Intel sees Netinstall but G5 does not

I'm having an issue where I can Netinstall an image from any intel mac, but I just get a flashing globe when I try to do the same from a G5 (or any other PPC). Netboot is being served by an Xserve running server version 10.5.
I am getting some funky stuff in my logs, but I haven't been able to determine if they pertain to this particular problem:

Any thoughts or ideas to help point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Say that you have both of your enet adapters plugged into and configured for the same subnet. Not good. One netboot server per subnet.
It also tells you that you have a bad router address in your config(s) somewhere. Need to fix that.
Try entering the following text on your PPC machines:
nvram default-bootp-vexts="%00"
in a Terminal.app session and then rebooting.

  • RAID BIOS sees HDD but XP does not

I have a K7T266Pro2-RU (MSI 6380) mobo with an 80 GB Maxtor HDD on IDE3 and a 250 GB WD on IDE4, using the latest FastTrak100 RAID drivers from the promise website. On IDE 1 and 2 I have 3 optical drives installed.
The problem is that while the RAID bios detects the HDD's just fine (as two separate Stripe 1+0 arrays) and boots fine off IDE3, XP does not see the other array and therefore the larger HDD is invisible. Of course I have SP1 installed with the LBA support, and when I try the HDD on one of the primary IDE channels it is recognised just fine by XP.
So one might think that the problem lies with the RAID driver.....except to throw another spanner in the works, I did have this working fine on the RAID controller, until I decided to re-install XP from scratch on the smaller HDD (larger HDD is full of data). But for some reason this fresh install will not recognise the second HDD on the RAID controller... whats killing me is that it did work beforehand, and now it wont. I cant think what I have missed to make this work....
    Any ideas appreciated please

You really had it working before? Weird - it's not supposed to work! The Promise controller supports either 0 or 1. I can't see how you got 0+1.
And how can the second (bigger) HDD be the "other array" if you've got mirroring in there somewhere? OK, you can maybe fool a single drive into thinking it's a striped array but no way a mirror is anything other than a second drive which is part of the SAME array as the first drive.
It looks like you have successfully created a mirrored array using the 2 drives (RAID 1). There's no way you have a striped array accross the 2 drives since they have to be the same size for that to work. Mirroring is OK with drives of different sizes. The trouble is, the extra space on the larger drive is just wasted - the total array space is limited to the size of the smaller drive.
Since the second drive is just a mirror and the extra space is always unusable, it's no surprise you can't see it in XP. You would never want to read or write specifically to the mirror.

  • SATA DVD BIOS sees it but XP does not

I hope I have the forum right, Motherboard markings are: MS-6743 Ver 1.1
I think this makes it an 865GM2/865PEM2 but much of the text in this forum talks about changes in BIOS settings that I do not see.
Problem: I have a SATA Plextor DVD drive that I can't get XP to see. The BIOS detects it Ok which seems to imply the cables must be connected Ok. In XP though, there is no sign of either the drive or any mention of SATA in device manager / disk controllers. Nothing in disk manager either.
    PC is Pentium 4 3.2Ghz hyper-threading, 1GB DDR, 52x IDE CD, 2 IDE HDDs.
Does my SATA support oprical and how do I get XP to see what the BIOS is seeing?

Thanks for the quick response. The Native mode part is set in the BIOS. The ther settings I do not see. Does this mean I should upgrade the BIOS? If so, any chance somebody could point me at the correct latest version for my board?
The boot-up sequence is so fast, I don't know how to see my current Bios version?
Its an optical DVD drive I'm trying to get working via SATA, booting is not a problem - its just that XP does not see my new DVD drive via SATA.

  • Computer sees monitor-but monitor does not see computer.

I have a MacBookPro with the older 29 pin DVI out.
I own an 8.4" HD monitor for video production and want to use it for editing.
I am trying to get my Marshall V-R84DP-HD monitor to see the computer and it does not recognize it.
    I have Mac OS X Version 10.5.6.
Connection is a single link DVI-D male-male cable.
I have set the computer to every listed resolution and it does see the Marshall in 1024x768.

I'm still not sure if what you have is typical. You have a "TV" icon in the menu bar - is it the "displays" icon"? Is there a drop down menu when you click on it? Are not the first 2 items in the drop down menu "Detect Displays" and "Turn on Mirroring" followed by a list of the 2 displays and a subset of their resolution options?
If not, you may have some other configuration I am not aware of. "Detect displays" is supposed to search out displays if you reconfigure them. Mirror or span is selected from the drop down menu, or by going to System Prefs/displays/, then you may need to click on "gather windows" to get the display windows, which normally show up in each respective display, to all show up in the primary display (with the menu bar). Then find the Arrangement tab, and there is a check box for mirroring. Trying to switch between span/mirror can be helpful in troubleshooting.
I'm wondering, though, if you have some weird DVI issue. It may pay to just get the SVGA adapter and try that, rather than waste too much time on an obscure issue.

