Instant Client Lite Charactet set question

Hello.
I just wanted to ask if Instant Client Lite supports the WE8ISO8859P1 character set.
Some parts of the documentation says It does and others says It does not..... What is the reality??
thanks

I am setting NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1 before calling my OCCI app that uploads a blob to a remote DB.
However - it doesn't work:
ORA-12737 - Instant Client Light - Unsupported Character Set EE8ISO8859P2
On my test DB it works, this is on client's db. So does the setting on the server db matter?
What is the work-around?
thank you!

  • Instant Client SQL*Plus License Question

    Can anyone shed some light on a license question for me? (I know that most license questions are for Oracle Sales to handle, but this involves a supposedly free product.)
    I want to use SQL*Plus with the Instant Client in a production environment, but I am not sure whether I am entitled to. Does Instant Client "support" SQL*Plus only in the sense that if I already own a license for SQL*Plus I can use it with the Instant Client, or is the Instant Client SQL*Plus package also truly free to deploy and use?
    The download page has links to download a basic Instant Client, plus several optional packages, one of which is SQL*Plus. However, the FAQ does not tell me whether the optional packages (specifically SQL*Plus) is also free to deploy and use in a production environment, and I could not find any other helpful document.
    The FAQ says that "Instant Client is FREE for anyone to use in a development or production environment." It also says immediately following that "Instant Client can be used to run your OCI, OCCI, Pro*C, JDBC, and ODBC applications without installing a full Oracle Client. In addition, Instant Client supports SQL*Plus." [emphasis mine]
    I would appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony

    Why don't you call Oracle sales? I guess they'll be happy to answer your question.

  • TNS_ADMIN (path to tnsnames.ora) using Instant Client IGNORED

    Hi,
    I developed a simple utility which uses OCCI LIB from 10g release. I'm deploying it with Oracle Instant Client lite libraries.
    Everything works fine when tnsnames.ora is present in the same dir. When I move it somewhere else and set TNS_ADMIN to that directory, it doesn't work anymore:
    C:\uplob>set TNS_ADMIN=c:\tns;
    C:\uplob>echo %tns_admin%
    c:\tns;
    C:\uplob>uplob u/p@xe 15 input.dat
    Exception:12154 ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specif
    ied
    This seems very simple, but I still cannot determine why TNS_ADMIN is not being taken into account.
    Thank you for any help with this issue,
    david

    I think for Windows ,
    You may have to set this in MY-COMPUTER-->Advanced-Env-Variables
    and reboot to take effect.

  • Install Instant Client

    I have some question want to use.
    Now i installed Oracle 9.i database Server. Then I want to connect to Database Server by Oracle Instant Client. Does Any body can help me?
    - Tell me how to install Instant Client in Window 32 in detail (Now i have instant client for 10,do you have instant client for 9).
    -How to config instant client so you can connect to Database.
    Some body can help me as soon as possible
    Thank in advance.

    NLS_LANG is one of the variables I wrote about.
    What exactly did you do?
    Which Instant Client version did you install? How (RPM, tar.gz, OUI)?
    Instant Client Lite or 'full' Instant Client?
    It is strange that the Oracle 8 Client 'stopped working'.
    How did you test the functionality of the Oracle 8 Client?
    What did you do, what is the exact response?
    Did you change any environment variables or anything else on the system when you installed Instant Client?

  • ODBC Error: Could't find Oracle Instant Client in present directory.

    I am getting the following error when I try to run odbc_install.exe with the Oracle 10g Instant Client Lite version 2:
    Could't find Oracle Instant Client in present directory.
    The 10g Instant Client Lite version (including the missing MFC71.DLL and MSVCR71.DLL files) is in the directory. What am I missing here??

    Can you detail your configuration? What files are in the directories? Environment variables?

  • Oracle instant Client and memory

    Hello everybody,
    I have just installed the Oracle Instant Client on my Linux server (Redhat distibution), I recompiled PHP (4.4.2 version) with the oci8 extensions and I reboot Apache (1.3.34 version)...
    In short, the installation of OIC goes perfectly (No error messages...), and I can request a remote Oracle server from a PHP file. (All this, for one PHP script that I use only once a day, to load data in a MySQL table).
    However, since I installed the OIC, my Apache processes exceeds the 200 MB and my server has a commit memory more than 2GB (sometimes it goes until 5GB).
    Is it a problem that can come from the OIC ? Maybe, a parameter could fix that problem ?
    Thx in advance.
    Maat

    If you can't upgrade from PHP4, you should upgrade at least the OCI8
    extension. All PHP 4 releases have a very, very old version of OCI8.
    Steps to upgrade are given in the free Underground PHP and Oracle Manual
    The Instant Client Basic package uses a chunk of (shareable) memory
    for all its NLS data. The Instant Client Lite package uses a smaller
    footprint.
    Make sure you know what you are measuring and whether what you are
    seeing actually has an effect on performance.

