IOMeter or NAS Perf Tester (network performance benchmarks) for Mac?

When I was on a PC-only home network, there were many network monitoring/testing tools like IOMeter And Intel NAS Perf tester. But I've been unable to find a network testing tool for the Mac. I'm interested in testing file creation/read/write speeds to/from my NAS.
Does anyone know of something for the Mac?
Also, I'm not afraid of using terminal, so if there's any built-in UNIX tools, or ones that are open source and can be compiled on OS X 10.6, I'm ok with that too.
Thanks.

I found something called HELIOS Lan Test. It seems to do the kinds of create/read/write testing I can use to benchmark my ReadyNAS NV+ file share protocols (CIFS, AFP, NETBIOS) to see which one is faster in my setup.
I already have iStat Menus, and I can monitor performance with it in a rough sense (ie. watch the display when I'm copying a large file), but the HELIOS Lan Test is a much better repeaatble test for ongoing analysis.

Q<WSI-29> Can you give any performance benchmarks for WLS web services?
A<WSI-29>: It is very difficult to quantify performance aspects of web services
since they depend on so many variables including but not limited to: backend system
processing by stateless session beans and message driven beans, size of XML SOAP
message sent, system hardware (CPU speed, parallel processing, RAM speed) and
system software (JVM type and version of WebLogic server). However, let me point
out that the EJB backend processing of requests both have the best possible scalability
within the EJB2.0 specification (both stateless session and message driven beans
can be pooled) and servlets have a proven scalable track record. Thus it should
be possible to scale your web service deployment to meet demand. The overhead
in processing XML within the servlet can be significant depending on the size
of XML data (either as a parameter or a return type). While WLS6.1 does not have
any features to address this performance concern, WLS7.0 will feature Serializer
and Deserializer classes which can be dedicated to the XML to Java and Java to
XML translation (they can also be automatically be generated from a DTD, XML Schema
    or regular JavaBean).
It is true that web services are not the fastest way to process client requests
but BEA is committed to making WebLogic server the fastest possible service provider.

  • Free or cheap AoE network drive support for Mac?   [(S)ATA over Ethernet)]

    Hi.
I recently bought an AoE network drive (this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817113049 ).
Is there a way to set it up as a shared drive from a Mac, so that other Macs (and possibly PCs) and the LAN can access it simultaneously via its gigabit Ethernet port ?
    I found an AoE driver for Mac ( http://store.shop2degreesfrost.com/aoedrcli-1.html ) only that it's about $200 !!!

I found out the IP address of the drive, through the router clients list, but what you suggest didn't work.
Neither the IP itself (x.x.x.x) nor smb://x.x.x.x worked.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Performance, Benchmark for Oracle XE

My buisness would like to use Oracle XE as a starter base installation for customers, so that they can easly upgrade to an full Oracle SE or EE later. However I fail to find benchmark tests (like tpc.org) which give an image of the performance of the Oracle XE and how it compares to other databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL in the smaller application market segment that XE is targeting.
We have been running som tests in house, but the currently I must say they are not in the Oracle XE favour. This is disapointing, as we would want to avoid for our customers to start of with a DB other than Oracle, then do an transistion to Oracle SE or EE when the need is there.
We are working on tuning/optimizing the database to perform better. Nevertheless it would be really interesting to see some benchmarks / comparison of the performance between Oracle XE an other DBMS in this segment of the DB market. Beeing well aware that their is not necessarely one database that fits each application/segment best, such a test would be informative. And also great input for my company when choosing which DB to use. Does anyone have any experience on this subject any feedback is highly appreciated. If anyone is interested I would be glad to post details regarding our tesing in house.
    Cheers

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Being well aware of the complexity of optimizing application performance I am simply trying to find as many inputs as possible to make a decision. A benchmark test would for me not yield "the truth" in any way, but simply be another parameter to consider. I am also aware that Oracle DB has several features that other DBs don't have.
You hit the nail on you assumption:
    2) use only the very basic features of both DBsThis is correct. We are using a EJB3.0 (Hibernate) environment togheter with JBOSS 4.0.5 application server, using no specific DB implementation. I realize that at some point, to acheive max performance, one should would have to implement code optimized for a specific DB. But right now I am interested in maximizing the performance with no specific DB code. We started out using Oracle XE, and it was doing well. We than switched to Mysql mainly for curiousity, and the performance was much better "out-of-the-box". ( x 2,5!) using less CPU -20%) an memory than Oracle XE. This was a suprising result for me, and now I would like to know why.
If the reason is that Oracle uses more resource for background processes like gathering statistics etc. this is a feasable explanation. Also in a larger system, if these processes take more or less the same resources, they would make out a smaller part of the total available resources. Right now I can't explain the performance gap, I simply observe the test results but cannot explain them.
As my demands to the DB features are limited (basic ER datatypes, incremental backup), is there perhaps a way to "disable advanced features" of Oracle XE, so that more CPU power is available to the application?
Also, how well does the JBOSS app. server integrate with the Oracle DB? Would the Oracle XE perform better with an Oracle App.server?
My application has a typical web-app, having mainly read queries with a high peak load (burst). I have tried tuning the connection pool etc. but no improvment. It is quite possible that I have reached the limit of performance of the Oracle XE, perhaps I am trying to use it for something it was not intended for? Having said this I would prefer to continue using Oracle XE, but it would be nice to know the reasons for the difference in performance.
    Any feedback is highly appreciated.

