Installing Standard or Datacener?

My apologies if this question has been asked/answered before.
We are licensed for 2 Windows 2012 Datacenter.  I am running in a virtual environment.  What are the licensing specifics on running Datacenter in this environment?  How may physical CPUs does it cover?  From what I read, the license covers
unlimited VMs.  Which version should I actually be installing on each vm, Standard or Datacenter?  Do the CALs cover all of the VMs installed on a host?
Thank you.
Jeff G

Hi,
Thanks for posting.
Firstly for any licensing questions you are always best refereeing to a licensing specialist or software vendor as Microsoft have a tendency of changing their requirements / regulations and these people are the generally in the know.
Datacentre licences are generally covered per CPU and generally 1 licence covers two CPU's. So if you have one server with two CPU you need 1 data centre licence. If you have 2 servers, each with 4 processors you would need 4 licences etc.
Datacentre does give you unlimited virtualisation rights - so you can run as many instances of Windows Server as you choose. These can be standard edition or datacentre edition.
As for your CALS you need to have a CAL for every user or device accessing the server. This isn't per virtual server instance though, the CAL entitles the user or device to connect to windows server. So one CAL per user / device.
I hope this helps clear some of your questions up.
Thanks
Denis

• Can NOT install Standard ONE on a 2 quad-core processor machine (licensing)

This is from Oracle's licensing (July 2009):
===================================
“When licensing Oracle programs with Standard Edition One or Standard Edition in the product name, a processor is counted equivalent to a socket. However, in the case of multi-chip modules, each chip in the multi-chip module is counted as one occupied socket.”
This is also from Oracle's licensing (July 2009):
=====================================
“Oracle Database Standard Edition can only be licensed on servers that have a maximum capacity of 4 sockets. Oracle Standard Edition One may only be licensed on servers that have a maximum capacity of 2 sockets.”
Now, this is what it seems to be:
===========================
1 quad-core AMD/Intel Xeon chip counts as 4x0.5=2 sockets (reached the maximum capacity limit in the licensing terms) by simply using 1 (single) quad-core CPU box.
and that's it - you can NOT install Standard Edition ONE on a 2 quad-core CPU Linux box :(((((
For a AMD/Intel multi-core Linux boxes
===============================
it can be a single quad-core CPU box (4x0.5=2 sockets -- but, paying twice the processor license - because it is now 2 sockets) or
it can be a 2 dual-core CPU (2X2x0.5=2 sockets -- but, paying twice the processor license) or
it can be a single dual-core CPU box (2x0.5=1 -- paying only a single processor license)
I think it is time for Oracle to revisit the licensing terms for Standard ONE edition and change it to simple socket count (don't count the cores). It is getting more expensive to use Oracle Standard ONE.

Sales can not rewrite the OLSA. However, Sales can request changes or addendums to the specific contract, which are reviewed by Oracle Legal and approved by Sales senior management (right up to Charles and Larry if needed).
That said, very few Oracle employees are allowed to discuss any aspect of licensing terms. The official first point of contact is Sales, and they may only be the carrier pigeon of missives from the authority.
When someone buys Oracle, OLSA is the only legally binding document. Everybody should keep the copy of the OLSA which is in effect at the time of their purchase, given that OLSA can be modified at a later date from the actual purchase.That happens to be true of any license or sales agreement, from Oracle or not. Also note that if you purchase support, renewals may affect the original OLSA.
And it's one of the reasons old timers in these forums (such as Dan and myself) will prefix nearly any license discussion in the forums with "check with sales" and suffix it with "and anything you hear on the internet is probably useless in a court of law when you get audited".
and after all that - thanks for digging into the details and posting them.

By the way - what you write is a change of policy. At one time, a box that could support 4 CPU but only had 2 CPU installed would not qualify for SE1. Good news indeed.

• Error while installing Standard BI Content- Datasource not maintained

Hi,
While installing Standard BI Content, namely MultiProviders within Cost Center Accounting, I am getting the following error:
DataSource 0DBDUNSIMPORT_ATTR not maintained_
I am collecting the MP with Grouping-in Dataflow below for installation. The installation ends in error. However within InfoProviders tab the MP's are shown active. Is the above mentioned error going to have any advese impact during data load ? What is the procedure to get it rectified ?
Regards,
Amogh

Hi,
When you collect objects during installating business content, the system will collect all the datasources pertaining to the main object. Once the collection is done, system will display all the datasources which are not activated below. Check if you need all those datasources for your modelling. Usually for data sources for attributes and texts will end up in RED. You can just ignore and continue to install if you dont require in your development.
In our implementation we dont use DUNNING, so we just ignored and installed. Installation was successful, But sometimes you will get warnings which you need to check.
thanks

