Interaction Between Blackboard Academic Suite & .DOC Files

Hey all.
My college uses the BlackBoard Academic Suite to post messages, homeworks, and other miscellaneous items. Usually, files posted are in the Windows Microsoft Office format of ".doc".
However, when Safari downloads those files, it seemingly adds ".dot", otherwise known as a Microsoft Office Template. So if the file was "syllabus.doc", it had now become "syllabus.doc.dot".
Are there any fixes for this? It's rather annoying to have to change the name of a file to just read my assignments or work for college. Thanks for any and all help!

There is also an app called OpenItApp (which I developed). I made it because my uni also refused to support the official Blackboard Mobile app. OpenItApp works with 19 universities around the world but it should work with many more.

  • Safari 2.0.4/Blackboard Academic Suite

I would like to know if there are any posts which would enable me to configure Safari 2.0.4 to work correctly with the Blackboard Academic Suite Discussion Forums? I have been unable to read the discussion posts even when clicking on the link for browsers that do not support iframe.
I have searched for information, and it appears that Safari does not support iframes at all, but wanted to see if anyone had references to a solution.
    Thank you for your help.

    3. Using Get Info, verify that you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders:

    • Your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
Check the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the Get Info window for each of the folders above. If you find you are either not the Owner, or do not have Access of Read & Write on those folders, make changes accordingly using the pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel,

  • Off-campus access to Blackboard Academic Suite very slow with Leopard

To remotely access the Blackboard Academic Suite of Grand Rapids Community College using Leopard with Safari has been very slow to impossible since I installed 10.5. It takes 2 minutes to load the GRCC homepage. With 10.4 both pages loaded instantaneously. With Firefox they both load immediately. Strange enough, other sites load without any problems, in fact I notice that some are exceptionally fast in loading. I hope these issues will be straightened out soon.

A slow boot time can be caused by login items.
    User Login Items:
        Flux
        NoSleep
        ClipMenu
        Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector2
        BetterTouchTool
        USBOverdriveHelper
        TotalFinder
        Gmail Notifr
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
Remove one login item noted above then restart your Mac to test. It may be one or multiple items causing the slow boot.

  • Login Issues with Blackboard Academic Suite

I have a Curve 8330 v4.5.0.66, and I am trying to login to Blackborad Academic Suite.  The device will load the homepage, and the "User Login" icon appears, but when I hover over the icon the mouse arrow does not turn into a finger and I cannot select it to login.  It seems to be treating the login box like a regular picture?!?
The URL is http://blackboard.ecu.edu if you would like to give it a try on your device.
    Thanks!

whatyou have done following the third screenshot is configure the browser called "Internet Browser".
the next step is to.. use that specific browser when going to that login page.
    to do so :
open the browser, open menu, select "Go To"
select the line with the correct URL, open menu, choose "change browser" and select the "Internet Browser". then hit enter then enter.
The search box on top-right of this page is your true friend, and the public Knowledge Base too:

  • Blackboard Academic Suite

    Hi,
I am having trouble with login to Blackboard. Not sure why... The sign in option is there but the cursor does not recognize any links or the login boxes. I tried viewing other posts and trouble shooting that way, but nothing seems to work.  To access blackboard I go to my school website and then click on the link for blackboard; it is all down hill from there.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Karissa

    Welcome to the forums
This may be a compatibility issue with the browser. Not all web pages can load on the blackberry phones, especially those which require adobe flash player plugins. You could try to change your browser's emulation mode. Go into the browser, press menu, click options. In "Browser Configuration", set "Emulation Mode" to one of the other options available...this may help.
You can also try using 3rd party browsers (which I prefer) such as Bolt or Opera Mini.

  • Opening DOC files shows corrupted, EDIT works.

I have super weird problem. Freshly installed office 2013 home n student x86, windows 8,1 x86, all latest update's offered are installed.
What happens that only on few doc documents on opening word says they are corrupted or that i may not have permission to open them.If you right click and select EDIT option, it opens and works just normal i can editi it and save it afterwards, but again
i cant just open it by double clicking.
I already tried re-installing office and same problem.

