Invalid Character in XML document
Hello,
I'm parsing an XML document using Apache SAX parser implementation, and I got the Exception below.
After looking around, I found that it happened cause by the symbol " " in one of the element.
How should I handle this? Thanks in advance for the help.
<Unexpected exception (org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Invalid byte 2
of 2-byte UTF-8 sequence.). Restarting parsing process in 4 minute(s).>
org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Invalid byte 2 of 2-byte UTF-8 sequence.

Let's say the data provided said that they "can't do
anything about it". What do you suggest I should
handle this problem when it occurs again sometimes in
the future?
Thanks for the help.Are you aware of the "Garbage in, garbage out" principle?
That said, if the data is only slightly garbaged-up, and if you really can't get the source to provide non-garbage data, then you'd have to implement a transformation process to take the data in the raw (not thru an XML API, as remember it is malformed to begin with) and produce a well-formed XML piece of data from it. Then operate on the latter.

Hi,
I'm trying to parse this public comment feed, which had been working until recently -
http://www.ntia.doc.gov/broadbandgrants/btopcomments.xml
- when I started getting this error -
"An error occured while Parsing an XML document. An invalid XML character (Unicode: 0x14) was found in the element content of the document."
I'm trying to strip out the character using this replace command, but it doesn't seem to be working.
XMLText = rereplace(XMLText, chr(14),"","ALL");
Any ideas?
thanks!EDIT: You can ignore this one, I think! I was typing my response and didn't see your recent post until after I submitted. I'll leave it in case the curly quote details help at all.
Hi, Wingo,
I was able to get the feed to parse without the Base64 sections but I think of that more as a trouble-shooting step than a solution because I wanted to see if there was an odd character (or more) in these elements.
A perusal skimmed the ATOM documents this morning related to Base64 (if I recall from reading the feed, it was an ATOM feed and not an RSS feed) at http://www.atomenabled.org/developers/syndication/atom-format-spec.php, indicates there should not be any issues with Base64 content in the feed.
I also tested the feed with a PHP ATOM parser this morning. I just wanted to see if another server-side language could do it. Nope! PHP threw an invalid character at line 1243. Of course, the line number PHP/ColdFusion see does not necessarily match what we see when we copy the XML into a new file.
After testing the feed with PHP, I downloaded the feed XML again (in case it was updated since I messed with it the other day) and started to check in the area around this line number. I saw something of potential interest: a lot of instances of what I think are curly quotes in the document.
Search for the test "inherently competing definitions of". Immediately following the word "of " are two funny symbols and then the words 'public interest'. If looks almost like someone had curly quotes around these words and, I believe, curly quotes can cause issues in XML parsing. A document search for this 'character' revealed many of them, all in places that look like a curly quote would go (they were typically in long blocks of text.
Sorry not to be of more help but maybe this (the curly quotes) will get things rolling... -
XML invalid character - a single quote problem
Hi, I am reading in an xml file, then write the file to output. The problem is that the input file has a strange single quote character [ ** ] - lets call it single quoate A, which is different from [ *'* ] , that is the key next to the [ ; ] key on an English keyboard - lets call it single quate B. And in fact there isnt a key to input single quote A, I guess the appearance of single quote A is due to encoding.
If I open the input xml file in browser, it works ok and displays the single quote A.
Once I read in the xml file into memory, by debugging I can still see that single quote A is corrected encoded;
However once I rewrite the same content to output, the single quote A character is changed, and if i open the file in browser, it says 'invalid character' because single quote A were changed when written to output and cannot be rendered.
Both input and output xml are using UTF-8 encoding. How can I solve this problem please?
The xml file looks:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<content>....1980s (Peacock and Williams, 1986; Keay, 1984)</content> My code for reading
String _xquery ="//content/text()";
Document _xmlDoc= DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance().newDocumentBuilder().parse("myxml.xml");
XPath _xpath = XPathFactory.newInstance().newXPath();
NodeList nodes = (NodeList) _xpath.compile(query).evaluate(_xmlDoc, XPathConstants.NODESET);
List<String> res = new ArrayList<String>(nodes.getLength());
for (int i = 0; i < nodes.getLength(); i++) {
res.add(nodes.item(i).getNodeValue());
String valueToOuput=res.toString() //this is the value to be output to xml, it shoud look like "[....1980s (Peacock and Williams, 1986; Keay, 1984)]"my code for writing xml
Element root=new Element("root");;
Element content= new Element("output-content")
content.setText(valueToOutput);
root.addContent(content);
PrintWriter writer = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter(f));
new XMLOutputter().output(domDocument, writer);
writer.close();Hi, sorry I have fixed the problem... instead of using PrintWriter, I used Fileoutputstream, and it solved the problem. Thanks!

