Internal drives locked - "chflags: command not found"

My Intel MacPro has always had occasional issues with ownership and permissions ever since migrating my home folder from a PowerPC. As this is no longer my primary machine, I unwisely decided to do some tidying up. I have drives in 3 bays and they are all partitioned. In moving some data from one partition to another I encountered "you do not have permission.." so called up the Get Info window, noticed the privileges were set to 'custom' and decided to set this straight. And for the other partitions.
So now every partition has a lock icon except the partition with the OS 10.5.8 on it
Get Info won't allow me to remove the lock or change the privileges
As of today, I now cannot boot from the 10.5.8 partition (no idea why this developed), so have booted from the OSX Install DVD
Running Disk Utility I can verify the 10.5.8 partition ok (all other partitions still are locked) but Verify Disk Permissions returns "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit"
So I read a load of threads here and opened Terminal from the Install DVD and typed
chflags 0 /volumes/*
very carefully
but it says
chflags: command not found
There is insufficient space on the unlocked partition to run an Archive & Install of the OS, and it won't let me install onto any other partition beause they're locked. I was considering booting it in Target Disk Mode - perhaps BatChmod works?

BatChmod might work, but careful on the boot disk.
Open Terminal & paste this in, spaces are important...
chown root /Volumes/
chmod 1777 /Volumes/
then right after the last / of each line, carefully type the name of that external volume, & if it has spaces in it enclose the name in quote marks.
See this User Tip by Niel: I accidentally set a disk's permissions to No Access ...
If the disk in question is your Mac OS X startup disk and your computer stops starting up at the blue screen, restart with the Command and S keys held down, and enter the following commands:
mount -uw /
chown root /
chmod 1775 /
exit
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2240
I think your original permissions problems were likely from already having an account setup on the new Mac before using MA, in that case the old 1st user on the PPC, (501), gets migrated to 502 on the new mac, & so on.

I had a successful installation of 11.5.10 from e delivery but it didn't had the financials modules needed. There is an update for 11.5.10 on edelivery but i was not sure if they had the financials modules in it, so i decided to go for 12i
Can anybody help me with 12i installation or provide me steps how to apply the updates on 11.5.10 if updates have financials in it.

Re: Oracle E-Business Suite R12 Installation on Windows 2003
If you have a VC98, you are using Visual Studio 6. You need to be using Visual Studio 8, and set the Visual Studio directory in Rapidwiz to d:\Tools\MSVS\VC.
The Vision installation of Oracle Applications has had Oracle Financials implemented for the fictitious company Vision Corporation from the beginning, 10.7 I believe, but definitely every 11i release has financials plus every other product licensed. Not all the newest products are fully implemented, but they are licensed.

  • Single user mode . using tail -f (command not found)

Have an empty computer with no systems disk as the installation CD start up  will not go past the grey screen with the rotating logo before the panic crash page comes up and tells me to restart the computer.
Trying to boot into single user mode and then use the command   tail -f  to see contents of some of the logs... BUT I get the reply  tail command not found  ????

If the hard drive is empty, then you can only boot from the CD. Regardless of whether or not it has "tail," it won't do you any good. There are no logs.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to build packages from AUR (build: command not found)

I recently hosed the filesystem on my arch install of ~8 months. I reinstalled arch today and didn't have many problems since I had backups of many important config files. Anyways, I still need to get a few programs installed from AUR, but nothing I get from AUR will build.
I download the tarball, extract into a folder in /home/myuser/builds and then go into that folder and run makepkg -s (as always)
It checks the files and extracts/downloads them. Then I get the following error message:
    ==> Starting build()...
/usr/bin/makepkg: line 741: build: command not found
    ==> ERROR: Build Failed.
    Aborting...
I've run abs and I checked out the abs wiki page, I've also installed base-devel. I am not sure what else I need to do, the error message is not specific enough.
The packages I have been trying to install are      ttf-ms-fonts 2.0-7,      keepass 2.14-2, and I also tried ttf-vista-fonts 1-3. I am fairly certain that it is not a problem with the PKGBUILD files.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

    cyrus wrote:Have you tried Yaourt?
Nope, haven't tried that, I think mainly because I wanted to learn how to use pacman and how to build using ABS. At this point I think I know how to use pacman/abs, as much as this thread might make it appear that I dont
I'll give it a try, as I frequently install software from AUR. In the past I think I let software from the AUR get outdated, Yaourt (clumsy name) sounds like it would help that a bit. Thanks!
Edit: BTW, I really love Arch. I tried it out on a flash drive about 8 months ago (maybe more), and after about 12 hours I was sold and installed it on the drive that Windows XP previously held. Even considering that I had many problems during the initial install, but they were all problems that caused me to learn and were easy to resolve. Seriously, I have lots of Windows tech experience, but only Arch forced me to learn Linux. I had tried Ubuntu previously but it was such a bore, and the problems tended to be hard to find solutions for. I try to convince my other Linux using friends to try arch, but they see it as too hands-on. I don't see it that way, it is very hands off after initial configuration, and the initial config only takes a week or less on the first try and a day and a half (or so) if you re-install. Having backups of your config files is of course a huge deal, and I am glad I had most of those.
Really, I love Arch Linux, it has taught me so much.

I'm trying to get nwn-diamond going, and when I try to build binkplayer I get the error:: line 20: unrar: command not found
So- I think I need to edit my .bashrc but like in this wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Core_Utilities
but I dont really know how to go about doing that. I need a super simple step by step to get me started on something like this.