    Hi,
The issue might be caused by some compatibility between Word 2013 and Doc file. I recommend we try the following workarounds:
    1. Copy all the connect from Doc file to a new blank Docx file.
    2. Convert the Doc file to Docx file.

  • Firefox 3.6.9 will not upload photos to Blackboard 8 Academic Suite, Blackboard's solution is to use Firefox 2.0.0.20 I need to use a more recent version of firefox. Any ideas?

I have windows 7 professional. My son is taking an online class (digital photography) which uses Blackboard 8 Academic Suite. Last week photos stopped uploading successfully. Blackboard's solution is to use Firefox 2.0.0.20. I had to uninstall Firfoz 3.6.9, and install the earlier version from a link provided by Blackboard. It worked, however Firefox popped up a message saying that this version is no longer supported and that I should update to 3.6

Depending upon which version of WebCT your school is using, you will have to use Firefox 3.5.x, Firefox 3.0.x, or Firefox 2.0.0.20 when accessing the Blackboard site.
My advice is to install the Firefox Portable version that you need for Blackboard on your computer, and use that installation only for Blackboard. Continue to use 3.6 for all other web browsing.

  • "uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version" error message when opening a *.doc file with Word already running

Several customers running different versions of Office 2011 (14.4.1-14.4.5) on OSX varying from 10.7.5 to 10.9.5, running on various kinds of hardware (iMac/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air) of various ages are having issues opening *.doc files if the Word is already open. The error message that gets displayed is, "XXXX.doc uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version"
When the customer tries to open the same file via File-Open, she gets "The file is locked for editing. you can open the file as read-only".
When trying to do so, she gets "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters".
If Word gets Force-quit, the same document opens without any problems.
    1. Repairing Disk permissions was ran several times. and the volume was found to be OK.
    2. I have noticed that in this scenario either deleting the normal.dotm or com.microsoft.word.plist (~/Library/Preferences) sometimes resolves the issue, sometimes it doesn’t. There is no pattern to follow. All versions of Office are affected, the fully updated and the non-updated ones.
    3. I have tried completely removing the suite using Office 2011 Uninstall.app and/or Remove Office 2011 Uninstaller.pkg, then going through customer's library and manually removing all the Office references.
    4. None of these systems had Office 2008 in the past.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Reboot both the Mac and the server. Word opens .DOC files and Excel opens .XLS files. As you have found out by copying the files to the computer. It is the connection between the 2 computer that is causing the error.

  • Saving a PDF or DOC file into Oracle 9i using Developer Forms 10g

    Hi guys,
    I want to save a pdf or doc file into oracle 9i. I am using Developer 10 g. Please help me;
    1. What datatype field should be in database table to store such file.
    2. Which code should I use in Forms 10g to display open file dialog, get the name and save that into database table.
    Thanks in advance

WEBUTIL is a library used with forms to interact with the client. With Forms10G the library comes shipped with the developer suite, for forms 9i i'm not sure, check the forms-page at otn if there is any download available. For documentation about how to do a file-upload, simply search the forum, there are lots of examples.

  • Pretty much confirmed interactivity between Word/Acrobat Mac vs. Same on PC is completely hosed in certain situations...Please tell me I am wrong!

I've pretty much confirmed that the interactivity between Word/Acrobat Mac vs. Word/Acrobat PC is completely hosed in certain situations...Please tell me I am wrong!
Situation: two workgroups need to work with each other sharing and editing word and pdf files for complex documents containing a TOC, list of figures, etc.
Problems reproducible on many machine types and configs:
    1. WORD FILES: TOCs do not retain hot links within a doc that has been touched by a mac, and then re-saved as a PDF with the intent to have a linked TOC with chapter heads.
    2. PDF FILES: that have been touched by a mac, for example to edit the document properties, will loose all TOC function as in problem #1 above.
In short, this rots for mac users who have to share/edit these files with PC brethren.
The only solution that I found for mac users is this:
Do your thing in Word 2008. Then have a PC version of Word and PC version of acrobat installed on a virtual drive like Parallels or VMWare, etc. Delete your TOC using MS Word for Windows, reinsert a new one, and then use the PC distiller installed into word by Acrobat Professional to create a new PDF that will be cross-platform functional.
I had a meeting with the Mac users to explain this work around and they looked at me like I was crazy, and they pretty much said go pound sand, we don't care if the TOCs are linked or not.
Well, I may be exaggerating there a bit, but NO ONE was happy with this solution, including myself. Our BIG question is "Is anyone going to fix this problem in the shortterm?!?" And it's Microsoft and Adobe both that seem to have some responsibility here...with an emphasis on Adobe, as it's clearly not just an MS isssue, as you can totally destroy a working TOC in a PDF file by just editing the file properties on a mac. Arg...
I also find it frustrating that Adobe does not have a forum for cross-platform specific issues, which to me seems consipiritory. Ha!

