Installing 500Gig ata hard drive

Hi,I'm going to install a 500gig ata hard drive to go along with my 250gig ata drive. The 250gig is on a 133 controller card that will support 4 drives. My question is:do i format the drive first or can i just clone the 250 to 500 with super duper.

Hi-
Hard drives add a bit of heat to the interior of the tower, so a PCI slot fan would probably be a wise investment.
Although the PSU would probably be OK, the other upgrades may not appreciate additional heat without additional cooling.
Getting some of the heat out before it all goes through the PSU will help keep the power production steady.
Removing some of the heat from the Radeon and the CPU upgrade with the help of PCI slot fan won't hurt either.
A PCI cooler has minimal amperage requirements, so it should not overburden the power supply.
As compared to earlier drives, late model drives do run cooler.
WD drives are some of the coolest running drives.
One might consider getting some external drives, though. Two internal drives should be plenty for OS, applications and scratch.
Putting files, music, photos, etc. on an external FW drive won't affect performance adversely, and will reduce the heat and power loading of the tower.
Make sure you have an external backup drive that can backup all of your "working" drives.
Another benefit of an external drive housing, is that you can use a SATA drive, up to 2TB capacity now, and connect by FW. This way, you get the benefits of SATA capacity, and don't have to buy a controller card.

  • Newly installed Ultra ATA hard drive not showing up anywhere-HELP!

Just installed (I thought) a 300 GB hard drive on top of my factory installed 40GB. Tried it once as the master and then as the slave. Still, it doesn't show up in disk utility so I can format it. I do not have it set for cable select.
Any help would be appreciated because I couldn't find a similar question in the past posts. Thank you!! ")

I thought it was a Sony but apparently only my CD drive is - I can't tell if it is a WD! Here's are the specs on it... Does that model # tell you anything about it?
    ST340016A:
    Capacity: 38.18 GB
    Model: ST340016A
    Revision: 5.21
    Serial Number: 3HS5SPFX
    Removable Media: No
    Detachable Drive: No
    BSD Name: disk0
    Protocol: ATA
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    OS9 Drivers: Yes
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified
Also, the instructions I have don't tell me how to set up the old HD as master w/slave present. Currently, I have no jumper in the new HD and the old HD has a jumper in the master/single drive spot.
The instructions are more geared to a Windows PC of course. In the troubleshooting section is does talk about having to put a (capacity limiting) jumper on the pins all the way to the right for computers that do not suport high-capacity drives.
Now that I've had some sleep I'm going to get back down there and see if I can't refigure my connector situation.
BTW-yes, I figured out too late that I would not be able to use all of the GB on this drive. This is a learning process for me as I'm a busy mom of 3 boys-I generally figure things out in my "spare" time. Ha, ha! I so love .Mac and the support-what a lifesaver!
I HAD been wondering how difficult it would be to install the controller card. Is that something I can do down the road assuming I actually get my new HD showing up?
    Thanks!

  • How do I install a 3rd Hard drive?

I have a 2000 Quicksilver that already has two hard drives installed. My question is, now that I have purchased a 3rd hard drive, where do I mount it? I see an open space below the CD drive and ZIP drive, but no mounting bracket/sled. Is there a piece of hardware I can buy to mount the drive?

    Hi, widowmaker -
A G4 QuickSilver model, like all earlier G4's, has two built-in ATA controllers, one for each built-in bus. One provides connections for up to two internal hard drives; the other is intended to provide connection for the optical drive and the (optional) Zip drive.
The baseplate has three positions for drives -
The front position, #1, and the middle position, #2, are where factory-installed SCSI drives would be placed.
The rear position, position #3, is where the initial two ATA hard drives mount, using the included sled.
Positions 1 and 2 can also be used for individual ATA drives. The problem in adding a third (and even a fourth) ATA drive is the absence of a controller. The solution is to add a PCI card controller; if it is a single-channel card, it can connect up to two additional drives.
If you get such a card as an ATA/100 or ATA/133, 48-bit LBA compliant card, you can then use ATA (or PATA = Parallel ATA) drives larger than 128GB (the built-in controller on all G4's and the early QS models has a drive size limit of 128GB) - although OS 9 has a volume limit of about 200GB, OSX has no problem using large drives.
However, it may be of advantage to add a SATA PCI card instead; this will allow the use of SATA (Serial ATA) drives, which are becoming more common. The G5 and Intel models use SATA drives; doing this would allow future use of the drives in a newer machine.
Some folk have mounted a third drive above the optical drive, or even performed surgery on the Zip drive space to permit fitting a standard-size hard drive there, using the Zip drive's connection on its ATA cable to connect that third drive.
There are at least two problems with doing that - (1) on some models, that ATA bus is slower than the normal bus used by the hard drives; (2) heat dissipation - the internal airflow path is not intended to include removing heat from a hard drive placed up there, and so it may be necessary to increase the cooling capacity of the machine.

  • Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter

I would like to install a second hard drive in my T61. I saw a thread that advised I can do this by purchasing a "Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter". The thread also had a link where one can be purchased. However, the page displayed by the link said that the product was unavailable. Do I have any other options for installing a second hard drive? Will this adapter become available for purchase in the future? I want to install solaris or Linux on the second drive and boot from it, I assume this is possible. Thanks.

  • Ultra ATA hard drives???

So i have a 120gb Ultra ATA hard drive so i bought a casing to make it an external HD but it would not show up in disk utility or my desktop. So i took a regular ATA HD and it worked fine. my question is does apple not support Ultra ATA or is there somthing else i need to do to get it show up?

What are the manufacturer's recommended jumper settings for the drive when installed in an enclosure?
It should work as long as the drive settings are correct and the enclosure is getting enough juice - either through the ports or a power adapter.

  • Installing a new hard drive on a clamshell

I'm thinking about installing a new hard drive on my clamshell, at least a 40gb. I've researched online and it's a little bit overwhelming seeing all the steps required to take one of these apart and put the new hard drive in. Can anyone out there tell me if it's worth it to put the new one in? Is it something that requires a lot of skill? I basically want to know how hard it is to do this.
Also, I was wondering if there was anywhere I could send it to install the hard drive for me. And if so, how much it might cost. Thanks.
    -Aaron

The hardware limitation is 128GB to be correct.
The amount of space you can really use when the drive is partioned is about 111GB for a 120GB HD.
If a 160GB hard drive is installed, the Clamshell will only use 128GB, the rest remains unused. If you want to use the full capacity, only a workaround helps.
Place the hard drive in an external enclosure, connect it to a newer G4 Mac and partition it via disc utility. Your partitions can be up to 127.99 GB max. The second partition of a so-called 160GB hard disk (you will never get what you see) would add up to 21 GB.
Then put the drive in your clamshell and install your favorite operating system (Jaguar, Panther or Tiger) The speed tools ATA Hi-Capacity driver for 24.95 $
    http://www.speedtools2.com/ATA6.html
is a DMG and the second partion will be accessible in a minute. The drawback: There are some limitations in using OS9 (only Classic mode possible) and harddisc tools.
I have installed a 160GB HD in a Clamshell which i use as a music box, so every GB matters.
You can buy 250GB HDs, but i havn't tried that by now.

I bought an HP Pavilion 500 - 319na desktop in summer and want to install a 2nd hard drive. There are spare connections on the board and the power cable to the internal hard drive has a spare connection. From what I read it needs to be SATA 3. I have read conflicting advice on this board.  Some say yes, some say no.
OK, there seems to be only one bay (a poor oversight by HP) but provided I find a way of securing another drive is there any reason why it should not work.
From what I read it should be max 2Tb's.
I want a definitive answer please!
    Win 8.1 64 bit.
This is the hard drive I plan to buy.  The spec says XP, Vista, Win 7, but am I right in thinking it should work with win 8.1

  • I had to install a new hard drive because my old hard drives boot files became corrupted, and i want to get all of my music files off the old hard drive and regain all my play counts/ratings/playlists