Instead of downloading just+ the Apex XE installation,
is this the correct way, for a personal pc, to install Standard [free] 11gR2 with SqlDeveloper and Apex 4.1

Pl identify exact version of Win 7 - you will need Professional or higher - Home version is not supported - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24186/reqs.htm#BABIICFE

• Constant crackling/pop + inability to install standard drivers + audio loss

Oh Lord, what a disaster Creative is. I have a Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatalty Pro that worked fine under Windows XP for four straight years. Then on the fifth year when I upgraded to the Windows 7 x64 Beta it ceased to function. It never continued to work with the Release Candidate, RTM or Retail versions so I just gave up until a few days ago when I thought maybe Creative or the community fixed some of my issues...
Hah, fat chance. Anyways it all began with severe audio distortions, pops and crackling that would sometimes end in a flat-line tone or eternal static. No matter how many times I reinstalled my drivers, used older drivers or used user remedies nothing worked. So I just gave up, took out my sound card and sucked it up with my Realtek integrated motherboard audio (eugh).
Well I can't stand it anymore. I'm too much of an audiophile to settle for anything less so I tried my sound card out again. I still had the same problems only now I can barely install any Creative drivers as the installation will constantly ask about a file called layout.bin. but it does not work at all and there are no other responses on the issue.
But that's OK because I can still install the base X-Fi drivers. Unfortunately it never resolved my issue. Older drivers do not work. There's nothing other than crackling and popping and then an utter loss of audio. Then I heard about Daniel_K and used his drivers (X-Fi Prelude Beta and X-Fi Support Pack 2.0). I was elated when everything installed without a single issue and the audio was perfect... until after maybe an hour when the crackling came back. Then it started getting progressi'vely worse until you can't even decipher what's being heard. I tried a couple reinstalls which would fix the issue for a short spell but then it'd degrade exponentially from there.
On top of that I couldn't use any of the Creative software with either Creative's drivers or Daniel_K's. It would never detect my sound card even though Windows had no problem seeing it. So I spent literally 5 hours of my day prowling these forums, Google and my own experiments with no luck.
So rather than looking for a solution I'm just gonna ask for one. I have an EVGA 680i motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3GHz, ATI Radeon HD 5850, 6GB RAM, Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatalty Pro and .5TB HDD space.
I know Creative stated that nForce motherboards might have an issue with the X-Fi but I've never had that problem with XP and I heard it's found in many other boards from different manufacturers. Creative also stated problems with more than 4GB of RAM but I've disabled all but 3.5GB of RAM with no success. I know Creative states that this is a PCI issue and that I should mess around with my BIOS settings. Updating my BIOS, disabling unneeded BIOS features, changing PCI slots and getting rid of my overclocks did nothing.
I KNOW that it's not a defecti've card. Everything works 00% with Ubuntu 9.0. Thanks for your time. I'm probably just wishing for gold to pour from the heavens and wasting my time. =(

ORe: Constant crackling/pop + inability to install standard drivers + audio loss? Alright, don't ask me how but I managed to mostly fix my crackling and popping issue. I fixed it with a combination of rearranging all of my hardware to different slots and reinstalling my drivers for the th time, only this time mashing Daniel_K's drivers with Creative's.
Now getting the drivers to work is another thing. I have sound and it's superb (the only reason why I'm willing to sacrifice so much of my time to get this to work) but I cannot get any other function out of my X-Fi. I can't open up the console, switch modes, enable effects, etc. Also, if I ATTEMPT to screw around with any audio settings my computer will start crackling like the devil and all of my hard work will be undone, prompting another reinstall requiring the utter removal of anything Creative on my PC to work.
Now I think the reason for this is because whenever I try to install any Creative software from Creative themselves (except the driver) it won't install. It will ask about a layout.bin, I would point the installation to where layout.bin is but then it'd give me an error (Error I-00). According to my install.log I'm missing something called CTShared. I try installing it but it doesn't seem to fix my problem.
Also, installing ALchemy will tell me that it couldn't create a shortcut after installation and will not work. Sometimes the installation will say that there is a newer version of a product and that it won't install even though there is no trace of anything Creative on my computer.
Now Daniel_K's drivers and software install fine, but the software WILL NOT detect my sound card. It will constantly tell me that the audio device wasn't found or that it's not installed. Windows sees it fine, though, and I get perfect audio. So I mashed Daniel_K's drivers with Creative (long process) and everything installs fine, everything looks to run fine but for some reason nothing will start up. So so much for my own modding attempts. >_<
Any solutions?

