Installing windows on macbook pro without bootcamp. Will this allow for switchable graphics?
Hi everyone, I was thinking of buying a new Macbook Pro Retina 15 Inch with the discrete nvidia graphics card inbuilt with it.
I love windows and I am planning on running windows 7/8 on the macbook pro as my primary OS (because of advantages of gaming and being familarized with windows os), however I have heard the issue of running windows on bootcamp severally drains battery life as apple does not allow you to switch the nvidia graphics to the integrated graphics. Is this true? I have heard that running windows 7/8 on bootcamp allows for only around 3:30 hours of battery life, whilst OSX allows for 8+ since it uses the integrated graphics primarily when not running GPU demanding applications.
I am wondering if you can install windows 7 without bootcamp which will wipe apple OS from the laptop completely. Will this allow for the laptop to do switable graphics without problems allowing the laptop to save much needed battery life?
Thanks in advance.
Michael
Sorry it seems to have taken so long for you to get an answer on this question!
Your last post was mostly right... It IS a bad idea to go that route!
While it's technically POSSIBLE to get Windows in place without OSX, it's a MAJOR technical hassle and you need to jump through several hoops to get to that point.
In addition to the hassle required, having an OSX partition can be incredibly useful at times - I've had my Windows system break several times in the past where the automated (and even manual) startup-repair process failed to get Windows booting again, but a short boot into OSX later, I have the problem resolved (via OSX) and am able to get back into Windows.
Finally, you need to be aware that the graphics card situation isn't because of the presence of OSX. Just because you get rid of MacOS doesn't mean you suddenly will be able to use either graphics card! The limitation comes into play with the hardware drivers necessary to get all your hardware working in Windows - they just don't have the facility to switch graphics cards built into them.
I'm afraid you're stuck with the NVidia card when using Windows, one way or another!
Bootcamp is a prerequisite BTW. Without it you won't be able to get Windows installed at all (at least not without MAJOR stumbling block, again!), and again, the graphics card limitation isn't due to OSX or Bootcamp.
Also, battery life... Yes. You'll have significantly less in Windows, and this isn't entirely because of the graphics card situation either. MacOS is just built so well, with the limited hardware used by Apple in mind, that power-management when using OSX os significantly better! The legendary battery life of Apple systems is actually primarily due to the operating system, not the batteries themselves!
As a helpful indication: On my 2009 17" MBP I get about 7 hours on the integrated chip in OSX (8 is pusing it, but is possible sometimes); about 5 hours in OSX when using the NVidia; and about 3 and a half when I'm in Windows.
Hope this all helps you. If you have any further questions feel free!
Apologies for the scattered approach to answering your posts - it's LATE where I am and I"m kinda rushing through things... :-)

Installing Windows on Macbook Pro, NO BOOTCAMP
I have a 15 inch core 2 duo Macbook Pro and I went to restore my computer to tiger once again and when I did I relised that the disk is too scratched up, I can only get about 90 percent of the minimal installation done.
After a while of trying diffrent things i got fet up and partitioned my hard drive to Master boot record and poped in my Win7 install disk, I installed Windows 7 perfectly with no problems but now when I go to boot it up all I get is a grey screen and after a while a folder icon pops up with a question mark on it.
How can I fix this without using another mac or bootcamp, because I DON'T have access to one and i DON'T have access to another mac cd, so don't give me that option, lol.. The only thing I have access to is another windows 7 computer.
Please help, I thought mac was suppose to be one of the top brand computers. especially with the price of them, but so far I've had more trouble with this mac than what I did with my HP, I had my HP 3 years now and my macbook not even a year.
Thanks,Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Select the Windows disk icon and click on the arrow button.
Where did you get the Windows installer from? Your HP? That's an OEM disc that cannot be used except on your HP. You need a retail Windows disc if you want to boot the Mac exclusively with Windows. Of course you will not have any of the hardware drivers for Windows for use on the Mac hardware.
I don't understand your complaints about a computer you don't seem to know how to use, your installer discs are all scratched up and no longer usable, but you have had lots of trouble with it. And, all your doing is trying to use it as a Windows computer. Defies logic. -
hi i downloaded windows on my macbook pro without bootcamp and it deleted the mac portion of my laptop and i downloaded os x but my laptop started off with os x lion and i want os x lion back on my laptop what do i do now?