    Greetings everyone
as the title says, ive had to install a new hard drive  and i want to transfer my old itunes library onto the new drive, maintaining all playlists/play counts/ratings etc, album artwork if possible. The old hard drive is installed as a slave drive and is completely acessible, but due to the boot files being corrupted i cannot use it as the main drive and therefore operate my old itunes. Also, my ipod no longer contains my music library as itunes synced without my permission and wiped it.
The only thing i have tried is copying all of my old music files from the old drive by selecting 'add folder to library' and then the old drive, then replacing the new itunes library.itl file with the one from my old itunes. This restores all my playlists and playcounts but when i try to play any of the songs it says that the files could not be found, and i dont fancy locating  8500 music files individually!
Thankyou for taking the time to read my post, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ah, my reply was based on the assumption that you had a default installation of iTunes.
i.e you had all your music in the iTunes media folder inside your iTunes folder.
If your iTunes folder is so small compared to the amount of music you have, you must have a different arrangement.
    This complicates you situation considerably.
iTunes can cope with moving around as long as all the music is in the iTunes media folder, not not if it isn't.
Your first step should be to get iTunes working on the old drive. This will involve editing the xml library file so that the drive letter is correct and then rebuilding the library from the xml file.
Then you will need to consolidate your library which moves everything into the iTunes media fodler. After that you will be able to use my first suggestion.
    Step 1
Find the iTunes folder on the old drive and copy the two library files somewhere else so you can find them again. That's iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml.
Now open the copy of iTunes Library.xml with WordPad.
    Look for lines starting:
    Location
These contain the paths to tracks.
You will need to use a find/replace to change the drive letter so that it is correct.
Make sure that you include enough in the "find" so that you only change the right thing.
Maybe /c:/ and replace with /d:/ or whatever.
After that, tell iTunes to use the library on the old drive with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the old drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
    Then use the method in the following article to rebuild your library;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
Unfortunately the date added will be today for all tracks.
If iTunes works correctly after this, consolidate your library
    File>>Library>>Organize>>consolidate
This copies all tracks into to iTunes media folder and could create a problem if you do not have disk space so don't do it if you are unsure about free disk space.
Check that iTunes works OK and then use the first method.

  • How do i install a new hard drive using time machine

    Hi there
I have purchased a new 1TB hard drive for my Mac book pro (late 2008) model. I have time machine installaed on a seperate hard drive connected with an airport base station. I do not have the orginal snow leapoard/mountain lion OS CD or DVD. Can someone please tell me the exact steps to install the new hard drive .
    Thanks

You haven't inserted your new hard drive yet?.
    There's two ways
    1. install yourself
    2. or pay someone to install it for you.
If you want to do it yourself go to google and type in "install new hard drive for macbook pro". sometimes it makes a difference what model your macbook which is why i won't provide you a link just in case its the wrong one.
    Its very easy.
    1. remove all screws and the lid.
    2. remove screws from the black bracket which is holding your hard drive in place.
    3. unplug your hard drive.
    4. VERY IMPORTANT (A MISTAKE I MADE). make sure that you remove the external screws from your original hard drive as these screws are the one thing that hold and stabilise your hard drive and stop movement from happening.
    5. insert these external screws to your new hard drive (there are four screws)
    6. insert and plug your new hard drive.
    7. screw the black bracket in firmly
    8. attach lid and insert all screws firmly.

  • Cannot find a mounting to install a second hard drive in my Qosmio x70-A

I have looked all over the internet and have gotten no where in my search for a mounting for the secondary hard drive bay in my laptop.  Anybody know where I can get one?
Also I've included pictures of the secondary drive bay and the primary bay.  From the looks of it I can't use the same type of mounting in the secondary bay as in the primary.

I have the same issue, and have found Toshiba support to be completely unacceptable on this.
After getting bumped around from sales to tech to sales because "we don't answer that question, you have to talk to the other guy", I finally got a "straight" answer from sales:
"Sir, we DO NOT sell that part, and therefore I CANNOT tell you a part or model number for the part you may need to install that second hard drive. The only thing you can do is talk to our parts supplier over at National Parts (1 800 524 8338) and ask them to provide you with the model numer or sell you the part."
At this point, I was annoyed, but thought that at least with a straight answer I could proceed.
After a very short hold time with National Parts, a very kind associate answered the phone and listened to my tale of woe. Unfortunately, she was unable to help and said:
"Unfortunately, sir, I have listed that while there is no caddy for the second hard drive slot on you X70-A specific model, there is supposed to be a mounting bracket. Unfortunately, we have been trying for MONTHS to have Toshiba give us the part number, spec, or any other information other than 'mounting bracket', and therefore I'm afraid we have neither a part to sell you nor a part number for you to go looking for one".
At this point annoyance is full-blown anger. How is it possible for Toshiba to make something that should be SO SIMPLE so VERY VERY VERY complicated and impossible.
"Sorry, if you didn't want to spring for the dual drives when you bought it, you're hosed forever sucker." Does not seem like an excellent customer service strategy.
This was the FIRST Toshiba I'd ever decided to spend my hard-earned money on, and now it's a machine I can't upgrade because they can't get their act together with their parts supplier or in-house over a 3 dollar bracket?
    UNACCEPTABLE.
The pictures the original poster shows are exactly what I have, no need to add more o fthe same.
    ANY help, Toshiba?

Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro?  From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended.  But how/where?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance
