Instant client 10.2 / Oracle home 8.1.7 coexistence

Hi, I've searched the forum and other web sites for this info and not found a concise answer, so sorry if I've just missed it.
I support an application that uses 10g as back end, and want to distribute instant client 10.2 ODBC driver for Windows with it. It turns out that some users have 8.1.7 ODBC driver already installed - including the environment variable TNS_ADMIN which references the location of the tnsnames.ora file the may be used by the driver.
Now, if I install the instant client driver to my preferred default location, create my own tnsnames.ora file, and modify TNS_ADMIN to point to this new location, my driver works fine. I don't know what it is doing to the 8.1.7 driver, however, and unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding what it is actually used for and thus cannot test it.
When I place my tnsnames.ora file in the same directory as that of the 8.1.7 driver and merge the files, my new entries don't seem to be recognized. My hope is that the 8.1.7 driver really does not need the TNS_NAMES variable because it has all of the necessary information written to the registry - which appears to be the case.
So, 1) can I safely point TNS_NAMES to my file and not mess up the 8.1.7 driver? 2) If not, how can I make the two drivers coexist short of manually swapping the value of TNS_NAMES when I want to switch between drivers.
Thanks in advance any help you can provide.

The culprit turned out to be an sqlnet.ora file that set the default_domain to "world". Once I changed my file to append ".world" to all of my alias names, it works fine. Instant client doesn't require the sqlnet.ora file, but it can use it. Unfortunately, I have found other applications on some user systems that use different default domains. I've modified my installation script to parse the sqlnet.ora file (if it exists) and append the correct domain to my alias names, but that isn't going to help me when one of these applications is installed after mine and an sqlnet.ora file is created or stepped on after the fact. Any ideas on getting around this problem?
On a related note, what is the value of the default domain anyway? What would happen to the other applications if I simply delete the sqlnet.ora file and modify their tnsnames.ora entries to have no suffix? I certainly don't want to do this if it will have a negative impact, but if it is really not necessary for our local network configuration, maybe it isn't really necessary.

  • Difference between instant client and full oracle client

    Everyone,
I had read the below lines from a goldengate pdf. Someone please explain me what is the difference between instant client and full oracle client?
What is the use of XDK libraries.?
" The full Oracle client must be used with GoldenGate so that the GoldenGate programs
have access to the Oracle XDK libraries. Do not use Oracle Instant Client, which lacks
those libraries. You can download the full client from Oracle’s website."
    Regards,
    SAKTHi

    The dealio is this:
When you install client software, you have several options as to the degree of what you get/install. The big chicken dinner is administrator, so you get all kinds of extra features, add-ons, libraries, utilities, etc. At the hard candy Christmas end is instant client, and that has just enough functionality to, as you may surmise by now, connect a client and that's about it. Various libraries have functionality built in to do whatever extra is required. An example is FAN, or fast application notification, used in Data Guard failover. A FAN API (Java) will detect a failover and re-direct a client connection to the new primary. What GG uses XDK for (specifically) isn't of importance to a user, just the fact that it is available for connecting to Oracle is.

  • Instant client support for oracle rac ?

My questions is does instant client support rac ?
    example : tnsnames.ora
    RAC =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = DB1-VIP)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = DB2-VIP)(PORT = 1521))
    (LOAD_BALANCE = yes)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = RAC)
    (FAILOVER_MODE =
    (TYPE = SELECT)
    (METHOD = BASIC)
    (RETRIES = 180)
    (DELAY = 5)
    )

If you are asking if Instant Client can connect to a RAC cluster, the answer is yes. There is no functional difference between a full client and Instant Client. I hope that helps!

  • Oracle Instant Client & Oracle 9i Client Co-existence

I am having problems installing Instant client with existing Oracle 9i client. Some of our users have Oracle 9i client already installed. In this case, I need to do the following to make it work.
    1. Add the Instantcclient dir path
    2. Remove oracle_home from registry
    3. SET NLG_LANG and TNS_ADMIN env variables.
The main issue we are facing is with TNS_ADMIN. When you set this variable to Instantcclient dir , then both Oracle 9i and InstantClient 10g started using the tnsnames.ora in instant client dir. This is not acceptable , as some of the might intend to use Oracle 9i network/admin/tnsnames.ora file when they use Oracle 9i ODBC driver.
Can you please tell me how to install/configure Instant client 10g with an existing Oracle 9i client. Also, can you send me the ODBC Connection string thats doesn't use tnsnames.ora.
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thanks

