IOS App: Different name

I'm thinking of the creation of an app for iOS (iPhone and iPad). Since the app most be multi-language, I'm wondering if the name of the App can variate depending of the language of the iOS?
Eg. if I'm creating a calendar app (like Apple did), the name of the app is "Calendar" on english iOS and "Kalender" in Danish iOS. Apple did that with their own Apps, but what can we developers do that for our apps?

Hi Dennis, and welcome to the Dev Forum!

Yes, both the name and the icon displayed in the iOS home screen can be localized. To localize the name:
1) Ctrl-click on the Resources group folder in the Group & Files tree on the left side of your Xcode project window;
2) Select Add->New File... from the pop-up menu;
3) Under Mac OS X in the left-hand panel of the New File window, select Other (you might need to scroll to the bottom of the list to find Other);
4) Select Strings File from the icon panel, and click Next;
5) In the second New File window, name the file "InfoPlist.strings", and click Finish.
6) You should now see InfoPlist.strings in the Resources group. Select this file and click the Info icon in the top tool bar of the project window;
7) In the File "InfoPlist.strings" Info window, select the General tab, then click Make File Localizable towards the bottom of the window;
8) Reselect the General tab and click Add Localization in the lower-left corner of the window;
9) Under "Enter the name of the new localization:" in the pop-up window, select a language from the picker list (for now just choose a language from the list, even if it's not one you currently wish to support; the link below leads to more info on adding languages);
10) Return to the Resources group in theGroups & Files tree. You should now see the InfoPlist.strings entry can be expanded;
11) Expand InfoPlist.strings. There should be two files, one with the name of your native dev language, the other with the name of the language you selected in step 9. For this example, assume these are English and French, which may be fully spelled out or abbreviated to "en" and "fr" respectively;
12) Double-click on the English file to open the file in a Xcode editor window;
13) On the first blank line of the file, enter 'CFBundleDisplayName = "Foo";' <-- Type everything between the apostrophes literally. The double quotes and the semicolon are required;
14) Save and close the English file, double-click on the French file, enter 'CFBundleDisplayName = "Bar";', then save and close the French file.
15) Select Build->Clean All Targets from the Xcode menu, then click Build and Go.
The name of your app should now change from "Foo" to "Bar" when your simulator or device language setting is changed from English to Français.

  • Separate 'itunes' / 'iOS launch screen' names for apps?

    I've noticed many apps I have display one name in itunes and a different name in the iOS launch screen. I wish to do this for my app because my app name is too long and gets truncated in an ugly way. So there is the <name> tag which seems to apply the name to both. Is there a separate tag for just the iOS launch screen name?
    Thanks

    Hi jayxtee
    I've no idea why this happens, or how to fix it, but I did find a couple of workarounds which I've detailed in a blog post here: iTunes 11 and 12 Not Updating iDevice Apps Automatically. There are not the most elegant of solutions, but I hope they help a bit...

  • Why deadlines in Reminders appear differently in iCloud web and in iOs app?

    In the iCloud web app, when I set a new reminder, a "deadline" can be added. In the iOs app, this deadline is visible, but if I create a new reminder in the iOS app I can only set an alarm date but no deadline, which appear in a different line. In other words, reminders created in the web app have "deadlines", reminders created in the iOS app have "alarm date". In the iOS app, the list is sorted by deadline, not alarm date, I can't find anything. How can Reminders be useful if I can't work in the web app and the iOS app at the same time?

  • IOS Apps in iTunes - how to tell latest version?

    I'm trying to find out which of my iOS apps haven't been updated in, say, the last three years. There are 4 date columns available in the View Options:
    Date Added, Date Modified, Purchase Date, and Release Date. As far as I can tell this is what each one denotes:
    Date Added: the date I first purchased the app.
    Date Modified: the date I downloaded the latest version
    Purchase Date: the date I "purchased" the latest version
    Release Date: the date the very first version was added to the App Store
    So the second & third dates are identical for the vast majority of my apps, but a few have wildly oddball dates. For example, one has the 2009 date I first purchased the app under the Purchase Date column instead of the Date Added column. Also the 2014 date that is in the Date Added column is in the Date Modified column (even though it is one that I KNOW hasn't been updated since 2009).
    So which is the correct column to use in determining how old is the app version I have installed? I'm thinking either the Date Modified or Purchase Date columns would work, but there are the few apps where the dates in those two columns DON'T match. Suggestions?

    When I go to iTunes preferences under the Devices tab, there is a date and time for my iPhone's backup - next to the name for my iPhone.
    Where are you looking for this?
    Just wondering because I had some important pictures I took on the phone and want them saved just incase my phone starts acting up again.
    Photos captured by your iPhone should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. Have you ever used a digital camera before? If so, did you leave all photos captured by your digital camera on the digital camera - you never imported the photos from the camera by your computer so the photos were stored and available on your computer for viewing or for sending via email or whatever? If you did, why would photos captured by your iPhone be treated any differently?
    You should always import these photos by your computer - as with any other digital camera. It isn't a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup alone for these photos.

