Intermittent USB automount failure with GNOME 3
Hi all,
I'm running an up-to-date Arch64 system with a USB 3.0-capable motherboard (via xhci-hcd driver). This is a desktop system that is either in use or in sleep mode most of the time (I don't reboot often). Most of the time, auto-mounting of USB sticks or my camera works perfectly. Plug the device in, it shows up in Nautilus.
However, over the past 4-5 months I've experienced intermittent failures of auto-mount, always after the computer has been through several suspend/resume cycles. When I plug a USB storage device in, I can see it with lsusb, but it doesn't auto-mount. The only way to restore automount functionality is to reboot (restarting GNOME shell, the X server, or logging out don't do it). I've searched the forums, double checked my package installations, udev rules, etc., but can't find any problem. I finally caught some info in the logs tonight; can someone please help me understand what's going on?
This was the first time auto-mount failed after working fine a few minutes before (prior to suspend/resume). Immediately after plugging the device I got this:
Apr 26 22:20:45 localhost kernel: [ 2038.156072] usb 4-2: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd

A few minutes later, I unplugged the device and plugged it into a different USB hub, and automount worked! It looks like this time a scsi driver was invoked somehow....what's going on?

I am getting this problem as well. lsusb command does not show my device as being plugged into the computer. The only way to get anything off of any USB storage device is to reboot the system. Very annoying. Again, after suspend/resume is when this problem turns up.
What can I contribute to help solve this issue?

Automount problem with Gnome 2.28
Hi,
Since there isn't ayone that seems to check the newbie corner, i'll explain my problem again.
When i updated my gnome from 2.26 to 2.28, my system stopped to automount DVDs and USB devices.
Is there anyway to have this working again apart from going back to 2.26 or changing my desktop environment ?
Thanks for help !I assume that you get a "not authorized"-Message (or something similar, i am currently not on gnome to check what it was for me).
For me the following solved the problem:
As root create a file "/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/mount.pkla" with the following content (the filename does not really matter as long as the extension is .pkla and is located in this directory):
[allow me to mount my damn drives]
Identity=unix-group:wheel
Action=org.freedesktop.devkit.disks.*
ResultAny=yes
This allows every user in the group "wheel" (this is the group of users that are allowed to su, see here) to do anything that is related to disks. This configurationfile is found by the policykit that is used by Gnome to find out what it is allowed to do. See here for more information about policykit. -
Intermittent USB mouse failure?
Has anyone else run into this? I have a 1Ghz "dome" iMac G4 that I've had for four years or so, and have always run the same keyboard (original Apple) and mouse (Kensington optical 2-button with wheel). Lately, though, I've noticed that at random intervals the mouse goes "dark" and no longer responds. After another random interval, anywhere from a couple of seconds to many minutes, the mouse lights up again and all is well. The mouse is plugged into the keyboard's USB port, and the keyboard stays responsive all during these episodes.
All I can think is that I have so much USB stuff plugged into the thing that I am drawing the current down on the USB bus to where it can't drive everything anymore, so it cuts off the mouse. I have an external Belkin FireWire/USB hub and an EyeTV 250 plugged directly into the iMac, and at various times, a wireless phone, a SanDisk memory card reader, or a 5G iPod plugged into the three USB sockets on the Belkin. The keyboard is plugged directly into the iMac, not into the Belkin hub. There are also several external FW drives plugged into the Belkin or the FW ports on the iMac.
Anyone else ever run into this? Jeez, in retrospect I wish I'd waited to get one of the later units with USB 2.0 on it... I don't think the current draw would be any different, but at least I could spend less than a whole day resyncing a new iPod or downloading 500 pictures off an SD card!
Does it smell like I'm just running out of current on the USB side? This didn't happen until a few months ago, when I started using the iMac a lot more and plugged more stuff into it. I just figured that each port would be powered individually, rather than sharing a pool of current. Since only the keyboard and mouse are on the one USB port, and always have been, maybe the three USB ports share a single power line? Any ideas?
TurtleActually I have very infrequently experienced this on my iMac G4 (USB2.0) but I'd always put it down to the elderly mouse I'm using; it isn't nearly often enough for me to actually do anything about it.
I have the (Microsoft) mouse and a Bluetooth dongle connected to the keyboard, I also have a TV tuner connected direct to the iMac and a powered USB hub connected to the third port. I assume that you are powering your Belkin hub?
Unfortunately System Profiler doesn't really give us the ability to investigate this as the "Power" figures (measured in milliAmps?) as the figures seem to be generic rather than an actual figure of draw.
Have you considered a Firewire Card Reader?

