Inventory VMware
Our current VM infrastructure runs on VMware. I'm curious if anyone knows of a way to inventory the ESXi Hosts. I realize the SCCM Client wouldn't actually install on ESX to inventory directly, but the client does install on the windows server
which runs vCenter, and vCenter has all of the host details. Is there a way to get that information into SCCM?
I know there is the v_GS_VIRTUAL_MACHINE view in the database, and it seems to list some information like Physical Host, but only for Hyper-V systems.
Has anyone been able to get this to work? My guess would be that if the vCenter information were in a WMI class that a MOF edit could be made to get it into inventory. It would be nice to get information like what physical host a VM is running
on, what are it's hardware specs, and possibly other details.
Last I heard (which granted, was over a year ago) there was no way that a client could tell you "i'm on ESX Host called "ServerBob"". and you are right, v_gs_virtual_machine is only for hyper-v--because hyper-v clients will offer that information (VMware
clients don't)
That said... since you suspect the information is in vCenter, where on that system is recorded "and here are my clients, these clients are these specific computers in Active Directory called ..." The last I heard about that (querying that) I wasn't
encouraged about 'the where' for that information--it was made to sound like it was virtually impossible to pull out. Of course; the main problem was I don't have any rights to the ESX Hosts here, to poke around and find the information.
You could try to approach VMware yourself; and see what they say. Although perhaps instead of asking them "how to I get this information using ConfigMgr Inventory", what you need to ask is something like... "I would like a Powershell script to enumerate
that information". <wink> Once we have the powershell script; then possibilities open up.
Standardize. Simplify. Automate.

SCCM Inventory (Vmware/Vcores/Esxi)
Hello All,
We're looking into using SCCM as (one) of the main sources of information that will be used for a software asset management reporting tool. One of the key elements for getting an accurate license position is to not only determine what you have installed
but also what the hardware beneath the virtualization layer consist of.
I assume it's impossible to determine with SCCM (certainly in the non-hyper-v area) what the hardware of the underlying host is.
Would other tricks as connecting VMM to vcenter deliver extra 'inventory' information to SCCM or would the above requirement lead to a connector from the reporting tool to for example vcenter to read out host data and do the vm host <> blade linking....?First, a (major) correction: Hyper-V is absolutely a (type 1) bare metal hypervisor.
Next, ConfigMgr is not a CMDB. As mentioned, ConfigMgr manages OSes. It does not manage hardware. The hardware information that ConfigMgr has is because the OS exposes that information. OSes within guest virtual machines do not know or have visibility into
their underlying hypervisor and thus ConfigMgr has no way of knowing anything.
As for VMM, there is no real connection between VMM and ConfigMgr. Just to say it one more time, ConfigMgr manages OS instances. VMM manages hypervisors and virtual hosts. The two are complimentary, but do not overlap in purpose or functionality.
Finally, the webcast I just presented last week in conjunction with Secunia showed how to use custom DDRs to pull information from any system, like vSphere and add that informatin to ConfigMgr for this exact scenario (I'm not sure if the recording has been
posted yet or not though).

Installing Inventory only agent on VMWare ESXi
Hello,
did anybody manage to install the Inventory-only-Agent (V 11.2.3) on a
VMWare ESXi 5.1-Server? We would like to collect the inventory data for
our CMDB. When i start the installation i get the follwoing errors:
/tmp # ./zenumia-install.sh -s mycollectionserver
Collection Server is mycollectionserver
installing zenumia to /opt/novell/zenworks/umia
../zenumia-install.sh: line 188: arch: not found
unrecognized OS, not setting SIPLATFORM
OS tagged as unknown, sysinfo package is mcsysinfo-noui-10-.sh
../zenumia-install.sh: line 223: whoami: not found
user is
Must be root to install. Aborting install.
So there are some needed commands like "whoami" missing and the OS ist
unknown.
I tried to collect the inventory data via a Discovery task, but the
collected information is quite poor. No vendor-specific Hardware info, etc.
Kind regards,
ThomasThomas,