  • Instant Client Basic Lite 10.2.0.1 & VS2005

    Here is the scenario...built a VB2005 thin client app/10g backend with 9i client installed on local machine....works great. Tried app on another machine and app failed due to the app requiring OC 8.1.7 or greater (this machine had OC 8.0.6.2c). Built an MSI installer to install Instant Client Basic Lite 10.2 files and update path and installed on this machine. Problem fixed so I thought. Works great on machine which previously had OC 8.06.2c, however when installing the app and Instant client on a machine which never had an Oracle client, the app fails stating Oracle Client 8.1.7 or greater must be installed.
    What am I missing?
    Paul

    Thanks for the quick reply.
    It is a .NET app which uses the OracleClientAdapter packaged with VS2005. I find it interesting that installing the instant client in combination with OC 8.0.6.2c results in a working App considering 1) The App requires 8.1.7 or above and 2) the info you just provided that it does not yet support .NET.
    To answer your question - on the non-working App on the XP machine that has just the PATH set to Instant Client, ORACLE_HOME is not specified. It's is an end users machine, where it was the first time testing the prototype App.
    Do you think setting ORACLE_HOME=x:\instantclient has a chance of making the instant client work on this machine? I will try this out tomorrow as the end user is in town and has offered their machine for a couple of hours.
    The only significant differences that are obvious to me between my XP machine using instant client successfully and the non- working machine is the following:
    Installed on My Machine
    ===========================
    1. OC 8.0.8.2c is previously installed
    2. ORACLE_HOME is set
    3. TNSNAMES - which doesn't seem to matter - i tested renaming the file to another name and instant client still works
    3. Merant Oracle ODBC drivers
    Looks like I may be forced to install the full Oracle Client on machines running this App. I'll tryi setting ORACLE_HOME on the non-working machine tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Can ODBC set by Instant Client be used in MS SQL linked Server?

    Hi:
    I want to know if a ODBC set by Instant Client can be used to set a linked server in MS SQL.
    I follow the install instruction about Instant Client.
    I create a ODBC setting and the connection tested successful.
    I also build it in DTS package in MS SQL and the data transfer process can be run correctly.
    But when I tried to build a linked server from MS SQL to oracle, it always returned the error message
    System1 Setting:
    MS Win 2003 + MS SQL 2000 + Instant Client 10.1.0.4
    System2 Setting:
    MS Win 2000 + Oracle 9.2
    Any opinion or suggestion is appreciated.

  • SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME with instant client and sqlplus

    On an hp-ux 32 ,,,
    - i downloaded instant client from here http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/hpsoft.html
    - installed and set my shlib_path to directory where I extracted it.
    - running sqlplus comes up with this ...

    SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory.
    - what the heck am i missing here?
    Thank you.

    you can see from the 'tusc' ouput below that it is clearly trying to locate msb files. These files are not packaged with the instant client. So how it this supposed to ever work? These files are simply missing from the distribution.

  • Oracle Instant Client question?

    I installed Oracle Instant Client 11.2 on a desktop with Win 7. Then I created a System DSN using MS ODBC Data Source Administrator (selected the Instant Client driver). The TNS Service Name is set to one of our databases on a separate server.
    1) Instead of having the tnsnames.ora file reside on the desktop. Is it possible to configure Instant Client to use a tnsnames.ora file on a different server? I'm trying have it so that when I create the System DSN, the TNS Service Name drop down box displays all the aliases listed in the remote server's tnsnames.ora file. Is this possible?
    I tried creating a new environment variable on the desktop named TNS_ADMIN. Setting the value to a mapped drive that I created. The map drive points to the directory location of the remote servers tnsnames.ora file (O:\network\admin).
    Your help is appreciated.

    If you want to avoid having to customize tnsnames.ora files on every client and use a centralized approach instead,
    you should use "directory naming".
    See http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/network.112/e10836/concepts.htm#sthref144
    While using a tnsnames.ora file on a CIFS share is not something I would do for a production system,
    it should work. What problems do you encounter?