XML Publisher Report ends with Warning -- Invalid Character Error in XML
Hi,
I have migrated the standard report 'Invoice Print Selected Invoices' from Reports 6i to XML Publisher. It has to print a Euro(€) in the report. It does not even generate the XML File fully. It gives the below error in the XML File. When i remove the special character, it works fine.
Please let me know the settings to ensure that XML file also accepts the special characters. How do i get the Euro symbol printed in XML File with out giving Invalid Character Error?

I have gone thru the Document 222663.1 and it says that the Developer 6.0.8.23 is required to handle this problem. We are using almost the updated Developer version i.e., Developer 6.0.8.25. So, this should be handled automatically, but it still errors out. Please suggest.

LPX-00217 invalid character error - Using reference characters in XML file
Hi, I hope you will help me to understand and to fix the error I get during insert of an XML file into a table with XML Type field.
I used Oracle documentation for this:
1. Create table
CREATE TABLE XMLDOC
( XMLCOLUMN xmltype);
2. Create external directory
CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY FILESDIR AS 'E:\ora_xml_test\';
3. Create function
CREATE OR REPLACE function DSS.getClobDocument(
filename in varchar2,
charset in varchar2 default NULL)
return CLOB deterministic
is
file bfile := bfilename('FILESDIR',filename);
charContent CLOB := ' ';
targetFile bfile;
lang_ctx number := DBMS_LOB.default_lang_ctx;
charset_id number := 0;
src_offset number := 1 ;
dst_offset number := 1 ;
warning number;
begin
if charset is not null then
charset_id := NLS_CHARSET_ID(charset);
end if;
targetFile := file;
DBMS_LOB.fileopen(targetFile, DBMS_LOB.file_readonly);
DBMS_LOB.LOADCLOBFROMFILE(charContent, targetFile,
DBMS_LOB.getLength(targetFile), src_offset, dst_offset,
charset_id, lang_ctx,warning);
DBMS_LOB.fileclose(targetFile);
return charContent;
end;
And now appears the problem when I use different character references - one of them are parsed by the XML parser and another -are not:
test1.xml - Contains a charachter from Latin language -ă (ă)

Please help!!!Which database version are you using and what is the characterset used during its creation...?
There is a lot on this forum which has been already answered / addressed but the database must support it, in other words the characterset must support it. Among others, see Re: XML-Document with special characters for instance.
Conversion like you are doing (ă) is not needed. -
Error parsing document index: invalid character in attribute value
Hi,
I am working on an eBook with iBook Author. Once in a while, after I finish working, and want to reopen my eBook a few hours or days after I get the error:
'title' could not be opened
Error parsing document index: invalid character in attribute value
I have to go back to an old backup I always do before quitting.
What is the reason of this error message and anyw ay to fix/repair it on a version I just saved?
Thanks,
JP.Hello,
I have the same error, but for me the above solution did not work.
Did I understand correctly? This is what I did:
1. I changed the extension of the IBA file in ZIP
2. I unzipped the file
3. in the folder with the unzipped book I have changed the file index.xml in index.html
4. I zipped it all back (in a ZIP file)
5. I renamed the extension ZIP archive in IBA
6. I tried to open the book and I got the error that there was no index.xml file
7. I changed the extension of the IBA and in ZIP
8. I unzipped the file again
9. I changed back index.xml to index.html and I zipped it back (compressed it)
10. I renamed the extension ZIP archive in IBA
11. I opened the book
Is this correct?
The problem is that I am still receiving the same error message: Error parsing document index: invalid character in attribute value
Did I do something wrong?
If you can help I would be very greatfull, I worked hard on this book and it is the only backup that I have saved.
Thank you! -
XI XML Parser: tag content with "'", single apostrophe: invalid character
Hi all,
we import XML-documents with the file adapter in a sender channel. everything works well.
But if one of the XML-tag contents contains a single apostrophe ( ' ), then the XML parser stops with an error "An invalid character was found inside an entity reference. ". The message can not be processed. If I test the message content in the mapping -> no error.
When the single apostrophe is dereferenced by an additional single apostrophe the XML-File can be processed.
Question: does anybody know how this can be handled because it is not very nice of SAP XI to send single apostrophes in outgoing messages but cannot handle it in incoming messages from other systems? special adapter settings?
Thank you very much

ORA-00911:invalid character when loading an XML doc to the XMLType column
We have followed this code snippet: http://www.oracle.com/technology/sample_code/tech/java/codesnippet/xmldb/Example_Code.html#createclob
using the CLOB object to load an XML Document which has more 4000 characters to the XMLType column, we got the error -- ORA-00911:invalid character.
Sound likes an encoding issue? any suggestions would be appreciated.
BTW, we're able to use the TopLink's mapping -- Direct-to-Field to insert an XML String (<4000 characters) to the XMLType column.
Thanks!Try removing the semi-colon at the end of your statement. That is the cause of ORA-911 with DBMS_SQL.PARSE and EXECUTE IMMEDIATE, I don't see why ADO should be any different.