I'm confused. Are you saying that your mac came with an older version of OS X, but you want to be able to use OS X Lion, which you downloaded from the App store? If this is not the case, what do you mean by "I downloaded os x but my laptop started off with os x lion and i want os x lion back"? Specifically, what do you mean by "I downloaded OS X" if your mac came with Lion? -
Installing XP on Macbook pro in bootcamp ~updates first?
For installing XP on Macbook pro in bootcamp what updates should I have installed first? I have already installed parallels with XP and all is well but I have one PC program that will not run on parallels and needs to be setup in a Bootcamp environment. I want to run the same version of XP in bootcamp - I hope.
If anyone has experence in partitioning the HD without compromising the Parallels OS setup and the MAC OS please advise, or where I can find instruction for doing this. Thank you.
LindaThanks- that what I was hoping. I wanted to run Windows XP- do you recommend a specific partition size? I have found information that is a bit conflicting about installing the same copy of Windows as was is installed on my Parallels. Some information states that it will wipe out my XP in Parallels if I try to install the same CD in Bootcamp, then there is information about work around's - and running Bootcamp inside of Parallels? Yikes!
I have been told by the software manufacturer I need bootcamp to run 'Pool Studio' on a MAC- that I can't use Parallels- do you have any idea if running the bootcamp Virtural Machine inside of Parallels would act the same as a separate version of windows. Except possible eleveate the licence issue.
Its ****** to have to buy another windows licience to run one program.
Do you have any ideas? Thanks -
Installing windows on MacBook Pro
I am looking into installing Windows on my Pro because I need Visual Studio for programming and just need some questions answered.
1. Is there a Mac native alternative to Visual Studio? I am using it for a Visual basic class I am taking and we are creating windows applications.
2. Can I buy an external hard drive to run Windows OS from? I opted for the ~256gb SSD MacBook Pro and am not wanting to waste storage space on Windows OS, especially since I do not foresee using it after this class.
3. If I cannot run Windows from an external hard drive: How easy is Windows installation, as well as how easy is it to remove Windows OS when I am finished using Visual Studio? Are there risks to my MacBook accompanied with Windows installation?1, No
2, No, Microsoft doesn't allow that
3, Read http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1583/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.7.pdf -
I am trying to use the "App Store" on my Macbook Pro but it will not allow me to open the program. It automatically says, "App Store has closed unexpectedly." Whenever I tell it to reopen, the exact same messege pops up. My computer has all of the latest updates from Apple.
I tried deleting the program then running the software update to try to get the program again but it did not work. Where can I manual download the actual app store program, or fix the one that I have.
Thanks in advance.

Windows 7 install on late 2011 MacBook Pro without bootcamp (performance issues)
Hey guys I'm hoping I can get this issue resolved. I have purchased a late 2011 MacBook Pro (radeon 6750m 1gig). I installed a fresh copy of windows 7 without bootcamp. Having real issues with game performance like world of Warcraft. I have done this with an older unibody Mac and it ran great (for any non believer)... But now this time around I'm getting horrible fps in game. I'm thinking it may be driver related it buy I am having trouble finding the right drivers to see if that's then issue. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

That is completely false. There is no real need to leave OS X on the Mac if you don't want to, especially with Win 7 or 8. That may of been true with Windows XP but not anymore.
The problem with leaving OS X installed is then you are really limited with what you can do with the drive. You can only have one Windows partition and if you fool with it at all Windows will no longer boot. you can't even change the OS X partition otherwise Windows would boot
Windows 7 will install all by itself. No need for any Boot loaders or Hack Boot system. Pop the Win 7 DVD in the DVD drive and restart. Windows will be installed all by itself. But you do need the Apple support files.
In the end if you are going to run Windows on a computer by itself then you really should not buy a Mac. The hardware is the same and as to the OPs perceived better built quality I personally do not see it. And if you actually read some of the posts on this and other Mac forums you will see that perceived build quality is just a bunch of hype, in my opinion.
To the OP. You aren't missing anything.
If you had carefully read what I wrote, I merely said that doing the install on a blank drive wasn't a good idea. That's because it can create issues the OP is having. A Mac's hardware is no different than a comparable Windows machine, but the EFI/BIOS/Firmware is. Macs are in something of a no-man's land in this regard, as they have neither an old-school BIOS or modern UEFI of recent Windows-based notebooks. I'm willing to bet that the performance problems the OP is having relates to the fact that a straight EFI install on a modern MBP "enables" (for lack of a better word) automatic graphic switching. The capability manifests, but the functionality is not there. Enterprising individuals have been trying to get graphic switching in Windows to work as it does on the OS X side ever since MacBooks debuted with this abliity but with zero success.
Using Boot Camp bypasses this, as the discreet GPU is enabled full-time in Windows. Thus, you will realize proper performance.
As far as perceived build quality, Apple machines are at the high end of the consumer notebook spectrum. They're certainly better than most of the other machines you can pick up at your local Best Buy, but they fall short of business-class machines such as the Dell Latitude/Precision, HP ProBook/EliteBook, and Lenovo ThinkPad. -
How to Install Windows 8.1 Pro with Bootcamp
I have an early 2011 MBP 15" that's running Mavericks, and I just got Windows 8.1 Pro with an install disc. I'd like to install W8 with Bootcamp, but I can't seem to find any guides on doing this, as most people have retina MBPs which have no optical drive (bad design choice, IMO), so they utilize a flash drive. How would I go about doing this properly?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
With a disc it's much easier to install Windows 8.1 on your MacBook, because the steps are the same as for any other Windows version.
Boot Camp Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities) will guide you through the first steps. Then, follow Apple's steps to install Windows 8.1 > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf -
EXTREME lag after installing Windows 8.1 pro via / Bootcamp assistant
Hey guys, today I've literally been through **** trying to get this game working on my MacBook Pro.
I've basically gone out & bought Windows 8, created a partition on my hardrive (of my MacBook Pro) & installed it into that partition using Apples 'Bootcamp assistant'. After installing the operating system I also loaded the drivers which were given to me by Apples 'Bootcamp assistant'.
I now have the game on the Windows 8 (on my MacBook) which is a £2000 machine... I have got to the menu & experienced extreme lag to the point where I've even managed to turn down all my video settings & it is still lagging a lot despite my high-end computer hardware - here is my computer http://store.apple.c...B/A&step=config#
I have tried running the game on this website http://www.systemrequirementslab.com & everything is great but it says I don't have the required 512MB of video RAM... It says I have 256MB. This is complete ********? I believe I have 2GB of GDDR5 video RAM. It also says that my graphics card is called 'Microsoft Basic Display Adapter'. So I believe this is where the issue lies. My theory is for some reason one of the drivers which I have installed which was given to me by the Bootcamp assistant is messing with me.
This is literally all the information I can possibly provide, does anybody know how I could fix this?
Thanks you!If the underlying hardware was exposed correctly by the CSM-BIOS when Windows was installed, your Device Manager should look like this.
If the Windows installer did not see any devices as your screen indicates, Windows will use generic software-based drivers which will be very slow and painful.
Rudegar ... I think the Windows installer did not see any hardware, otherwise there should be HW with yellow triangles with exclamation marks. -