  • What is the difference between Topic Keywords and Index File Keywords?

What is the difference between Topic Keywords and Index File Keywords? Any advantages to using one over the other? Do they appear differently in the generated index?
    RH9.0.2.271
    I'm using Webhelp

    Hi there
When you create a RoboHelp project you end up with many different ancillary files that are used to store different bits of information. Many of these files bear the name you assigned to the project at the time you created it. The index file has the project name and it ends with a .HHK file extension. (HHK meaning HTML Help Keywords)
Generally, unless you change RoboHelp's settings, you add keywords to this file and associate topics to the keywords via the Index pod. At the time you compile a CHM or generate other types of output, the file is consulted and the index is built.
As I said earlier, the default is to add keywords to the Index file until you configure RoboHelp to add the keywords to the topics themselves. Once you change this, any keyword added will become a META tag in the topic code. If your keyword is BOFFO, the META tag would look like this:
    <meta name="MS-HKWD" content="BOFFO" />
When the help is compiled or generated, the Index (.HHK) file is consulted as normal, but any topics containing keywords added in this manner are also added to the Index you end up with. From the appearance perspective, the end user woudn't know the difference or be able to tell. Heck, if all you ever did was interact with the Index pod, you, as an author wouldn't know either. Well, other than the fact that the icons appear differently.
Operationally, keywords added to the topics themselves may hold an advantage in that if you were to import these topics into other projects, the Index keywords would already be present.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Understanding compile errors due to copying code from a doc file and not a txt file

    SITUATION:
My instructor for my micro-controller class refuses to save sample code to a text file and instead saves it to a word document file instead. When I open up the doc file and copy/paste the code into my IDE "CodeWarrior" it causes errors upon compile time.
I am having to rewrite all the code into a text editor and then copy/paste it into my IDE.
    MY UNDERSTANDING:
I was told to always save code as a text file because when you save code as a word document file it will bring in unwanted characters when your copy/pasting the code into your IDE for compiling.
Their are students in my class using the schools computers running "Windows" that copied and pasted the code into CodeWarrior and it compiled fine. This is not only frustrating but confusing. However, I know their are students in class with "PC's" running windows that had the same trouble I did so I know it's not a Mac issue.
Also I am running "Parallels" because my IDE for this micro-controller "Code Warrior" is not avaiable for my OS. I realize there are several IDE's out there that require "Windows OS" in general but I know this situation is not a Mac issue or Parallels issue or even a Windows issue. It's purly an issue of formatting that is done between the file being copied and the target program or so I'm understanding.
Can someone exlain to me in better words or perhaps provide a resource, documentation or article that will enlighten me on this issue. I would like to better state my case next time. I'm tired of being told this is a MAC issue and that Windows is just plain better.

The problem is (as you suggest) almost certainly a gremlin issue - characters that for one reason or another Code Warrior cannot interpret correctly. Why it happens to you and not others is a different matter. That could mean that the pofessor uses fonts that are not on your machine, or that he is using a different version of word, or it could be in how you access the data. For instance, if the prof posts this word doc on the web you may get different results if you download the file and open it in Word as opposed to opening it directly from a web browser.
The sure-fire solution is to download TextWrangler and copy the code in there first. TW has a number of tools for finding and removing unpleasant characters. it adds a step, but... you could also try resaving the doc file as a plain text file from within word.