Intermittent outgoing signal failure with Bluetooth
Now and then, randomly, the person I'm calling using Bluetooth can't hear me, though I can hear him/her. This occurs using both a Motorola headset and my Ford Sync system, so the problem seems to be with the phone's Bluetooth. It isn't predictable; it may work fine for one call, then exhibit the problem with the very next - same call conditions, nothing changed, phone in the same place. The phone in question is an iPhone 5, with the latest software installed. The problem also happened with the iPhone 4 I had previous to this one, with about the same degree of randomness, so it probably isn't associated with anyting unique to the 5. Anyone else seeing this, or have a solution?
Alright, just got to know from the user communities that this is a common problem across many users and for some, this got rectified by getting the phone replaced.

[Kinda solved] "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." with gnome-fallback
After some upgrades today, I got with an unusable gnome. On every startx it failed with the window "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occured and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again." (forcing you to close the session, just to reappear on restart)
After ~6 hours on this, and downgrading several packages to no avail, I discovered that the file /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-fallback.session had been removed.
As I use gnome-fallback, the dconf key “org.gnome.desktop.session” contains “gnome-fallback”, and that apparently requires such file to exist
If you need to change the key with command-line:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session session-name gnome-fallback
I finally got a working system by copying /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome.session to /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-fallback.session and changing -use a text editor- its line "RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;" to "RequiredComponents=metacity;gnome-settings-daemon;gnome-panel"
I hope this serves others to fix this issue.
I still miss the upper applet bar (although perhaps due to uninstalling then reinstalling gnome-panel), and key shortcuts (such as Alt-tab) are not working, but most functionality is there.
If you end up at a desktop with no menus, a way to work is to make in the desktop a symlink to /usr/bin/gnome-terminal.I apologize for my post above....it's misleading. The bug in question is regarding a similar failure with gnome, but involving the standard session, not fallback. The fallback issue may be one of deprecation, I've read that gnome was no longer supporting it as software rendering was considered 'good enough'.
So if you are having the issue described in the OP you may want to file a separate bug. I posted my bug here as a result of a quick skim of the post and replies to it. After re-reading it, I see they are separate issues. -
HP LaserJet M1212nf MFP Printer - Communication Failure with the scanner
Dear all,
May I kindly ask if there are any known resolutions in terms of a scanning issue with the HP LaserJet M1212nf MFP Printer?
When it starts scanning the printer only scans the up to the 3rd or 4th page, it stops in the middle of the sheet and produces an error message stating the following: Communication Failure with the scanner.
Are there any steps that may be followed in order to resolve the incident?
Many thanks in advance.
Best regards,
RyanHi @Ryan_HP ,
I see that you are experiencing a communication error during scanning of multiple pages. I would like to help, but I will need some more information to provide you with the correct steps to resolve this issue.
If you are using Windows, download and run the Print and Scan Doctor. It will diagnose the issue and might automatically resolve it. Find and fix common printer problems using HP diagnostic tools for Windows?
Temporarily turn off any Antivirus Software, just to rule out any interference.
Try scanning again.
What operating system are you using?
How to Find the Windows Edition and Version on Your Computer.
Mac OS X: How Do I Find Which Mac OS X Version Is on My Computer?
How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet)
What were the results when you ran the Print and Scan Doctor? (did it print or scan, any error messages)
What scanning software are you using?
Have a wonderful day!
Thank You.