Can anybody share any benchmarking figures on XML DB with respect to performance.
    regards,

Oracle policy does not allow us to publish benchmarking numbers unless that are for an industry recognized independantly audited benchmarks such as TPC/C. Unfortunately there no industry standard benchmarks relating to XML data at this time. I can share with you that we believe for some classes of documents 9.2.0.3.0 will be much faster the 9.2.0.2.0. so if you are doing any performance evaluations of your own please make sure you have installed the 9.2.0.3.0 patch.

  • Network Backup HD for Mac OS 10.3.9 and 9.2.2

    Hi,
I'm going to be putting a 320 GB PATA Hitachi 320 GB HD into a Firewire enclosure
for Backing up my 10.3.9 HD with Data Backup scheduling. I also have a G3 B&W with Mac OS 9.2.2 and Dantz retrospect express to use for Backup too.
Is there a way to have this Firewire drive used for Network Backups for the 2 Macs with different scheduled backups, partitions, etc..?
The FireWire drive enclosure only has two firewire ports, but I also have the eMac and the G3 hooked up to a router and cable modem. I only have one Firewire
cable currently. The Network way would seem the best option though. (less cables)
    Thank you for any helps!

    Hi John,
    Thank you for your reply!
Can I replace my FireWire drive enclosure for a NAS enclosure? Where and how do you hook these NAS drives up?
I'm thinking I'll just have to manually attach the FireWire cable and mount the drive for backups (for the G3) It doesn't get used as much anyway. The first partition will be 130 GB for OS 9 and the rest will be for OS X. I'll just have to do it that way. Unless I can use Dantz over the Network, but that would still be the manual way of doing this. And more work. The G3 isn't on all the time anyway.
It doesn't seem to be a problem to do it this way. But, I'll need to be mindful of my incremental schedule for OS X when I backup OS 9.
    Oh well..
    Thank you!

  • NAS server with mp3s and Itunes for Mac & Windows. How to keep all running?

a)I have mp3s on the server (a NAS Hard Drive) when I run I-tunes even after selecting a a folder in the network hard drive tries to move the music on my local macbook under the i-tunes music folder location, this happens usually when I get I-tunes updates and re-installation. Is any way to stop I-Tunes to move files? I have no space in my Mac for all the mp3s.
    b) what is the best way to share the music files between two computers with I-Tunes, one being a Mac and the other a Windows? This, without screwing the files.
    c) I-Tunes generated a lot of duplicates. My guess is the same song may apply to different albums. Any way to correct this problem, so no more duplicates?
    Thank You
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

If you want cross-paltform comaptibility limit the fonts to OpenType or Windows TrueType formats, both of which work on both Mac and PC. To avoid missing font warnings the fonts must either be installed on each computer, or they must be in a folder named Document Fonts in the same location as the .indd file they are to work with. Packaging the file will build taht folder for you.
the rest of the stuff in your list won't help you. .idml would allow you to open on an older version, but does nothing for your situation. Embedding the links will keep you from having missing links, but so will packaging, and embedded links will make the file much larger and harder to work with.
For goodness sake, don't even think about outlining the text. It stops being text when you do that and you can no longer edit it.
And finally. do yourself a big favor and don't attempt to actually work on your file directly from the flash drive. Copy the whole package folder to the hard drive, work on it, then copy back. You don't want to know how many files are fatally damaged by write errors on flash drives.

  • Multi-user, networked set-up for Macs - ideas wanted!

