Interesting result: Benchmarking MBP w Battery w/o Battery

Machine: MacBookPro3,1
Standard 15" version with 2GB ram and 256 Vram
Running windows XP SP2 with everything updated/patched via Bootcamp 1.4
Here are the following results: AC plug in w/o Battery AC plug in w Battery
Aquamark 3: 69,300 / 100,500
Final Fantasy XI - Hi: 4280 / 6310
(official Benchmark 3)
Couterstrike Source: 133 fps / 166fps
1440x900, everything max
no AA no AF
Super PI 1.1: 1m40s / 52s
Why battery plug-in or not is an performance issue under window XP? I haven't compared any benchmark on Mac OS X yet.
If battery plug-in will make MBP running in full speed is truth, then it is the best "NOT" to remove your battery even it is fully charged!
More benchmark's result will be coming soon...

Sunny,
Macbook Pros are capable of using more power than the magsafe adapters provide, for short periods of time. In such cases, the battery normally provides the additional power.
When you remove the battery, firmware automatically throttles the CPU to approx. 50%, to avoid drawing more wattage than the magsafe can provide. If it did not, and the magsafe's supply was exceeded, very bad things could happen (in addition to an abrupt and improper shutdown, your MBP's components could be "fried").

    Is it the expected behaviour?

  • MBP A1211 Battery Needs to be Services

MBP indicates battery needs to be serviced. Can I solve this by buying/installing a new battery. Note please that battery indicator shows full charge, which drops with use. Thanks for any help

Apple considers the battery in your MBP to be a consumable item - and it sounds as if yours is consumed. Get in touch with your local Apple Store or an AASP and see how much a new battery would cost - you don't say which model you have or if yours is a user-replaceable or non-user-replaceable battery, so I can't guess at the cost.

  • My late 2013 MBP Retina battery gets only about 4 hrs. What might be wrong?

My late 2013 MBP Retina battery gets only about 4 hrs. What might be wrong?

    I found a solution!
Perhaps this is just temporary, but I have my display up and working again.
Although the symptoms are different were a bit different, the solution here worked:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120259/grey-screen-after-login-blue-scr een-of-death-from-cmdr
As I was able to connect to my HD via an external monitor, in the finder, I went to:
    1. Macintosh HD --> System --> Library --> Extensions
    2. From there I moved all of the files that started with ADM and ATI (19 in total for me) to a folder on my desktop. (You will need to enter your admin password for this)
    3. Next was a restart.
    4. Then my display started working again.
    5. After that, I transferred the files back into my Extensions folder.
    6. I then did another restart with my fingers crossed and breath held. It worked.
Also... During the last few days of trying to find a fix, I restored a Mavericks backup to my computer away from Yosemite.
I'm very sure this problem occurred when I put my MBP to sleep, disconnected the power in its sleep, while something was connected to a USB port and unplugging the USB device (for me an iPhone charger) while the MBP was closed.
I hope this helps the next person.

Hello people, i recently bought a brand new mid 2010 mbpro 13"
im worried about my battery health
85% (4906/5770) it was 86% couple of days ago and 96% about a week ago
    28 cycles
    13 weeks
i have calibrated 2 times but nothing changed, should i send to repair?
    thanks!

    Hello!
My MBP 13" battery also have the same problem. After the recent sudden shutdown, the technical support told me to calibrate my battery.
While it was charging with the adaptor, my Full Charge Capacity was 5002.
and now that i have charged fully + at least 2 Hours, it became:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 4484
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4609
    im also puzzled too~

  • MBP 17" Battery Capacity and Run Times : Survey

I've had 2 MBP 17's so far, and I'd like to get a general idea from everyone about their battery capacity and run times they are experiencing.
My first MBP17 had a Full Charge Capacity of ~5900mAh before calibration and PMU reset, and 6800mAh after. This translated to about 3:40 of run time under light load.
My current MBP17 had a Full Charge Capacity of ~5899mAh before calibration and PMU reset, and 6942mAh after (currently). This translates to about 3:48 of runtime....still trying to get some more real-world run time numbers under different loads.
This proves to me that it is quite critical to calibrate your battery and reset your PMU at least once to ensure that your battery is reporting it's correct capacity. I'd be interested to know what everyone else's batteries are reporting.

  • 15" MBP (SR) Battery Issue...Happening to many users al of a sudden?

    Hi all,
I have a 15" MBP (SR) That has been my favorite computer of all time. I take great care of it. Recently it just shut off without warning while on battery power...
No warning at all...When I turned it back on it said 44%...I decided to look in the system profiler and this is what I got:
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: Sony-ASMB012-36b2-9d39
    Manufacturer: Sony
    Device name: ASMB012
    Pack Lot Code: 0003
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 102a
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0303
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1202
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 2445
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 19
    Condition: Check battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 36
    Voltage (mV): 11926
    1. What is the full charge capacity suppossed to be?
    2. Why is it dying after 19 cycles?
    3. It says check battery...I know this means I need a new one or should bring it to the apple store, but does anyone know exactly what this means?
This is the original battery that came with the machine, but It should not be dead already. This is way out of spec.
    ALSO,
MY sister's and mothers powerbook batteries all died less then a week ago, all of a sudden out of the blue, with no warning...
Is there something going on? virus? Bug in OSX? I looked it up and many have all of a sudden had their batteries konk out!! What gives?
I do not qualify for the replacement program due to my serial number, and am out of warranty, so I will be stuck spending 140 bucks on a new battery...
But I thought before I waste my money I would check here to see if you had any advice, similar experience and or contacts to get this replaced/reported...
    Thanks

    Fancy meeting you here!
I actually don't think it's significantly more frequent than in the past - but it's definitely an ongoing issue.
    To answer your questions:
    1. Nominal new full charge capacity is 5500 mAh (actually, 5556, but usually rounded down). So, your 'health' is ~44%.
    2. Most likely because it's a faulty battery.
    3. 'Check battery' means the battery circuitry is reporting a problem. Rather like the 'check engine' light on a car dashboard, this can mean many things...
First thing to try is an SMC reset, but I suspect that won't help. Did you calibrate your battery every two months, or so? (You cannot calibrate successfully now, with the sudden shut downs occurring.)
If you happen to live near an Apple Store, go to the Genius Bar. Bring a copy of this linked page, which includes a battery warranty extension. That applies specifically to Core Duo machines, I know, but C2D users have reported getting free replacement batteries under the program. You may wish to point out that as of the last update to that linked page, all C2D machines were still covered by the original one year warranty. I recommend visiting a Genius Bar if possible, but you can try calling AppleCare as well (less likely to result in a free replacement, IMHO). The other relevant link is the Apple notebook batteries page, which states that a battery should maintain 80% health for 300 cycles - you are clearly out of spec, based on that.
    Hope this helps...

  • 17" MBP Uni - Battery (mAh): 12000 or 17000 - Check your batteries!

    Hey All,
This may be very premature, but it would seem some people are reporting 17000(mAh) on their batteries after calibration, while most are reporting 12000(mAh) or so.
The few with 17000(mAh) are reporting a pretty significant battery life extension over the other people, but it has yet to be determined if this is due to proper calibration, or some lucky users are getting better batteries.
I encourage you all to take a look and post your results. Also, be sure to post whether you have calibrated the battery or not as it may have something to do with it.
    Here's how you do this:
    - Goto The "Apple" in the Top Left Corner, select "About This Mac"
    - Select "More Info..."
    - Goto "Power" on the side
    - Copy all info from "Battery Information" (Don't need System Power Settings)
    Thanks!

I think somethings wrong with this MBP, It's been slow since day one. I haven't calibrated the battery. I am assuming that in order to do so correctly you just follow the instructions that come up when you search the desktop help...
Also, for longevity and battery health, should the computer be plugged in and charging anytime it is possible or is it good to sometimes let it run off solely the battery??
How do you all treat your batteries?
    Thanks in advance.

  • MBP 15" Battery Suddenly Draining Fast.

    Hi.
So my MBP 15" has always had a decent battery, the usual lengths based on average usage.
Today it suddenly started discharging really fast. 10% in 30 minutes when doing nothing but web browsing over wifi with screen at half brightness. It went down 78% this afternoon with just web browsing, a couple of youtube videos and a little bit of music, normally this would not make much of a dent.
(Note, it has gone down 3% just writing this message)
Activity monitor is showing no rogue processes running and spotlight hasn't been indexing.
The Machine is a 15" 2011 MBP 2.0Ghz Core i7, 4GB RAM, High Res display, 720rpm HDD. Running OSX Lion 10.7.2. I'm sure that is more info than you need, but just in case.

Activity Monitor won't show a rogue processes unless you change its "Show" window from the default of "My Processes" to "All Processes" as in this example:
    Have you done that?
Do you have the Windows emulator "Parallels" installed. There is an issue with it that can cause the Dock to use 100 percent of the processor cycles. Parallels does not have to be runing for this to happen; the culprit is apparently one of that programs background processes. It can be fixed with a patch provided by the developer here:
    http://kb.parallels.com/en/111541
Are you running anti-virus or internet security software? The expensive commercial versions can really drag down performance.