XML Publisher Report - Invalid character was found in text content
Hi Techies,
Version Background
Oracle apps : 11.5.10
Oracle 9i Database
Oracle Reports 6i
I created a XML output type concurrent program and attached a data definition & template to it.
My program completed with status "Warning".
The Error is : An invalid character was found in text content.
Then i downloaded the XML and opened it in notepad++. I found there are 2 weird characters like this ( , )
FYI, It is a non-Ascii character so not able to paste it in this forum text field. the characters looks like double sided arrow and a forward arrow.
I also tried loading the XML locally from RTF Template. Again it throws me same error
Error No: -1072896760: An invalid character was found in text content.
Additional Information:
Data is coming from table "gl_alloc_batches.description"
Encoding Type: UTF-8
Please Help me how to handle such a non-ascii characters

The Folder Path "My Documents contains an Invalid Character"
Hello.
I have a major problem at hand.
I presently have iTunes 7.6 on my Dell laptop
when i try installing itunes 7.7 or 7.7.1, it gives an error
"The folder path my documents contains an invalid character"
I scoured the internet, but to no avail...
Please help
Sometime back, the name of My Documents have been changed to "id" by mistake
Then itunes 7.6 also wasnt working.. Then i went to the registry and changed all the folder paths, and then it was working....
So, please help...
Thanks!If the same problem occurs in another account, it suggests the message is misleading and the problem is not with My Documents itself.
That is unless you have changed the path c:\Documents and Settings which is common to all accounts.
It sounds as though there is a registry key set with corrupt information somewhere that you haven't found yet.
Something you could try is a complete removal of iTunes according to the following method. I have also included instructions for installer clean up which you should do if one of the uninstalls fails. I am guessing that the iTunes uninstall might fail with a similar message.
== uninstall with cleanup ==
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
XP
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
Vista
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete and file or folder called Quicktime.
Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
If it does, install iTunes.

I am trying to download the latest iTunes update; keep getting error message that says "The folder path 'My Documents' contains an invalid character". This also happens when I try to uninstall iTunes. HELP!
OK, never mind! I saw another question on the right side that addressed the problem, and it worked perfectly! Went to Major Geeks' page, downloaded the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, and was able to reinstall the updated version of iTunes! This community is super!

Hi guys,
I am new of iBooks Author and I am not HTML code savvy (expect the very basics). I have to send an iBooks for an University exam and I can't open my file anymore.
I was working on it since Saturday, I saved many times and I have quit the iBooks Author and rebooted my iMac few moments ago. There were no crashes.
The project is a iBook with pictures, videos and some Tumult Hype animations. It is 248Mb.
Now I can't open the file (but I can see it in quick view). The error message is in the subject, but here it is again:
"Progetto iBooks" couldn't be opened. Error parsing document index: invalid character in attribute value.
Now, I have to send the project today (here in Italy it is now 7:10 am) and so I am kind of desperate.
Any suggestion?
I am already working on making a new ibook, but if someone could give me a workaround to fix it and open it on iBooks I would be extremely grateful.
Best regards,
SebastianoHi Sebastiano,
Did you ever get any answer? I have the same problem and now have to work from an old version again (good thing I had backup one manually!)
Thx

XML Document Insert fails : NULL is an invalid
Hi,

In my input XML document I have columns corresponding to the processId (primary
key) and transactionHeader. But I don't any xml tags for the remaining columns.
In the OracleSaveXML java API I am setting which columns should be inserted or
updated :
OracleXMLSave save = new OracleXMLSave(_conn, DB_TABLE_NAME);
save.setIgnoreCase(true);
// default Oracle Date format is 'MM/dd/yyyy HH:mm:ss' . See JDBC
documentation on
// java.text.SimpleDateFormat to get the list of valid date formats.
// save.setDateFormat(java.lang.String mask);
String[] columnNames = new String[3];
columnNames[0] = IM_PRIMARY_KEY;
columnNames[1] = TRANSACTION_HEADER_COLUMN_NAME;
String[] keyColumnNames = new String[2];
keyColumnNames[0] = IM_PRIMARY_KEY;
save.setUpdateColumnList(columnNames);
save.setKeyColumnList(keyColumnNames); // ignored in the case of insert and
delete
if(isNew()) {
save.insertXML(oraXmlStr);
} else {
save.updateXML(oraXmlStr);
Can somebody tell me whether this approach is o.k. ?

Jaxp fails to unmarshall xml document if it contaions the "&" character
Hi,
We are using JAXB in our applications and have recently experienced a problem
with parsing of xml document ( when calling unmarshall method of jaxb ). The problem occurs
when the xml element contains the character & in it f.eks. "Hennes & Maiurets" then it fails to parse
the xml document. We would be very greatful if you could suggest us any workaround.
Thanks in advance
SazzadulThat's because it's not an XML document. A well-formed XML document cannot contain the & character by itself in a text node, it must be escaped as &. XML parsers will do this automatically, but if you are producing your own XML via ordinary string output, you have to handle this escaping yourself. And the same goes for the other four markup characters.
