Internal hard drive stops working (OS 10.6)

Hi all,
I was working on my 2009 MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with a number of windows open (Chrome, Word, Mail, Preview), but nothing really heavy. All of a sudden all the pages in Chrome went blank, Word documents would only open blank, and the icons in all Finder windows were blank. I tried to back up some important stuff that I hadn't had a chance to backup since last week, but the machine would not reconize my USB key or my WD external drive, also USB. I tried to shutdown the computer, but it would not properly shut down. I forced it down by holding the power button. After letting it sit about 10 minutes, I restarted it, only to get a folder with a question mark in it. I then tried to choose a startup disk by restarting and holding down the option-key. No luck. No disk was recognized. Then I restarted it and booted from the Snow Leopard install disk, holding down the C-key. I opened Disk Utility, but it did not find my hard drive among the disks connected to the computer, only the OS 10.6 install DVD. I have since shut down the computer and do not know what to do. I have done a lot of work that is not backed up, unfortunately, and would really appreciate any help with this issue.
Does anyone have any idea what could have happened and why it happened out of the blue?
I am running the latest update of Snow Leopard. The machine has worked pretty well in the past and nothing has happened to put the HD at risk; no falls, spills, or anything like that. I have written everything I know/remember about the issue and the machine, but please ask if I can provide further information in order to solve the problem.
I have an appointment at the Genius Bar in a few days, but I need to recover the information on the disk...(!) Have I lost everything?
Thanks!
Edit: [I forgot to mention that before restarting it while pressing the option-key, I reset the PRAM. Same result, though. Didn't work.]

Hmm... Since your macbook won't recognize it right now, I would reccomend that your remove the hard drive and connect it through your external HDD's connection... Which external drive do you have? I have a Seagate Go Flex in which I can remove the Connector that attaches the external HDD and I can use it to connect any hard drive with a Standard SATA connection.... This might be something you could try... If you ultimate goal is to recover certain files.... That is strange that it won't detect the Hard Drive..... unfortunately that usually means that the drive has failed.... It's happened to a number of my SSD's.... Good Luck... If your wondering what I was speaking of with the Seagate Go flex you can always YOUTUBE it, there are some good videos on how to do this... also if you have a Hard Drive reader that converts from Sata to USB you could also use that....

  • My macbook hard drive stopped working and I loaded another hard drive and can access time capsule but it doesn't show any of my old files and I don't understand why

My 7 year old macbook hard drive stopped working and I put in another hard drive but when I went to restore my information from airport time capsule it only shows today and nothing older.  Help?

Did you do a TM backup after you installed the disk? It may write over the previous backup.. but it should actually start a new one.
Read the info about using migration.. see http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Or the Mac is probably looking at the backup as from a different computer.
See the details of how to use TM to restore to a different Mac.
    Q17 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I would read through 14-17 carefully.
You should be able to do a full recovery of the TM backup to a USB drive plugged into the computer.

  • Why does dying internal hard drive stop you booting from external hd

Why do I need an internal hard drive if I am booting from an external drive? Doesnt make sense,
Disk Utility warned me that the internal hard drive is failing. I have managed to change start up disks. I have an external bootable drive and even have an empty partition on it, "just in case" I need to install a brand new OS, but here I am waiting for local disks, and I cant access my back-up OS.
Why doesnt OSX just move past the dying faulty hard drive and get to work on the bootable disk? Basically here I am supposedly doing all the right things to cover for an emergency - I may as well have no backup strategy.
Am I missing a step, or is this how OSX works. Perhaps if you read the steps and outcomes below, you can see if there is more I need to do?
If I press "option" at start up, it only shows the internal drive, not recognising the external bootable drive.
fsck -f produced a looping "missing thread" message that went on for an hour or more so I stopped that.
I tried the dvd and command-c at start up, got through to the installer window and when I selected disk utility it hung, but no spinning ball, just nothing was happening.
The next attempt with th DVD i changed start up disk, this time it saw the external bootable drive and I thought I was in business again.
And here I am full circle, waiting for local disks.
    Any thoughts most welcome.
btw, does the SMART issue a warning of a failing drive because a drive is definitely unsalvagable due to a mechanical fault? or is there a chance my drive is physiclly healthy but shows as Failing because it has unbelievable directory issues that Apple tools cannot solve - but DW could?