• Installing Standard Edition wih RAC

Hi@all,
actually I'm trying to install Oracle Database Standard Edition 12c (12.1.0.2) with RAC Option on a two nodes Cluster. Both machines are running on Oracle Linux 7 and Oracle Clusterware / GI 12c (12.1.0.2) is also installed. What makes me confused is, that I can't select the Standard Edition. But why? I think, RAC Option is also available in Standard Edition. And no, I didn't select Rac One Node Option, I know, that is just for Enterprise Edition.
Thanks a lot and regards,
Dave

OK, thanks a lot for your answers, here are mine to that:
- we've just 2 CPU's in each node of the Cluster
- On the page Oracle Database Software Downloads | Oracle Technology Network | Oracle I just get the Enterprise Edition for 12.1.0.2. I think, the Standard Edition will be available on OTN or so for 12.1.0.2? Are the Editions now splitted with the installers for 12.1.0.2?
- Which Options should I've select on the before screens which will exclude the Standard Edition? The first screens before that where you can decide over the Editions are: The Support Screen => I've entered no mail address, "Installation Option" => Install database software only, "Grid Installation Options" => Oracle Real Application Clusters database installation, "Select List of Nodes" => I've selected my two nodes, Language ?=> english. And that's all. Which of these options would exclude Standard Edition?
Thanks a lot and Regards,
Dave

• How to install Standard Edition One?

I downloaded 10g (10.2.0.1) for Linux x86 and it says it contains Enterprise, Standard and Standard Edition One inside. Once I started installation I had option to install Enterprise or Standard, no option for Standard Edition One.
Did I miss something?

Standard Edition One IS the STandard Edition with an added moral obligation to not out it on a machine with more than 2 sockets.
Just use the SE install

• Installing Standard Edition One

Hi,
I was asked to test SE1 in order to see if it fits certain requirement. In order to do so I choose one of my RH 4.0 boxes and downloaded the database for the Linux 64 bits. Then I began installing.
However, when I was asked to choose the Installation Type I only had 3 options:
Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition and Personalize.
My questions:
1- Where are the Standard Edition One and the Personal Edition options?
2- Is it possible that the Standard Edition One is the same installation as the Standard Edition and the only difference is certain hardware constraint (as seen @ the license documentation)?
Any help will be appreciated.
Best regards.

Unfortunately, patches can cause that to change.
See Metalink Note:219233.1
You're correct, they can do that, but on the more
recent versions, if you're really careful in
following the patch instructions they typically
don't.
Though in all fairness 10.2.0.1 => 10.2.0.2 is a more recent version (see bug 5100038).
This sort of thing repeatedly happens sadly with Oracle and SE. Oh and the fix noted in 219233.1 doesn't apply to windows either.
So, to the OP, there isn't any really nice way of determining that you are running SE or SE1, you are looking for an absence of the word Enterprise - and that might be wrong because of a bug. I don't believe Express Edition identifies itself nicely either, but you can tell you are running that because it installs properly using appropriate installation media (windows installer or an rpm).

• Install Standard Ed. One

I''ve downloaded the 32 bit windows evaluation version of 10g in order to try out Standard Ed. One (whith the title of the download indicated was in the package). On beginning the install, there are options for Enterprise, Standard and Personal, but not Std ed one - is the install for this on the download? What did I do wrong?

It is OK, when you download from this site, you download the full featured CD. It includes all different RDBMS version, Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition and Standard Edition One. Features between SE and SE1 are the same. The difference between standard edition and standard edition One is that this last does not include the RAC, Clusterware and Automatic Workload Management.
So, installing a regular SE and not installing RAC + ... is considered a SE1, which can be supported by your license agreement.
You may check the Oracle Database Licensing Information document for further details.