  • Problem new instant client 10.2.0.3 basic lite win32

    I use the instant client 10.2.0.2 on a w2k/IIS5 machine with no problems at all.
    I used "instantclient-basiclite-win32-10.2.0.2-20060508.zip", followed the instructions and it works fine. I use in an ASP page a connection string to use with OLE DB (Provider=MSDAORA; etc. etc)
    On a second machine i downloaded a newer version 10.2.0.3. (instantclient-basiclite-win32-10.2.0.3-20061115.zip)
    As described i followed the same instructions but it would not work. When i use the older on on the new machine it works perfect.
    Back to the new version, i got this error:
    Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle
    2147467259
    Oracle client and networking components were not found. etc. etc.
    I came to the following:
    In the ORACLE_HOME folder (in my situation: C:\Oracle\instantclient_10_2)
    I have added the following files to the Bin folder, i got those files from the 10g client cd.
    \Bin
    oracore10.dll
    oranls10.dll
    oraunls10.dll
    orauts.dll
    After that i got a new error:
    "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle
    Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-01019"
    Then i added the foloowing files to ORACLE_HOME:
    \rdbms\mesg
    oraus.msb
    The error became clearer:
    "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle
    ORA-01019: unable to allocate memory in the user side"
    I added more:
    \oracore\zoneinfo
    timezlrg.dat
    timezone.dat
    Finally i got it to work. I don't know why the instant client is behaving like this. The 10.2.0.2 version cannot be downloaded anymore.
    Has someone experienced the same problem? I just want to work with the package as it was downloaded from Oracle, i doubt it was intended to add files from different version. I learned with filemon,regmon and depends from sysinternals that de instantclient looks for other files that arent in de instant client package. Probaly it does not need al the file to work. I have read that when using the file: \rdbms\mesg\oraus.msb can lead to serious performance problems, as it looks for the file many times when quering. I guess this file is only for explenation of errors.
    This file can be left out, it work without it.
    I hope someone can help me.

    For what it is worth, I am having a similar problem with an application I support. When I upgraded from 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.3 to fix a performance problem, we now have this connection problem. If I can not get a good solution for the InstantClient I will have to start using the Full 10.2.0.3 Client and I am not looking forward to deploying that.

  • Windows 7 64 Bit machine with Instant Client and 32Bit application

    Hello everybody,
    the last days a tried to get a 32Bit application to run on a Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit machine ... unfortunately with no success. The application runs on XP Pro and Vista Pro 32 Bit machines against a 11g RDBMS for years. As a refenence we use SQLTools from sqltools.net. It has nearly the same behaviour like the application, because it is a 32 bit application too.
    First thing was to install a 64 bit environement to verify if the connection is allright.
    - Downloaded instantclient-basic-windows.x64-11.2.0.2.0.zip an instantclient-sqlplus-windows.x64-11.2.0.2.0.zip
    - Unpacked both packages into C:\oracle so that they reside in C:\oracle\instantclient_11_2
    - Made a directory C:\oracle\tnsnames with tnsnames.ora in it, because the app uses it
    - Set the environement variables TNS_ADMIN to point to C:\oracle\tnsnames and added C:\oracle\instantclient_11_2 in front of the path variable
    - Restarted the machine
    - Opened a commnd shell and startet sqlplus user/password@sid
    Everything was allright, I was able to connect to the database as expected
    Second thing was to start SQLTools, but as I feard it quitted with an error message when trying to access oci.dll of the instant client.
    So i decided to switch to a 32 bit environement as a third thing.
    - Downloaded instantclient-basiclite-nt-11.2.0.2.0.zip and instantclient-sqlplus-nt-11.2.0.2.0.zip
    - Deleted the old C:\oracle\instantclient_11_2
    - Unpacked both 32 bit packages into C:\oracle so that they reside in C:\oracle\instantclient_11_2
    - Didn't change anything in the environement, because nothing changed from the view of the system
    - Opened a commnd shell and startet sqlplus user/password@sid
    But now I wasn't able to connect and got the following error
    ORA-28547: connection to server failed, probable Oracle Net admin error
    SQLPlus was able to start now, but when trying to connect to the database I got the same error like when connecting with sqlplus.
    Does anybopdy have an idea how to manage to get a 32 bit application to run on a Windows 7 64 Bit machine?
    Thanks in advance
    My packages:
    Windows 7 64 bit SP1
    Oracle Instant Client basic lite 11.2.0.2.0
    SQLPlus 1.5 22D

    Have you tried WOW64 ? I have not used this emulator for sqlplus but it works for other 32 bit applications.

