Instant client and SQL Developer
Hello,
I would like to know if I can use the Instant Client along with Ora SQL Developer or TOAD?
Thank you.
[url http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/overview/index.html]Oracle SQL Developer comes with client stuff built-in (java based), don't need Instant Client.
About Toad, see toadworld.com. But, yes, Instant Client should do fine.

10G Instant client and import command
Hi all,
Am using the 10G instant client and need to use the import command through this client but cannot find it anywhere. Does the 10G instant client provide this functionality or anyone know of a workaround for this.
All replies much appreciated,
TomThats a pity. I thought I read someplace that you dont lose any client functionality by using the instant client as opposed to using the client cd install. Is it just that the instant client replicates the connection functionality of a normal 300mb client install?

Using TOAD and SQL Developer to compare db objects in schemas in databases
Hi All,
My primary objective was to compare objects in schemas in two different databases and find out the differences,
Execute DDL's in the database where objects are missing and syn schemas in two different databases.
So I need to compare schemas in databases. Which tool would be helpful and will be user friendly to make a comparison of database objects existing in schemas in two different databases.
I'd like to see if I can get a list of pro and cons between Toad and SQL Developer for comparing schemas pros and cons.
Could you please also help me on navigation in SQL Developer to compare schemas.
Connect to Source
Connect to Target
Compare schemas with different object types
Find out differences
Generate DDL's for the missing objects or for the objects in difference report
Run them in missing instace(Source/Target)
Make sure both are in sync.
Thanks AllHi,
Most dba type tools have this kind of functionality - personally i use plsqldeveloper but this is very similar to most other tools on the market. SQL Developer seems to rely on you needing the change management pack licence which you likely dont have and would be quite a large cost to roll out.
I'd compare plsqldeveloper/toad/sqlnavigator etc and maybe the tools from redgate which look pretty good though i haven't used them.

Windows 7, Oracle DB, Instant Client and VBScript
I'm trying to to connect to a Oracle database via vbs on a Windows 7 machine using the instant client. I get an error [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]Ora-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error Code 80004005. Script still works fine in XP using the Microsoft ODBC for oracle. I've setup the system dsn, and added tns_admin option to the system environmental path. Here's the connection line
psconn.Open "DRIVER={Oracle in instantclient_11_2};SERVERNAME=192.168.50.1:1521/PSPRODDB;User Id=user;Password=pass;"
I've tried 32 bit instant client and the 64 bit and get the same messages with both. Any suggestions?12560 means you didnt supply a tnsnames alias, and a database was not found in that home.
Try this:
"DRIVER={Oracle in instantclient_11_2};DBQ=192.168.50.1:1521/PSPRODDB;uid=user;pwd=pass;"
Using Oracle ODBC Driver
Hope it helps,

Installing Oracle Database and SQL Developer
Hi, I was looking for some help/advice in regards to installing an Oracle Database and SQL Developer onto a Windows 7 32bit machine. I have been asked to create a database to store data that I create through reports in Excel so I am required to create a local database but not sure how to go about doing this. Also not sure if I install the Express Edition or Oracle Database 11g R2. If somebody could please advise on how I can get this started or even any links/tutorials that would guide me in how to get this installed with a localhost.
Thanks in advanc.318f20b8-a3d0-4fb4-bb0f-73785250b7d4 wrote:
Thanks guys, I have managed to install Oracle 11gR2 and I have setup a database using the dbca tool and I can connect to my new database. One thing that I have noticed is that when i look into my tables in sql developer i see loads of different tables i.e. def$_, logmnr_, etc and I am not sure why this is as I expected an empty tablespace.
Thanks btw for all your help.
One of the key principles of relational databases is that they use their own facilities to manage themselves. That means the database management system uses the database to manage data about the database using exactly the same facilities (tablespaces, tables, user accounts, procedures, etc) that an application uses to keep data for the application. See "data dictionary" So there is no such thing as a completely empty database.
As said by others, you do NOT want to be creating your own tables under oracle's schemas (users) or in oracle's own tablespaces (esp. SYSTEM and SYSAUX). Create your own user account/schema. Create your own tablespace. Make that tablespace the default for that user. -

Problems installing instant client and ODBC
I am trying to install the instant client and ODBC drivers on an XP machine so I can connect to an OracleXE database via ODBC for an application to use.
I have unzipped the instant client and ODBC drivers to c:\Oracle and added an entry to the PATH statement.
When I attempt to add an ODBC connection I get the error "The Oracle client and network components were not found. The components are supplied by Oracle Corporation and are part of the Oracle version 7.3 or greater client software installation. You will be unable to use this driver until these components have been installed"
Am I missing something in the configuration?
All help appreciated.did you set your ORACLE_HOME=c:\ORACLE and run the odbc_install.exe?