The Bombich forums have helped me troubleshoot the integrity of the bootable volumes on my external hard drive which I made using Carbon Copy Cloner. The clones are fine ie after I reset nvram after booting up via command-alt-o-f, the clones are now recognised when I boot up-alt. So it seems that there was nothing wrong with the bootable volumes on the external drive per se.
However, the Powerbook will still not boot up past "Waiting for local disks".
As it stands now, nobody seems to be able to give a reason why I cannot bypass the failed internal hard drive. I found a Knowledge base article from Apple saying Cmd-Alt-shift-delete at start-up should skip you to the next working volume hitched up to your computer, but that didn't work either.
I have a new internal HDD coming, so prior to installing it, the final part of the troubleshoot will be to reboot the PB without an internal HDD. I will see what happens and see what conclusions can be drawn from that. Unless anyone has a clue now from what I have posted?

  • Pavilion g6 internal hard drive not working , Can I use WD internal hard drive ?

    I have pavilion g6 series laptop . I don't know RPM .
HP internal hard drive is looking very costly.
Can you tell me whether I can use WD internal hard drive or not . If yes then How much RPM hard drive I need to buy?

    Hi,
We won't concern about RPM, faster (more rpm) is better. The HDD's are much, much, much, much cheaper now. They were more expensive during a flood in Thailand few yours back. Yes, you can use WD HDD for your computer. You can pick one from the following list:

  • External hard drive stopped working, won't load

    Hi There,
I have a LaCie external hard drive and I have tons of files on it. It all of a sudden stopped working. It is still getting power, but it won't connect with a computer. No warnings popup but it doesn't load. I've tried it with firewire and usb as well as on a powerbook g4 labtop and an iMac g4. Any suggestions on how to get to the files? Thanks

Welcome to Discussions - The power brick, even though it seems to be working, may be shot. Try using a brick from another drive and see if that will allow the drive to mount.

This is twice that this has happened now. Before it was running for about 20 days before this happened. It has only been 2 days now since then, and it appears to have happen again. I have the earlier /var/log/messages.log as well if needed.

I know that this isn't of any help, but I've encountered a similar problem lately. This thread with no replies should have been updated to include some of the information you provide: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=52354
I'm also using a Seagate, more precisely a Barracuda 7200.11 320GB. If the computer is left for a long time, for example over night, it now tends to freeze hard when I then start up some program. The output I get after a restart is pretty similar to yours. I haven't been able to figure out how to from a terminal check and correct the disk, but as can be seen by the thread above running the installation Arch-CD repairs the partitions.
I don't really use it as a server so I decided not to let it run inactive for such long periods of time. I've checked the hard-drive with SeaTools and it gives the drive green light. In rare occasions is doesn't load after GRUB (happened twice), but I don't know if that unresponsiveness has something in common with the freezing described above. I've checked stability of CPU and RAM as well and it does pass.
Another strange thing also happens if I first start up Fedora 7 64-bit on the system and then restart. The file system doesn't get corrupted, so that's good, but the boot process doesn't complete and then simply hangs with complaints and unfinished USB device configurations. That issue looks even more odd to me and I've never encountered such problems before.
I've no idea what the problem is. Could it even be a kernel issue, some new I/O instructions making my system "confused"? By the way the system in question has another chipset, a nVidia nForce 570. This is beyond the territory of my brain.

  • External hard drive stops working with AP Extreme after Time machine touches it

    *sigh*
    Ok.
I had a 1.5TB external HD connected to my Airport Extreme (henceforth to be known as APE) working fine, albeit with unexpected slow transfer speeds....not the point. Moving along.
Updated to 7.6.1 firmware. Ugh. I wish apple would have their standard idiot mode plus an advanced option.
    Getting to the point.
I decide that im going to try Time Machine but there is no way that im going to try doing the inital backup over wireless. I disconnect the external hard drive from the APE and connect to my computer start the backup and decide encryption is a good idea. Turns out, bad idea as it puts some kind of encryption on the whole volume not just an image which i assumed it would do. I  decide that this time machine idea is stupid and wonder why the **** its trying to backup 130GB of data after i excluded a lot of data. Anyway. I remove the time machine data, do into disk utility and remove the encryption and plug it back up the the APE.
No dice. The drive will not load at all on the APE and i believe it has something to do with some funky timemachine encryption voodoo. I want to avoid formatting this drive.
    So.
    Help?

I reformatted and its now working.
    *Ugh*

  • External hard drive stopped working on Mac after attempt to connect it to a PC

I have an external hard drive that is new and has been working beautifully.  It is formatted for a Mac.  Forgetting this, I tried to plug it into a PC. Of course it didn't work, but now when I try to plug it into my Mac it doesn't mount. How can I fix it?