• Installing standard Unix software

I'm not sure I know the right question to ask...maybe someone can help me. What I'm eventually trying to do is to work with a Perl-based system on my Mac (Mac Snow Leopard); I need the Apache2 Perl .pm files available. They seem to be in /System/Library/Perl/Extras/5.10.0/darwin...but although this is in my path, referencing the packages as Apache2::Request (for example) does not work because of the path names of the library.
I've tried installing Apache from source, and make install appears to get confused by the fact that there's already an Apache installation that ships with the OS.
I'm sure there are lots of things I just don't understand here. Can someone point me at a resource that explains how the Apple versions of Unix software interact with potentially newly-installed versions (or explain it to me)? How much trouble can I get myself into by installing packages (Apache is the example above, but there are/may be others) that ship also with Mac OS? Should I be starting by re-installing Perl from scratch, changing my Perl include path, and pretending all the Apple software just doesn't exist? Should I just go buy a Linux box?
Thanks.

rm50 wrote:
First, the Apache2::Request library is still (not surprisingly) not findable by Perl, since it doesn't live in my standard INC. That seems odd (it lives in /System/Library/Perl/Extras/5.10.0/darwin-thread-multi-2level/DBI/Gofer). Is there something going on, or should I just make sure my @INC points there?
It doesn't live there. It isn't installed at all. I had to install it via:
sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'shell'
install Apache2::Request
At some point, it stopped and asked me if I wanted to run the tests. The first time I accepted the default and the tests failed. Then I did the install again and it quickly got back to the point of asking about the tests. This time, I told it to skip the tests. Those CPAN tests often fail due to very specific configurations required.
Then I added a new script to test this module:
use Apache2::Request;
$req = Apache2::Request->new($r);
@foo = $req->param("foo");
$bar = $req->args("bar");
$req->content_type("text/html");
$req->print("Bar is $bar
It failed. After a little Googling it appears you need a specific module to support this. That module seems to be there already, so I added it to /etc/apache2/httpd.conf.
LoadModule apreq_module libexec/apache2/mod_apreq2.so
Restarted Apache and it worked this time. Moving on...
Also, when I tried to install XML::LibXSLT, the perl makefile complains that I only have version 1.69 of LibXML, not 1.70. Can I safely install the 1.70 LibXML.pm on top of the 1.69 that lives in my system area, or should I put it somewhere in my INC path before the system version? What would you suggest?
Actually, that was just a warning. I let CPAN run and I now have LibXML. CPAN appears to put things into /Library/Perl. That seems like a logical place. On MacOS X, while there is a /usr directory, there is also a MacOSX equivalent /System. The same goes for /usr/local. Things that you might expect to go into /usr/local might sometimes be in /Library. I guess it depends on how "Mac-friendly" a particular package might be. Many are too difficult to reconfigure and are better left to /usr or /usr/local. I haven't tested XSLT or XML because I don't have any XSL files handy on this machine. But I don't expect it to have problems.
Keep in mind that if you intend to deploy anything on a different system (such as a shared hosting provider), that other system must have the same modules. The big web hosting companies usually have all the bells and whistles, but you never know. You usually cannot install Apache modules or make most system configuration changes on a shared provider.
You can install CPAN modules anywhere you want and tell Perl about the new library path. I normally do that rather than just letting CPAN do it all, but this is a throwaway 10.6 install on this machine so I don't care. I like to keep my Perl projects as self-contained as possible. I don't think that is really possible with mod_perl though.

• Trial expired, want to install standard

I purchased the CD but the program will not install. The message said that an program already exists but my trial for Adobe pro has already expired.
Should I uninstall the trial? how do I do this

You cannot have both Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Standard installed at the same time, so if Acrobat Pro is installed you must uninstall it. (The trial is just Acrobat Pro, and it doesn't go away just because the trial runs out, because you could be about to buy it - and hence license the installed software). On Windows, uninstall the usual way with the programs control panel. On Mac, there is an uninstall app in the Acrobat app folder.

Please do the following:
- Try running administration server with the log-level 'finest'.
- Then do the same action that gave raise to the error that you are facing.
- After that look in to .../admin-server/logs/errors to see the error.
- Copy paste that error here.
BTW, have you enabled Dr.Watson? Check in Event viewer to see if the process crashed. Dr.Watson output would be useful too.

My computer initially started with a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter but now its gone and some applications won't run properly. How can I fix this?

Hi,
The Computer indeed can't work properly without VGA Graphics Adapter. Did you remove it manually or it gone accidently?
If you did it, get it back.
If not, like arnavsharma said, check its status from Device Manager. And then try right-click on the 'Standard VGA' adapter and select 'Update driver' from the list.

My bad. You're right!
That comes from trying to answer a question when you're not fully awake. What I said was true in the early days of the Suite, forgot that they changed that. Sorry.

Try running a search in OTN forums with "HACMP" keyword. The resulting pages might prove helpful.
Also, googling with "HACMP Oracle" results in a good number of results. Since you are looking for non-RAC setup, you will need to scroll through the results.
