the help of PCI slot fan won't hurt either.
A PCI cooler has minimal amperage requirements, so it should not overburden the power supply.
As compared to earlier drives, late model drives do run cooler.
WD drives are some of the coolest running drives.
One might consider getting some external drives, though. Two internal drives should be plenty for OS, applications and scratch.
Putting files, music, photos, etc. on an external FW drive won't affect performance adversely, and will reduce the heat and power loading of the tower.
Make sure you have an external backup drive that can backup all of your "working" drives.
Another benefit of an external drive housing, is that you can use a SATA drive, up to 2TB capacity now, and connect by FW. This way, you get the benefits of SATA capacity, and don't have to buy a controller card.

  • Installing ATA harddisk in G5 quad!?

    Hi Forum
I try to install my old ekstra harddrive ATA hitachi 7200 rpm from my old g4 into my new G5 quad.
It's not looking like it's possible.
Yet in the instruction book witch comes with the byu.
It says : how to install a ATA harddisk.
In short when i look inside my G5 it doesnt look like that the powersupply and the datatransfer kables are compatible with an ATA disk.
    Is this correct?

    Hi Bo
Instead of mounting your ATA drive internal to the G5, I would suggest getting a Firewire enclosure for it and using it as an external drive.

  • What do I need to install 2nd drive on old Sawtooth?

Hope its OK to ask about legacy computers on this board!
I have a powermac Sawtooth (450 ghz AGP) running OS9.2 - and was recently given some graphics programs that run on os 10.4 (Tiger)
I know its possible to install Tiger on the computer but would rather install a second internal HD and leave the original drive intact.
Since the capacity on the current HD is pitiful, was thinking I would also prefer for the second drive to have greater storage capacity (500 GB+) but my research indicates that as it is, this computer does not recognize HD's over something like 160 GB.
My QUESTION is: what are all the things I would I need to buy to install a bigger-than-160 GB HD on this computer? Except for adding more memory, I never upgraded it, all the expansion slots and bays are available.
    Thanks!

    B Lee wrote:

    Virtually Mandatory!
And remember, a practical old time doctor starts by feeling his patient's purse!
    You can: add a 120 GB HD; add two 120GB HDs, cloning your present drive to one of the new HDs; substitute 160GB (or larger) HDs for the 120GB HDs (remembering that your Sawtooth will read the first 128 GBs of the HDs;
Or: add an ACARD 6280 controller card that will format larger (ATA) HDs to read like SCSI drives, but will let your Sawtooth handle larger than 128GB size HDs. The ACARD is a good quality card, popular in G3 days, is compatible with your current HD(s), will expand capacity to as many as 4 of your 500GB HDs, and should be available at a very reasonable price on eBay. I don't know if it would affect an ability to clone back and forth from native to ACARD controller HDs, or how compatible it might be with external HDs or Target Drive Mode.
Or: you could purchase a 2002 Quicksilver (disclosure - my favourite) that would handle larger the HDs natively and probably do a few other things that later G4s do that Sawtooths (Sawteeth-?) don't.
Upgrading older Macs is great fun, but remember 'free' is often expensive so keep a firm hold on your wallet.
    Enjoy... jws

  • The ATA only rings the first call

HelloI've just had instaled an ATA Linksys SPA2102 conecting it to a DSL modem CTC UNION model ATU-R130. The SIP is INPHONEX.COM
My ISP had to redirect some ports to a fixed IP address in order to make the ATA RING.
I make a call to the number assigned to the ATA and it rings ok the first call (many rings but only the first call).
After that I make as many calls as I can, but the ATA doesn't detect that a call is going on. Then I must reset the ata with the factory default values and re-enter all the SIP information in order to get the ATA ringing again. The ATA works fine making calls.  The problem is receiving them.Does somebody know what's wrong?
    Thanks
    Juan

On your next attempt on calling the ATA , try checking the Info page under the Voice tab then look for Hook State, you may want to check first if the ATA disconnected the last call properly. Try checking also if you're using the latest firmware on the unit.

  • Installing Tiger on a new hard drive

I recently intsalled a 300gb hard drive in my computor and I got disk utility to recognize the full capacity by installing Speedtools ATA hi-cap support driver. But when I try to install the OS, it won't let me. So then I tried the option "erase and install" and Tiger installed just fine but now reads the hard drive as 128gb total. I've tried everything I can think of to get around this obstacle, but I'm obviously doing something wrong. please help this is very frustrating.

thanks for your reply, but I don't know if thats the problem. The capacity shows 279.5gb but the available space is only 122.9gb. I know this can't be correct because the only thing I've installed on the hard drive is OSX Tiger. how do I allow the full capacity to be used? I tried patitioning it but that erased OSX.

I have done follow the document with summary step as below :
Create new instance and facility for HDS
Create administrator and data server using ICMdba in HDS server
Add new instance and component management in HDS server via CCE web setup
Enable historical replication data in logger via CCE web setup
Restart all of service in logger
    Please help and advice.
    Thank you
    Roy

i am still not sure, why have you created new instance and facility.
when you want to install HDS, first you enable historical replication in logger.
prepare your server, join to damian and install ICM software.
run icmdba, select the current server choose the already created instance, and facility for central controller and create AW and HDS database.
then go to web setup tool, and under same instance
install component AW-HDS-DDS. why have you created different instance for HDS?
also what does your rpl on HDS server logs shows?
always follow admin and configuration guide.

  • ADI/ATA-2 Hard drive to SCSI 50 pin connector

Hi everyone! a friend gived me a Hard Drive from a PowePC 233 Mhz, it is a ADI/ATA-2 Hard drive and I want to connect it to my LC III that has a SCSI 50 pin hard drive. Is there any adapter to do this? I´v heard there are PC adapters to do this but no idea if you can do it in Mac. In the case its possible, any idea where to buy it?
    Thanks in advance!

For those of us who owned older Power Macs with PCI slots, we'd install an ATA controller PCI card to take advantage of the faster and larger capacity IDE/E-IDE hard drives.  Larger capacity SCSI drives were just too expensive to purchase. With your LC III, your options are limited and there aren't any inexpensive plug-in adapters to convert an IDE drive for use on a SCSI (I or II) bus.  You should try to find a compatible 50-pin SCSI I/II hard drive, perhaps at ebay.  Some years ago, you could find many SCSI drives listed for auction, but the supply dried up and the demand for them disappeared.  During that time, I bought a number of them in different capacities - from 160 MBs to 4 GBs, which went into my assortment of older Macs.  Just so you know, the Quantum 4 GB hard drive was the largest capacity SCSI drive (with that same 50-pin IDC interface) that Apple shipped in its computers.  The last time someone inquired in one of the forums about SCSI hard drives, I decided to check ebay and was surprised to see how few were listed.  The asking prices were probably 4 times more than what I paid for similar drives, years earlier.  Scarcity drove up the price, far beyond the real value of the drives.

  • Boot camp and Windowa 7 (64 bit)

Happy New Year to every one!
My mac is a 2.66 GHz Quad-Core with 8 GB RAM, a nvidia GeForce GT 120 video card and 3 1 GB super ata HDs.
Traditionally, one of the hard disks is dedicated to windows os and its applications. Since I got this mac I installed Vista (ultimate) to the boot camp hard disk. So far Vista worked fine, well, as fine as windows os works.
After all, I make use of vista just for two programmes, that is not possible to find in mac os: Final Draft 8.0 which can be worked in my language (greek) only in pc environment (!!) and microsoft flight simulator X!
Last week I upgraded vista to windows 7 (ultimate again-64 bit). Since I had too many files installed to vista so as to let them get lost I prefered to upgrade from vista to 7, and not to erase the whole boot camp hard disk, by choosing the according facility to windows 7 installation disk.
But first I tried to install Apple Win7 Upgrade Utility, which, by my mistake, I thought it would help. Off curse It didn’ t, giving me always the message that could not be opened.
At my third efford vista was upgraded to windows 7 straight forward. By great surprise everything was saved at its placed. Since then windows 7 os and all windows s/w seem to work properly. Additionally, every time I restarted my mac, when I push the «alt» key to my keyboard mac os provides me the opportunity to choose between mac and windows os disks.
But then I understood that things didn’ t go so fluently, as I initially thought. When I opened system preferences/startup disk I realised that the windows HD icon has disappeared. What does it means? What went wrong? Why I still can see windows and macintosh hard disks when I push the «alt» key, but I cannot choose it in the startup disk utility?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually you don't need an EFI64 ROM to support 8 GBs of RAM. That is determined by the bus size and the memory controller. The ROM only determines the maximum amount of RAM that the OS can address. None of the Macs currently in production can support even the maximum supported by the 32-bit kernel. None have a wide enough memory bus. Of course newer models may support larger amounts of RAM when they are released, but for now there's not much need for using the 64-bit kernel except if you are developing 64-bit software and need to test its compatibility with the 64-bit ROM.

  • Designjet 1050C Plus Compatible EIO Hard disks

Which EIO hard disks are compatible with the Designjet 1050C Plus Plotter?