  • Orai18n-mapping.jar in Instant Client, but not in JDBC Driver

    Hello,
    i searched about my question, but no answer. :(
    I downloaded the complete JDBC Driver packages (*ojdbc5.jar* + ojdbc6.jar + orai18n.jar) for Oracle 11g at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc_111060.html
    I downloaded the Basic + JDBC supplement packages of Instant Client of Oracle 11g at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/winsoft.html
    There is a mismatch of files between 2 ways of getting the jdbc drivers. In the Instant Client version via JDBC-Supplement, the orai18n-mapping.jar is present, but not in the JDBC way.
    Why is the orai18n-mapping.jar present in one way, and not the other? Is it an error? It's all about 11g version of oracle....
    Thanks

    Well, in my understanding, Instant client and JDBC drivers are completely different products: JDBC driver is a full-featured set of packages required to run JDBC-compatible program, i.e. it's enough to run a program in any supported Oracle environment. On the other hand, Instant client is a lightweight version, which does not include several JARs and some of them are present in different form, but it's enough for most JDBC-programs. See: orai18n.jar is a required package for correct Oracle object's VARCHARs attributes handling. It contains locale files for different languages. In orai18n-mapping.jar, there's no many of them, but I suppose it would be enough for the same task (probably they do not store locales in that JAR version, but rather build them on the fly if needed with help of DB - but I don't know for sure).

  • Attempting to Run 'Instant Client' via XCode on Mac OS X (v10.4.6)

    Environment: OS X (10.4.6) on G4.
    The Setup:
    I used 'Oracle Instant Client Installer' {http://www.kyngchaos.com/} to install the necessary Oracle libraries here:
    [Users/oracle]ls /usr/local/oracle/lib
    libclntsh.10.1.dylib* libclntsh.so@ libnnz10.dylib@ libocci.dylib.10.1@ libocijdbc.dylib@
    libclntsh.dylib@ libnnz.10.dylib* libocci.10.1.dylib* libociei.dylib* libocijdbc10.dylib@
    libclntsh.dylib.10.1@ libnnz.dylib@ libocci.dylib@ libocijdbc.10.dylib*
    I've read that LD_LIBRARY_PATH is rather "archaic" for the Mac OS X vs a directory of dylibs accessable directly from XCode.
    2) I set the XCode 2.2.1 Library search Path as:
    USER_HEADER_SEARCH_PATHS = /usr/local/oracle/sdk/include
    LIBRARY_SEARCH_PATHS = /usr/local/oracle/lib
    ==============
    So my questions are:
    1) How do I find the available APIs?
    I've looked at an on-line example but don't know what I'm doing.
    I saw some source-code demo on-line so I essentially cut/pasted the following code.
    The following is what I've done within the NSApp's Delegate method:
    #include "/usr/local/oracle/sdk/include/oci.h"

    char errbuf[100];

         if (self) {
              rc = OCIInitialize((ub4) OCI_DEFAULT, (dvoid *)0, // Initialize OCI

              (dvoid * (*)(dvoid *, dvoid *, size_t))0,

              // Initialize environment
              rc = OCIEnvInit( (OCIEnv **) &p_env, OCI_DEFAULT, (size_t) 0, (dvoid **) 0 );

         return self;

  • Instant client installation unavailable in ODBC data sources

    I'm trying to install instant client to enable MS Excel to access an Oracle database. OS is Windows 7.
    After installing instant client plus the odbc package, I can't see a new entry in the odbc data sources - only the standard Microsoft sources (Excel, Access, SQL Server) show up.
    There's also an Oracle SQL developer installation on my computer. Connection to the database works fine in SQL developer - so the DB does exist and it is accessible.
    Steps conducted during instant client installation:
    - Downloaded basic lite instant client (11.2.0.3.0) for windows.x64
    - Downloaded odbc package for windows.x64
    - unpacked zip file to instantclient directory
    - executed the odbc_install.exe in the instantclient directory. I'm not sure if this install.exe does anything at all. There was no error message but also no confirmation or reaction of any kind.
    - executing the install file from the cmd window gave me a message, that the odbc drivers were already installed. So I guess odbc_install.exe was executed properly
    - setting some system variables
         1) path variable: added instantclient directory to the ones already listed in path
         2) tns_admin: new entry, pointing to instantclient directory
         3) ld_library_path: new entry, pointing to instantclient directory
    - wrote an tnsnames.ora file using the connect information also used in SQL developer
    - saved tnsnames.ora file in instantclient directory
    - rebooted computer to activate changes
    When opening the odbc data source administration, I'm only able to see Microsoft drivers for Access, Excel, SQL Server. I'd expect to get an Oracle driver option to add to the installed drivers.
    Wild & uneducated guesses about what might cause the problem:
    - IC is installed on E: drive. Maybe some component is expected to be saved on C: (low likelihood, many others would have complained by now)
    - Win 7 often asks for explicit permission to do this or that via popup windows. Maybe the odbc-component encounters such a request ans says "Ummm....???"
    Any idea, what I might try to get an oracle entry in the odbc data source list?
    Best regards
    Peter

    I'm not sure to be honest, but what I downloaded did not have a setup.exe.
    Does what you're talking about allow you to connect to Oracle databases via ODBC? If so, is it downloadble from the Oracle site?