Creat MBR partition without bootcamp or another to install windows in GPT guid without bootcamp
hello i have more than one partition on my macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch and its impossible to me to make it one partition for some reasons one of them that the partition sys is the second any way i tried to creart partition EXFAT and tried to install win7 but it says that can't be installed in GPT guid i talked chat with apple more than one 9 times to find answer but it's useless i hope to help me here
The TechRecipe article is old. Some of the commands still apply, but it is a very custom solution.
Yes, there is a way to create a custom hybrid MBR to accommodate additional partitions.
1. This is a very fragile arrangement, and any Apple Software upgrade can break it.
2. Any Hybrid MBR changes require this process to be repeated every time it breaks, which you should be willing to undertake.
3. If you want to do this, and maintain it, please post the output of the following commands from OS X Terminal?
diskutil list
diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
4. Sudo command require your password, which is not echoed back to you. You may also see a warning about improper use of sudo and potential data loss.
5. Can you describe what exactly are you trying to establish?
6. You previous attempt with exFAT failed, because your Mac requires a Hybrid MBR which maps the GPT to a MBR using a one-to-one mapping.
7. If you just want to run OS X and Windows, and do not want to run any custom disk partitions, you should use Bootcamp Assistant. If it is failing, it can be addressed. -
Installing windows on Macbook Air without using Superdrive
I'm ready to switch from PC to MBA but there is a problem. I thought that I would be able to install windows to MBA through the remote disc feature. But I read in the apple's support page that I'll need to have the superdrive to install windows on MBA.
Is there a way to install windows without the need of a superdrive?
And if not, is there a possibility that the remote disc feature will allow the install of windows in MBA in the near future?
Thank you for reading my question!Wondering if anyone can advise me on where I'm going wrong..
I've tried to install Windows XP Professional with service pack 2 (original disk) on my Macbook Air, with SuperDrive, but keep on getting this message after the first part of the installation is complete: "Disk error, Press any key to restart" (pressed any key but wouldn't do anything).
Here is what I have tried:
1. Opened Boot Camp and split the partition in half (even tried 32GB)
2. After this process is complete, Boot Camp asks to insert the Windows CD, did this and pressed OK.
3. The system rebooted in Windows Installer
4. Asks where I want to install Windows, I selected C:/ (BOOT CAMP) FAT32
5. Copies all of the Windows setup files
6. Then tells you the system will restart after 20 or so seconds, and if you want to restart press ENTER
7. The system restarts, but in Mac OSX. I've then tried the whole process again, and when it restarts I hold down the Option key.
8. A boot menu appears giving 3 options: 1. Mac OS, 2. Windows, 3. Windows CD
9. I select Windows CD (also have tried Windows)
10. Blank screen appears and says: Press any key to boot from CD....
11. I dont press anything then the message appears: "Disk error, Press any key to restart"
Can anyone help me to solve this please?
Thanks in advance. -