  • Computer sees iPod, but iTunes does not!

Even the Genius Bar guy couldn't fix this:
    - Everything used to work fine with my 5G iPod and Lenovo T61 laptop w/XP
-Suddenly, iPod won't sync with computer anymore
    - Did all the "5R" stuff, so now I have an iPod with nothing on it, but iTunes still won't see it.
    - I know the COMPUTER and OS are seeing it, since the iPod shows up in the Device Manager, and all the Windows stuff shows the iPod is attached
    - Sometimes I get the "Restore" pop-up, but no more.
    - Deleted and re-installed a fresh copy of iTunes
    - If I connect the iPod to another computer it syncs, but NOT "it's own" laptop.
HELP! This thing is useless and I am out of options that, again, even the Genuis Bar couldn't help.
    ANY suggestions, anyone?

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !
"tnd", good idea, but iPod hardware wasn't in the "software" area you pointed to. However, it got things in the right direction. Thanks.
Katrina: Worked like a charm. In retrospect, it's obvious, but it didn't occur to me (or, the Genius Bar guy) to look at the other hard drive letters. I'm using a laptop that connects during the week to it's "home base" corporate network when I'm in the office. There are "h", "l" and "n" drives there, and even when the laptop is undocked and running outside the office, I guess those drives are still in there as assigned, even though not connected. Checked as you suggested, and sure enough, the iPod showed as "h", and that must have been the problem. Reassigned it to "P" for "pod" since I'll remember that in case the IT guys at work add more drives to my node. Clearly, a "DOH!".
THANKS, my faith in Apple is restored -- I was ready to throw this thing through the window!

  • Itunes sees aTV but aTV does not sees iTunes

Hi, my appleTV is not seeing the itunes that is configured to sync with. When I go to iTunes, I can see the aTV and also sync files to it. I have re-booted the computer (running Windows) and no luck of aTV seeing it.
Any suggestions ? To fix it I need to configure the aTV to sync with iTunes, but then I have to reload all the content to it. It is getting annoying.
    Thanks !
    Miguel

If you think this may have occured after an itunes upgrade try the following:
From the sources menu on the tv choose syncing and then select 'change itunes library', type the pass code you are given into itunes.

To my knowledge, I've only seen this for imessage only and not SMS.
The other users would need to have send read receipts enabled on their phone.

  • HyperTerminal sees a COM port but VISA does not

It should not be possible that HyperTerminal sees a COM port but VISA does not. Does anyone know why or have any ideas?
Here's some more info: I wrote a LabView (LV) program and deployed it (via the Application Builder) to some of our production department's PCs (some Windows XP and some Windows 7). We use it to set up products we design and manufacture through our device's USB serial port. The USB port is actually a virtual COM port (VCP) - a USB to Serial converter or "bridge". We have a custom driver for our device and since each device's USB bridge chip is programmed with a different serial number, every time we connect a new device to the PC the installer runs and assigns a new COM port number. This is so our customers can use multiple devices on a PC. Fine. On one of our production PC's we were close to  COM900 ports (HyperTerminal sees only up to COM256) when suddenly Win7 would not allow any more. We were able to uninstall orphaned (non-present) COM ports from DeviceManager ("DM") by starting it from a command console (DOS window) with a special command-line switch, "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" then "start devmgmt.msc" (I have this in a batch file). In DM View menu you can "Show hidden devices" and uninstall them as if they were connected. I've also tried uninstalling them the normal way when the device was actually connected. Either way, sometimes, not always, depending on the COM port number, after reusing that port number by installing a new device which picks up that old, freed-up number, LV VISA doesn't see it. In other words, when "Refresh" is clicked in the COM port VISA list box, any new devices installed should be and normally are seen. (Refresh is not needed if the application is started after the device's driver is installed. It is only need if the LV application is open with the new device is added.) However, HyperTerminal does see it and lists it in the Properties screen, the "Connect using..." list box. And the port works with HyperTerminal. (Of course we've tried rebooting after uninstalling and/or reinstalling the device, with the same results.)
When I've spoken to the NI Applications Engineers in the past about serial port issues (not about this problem) they have confirmed that if HyperTerminal can see the port then NI VISA should also see it. This is crazy. I am posting this in hope that someone can shed some light on this problem.
    Thank you. -Ed