Inventory Standalone VMware 3.0.2 host
Has anyone managed to inventory a 3.0.2 ESX standalone host with MAPS 9?
Works ok with version 5 and 5.1 hosts according to the documentation should scan ESX.
Scan does not give any results back. I can logon through web access and /mob page
Is there a logfile i can check?
ThanksMAP uses the web services API from VMware, and I believe that was available in the 3.x versions of the hypervisor. You could try turning on trace2 logging which will give you A LOT of information and hopefully the answer. Since Trace2 logging can be overwhelming
in terms of the information you get, it is best to work with a fresh database and new log file and to only target 1 machine. This will keep the information to a manageable level.
To get the detailed log, follow these instructions:
1. With MAP closed, rename the existing MAP log file which is located in "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\MAP\MapToolkit.log" if the default path was used during installation. It is recommended that you include a number or date when renaming so that you
can keep the logs in order if you have to do this again.
2. Open Notepad as Administrator
3. Open "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\MAP\Logging.cfg" in Notepad
4. Change the line that says “.default=Info” to read “.default=Trace2”
5. Save and close the file
6. Open MAP (this creates a new log file)
7. Go to File > Select a Database
8. In the window that opens, select the radio button called “Create an inventory database” and enter a name
9. Click ok
10. On the Overview page in MAP, click on “Perform an inventory”
11. In the inventory wizard, on the Inventory Scenario page, choose only VMware and nothing else.
12. Choose "Manually enter computer names and credentials" as the discovery method. Do not choose another discovery method.
13. Enter the needed credentials in "All Computers Credentials".
14. On the manual entry wizard page, make sure you select "Use All Computers credential list" and finish the wizard
15. Once the inventory has completed, exit MAP
16. Open Logging.cfg is the same manner as before and change it back to “.default=Info”

Start Guest OS Automatically through VMware Server 2 Web Console
Hi All,
Does anyone know how to get the guest OS to automatically start/stop when VMware starts/stops? The user's manual says to click on Edit Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown Settings, but that link is not there for me under the Commands tab. I also upgraded this from Hardware v4 to v7. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated, because when my VMware server restarts, I cannot get it to automatically start the virtual machines.
Reference from the User's Manual:
Enabling System-Wide Startup and Shutdown Settings
You can enable virtual machines to be started and shut down automatically and configure how and when virtual machines are started and shut down.
To enable system-wide startup and shutdown settings
1 Select the host in the Inventory panel.
2 In the Commands section of the host Summary tab, click Edit Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown Settings.
This is within the VMware Server 2 user's guide under Managing Your VMware Server -> Configuring Virtual Machine Startup and Shutdown SettingsHi Paul,
I see now what you mean. You have to select the host for the entire system, not the guest OS. That's what confused me.
Didn't previous versions have a link on there to define how the startup of the specific guest OS functioned?
Chris -
So I've just installed VMware Workstation 11 and when I try to start it , it does not start
this is the content of the log file
Can anyone help me out ?

Please help me to resolve this problem. The message says "contact Oracle support." Why didn't you?
Because, I presume, you know that you are trying to create a totally unsupported environment.
Throw away the VMWare, go to Oracle VM on Oracle Enterprise Linux and you will find a much happier experience.
Happier too because RAC on Windows is not a pretty sight when it comes to transparent failover.
But please help me out with some of what you posted
1. Did you run the cluster verify tool? Post the full results
2. Did you create VIPs?
3. Can you ssh unchallenged between the two machines? -
Tape drive and pci-x card with Solaris 10 on VMWare environment
I have a Sun X4170 server (x84_64) running VMWare ESXi 4.0. On it I have two VM guests- my production file server running Solaris 10 U7 and a test file server running Solaris 10 U9.
The X4170 has a PCI-X LSI Logic dual external U320 parallel scsi card. I have a tape drive + auto loader cabled to the X4170. It is a Quantum branded autoloader but I believe the tape drive itself is HP. The autoloader+tape drive share a single SCSI ID (6) but have separate LUNS.
I have two choices for making this system accessible to the OS:
- Virtualize the tape drive and loader individually.
- In VMWare, enable the scsi card as a pass through device. The SCSI card is then added as PCI device to the virtual machine (actually two devices since it is a dual scsi card.)
I had virtualized a single-drive tape drives with Vmware in the past.
However, when I tried I virtualize tape drive and loader, Solaris complained about the scsi id’s being invalid. I don’t think it likes two devices with a single scsi ID. Also, I think I need the backup software to see the REAL tape drive and autoloader (for inventory, changing tapes etc)