Intermittent Home Button Failure on iPad 1
I bought one of the early iPad “1” 64GB iPads in June 2010 in the Apple store, Belfast. Used for leisure at home and always within a good case it has provided great service since then; that is until loading the pre-iOS 5 download.
It may have been just a coincidence (a point confirmed at the Belfast Apple Genius Bar yesterday) but ever since then my iPad has contracted an intermittent Home Button failure.
Yesterday, after around 6 weeks of hoping that subsequent iOS upgrades would have corrected the fault I finally took the ailing iPad to the Belfast Apple Genius Bar for a hopefully simple resolution. Unfortunately there was none. The two options provided were:
1. Live with it and use the accessibility options which has a floating software-based home button overlaid on the screen; or
2. Pay over £220 for a replacement iPad. – Ouch
That really stung, particularly given the light use the iPad has received compared to the pounding the home buttons on the couple of iPhones I’ve used over the past 3.5 years without failure.
Three questions really:
1. Has anyone else had a similar Home Button failure on an early iPad 1
2. Does anyone have any better solution than forking out for a replacement
3. Could Apple not give their ailing iPads a new lease of life and develop a plug-in home button to fit into the connection socket underneath and clip over the ailing Home Button as an optional override which could also double as an accessibility accessory?IT WORKED!! :)
After growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of responsiveness while both multitasking or simply closing an app, I tried this this little trick rather than taking more extreme measures.
I'm very happy to report that it seems to have worked like a charm!!
The home button works as well as it did when my phone was brand new over a year ago!
THANK YOU Henk B.!! -
Intermittent StgCreateDocfile / StgOpenStorageEx failure
I'm posting this on the hops that someone else has run across this.
I;m trying to get out ahead of this as we've never seen this issue before and with in the last two days we've received a number of failure reports from customers
detailing this problem.
Our legacy application uses structured storage. It's been working well for the last 15 years... (Damn I'm old!)
In that few days we've received reports from customers that they are receiving an error when opening data. The failure occurs when StgOpenStorageEx is called. it returns HRESULT 0x80004002, with error message "Class does not support automation
or does not support expected interface."
Interestingly enough if I try the StgOpenStorageEx call with IID_IPropertySetStorage instead of IID_IStorage it returns an interface.
As noted the same code has been running properly for 15 years. Now we've got several reports of these failures. All appear to have happened on Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, with up to date with Windows Update fixes/patches/updates.
I'd sure appreciate notification if any one else has run across this. It is intermittent.
Thanks for any help.
Here is the code to open the file:
STDMETHODIMP Session::LoadFile(BSTR file)

// go and make the file this is to be...
hr = StgOpenStorageEx(f,

// got a file to write to....
hr = store->OpenStream(OLESTR("Session"), 0, STGM_DIRECT | STGM_READ | STGM_SHARE_EXCLUSIVE, 0, &stream);

hr = Load(stream);
// and release the stream
stream.Release();
if (hr == S_OK) mPath = file;
catch(...)
hr = E_FAIL;
// and be done
store.Release();
else
return hr;
To save the file...

Hi to all, i have a problem with Gnome and D-Bus
Versions:
Arch Release: 0.7.2 Testing
Gnome: 2.14.1-2
D-Bus: 0.61-3
Screenshot explain all:
[URL=http://img366.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gpwned6be.jpg][/URL]1>then i can't promote garnome on this forum??
yeah you can, but not as a solution to gnome related problem in arch. cause this doesn't resolve anything.
2>You don't have to, garnome2.14.2.1(481kb) download the patches and patch it automatically, just change install dir to /usr
(ONLY if you are using console-linux who want gnome a try). of course there is need small arch related patch.(in my experience 0)
eh, i haven't got a clue what this means, putting patches upstream means they will get include in gargnome and upstream releases. i only tried to say we put a lot of our free time in gnome for arch.
2-1>Well said, so choice is the each one's freedom.
and this category isn't arch, this is Desktop Environments,
i installed arch, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEANS I SHOULD USE gnome FROM ARCH!!!
agreed, but again then we won't support your desktop.
ARCH != gnome

my ipod touch has a usb cable picture with an arrow pointing to the itunes logo. the ipod will not connect to a computer and is unable to be turned off as there is no red power slider when the power button is pressed. what can i do to fix this?
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

No scrolling when viewing man pages with Gnome terminal?
Hi all,
I have just installed Oracle Solaris 11 on x86. For a long time I've used Solaris 9 on SPARC. I like the new OS, but I'm having a problem viewing man pages with Gnome terminal. When I view a long man page, e.g., "man newfs", I don't get a functional scroll bar on the right hand side of the window. And although the space bar works to advance the page, when I reach the end, it doesn't return to the command prompt. It just beeps, prints "END", and I can only exit by closing the window. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Suggestions would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Chris TidyIt does sound like you're using "less" instead of more. When you see the "(END)" prompt you can simply type "q" and it will exit back to the command line prompt making it unnecessary to close the window. See the "less" manual page for more detail on the less command. Under Solaris 9 the paging was done with the "more" command. If you set the PAGER environment variiable to "more" the man page will use more and revert to the behavior you'd be used to with Solaris 9. Less erases the text you've already read when you type that final "q" which is a behavior I don't like. I didn't bother to determine if there is a way to fix that with less, I just went back to more. The choice between "more" and "less" is a personal preference.