Good catch. Yes, we're using the Silicon Labs CP2102 and have created a "custom driver" installation package. Our new PCBs have a factory-programmed chip, so the PC reuses that COM port (COM3 on that PC). The problem is when we we re-program the CP2102 (setIDs exe) with our PID, and device strings (including the S/N), the PC runs our installer and assigns the next COM port number. I was hoping that maybe it would go up to 64K or something! Anyway, it surpassed COM256 but we ran into this problem when almost up to COM900.)
There is a registry entry for each SN device, which shows the assigned port. If we delete the key with regedit, the COM port database (don't know the file name) still has the port number. That's where Device Manager comes in. It seems to allow us to manually delete the ports, but it would take quite a while to delete 900. (I was trying to make a batch file for DevCon, but couldn't get it to see the HW ID of the devices in need of deletion.) So we tried manually deleting a few. After doing that Device Manager shows that Windows (and HyperTerminal) can reuse the port number when a new device (new SN) is installed, but, as you know from this post, VISA cannot see unless I manually add it in MAX.
I can't see how it has anything to do with the Silicon Labs driver. I might have to delete ALL of MY devices, then uninstall the driver files, reboot, then reinstall, as you suggested with the SiLabs driver. However, I don't see how VISA will now see these changes. VISA must have it's own database. That's what I thought deleting the ports in MAX would clear out, like a fresh install, but apparently not.
I've been through Silicon Labs' tech support on other issues and they've been able to help on some. I could run this by them.
BTW, have you noticed that Silicon Labs' chip and driver, while faster than NI's own "bridge" or serial-USB converter (I returned it because at $100 it's performance was worse than a $20 converter you can buy in Staples), is substantially slower than a real serial port? For example, our device can transmit 250 readings per second (a 12 byte string). A real serial port used with my LabView program can keep up, i.e.., graph & tabulate at that rate, but with a VCP we only get about 70 RPS. Same code. Can't figure this one out. They say the've tested the driver to 900 KB claimed. We're using 115KB here. Anyway, the VCP driver makes it look like a COM port which LV thinks it is. Why is it slower than a real port when the USB should be able to work almost 10 times faster than I'm using it (up to 1024 bytes per mSec per the full-speed USB spec, which SiLabs claims they verified)?
Anyway, I appreciate your help. Thanks! -Ed

    Hey mjrussell,
When liquid comes to liquid being spilled on a iPod, you never know how bad it will be. Your best bet if you want to get it fixed is to set it for serviced through Apple. Take a look at the articles below for more information. The second article will also have pricing for your iPod nano.

I have a PC.  I would like to sync my iPad2 via itunes.  My computer recognizes my ipad but itunes does not.  I have uninstalled itunes, shut down the computer and restarted plus reinstalled itunes.  I visited the Apple store there is no problem with the iPad or the cord. I still have the same problem and am unable to sync when I plug in the iPad via the USB cord.  Does anyone have further suggestions?

Try going into the control panel, add/remove programs. Uninstall iTUnes, Apple mobile device service, apple application support. Then redownload and reinstall iTunes and see if it'll work
If the computer sees your iPad you know the cable and connection is good, so the issue has to be software.

  • Hi; I updated my iTunes to the latest version (11.1.4.62), but it does not detect my iPhone 4s any more.

    Hi,
I updated my iTunes to version 11.1.4.62, but it does not detect my iPhone 4s any more. I have tried the following ways but still did not work:
    Rebooted the computer
    Rebooted the iPhone
plugged and unplugged the USB cable multiple times and to various USB ports
    Uninstalled and installed the i-Tunes
Signed out the iTunes and signed in again
my USB cable and ports are all ok
my ios version on iPhone is : 7.4.4
my laptop os is windows 8.1 and my processor is: Intel Core i7-3610QM @ 2.30 GHz
    I appreciate your help.

I find this on another post and tried it.  It WORKED.  I had to modify to fit my situation but give it a try.  Good luck.
Go to Windows 8.1 Control Panel.
Go to Hardware and Sound; Devices and Printers; Device Manager; Portable Devices (look for Apple IPad)
Right-click, then select properties on the menu list.
Under the "Driver" tab menu, confirm the update driver button is not greyed out.  If the update driver button is grey and unselectable, you need to select and click "Change Settings" button located near the lower left corner.
Now you can click the "Driver" tab menu near the top, so you can see the "Update Driver" button.
    Select "Update Driver".
Select and click "Browse my computer for driver software".
For Windows 8.1 64 bit, it should be located in the folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
Click Next, and let the driver re-install.
iTunes  11.1.4.62 should open automatically if your iphone is connected already.

You don't. Since you have an Intel Mac, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.