Running “devfsadm –v “ does not change anything
Any ideas? Maybe a need to update the MPT driver or is that dangerous?
ThanksActually, updating the kernel patches (and enabling hot plug service) did solve the problem. At some point during between testing the system before and after patching, the tape drive got turned off. Since the system patching was being done remotely it was not immediately obvious that the tape drive was off.

Can I delete VMWare Fusion files with .vmdk extension?
Please forgive my complete ignorance on this topic. I just started using VMWare for my Late 2008 Macbook with 10.6.8, because I need to run a windows application. I just did a Disk Inventory on my the hardrive, and saw the info below. Does anyone know if there are specifically 5 files needed to run this? or did I accidentally download the thing 5 times?
The only other piece of data is that when I closed the VMWare today, the "last opened" for each of the 5 identical looking files was today's date.
They are 2G each...so I'd like to get rid of 4 of them if I can.

Those CPU figures are fine. It reaches no more than 80% in a few bursts but it would be good to look at it over a period longer than an hour.
Also.... remember that VCenter roles up stats, so that hour view is probably at 5 minute resolution, meaning that for four minutes you could have the CPU maxed out and it won't show in the graph.
Have a look on the VM at performance monitor. What is the CPU doing?
What is disk queue length doing? What about the disk read and write msec times? they'll all help get to the bottom of why it is slow.If you're worried about CPU oversubscription, you should look more at CPU Ready and Wait: (stolen from VMWare: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalI...)Reviewing performance metrics using the vSphere ClientFor more information on using custom performance charts, see the Customizing Chart Views section of the Resource Management Guide or the View Advanced Performance Charts section of the vSphere Monitoring and Performance Guide.Connect to vCenter Server or an ESX/ESXi host using the vSphere Client.Select the target virtual machine in the inventory.Click the Performance tab.Click Chart Options to customize the performance chart.Under the CPU heading, select Real-time. DMM VMWARE 5.2.3 or 5.3 can't open "Run Task"
Dear All,
I face problem when install DMM VMWare both version 5.2.3 or 5.3 When I want to open "run task" it will always show processing and can't go next.
I don't know what happen. I try to re-install many time but still found same problem even that I change machine running.
I attach picture in this question, so that all of you can know which page errors.
Thank you very muchDear all,
This is a known issue if you have not configured the full FQDN of your DMM in the "Servlet Server Address" field under "Digital Signs -> Settings -> Server Settings"
The latest DMM documentation does report this to be a mandatory step:

Does anybody know how the new licensing model work for VMware ADM
Hello Johan,
vCenter Application Discovery Manager licenses are serial numbers that can be either permanent or temporary. They are also limited by the number of "servers" discovered. Servers are entities running services to which clients may connect. The number of clients will not affect your server count.
For example, you may have a license for 1500 servers. If vCenter ADM has discovered 1000 servers and 2000 clients you will be ok. If you go over the 1500 server limit, then no new servers will be added to the inventory and you will receive warning messages that you will need to upgrade your license.
If you have a temporary license, then you will no longer be able to interact with the GUI when it has expired.
I hope this helps. Let us know if you have additional questions. -

What can I do to get jobs to run? I've imported a .csv and all the objects are listed, but I can't get the initial inventory to start.
Suggestions?did you make sure to add systems to the project? This same message happens when you do upload, but no systems are on the project. This typically happens when you create the company and project FIRST, then attach a collector afterwards.

If you create a company, but no project, attach collector and upload, then make a project ... then systems are available in the wizard during Project creation.