Try repairing it, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.

  • My external hard drive stopped working so I had a tech fix it by moving it to another case since the power supply is in the case. It was working fine till I started getting these messages saying USB over current device, my USB is drawing too much power.

I need to know how to rehabilitate the hub since it gets deactivated as soon as I plug the external drive. By the way the drive contains important information

Buy a drive or drive case that is not bus powered.
Look for help in MacBook Pro forums.

  • Installed new internal hard drive, not working

Hello everyone. I have an iMac model # A1224. My hard drive crashed, therefore I purchased this one:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0S02860/
I have installed it and when I turn it on I get the gray screen with a blinking question mark. Anyone have any idea why it would do this with my new hard drive. Thank you.

Well, did you reinstall the operating system? If not, yes, you're going to get a blinking question mark, because the Mac doesn't have a system to boot from! You need to use your Mac's installation DVD or a newer retail version of OS X to either install a new clean system, or recover from any Time Machine backup you may have.

  • Internal Hard Drive not working.

Hi, I have recently purchased a Seagate 1TB SSHD. I have plugged it into my computer, but it doesn't show up in the BIOS. However, it is recognised by Windows in Disk Management, but it says: 'Unknown, not Initialized.' Any idea of how I can fix this?
    I have a MSI H81M-E33 motherboard.

    Hi JangusAFC,
The BIOS at the hardware layer and Windows management information depend on the hardware present information, therefore you must did not found the hard disk option in correct
menu. You can refer your hardware manual or ask your hardware vendor for the further help.

  • Why is my hard drive not working?

My hard drive stopped working suddenly. I was burning a disc and it only burned 1 image and quit. I tried putting a new disc in and it tried reading it and spit it out. It was a brand new blank DVD.

Have you done any troubleshooting such as restarting the computer and if so what were the results.

  • I'm an avid Mac enthusiast who works in a creative field. However, I simply cannot afford a new Mac after my old one's internal hard drive failed. Can anyone recommend an affordable Mac option? I don't want to consider a non-Apple product.

Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.

  • No internal hard drives seem to work! Please help!

    Hello,
I'm really hoping someone can help with this as I am losing my mind! I wanted to upgrade the internal hard drive of my 2009 Macbook Pro from the stock 250GB to a 500GB. The first try was with a Western Digital Scorpio Black (7200 RPM), the second try was with a Hitachi 5400 RPM, and the last try was with a Hitachi 7200 RPM. None of these have worked. I first noticed the problems when trying to perform a backup. Both Time Machine and SuperDuper would fail. When I tried the first drive, the OS loaded fine. But after install, the system lagged really bad. Opening applications would take much longer than they had before and even opening new windows, writing files and such seemed to cause the system to choke. Removing the hard drive and running from an external enclosure produced the same results. The drive checked out in Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. So at this point, I assumed there was something wrong with the drive. Fast forward to the second drive...At first, everything seemed fine except that I was not able to complete a backup via Time Machine or SuperDuper. However, now I was having a rough time even getting the OS installed with the drive in the computer or plugged in via an enclosure. I tried using the restore disks, a retail copy of 10.6, and a disk image of 10.6 as well. On the off chance that the OS did install completely, the system would revert back to its laggy behavior. I just thought I had EXTREMELY bad luck and purchased another drive. Same results across the board.
During attempts at backups, the system would lock up and I would have to to a hard shutdown. After that, Disk Warrior would usually find a boatload of errors to fix. But it would successfully repair.
I should also mention that I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB as well. In fact, I suspected a RAM issue, so I even bought an extra set of a different brand! The first set was from RamJet and the next was Patriot RAM. In addition, I tried using single RAM sticks; one in each bay at different times.
The laptop is at the Apple Store now. But the "genius" thinks it's a bad hard drive! I tried explaining to him that this was the THIRD hard drive to go in and that the one that was in worked perfectly when using it to boot up an iMac. I did ask him to replace the SATA cable as well thinking that maybe something might be wrong with that. But at the same time, the computer had its issues while the hard drive was in an external enclosure as well. Could it be that these newer Macbook Pro's are just really picky about what drives go in? Or am I looking at some other strange problem? Everything was working just fine before the attempted upgrade.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Assuming that you've already tried the brightness controls, you can try an SMC and PRAM resets.