Let me say at the outset that my preference would be to wait for the new Mac Pro Towers to come out.  Having said that, however, I'm looking for some ideas on setting up some sort of network environment for editing with either iMacs or Mac Minis.
I run a University Lab with 4 student work stations and 3 office editing suites.  All are connected to the network via gigabit.  In the past, we successfully used the FCP Server as an edit-in-place device.  Well... it was successful at *that* anyway   We shoot long-format, multicam, HD AVCHD (and we want to edit it natively).  Typically 4 or 5 two-camera, hour long shoots a week.  We also do occassional P2 work (2 or 3 camera shoots), DSLR (short pieces) and several three-camera (or more) multicam theater productions (2-4 hours each - AVCHD).
Does anyone have recommendations for a fast and reliable network solution (ideally over ethernet unless Thunderbolt would be a better solution) that would support, say, 4 simultaneous editors?  For the moment, let's say price is not as much of an issue as speed and reliablility.  I already have a 16TB network for medium-term storage of finished archived pieces and raw footage.  I'm looking for something smaller (4 TB), for working projects over the course of a semester.  TPTB would like to have it stored in the Server Room (which is why I said Ethernet over Thunderbolt).
As to computers... I'm no fan of iMacs (I prefer Minis) but the highest end one seems to have an Adobe supported graphics card.  As far as I can tell the minis don't.  Both iMacs and Minis have Thunderbolt but I really **really** don't want the nightmare of multiple external harddrives (been there, done that, hated it!).  Does anyone have experience using Premiere on either a mini or iMac?
Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  This isn't the route I want to go, but the money is available now and the new Mac Towers are not.
    Thanks
    Allynn

  • Network Storage Drive for Mac OSX and XP

Hi I am a new apple owner with a MBP 17 running OSX. I also have two other PC laptops in the house.
    I have a Linksys G wireless router.
What I would like to do is to have a dual HD enclosure that I can plug into my wireless router so that I can share data between my MBP and my PC laptops via the network. I would like to use dual HDs so I can mirror them for back up purposes.
My question is how do I set this up so both my MBP and PCs can use the same HD to store/share data? Suggestions on specific hardware to buy would be welcome as well.
    Thanks for you help,
    Vik

You should simply get a network storage drive like this:
    http://westerndigital.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=152&language=en
you can attach to it a second USB hard drive for backup. If you shop around you'll get better price than directly from WD.
Or you can go for Mirra which in my opinion is a much better bet as it will automatically backup folders you want and sync them between computers:

  • Properly Define Network Routing Definition for Mac OS X Server

    Hello,
I have am unable to get my Mac server (10.6.8) VPN to work from outside our firewall (which is a SonicWall TZ-210).  All the necessary ports are opened on the firewall but the Mac server does not appear to be properly configured to route the VPN traffic back through the SonicWall.  I suspect my Network Routing Definitions are wrong but I can not find any other threads that show how these should be defined in this scenario.
The current Network Routing Definitions are...
Network Address = my public IP
Network Mask = my public network mask
    Network Type = Public
    Network Address = 192.168.1.0
    Network Mask = 255.255.255.0
    Network Type = Private

All our DNS, Web, and email run on our server and we were lost to the world for those 10 days!
We have now upgraded to higher speed Time Warner broadband service for our primary, but still want to retain the Verizon DSL for redundancy.
Our hope is that if we have any connectivity issues with one, the other will hopefully be functioning and carry us through.
Not answering what you are asking, but addressing the redundancy issue ...
If you have a disaster like Sandy, with damage over a wide area, how sure are you that one of your connections will work? If for example the cabling is going through a common duct somewhere, your redundancy could be only theoretical. I know an installation that wanted reliable, disaster-proof communications, and paid for three services - and was offline when a builder a couple of miles up the road put his digger (back hoe?) through the shared pipe. Unless you can get guaranteed separation of service, it is not worth the extra cost and effort. Consider instead moving your server to a data centre, where they will already have addressed the issue, and your total cost may be no greater.

  • Comcast Warning Anyone know of Network Usage Meter for Mac?

I just received a "warning" of excessive network bandwidth usage by Comcast.
They suggest I get a free "meter" for my computer.
I downloaded about 4 of them (freeware) and they either dont work well, dont have documentation to have them work at all, or do not have a history function.
I would like to start it running first of month and then see how much I use that month
    Suggestions?
    TIA

Well it really depends on your network setup. I'd personally suggest getting a cheap box and running a sort of Firewall that will log network traffic. I run m0n0wall.ch/wall and it's been great, BUT it only shows me real time traffic, no historical data. I'm pretty sure www.pfsense.com will track historical bandwidth and is based on the m0n0wall project and another alternative which I believe will track data usage is www.Smoothwall.org or if you want to get down and dirty, Cacti will do it as well but takes quite a bit to configure.

Given this to be the case, I'd initially recommend that you disable lro for at least eth[2,3], then re-test network performance.
To disable lro on eth[2,3], perform the following against Oracle VM Servers' relevant interface configuration files:
    # for i in 2 3; do echo 'ETHTOOL_OFFLOAD_OPTS="lro off"' >> /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth$i; done
Once in place, shutdown (or migrate off) all guest VMs, restart the Oracle VM Server, startup (or migrate back) guest VMsI was also pointed to a network performace tuning document for OVM 3