Difference between instant client and full oracle client
Everyone,
I had read the below lines from a goldengate pdf. Someone please explain me what is the difference between instant client and full oracle client?
What is the use of XDK libraries.?
" The full Oracle client must be used with GoldenGate so that the GoldenGate programs
have access to the Oracle XDK libraries. Do not use Oracle Instant Client, which lacks
those libraries. You can download the full client from Oracle’s website."
Regards,
SAKTHiThe dealio is this:
When you install client software, you have several options as to the degree of what you get/install. The big chicken dinner is administrator, so you get all kinds of extra features, add-ons, libraries, utilities, etc. At the hard candy Christmas end is instant client, and that has just enough functionality to, as you may surmise by now, connect a client and that's about it. Various libraries have functionality built in to do whatever extra is required. An example is FAN, or fast application notification, used in Data Guard failover. A FAN API (Java) will detect a failover and re-direct a client connection to the new primary. What GG uses XDK for (specifically) isn't of importance to a user, just the fact that it is available for connecting to Oracle is. -
Where can I find more OBE like the one for Database xE and SQL Developer?
Hi,
I tried to post on the OBE forum but it is expired.
I found the downloadable OBE, or tutorial, very good resources for me to learn Oracle, like the one for XE and SQL developer, which you can download, not just read online, and see as many times as you can, with flash stuffs inside,
Will you make more this kind of OBE?
Where can I find them?
PeterHi Hans,
I know the above address you offered but those are
not downloadble. So do what I do .... CTRL-S (save page)
As an Oracle trainer, I consider the OBEs to be very important. I doubt that Oracle will get rid of them.
However, it takes time to make them. I suspect that they are created when a new feature needs to be demonstrated and the product management has the resources available.
I just wish they would make the original set from Oracle8i available. They provided some very important basics which have long since hit the archive pile.
I'm sure that some of the ACEs would be happy to upgrade them to Oracle10g/11g level. I know I would be willing to contribute to that effort. -
WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DEVELOPER 2000 AND SQL DEVELOPER?
Hello Everyone.I am new to oracle and want to know the difference between developer 2000 and sql developer in oracle.Pls?
Developer 2000 is an application for making webforms that will be served on an Application Server, and accessed by the end users through an applet in their webbrowser.
SQL Developer is a tool for administrating and manipulating data and structure of your database. Like a GUI version of SQL*Plus, not advisable for end users.

Instant Client with SQL Server - HELP!!
G'day all...
My goal is to connect to a server using Oracle Database version 8.1.7.4, from a server which does not have either Oracle Database or the full Oracle Client, preferrably using SQL Server DTS packages.
With that said, I have installed instant client basic and instant client ODBC suppliment on our first development server using the instructions at the following link without any difficulties, although I do admit that I only have a tnsnames.ora file and not a sqlnet.ora file:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/instantclient.html
The trouble is, when I attempt to deploy it on any of our other servers it fails. When I attempt to connect using Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle in a DTS package in SQL Server I get the following error message:
HResult of 0x8004005 (-2147467259) returned Unexpected error occurred. An error result was returned without an error message.
(Note: This is seen on all other servers I've tried this on except for the first one).
I have also tried setting up a System ODBC connection using the Instant Client driver but it returned this error message:
Unable to connect
SQLState=S1000
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified
In desperation I have also tried installing the Oracle RDB Driver and the Oracle 8.1.7.8.1.0 ODBC driver. Both appear to install successfully yet nothing seems to work.
As far as I can tell,l these are the differences between the first server and the other servers:
- First server is MS SQL Server 2000 version: 8.00.760, rest are 8.00.818
- First server is running MS SQL Server Analysis services, rest are not
- First server is MS Windows 2000 Advanced Server, rest are MS Windows 2000 Server
So my first question: Does anyone know if the Instant Client tool works with SQL Server version: 8.00.818?
My second question: Can anyone else suggest something that I haven't tried yet, short of installing the Full Oracle Client on this server? Not that I'm opposed to doing that, it's just that it's a last resort idea as of now...
Please help - need to roll this into production soon...Kent, I see that many others have reported that error (doing
a google search), but I see no ready answers. I saw something that
reminded me of a connection string value that I've seen answer some
problems. May be worth a shot for you: try adding this string to
the connection string (in "advanced options") for your datasource:
AuthenticationMethod=Type2
If it doesn't solve it, remove it. But keep it handy in case
it ever may help with some other problem.
Here's one other possible answer for you:

Issue connecting via proxy client in SQL Developer 4.0
Hi SQL Developers,
I should have posted this earlier, as I have been using SQL Developer 4.0 for several months and noticed the issue some time ago. The environment I am connecting to uses a Windows ISA Proxy desktop client to allow traffic to some databases. I generally use the Oracle Client and OCI connections in SQL Developer. At some point during the SQL Developer releases, connectivity stopped working for certain databases behind the proxy.
The following clients connect to the database behind the proxy without issue:
SQL*Plus 11.2.0.1 64-bit
SQL Developer 4.0.0.12.84 using the SQL*Plus client and OCI
Connectivity to the database behind the proxy does not work with these versions:
SQL Developer 4.0.0.13.80 (tested with Oracle client, thin, etc.)
SQL Developer 4.0.0.13.30 (tested with Oracle client, thin, etc.)
Error Message:
An error was encountered performing the requested operation:
IO Error: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection
Vendor code 17002
Connectivity to other non-proxied databases works for all clients above. I've tried re-creating the connections, re-installing, etc. Nothing works except going back to the earlier version of SQL Developer.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior? I am trying to determine whether the proxy is stopping the client based on a signature or if the client is not routing the connection correctly.
Thanks,
ShadI think I have found a solution.
Run the command prompt (CMD) in windows and type in the following:
setx _JAVA_OPTIONS -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true

This is also not an ODBC or Oracle issue. It seems that isql is using rlwrap or similar - this requires the readline library. And possibly LD_LIBRARY_PATH to be set too. -

What is that unixODBC-2.2.14-linux-x86-32.tar.gz, where did it come from, and why are you doing all that?
unixODBC should be installed after step 5.
I guess that that is the cause of your problem.

Do you notice any improvement after removing the files from that tar.bz file?