  • MBP A1278 Battery Drain during sleep

So I've been having issues with my Mid 2010 MBP A1278.  I always charge it to 100%, but quickly overnight it drains and in a couple days goes to zero without using it at all.  Does anyone have any tips?  Right now I'm using OS X 10.8.5, but upgading to Mavericks in the next day or two. Below is the notes I made about when I opened and closed the laptops with battery percentages. Is this normal?
    8:12 PM 99% Wednesday
    Then closed lid
7:04 AM 88% Thursday Morning - checked battery for 1 minute
    Then closed lid
9:40 PM 50% Friday Night - checked battery for 1 minute
    Then closed lid
7:46 AM 40% Saturday Morning - started working with WiFi connectivity
    8:19 AM 29% Saturday Morning
    then closed lid

Not much. Mine goes down maybe 1-2% overnight, if anything.

  • MBP weak battery...

I've briefly looked through threads similar to this, but I don't think any of those apply. I bought my MBP in summer of 06 (so https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/ doesn't apply), and since then, it's run 353 battery cycles. It looks like all exchanges have to have <300 cycles, so I don't think I can get it replaced normally. However, the battery health seems unusually low...coconutBattery reports 30% health at the moment. The entire Power section of System Profile reads:

Is this something unusual, and if so do you think Apple would/could do anything about it?

Your battery is certainly on the way out, and 30% health is quite low. Even though your battery is not part of the recall, be aware that there are two 'replacement' programs for batteries, the recall, and a general acknowledgement that there are battery problems which is coupled to a battery warranty extension (to two years for Core Duo machines). You may have already read the page where that is explained.
Even though you have >300 cycles you are clearly far below the 80% health those 300 cycles should have held to. So, you need a new battery, and Apple might provide one for free. Call AppleCare (there are special prompts for battery problems) or visit an Apple Store. Be polite but firm. Worst-case scenario, you have to buy a new battery. But it's probable that will step up - their customer service is quite good.
    Hope this helps...

  • Is it ok if I charge MBP even battery is 90% ?

I always use ac power when using my MBP late 2011. then if wanna sleep, i will sleep my MBP and disconnect the ac power. when i open back, the battery is below 100% and then i connect back my MBP to continue my work. is it okay for my battery?
sometimes i used until 75% or 45% if i need to go study somewhere. then i connect the ac power when at home to use ac power. its normal right?

it shouldnt cause damage, the below 100% could be from a multitude off problems if the computer is in sleep and not shut-off it is probably proccecess that run regardless of you not using it. ie operating systems procceces that turn it on when you move your mouse. its nothing to be worried about. you cannot overcharge like our friend said before me aswell. most computers have a regulator in them if not in the powercord that keep the currant at a certain voltage. for example a car runs on around 12.5-7 volts depending on the model and is drained at 12.1 or lower you add a current to it at 12.6 and it will recharge but not overcharge. so dont worry about it.

  • Quad Core MBP saving battery life by only using two cores

I am trying to use my MBP 8,2 with two of my four cores shut down in order to preserve battery life. Is this at all possible through 3rd party apps?

This whole thread reminds me of some of the nutty ideas American carmakers came up with during one of the first gasoline shocks back in the 70's. Don't remember whether it was Chrysler or GM, hellbent on keeping their huge gas guzzler engines, came up with the idea of disabling one or more cylinders when "not needed". A totally Rube Goldberg-ian contraption ensued, more prone to failure than any potential gas it may have saved.
And while on topic and following Señor Grant's lead, last Wedneday decided to take my MBP to the edge. 8% battery charge remaining, that is. That took the whole of 7:15, while running at 50% backlight, WiFi, MS Word and two browsers going (all four cores, too). Then on Thursday 10.7.4 + Safari 5.1.7 came out. So, back to the drawing board on Friday. 7:20 and 6% remaining, got tired of waiting and all this mine is bigger than yours BS and plugged it back in...

  • New MBP, new battery~

Is it necessary to charge a new battery for at least 24 hrs for best performance in the future? Also, is it necessary to leave the MBP alone while charging for the first time?

Apple's directions state that you should use the computer on ac power for two hours after it shows full charge, and then disconnect from electricity and use it on battery until low battery warning, then save your data and close applications, use the computer until it goes to sleep, then either let it sleep for at least 5 hours (preferred) letting rest on battery (not ac til five hours) or shut it down and leave for at least 5 hours without electricity.
To use the computer after that, first reconnect to electricity, then open the computer to wake, or press the power button to wake, then wait for it to come out of hibernation, then use.
The initial use til charged can be divided but the rest needs to be done in good order.
Yes, the five hours rest before ac power is restored is essential.