    Hey guys
THanks for much response. More specifically, it is K7N2G-L.
Here is a quotation from the manual:
Hard disk RAID connectors: IDE3, SER1&SER2(optional)
    Controlled by Promise 20376
The mainboard also provides optional dual high speed Serial ATAinterface ports, SER1&2
Each supports 1st generation serial ATA data ratesof 150 MB/s
Both fully compliant with Serial ATA 1.0 specs
Each SATA connector can connect to one hard disk device
And here is the preceding page on ATA hds:
The mainboard has a 32-bit enhanced PCI IDE and ultra dma controller. that provides PIO mode 0`4, Bus Master and Ultra DMA function.
You can connect up to four hard disk drives, CD-Rom, 120MB Floppy and other devices.
Pls help me understand the above: 4) This means that in total you can connect up to four different devices, hds among them.
So If you have a CD-Rom, only 3 HDs (ata or sata) can be connected, right?
    and one more
    5) Is SATA much better than ATA? If yes, 6) Will it improve performance of WinXP significantly if I install it on SATA?
The other option is to use such an additional sata for wav samples (I make music on sample-based programs).
    7) which one is better sata for windows or sata for samples?

  • Nforce 3 Platninum and 6800GT works fine for a week or so then fails to boot.

    Hi everyone,
I have read pretty much all the posts on the forum, but none show the exact same problem as mine, as far as I can see.
I have an MSI Nforce 3 plat mobo (with latest BIOS), which is turning out to be the worst investment I ever got.
    My specs are as follows:
    2x512MB Kingston ram
    AMD 3.5
    pixelview 6800gt
    raptor HD
    thermaltake 480W PS
I upgraded to the nforce 3 for the 939pin socket for my AMD chip.  I had constant freezing, so my old memory I had to chuck and buy 1GB of Kingston ram.  Using my old ATI 9800pro my system was stable. Absolutely no crashes.  I decide to buy a pixel view 6800GT AGP card to upgrade.  Cool.  Plug it in, reload windows (latest WHQL drivers from NVIDIA).  Everthing is fine, for about a week.  Then bad things start to happen.  The symptoms are:
Turn machine on, BIOS check all ok, machine does DMI listing. As soon as the "starting windows" screen comes up, the video display goes corrupt.  Either white, with diagonal lines, or windows XP logo all over the screen several times and corrupted.  The machine does boot into windows, but the screen is blank or corrupted.  I hear the windows startup sound click in.  Press the power button, shut down the machine.  Reboot.  It usually comes up fine.
I thought initially it was the graphics card, so I swapped it out. Reloaded windows. All works ok for about a week. Then, again same problem.  Windows event viewer shows no errors.
My question is this: can this be fixed or is it hardware incompatibility.  If so, can I fix it tweaking the mobo settings.  I have tried the AGP fast writes, didn't work.  This looks like intrinsic Hardware incompatibility, but if it is this, why does it work for a week without any problems, and then it gets worse and worse and worse.
If this is a hardware problem, what is the cheapest way to get out of this.  Is MSI nforce 4 any better or do I ditch pc gaming all together.  I have been gaming from XT days, and I have to say, I am totally disheartened with this whole mess.  The one thing in my life that I do want control of is a bootable, reliable PC to relax with at the end of the day.  At the moment, I just shed tears as it is turning out to be a costly nightmare.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  My friend has offered to buy the 6800GT from me, and give me my old 9800Pro back.  Should i do this???
    Thanks guys
    John

    Hi Makisst,
    Thanks for the reply.
    System specs are as follows:
    AMD 3500 64
    MSI Neo Platinum (nforce3)
    Creative labs Audigy2 pci card
    Pixelview 6800GT AGP 256MB
    Kingston DDR400 512Mb PC3200 400Mhz x2
    MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM 939 pin  (MS-7025-010)
    Western Digital Raptor™ 74.0Gb 10,000RPM SATA150
    Themaltake 480W power supply.
I have 2 extra ATA HDs, which I have not added to the system to rule those out.
I have a DVD player (bog standard MSI) and a CD burner (not plugged in so as to rule this out).
The only thing I have not tried is removing the sound card (audigy 2).  What is driving me absolutely nuts is that the machine works fine for a week.  Then there is a slow degrade.  First boot, scrambled screen, second boot fine.  Then a few days later, it will only boot the thrid time around.  Then after 2 weeks, it won't boot at all.
I have tried this card in another persons machine (the 6800GT that is), and it boots fine.
I can honestly say I have not tried playing with the BIOS settings except for AGP fast writes, as it was working fine with the Radeon 9800 pro.  I have done two full HD formats, and completely wiped the Raptor twice now.
I shall have a look at the BIOS settings you recommended tonight, and see if they make a difference.  I am, to be 100% honest, a little bit scared of playing with the BIOS settings, as I really don't know what I am doing.  I see that the ppl I bought the machine off have set timings in the BIOS to 3-3-8-3 (I think, I will confirm this tomorrow), so should I leave these settings?
I shall also remove the Audigy 2 card and see what happens.  System properties show machine has no conflicts though.  It is almost like the card is not initialising correctly.  Why this happens only after 1 week though I have no idea.  This is the third time it has started happening after 1 week.
The only extra software loaded is Norton, Win XP SP2 and directX9.  I really have not had it stable enough to start loading extra software.  I am getting too tired after reloading for the third time in 6 weeks.
I will let you know tomorrow either way.
    Many thanks
    John