Metalink note 90419.1 describes how to connect to a database without using tnsnames.ora. eg
    sqlplus system/manager@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(Host=tiger5.com)(Port=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=V815)))
I cannot use this method when creating an ODBC DSN. I tried the Oracle9i ODBC driver, the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle but not the Oracle10g instant client ODBC driver. I suspect that the long string exceeds the ODBC specification.
I have had some success using a MS-DOS Batch File to launch an application that required the Oracle7 client long after it had been removed from the registry. This could work for the Oracle10 Instant Client
REM set up the environment variables
REM these are local to this application
    set ORACLE_HOME=%CD%\oracle7client
    set TNS_ADMIN=%ORACLE_HOME%\NETWORK\ADMIN
    SET ORA_NLS32=%ORACLE_HOME%\NLSRTL32\DATA
    set NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
    set API=%ORACLE_HOME%\DBS
    path=%ORACLE_HOME%\BIN;%PATH%
    REM run the application

  • Instant client with Oracle 8i server

I am pretty new to Oracle.
I just installed instant client on my xp workstation, and set up all the variable. I am trying to connect to a Oracle 8i server.
Can instant client connect to Oracle 8i?
    Thank you!

Although the 10.1.0.3 instant client for windows doesn't appear to be "officially out", if I try to download
http://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/instantclient/instantclient-basic-win32-10.1.0.3.zip and similar files, the files do exist.
Unfortunately this version still can't connect to my corporate Oracle database:
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.6.0.0, 64 bit - Production
    With the Partitioning option
    JServer Release 8.1.6.0.0 - Production
Oh well, back to a full client install of Oracle 9i.
Perhaps the official release when its documented on the Instant Client download page will work.

  • CVE-2013-3751 and Instant Client 11.2.0.3

The README for the July 2013 Database GI Patch Set Update mentions Instant Client Installations needing Database PSU 11.2.0.3.7 to address CVE-2013-3751. Further details on the CVE at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/cpujuly2013verbose-1899830.html#DB say “Successful attack of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized Operating System takeover including arbitrary code execution. “  The Patch README references the Oracle Call Interface Programmer’s Guide and in there I found this relevant section http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e10646/oci01int.htm#autoId37
That document spells out the steps required create Instant Client zip or RPM files.  That’s great, but here at my company we haven’t gone through these steps in the past.  We simply go to the appropriate page on oracle.com ( Instant Client Downloads ) and download what we need.
I’m assuming the vulnerable file is in the “basic” package.  I looked at linux x64 zip today and it has not been updated.
    unzip -l instantclient-basic-linux.x64-11.2.0.3.0.zip

    I have 2 questions.
Q1. If I apply only the database server home patch, will my database server still be vulnerable to takeover if the unpatched Oracle Instant Client from oracle.com is left out on my various app servers?
Q2. Is there any effort planned at Oracle to replace the vulnerable versions of Instant Client posted on oracle.com with updated versions no longer vulnerable?

I opened a Service Request with My Oracle Support.  Here is the response.
    Q1 answer:Yes.
Q2 answer: yes, ETA is next patchset release Q3CY2013

  • Where can I download the instant client ODBC driver for windows 7

I upgrade to windows 7 and my instant client connecting to oracle from ms Access stop working. Is there any documentation on how it works on windows 7. I use instant client and odbc cleint for xp.

  • Is my PHP + Oracle9i + Instant client setup ok ?

    Hello
I have to developp a script in PHP for windows, using an Oracle 9i database.
    Here's my setup :
Windows 2003 Server R2 (all patches applied)
    PHP 5.2.0
    Oracle 9i 9.2.0.1.1
    Instant client 10g 10.2.0.2-20060508
    Oracle9i was installed in C:\oracle\
Oracle Instant client extracted to C:\dev\oracle\instantclient_10_2
Here 's the PATH env variable (only oracle partis shown):
    C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.3.1\bin;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.1.8\bin;C:\dev\php5.2;C:\dev\oracle\instantclient_10_2
I deleted the "C:\oracle\ora92\bin" from PATH env variable in order to
the Instant client to be used instead of. Is this a good solution ? Since now I have no more oracle tools available in command line without specifing full path.
PHP is configured to use php_oci8.dll of course. No problem with that.
I tryied to activate PDO but get an error message :
When I run PHP from command line, same error message :
Warning: PHP Startup: Invalid library (maybe not a PHP library)
'php_pdo_oci8.dll' in Unknown on line 0
Maybe it's a bug in PHP, I m not the first complaining about that as far as I know.
My main question remains : Is my configuration the best way to do ? Is there a way not to loose oracle9/bin from PATH ?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks, now I understand better.
    What is "Oracle Runtime"?
Did you install Instant Client from the Oracle Client CD or did you download Instant Client from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html ?
Which version of Instant Client is this?
Can you show us the contents of your tnsnames.ora file?