Okay thank you for the first help, that took care of it, but a new issue is up, When it starts the build I get this error.
I do have a NWN Diamond DVD and it is in the drive- how do I make the builder look to the drive?

    Hi!
After 6 hours of experimenting, disconnecting devices, formatting my hard drive (joy!) and getting nowhere, I found the problem: apparently, Leopard has trouble dealing with some characters in the volume name (in my case it was '). Rename the volume to something simple, short and with no weird characters and the Leopard will install.
And, to Apple: I'm very disappointed with the quality of the Leopard install. If a character is valid in OS X, the setup should support it!
    Best regards,

  • -bash: sudo: command not found

         Hello all,
I have had WAY too many problems with this laptop, and at this point in its miserable little life, I've decided to just wipe the hard drive and start fresh, not caring at all what happens to the files left on there. As previously stated in one of my earlier questions (That was, might I add, never fully answered.), this late 2008 MacBook (aluminum) has a problem where it does not boot up, and just endlessly shows the gray spinning pinwheel. Four months later, that just stops, and now when trying to boot up with my normal startup disk, it brings me right to the Recovery disk and tries to reinstall OS X. I tried, it failed 5 minutes in. So I tried to wipe the hard drive, and it says:  Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn't unmount disk.   I looked it up and I saw that if I went into the Terminal and typed: sudo diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk0 , it would unmount the disk. But whenever I type that, it says: -bash: sudo: command not found. I have no idea how to fix this, and I would really like to be able to use my laptop again without giving somebody my money to do it for me.
                                                 Thanks,
                                                      Luke

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You may then open App Store, click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar, and re-download any OS X upgrade you purchased except Mavericks. Since Yosemite has been released the App Store may not let you re-download Mavericks, but it will let you download Yosemite.

  • Command not found(127) error for all commands

I'm basically having the same problem as the poster in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1376825
Every time I try to run a program like Onyx, it gives me various errors basically indicating that it can't access any of the built-in unix commands like date or ls.
For example, one error I got was
    "AppleScript Error
sh: line 1: date: command not found(127)"
Obviously, its not able to access any of the commands in the /usr/bin folder. However, when I execute date directly from the terminal, it works. My path is echoed as "/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/ActivePerl-5.10 /bin:/usr/local/ActivePerl-5.10/site/bin:/usr/local/soylatte16-1.0.3/bin:/usr/lo cal/php5/bin//Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin:/bin:/sbin:/u sr/bin:/usr/sbin"
The second last entry is /usr/bin.
I even made the folder executable, but it didn't help. There's something seriously wrong with my Mac. A couple of days ago, I filled up the Startup Disk by mistake by torrenting too much. Could that be the source of the problem? Now, spotlight doesn't seem to have an index for the drive, programs are giving errors, and Onyx says the Volume Structure of the drive needs to be repaired.
I have been experimenting with developing, and did mess around with my path setting earlier, but have never faced this problem.

Yes, in an ideal situation, a lot of my hard drive should have been free, but over the years, files build up. And I cannot actually foresee me wasting 15% of my hard disk by keeping it empty. The point of buying more space is that I should be able to use it.
Anyhow, I think 9.5 gb should be fine for basic functioning of the OS right? I don't see why 'date' should require 9.5 gb of free space to carry out its admittedly immense task of returning the current date! And the worst part is, its running correctly from the terminal, so I can't for the life of me figure out why applications can't access it correctly.

  • Nvidia command not found?

Ok, so I'm unsure this belongs here but it seemed like the most approprite section and I'm sorry if it's not.
So I recently reformated my pc to arch and installed the nouveau driver, then I decided I wanted play dota 2 and decided to uninstall nouveau and install nvidia drivers, until now it's all fine and dandy but the problem is I'm trying to run nvidia-xconfig and I get the following error message :
WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.
    sh: pkg-config: command not found
ERROR: Unable to write to directory '/etc/X11'.
and so I'm baffeled, I solved some problems that arose during the format process and post installation of arch using the wiki but I don't know where to go from here about this one.
Thanks for any and all help.

ueah no space before the dash, I installed pkg-config but now I get this warrning:
Unable to locate/open X configuration file.
Package xorg-server was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-server.pc'
    to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
    No package 'xorg-server' found
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
so at least I got the config file, at least trying to solve this problem is turning out to be a bit of a learning experience
edit: still steam is giving me an error about my system not using direct rendering, I tried adding myself to the video group, checking other solutions now
edit 2: ok managed to get that so all that is left is getting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH thing sorted out, any ideas?

I opened the contents of the application and run the shell script for opening aplication there it worked very fine and application started working.. But if i open application directly through launchpad or finder it doesnt show up and console
I tried running those commands in the terminal directly there they work.. But dunno whats wrong in here. and even if try to open the application through the terminal it all opens fine.. what could be the possible problem, is it with my mac..?

i finally figured out the problem.. it is with the environmental variables.  the path for all those commands like "grep" is not being set for the GUI applications.  that is why i got that error.
for those GUI applications which require path, we have to set path in the file /etc/launchd.conf  the environmental variables set in here are used by the gui applications and those which are launched through spotlight.
that file may bot be present in most of the macs. No problem even if not present,we can create one and use.
    so  type in terminal
              $ sudo vi /etc/launchd.conf
and in the editor add these lines
              setenv PATH = /new/path
and save.  Note: replace /new/path with the path which you need to have for the commands used in the script.
remeber that you need to restart your mac for applications to use these environmental variables.