X1 and USB Port Replicator with digital video - hangs system
Hi
with the X1 to help with docking it everyday at the office I have a USB Port replicator with digital video. I am not using the digital video but the USB ports, head phone and mics plus ethernet.
When I plug it in it detects it OK, I then installed the software. But after reboot it looks to stall when logging into windows, screen flickers back and forth and locks up the operating system. I unlplug it and reboot and window is working fine.
Note as I mentioned I am not using the digital output but instead using an external monitor via the display port on the back of the laptop.
Also its is very slow to boot (Lenovo bios splash screen is there for about a minute)
I have gone into the bios and turned off all other bootable devices just leaving the laptops hard drive.
As a work around I have removed the software and I am getting the basic functionality of the port replicator, but not the ethernet.
I have run the update manager but does not appear to show a need to update the drivers.
Model X1 (1293-CTO)
Windows 7Hi, I have this same exact problem.
Video (anything from youtube to downloaded shows, movies) will freeze for 5-7 seconds at a time. The sound continues to play while the video is 'frozen', and the video resumes after that.
It will happen on its own, with no bumping, but it is more prone to happen if I do something like increase the volume within the media player.
Any suggestions are much appreciated! -
[Solved] Pulse Audio won't work on newly installed system with Gnome
About a year ago I got a new computer and more or less retired my old one with my first arch install. Recently, I decided I would set it up as a Linux system for my sister. I first updated the computer, which broke it royally (since it was last updated before the /bin symlinking happened) but I eventually got it fixed. However, after doing that, Pulse Audio wouldn't work, then I broke X and decided to do a full reinstall.
Now, on this clean install, Pulse is again not working. I have set up Gnome and gdm to work, and everything works great except Pulse. The wiki says that Pulse with Gnome 3 requires no extra setup, so I have not edited conf files at all. I have, however, installed "pulseaudio-alsa", which created this conf file:
# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
hint {
show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
ctl.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
# vim:set ft=alsaconf:
which seems fairly standard. Anyway, I tried removing it and had the same problems. When I have Pulse Audio running and try to play sound, I get the error:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
which is obviously trying for ALSA, or from mplayer:
AO: [pulse] Init failed: Connection refused
Running "pacmd list" nets me:
Daemon not responding.
and pavucontrol gives me:
Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK
when I try to start it.
No pulseaudio commands seem to work (e.g. pulseaudio -k). They don't raise any errors, but also it doesn't have any effect on the server.
The only asound conf file is "/etc/asound.conf", clearing ~/.config/pulse does not fix the issue.
Journalctl does not seem to give anything interesting (Stale PID is the only message when starting Pulse), though admittedly I'm just vgrepping all of journalctl since I don't know how to narrow it down more, nor does the output from pulseaudio -vvvv. There are a lot of errors in pulseaudio -vvvv, but they all appear to be related to loading devices that don't exist, and so I assume not a problem, I can post it if necessary. Sometimes when I kill Pulse the process refuses to go away and I have to reboot in order to clear the process out, but I don't think that's related.
If I kill Pulse or keep it from starting on boot, I can play sound, but only through ALSA, and while I didn't have the problem I expected (I can still play multiple things simultaneously) there's still the issue that the volume buttons in Gnome will no longer work and that the volume levels ALSA reports are basically nonsense to a human being.
I basically just blurbed everything I thought of/found on the wiki or forums, and I'm not really sure where to go from here. It's a fairly old computer, so that could be related, and I'd be willing to dump Pulse if Gnome could integrate well with ALSA, but obviously fixing Pulse would be the preferred option.
Any suggestions on where to look next? I've run out of ideas.
Thanks.

Something would switch PulseAudio to the wrong card and it would just quit after getting itself into a twist. Unsolved, I'm afraid, but have a look at commands such as:
aplay -l
pactl list sinks
pactl stat
(Latter two will need PulseAudio coaxed into life first)
and of course, the Arch wiki.
If there is a conflict, blacklisting kernel modules might also be needed. -