  • I'm trying to distribute a DB Application using the Instant Client provided

    Hi!!
I'm trying to distribute a DB Application using the Instant Client provided by Oracle.
I've checked the FAQ of Oracle and says the Instant Client supports all existant versions of Oracle.
But I've also seen in another posting that the oci.dll needs the same Oracle version file it was created with.
I need to distribute an application that provides all the 8i, 9i and 10g versions.
Do I have to distribute the oci.dll for each version?
I just wanted to check if this was true.
One more question, when I uncompress the Instant Client, many files appear from which
I only left oci.dll, oraocci11.dll and oraociei11.dll and erased them all, but the program
    still works. Is it ok?
    thanx

I am not sure what you mean if you say that you "need to distribute an application that provides all the 8i, 9i and 10g versions".
If you mean that you want your application to be able to access Oracle Databases of versions 8, 9 and 10, then you can use Instant Client 10.2.0.4 which is able to connect to all of them.
If your application does not need more than the three DLLs you mention to run, that should be fine.

  • Php 5.1.2 doesn't seem to recognize the --with-oci8-instant-client option

I just tried configuring php 5.1.2 with the --with-oci8-instant-client option and could never get phpinfo() to show the oci8 section...
Finally went back and tried php 5.1.1 and it worked.
If anyone else could verify this behavior, maybe the PHP folks should be notified??

    Discovered the issue:
the configure script changed the format of the config option
    in php 5.1.1:
--with-oci8[=DIR] Include Oracle (OCI8) support using an ORACLE_HOME
install. The default DIR is ORACLE_HOME
    --with-oci8-instant-client[=DIR]
    Include Oracle (OCI8) support using
Oracle Instant Client. DIR is the directory with the
Instant Client libraries. On Linux it will default to
    /usr/lib/oracle/<most_recent_version>/client/lib
Other platforms will need to have it explicitly specified
    HOWEVER, in php 5.1.2:
    --with-oci8[=DIR] Include Oracle (OCI8) support.
    The default DIR is ORACLE_HOME.
    Use --with-oci8=instantclient,/path/to/oic/lib
to use Oracle Instant Client installation
This explains why the --with-oci8-instant-client option is ignored.  The new format is:
    --with-oci8=instantclient,/path/to/libs

  • Instant Client With MS VS-2005

    Hi all,
does anyone have an idea how to install Oracle Instant client to work with MS Visual Studio 2005 on client machines.
I am working on a VB application using Oracle 10gR2 database. Should I install Full Oracle Client on each Client PC , or can I install Instant Client ?
    Thanks

I tested the Oracle Instant Client with a Oracle 9i release 2 server running on Windows with Visual Studio.net 2005 enterprise.
Here are my tips concerning environment variables:
    1. make sure no other oracle directory is in your PATH
    2. set your PATH to point to your instant client
    3. set your TNS_ADMIN to point to where you tnsnames.ora file is located
    4. set your NLS_LANG
    5. set your ORACLE_HOME to your instant client
For me, I set NLS_LANG to
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/html/A95493_01/gblsupp.htm#634282
I verified this was using the correct client software by using the sqlplus add-on to the instant client.
    For me, I set:
    SET NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252
Note: before you make any changes, back up your Oracle registry key (if exist) and backup the string for any environment variables.
Read the Oracle Instant Client FAQ here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/ic-faq.html

  • Instant-client odbc installation

I am trying to connect to remote database using R .So i downloaded client-basic-nt and instant-client -odbc from oracle .Unzipped both of them in the same folder and then tried to run odbc_install.exe.
It doesn't give me an error but it i feel it just doesn't execute and escapes .First i thought that it did install the client but i cant see any sqlnet.ora files and tnsname.ora file .In fact i cant find oracle/network directory ?can anyone suggest me is there another set of installation i require before this step ?

this is how I installed Instant client:
    1.downloaded oracle client extracted to C:\Oracle Client\
all the files extracted are in the folder as you see here C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2
    2.created a C:\Oracle Client\tnsnames.ora
make sure you have the db connection details you want to connect to in this tns file
    3. set env. variables. (I hope you know how to do this in windows)
    Variable name : TNS_ADMIN Variable value : C:\Oracle Client
    Variable name : LD_LIBRARY_PATH Variable value : C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2
Variable name : Path Variable value : C:\Oracle Client\instantclient_11_2 (include this to already existing variable 'path')
hope this helps. reply back if you have a question.