  • AiO Remote iOS app -scanning A4

    I have a Photosmart 5515 All in One printer and have been using the iOS app AiO Remote app to scan in some A4 pages. I set the app to scan to a document and also the page size to A4. Looking at the resultant document it has scaled the the document down. It has centralised the document but you end up with margins of a couple of inches all round.
    Has anyone else noticed this?
    Does anyone know how to overcome this?

    Hi Rturner003,
    Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I understand that you are encountering difficulties when scanning A4 documents with HP's All-in-One Printer Remote app.
    I did some testing on this with an iPad and 3 different ePrint capable printers and each time I was able to recreate it. However that doesn't mean we are kippered.  I have included a link to a post on the forums and the key part for you to get your A4 scanned document to print the document as you require, please follow step 3 after you have scanned the image. The key is to pinch the image to the size you would like.

  • HP ePrint iOS app no longer finds Photosmart C4780 after app update

    I have an HP Photosmart C4780 connected through WiFi to my network but sadly it's not supported by AirPrint on iDevices.
    So, I was using HP ePrint Home & Biz iOS app (version 4.1) which was very useful for me as it found the printer and allowed me to print from my iPad/iPhone.
    Today I updated the app on my iPhone to version 5 (now simply named "HP ePrint" on the App Store) and after the update, the new version doesn't find my Photosmart C4780 anymore. I did the Activation thing on the iPhone, as it was requested to refresh the list of printer on my network in the All tab, but after Refresh no printer is found.
    Still I have the old 4.1 on my iPad (and hopefully in my iTunes library) and the printer is located, I assume, through mDSN as it shows the name specified for this setting.
    So, question is: Did you dropped support for Photosmart C4780 on 5.0 release of HP ePrint iOS app? If so, why did't you informed this appropriately on the app update text description in the App Store? A message like "some printers may not be supported anymore" would have been helpul.
    If HP ePrint should find Photosmart C4700 series printers and this is an issue, how should we proceed from here?
    Thanks.

    WilliamBPS,
    I was not informed that support was removed from the app for certain printers. It may have been lost in the transition to the new updated app. I will deffinitly pass this information along as it is very important that the app supports as many printers as it can. I'll go ahead and take note of your printer model. If I find anything out about this, I'll try to give you an update in this thread.

  • Sync iOS Apps to iTunes - Questions on how exactly this works...

    I'm going to put my questions up top, but my understanding of the current system is below, and may be relevant to the questions, if you'd like to read through it.
    How can I back up / restore a SINGLE app, including its data (e.g. a game save file), to either iTunes or the cloud... or anything else for that matter. Does syncing an app to iTunes serve this purpose?
    What IS the purpose of syncing an iOS app to iTunes? Does this sync include the data stored on my iOS device? For example, if I have a game in which I've made progress, is this progress stored on both my iPhone and my Mac once I've synced the app to iTunes?
    If data IS synced along with the app, how is this data managed? Say I have two iPhones, both with the same game but different progress in each. If I sync iPhone A with iTunes, then sync iPhone B, will iPhone A's data overwrite iPhone B's? Or are there two versions of this app floating around on my mac?
    If data is NOT synced along with the app, why on earth would I want a bunch of huge storage-hogging iOS apps that are identical to what I could download from the App Store taking up GIGABYTES of space on my MacBook's SSD?
    And finally, should the answer to question 4 be "there is no reason to store 42GB worth of useless apps on your 256GB SSD alongside your already gigantic iOS device backup files," how would I go about removing these apps stored in iTunes without iTunes trying to delete them from my iOS device every time I want to sync some TV shows or podcasts?
    My Understanding So Far:
    Of the many things Apple has addressed and improved upon over the years, backing up iOS app data has strangely not been one of them. As I understand it, the only way to back up an app, including its data (e.g. the save data for a game), is to do a FULL backup of the ENTIRE device. The only way to restore an app, including the data that you backed up, is to restore the ENTIRE device, all other apps included, to a previous state.
    The driving force behind these questions is that I'd like the option to delete an app from my iPhone when I'm finished with it - but I'd also like the option to re-download it in the future and pick up where I left off. In a perfect world, all these apps would automatically sync through iCloud or GameCenter, or at least have that option to "upload to iCloud" or "restore from iCloud." Even with these apps, I'm not entirely sure where the backed up files exist - somewhere on my iCloud drive separate from my iPhone backup, photos, contacts, etc? Is there a way to see a list of apps that are storing things in my iCloud drive, and even manage this data?
    So if I wanted to back up an app's data that does NOT automatically back up to iCloud, it seems my only option would be to install one of the many 3rd party Mac <-> iOS data transfer apps, and copy the contents of the "Documents" folder to a designated directory on my Mac. Then I could delete the app off my iPhone. Say in the future I re-download the app - I'd use the same data transfer app to copy the backed-up data to the re-downloaded app's Documents folder, and we're back in business. The only downside is that if it's been a while and the app has undergone updates, this backed-up data might be corrupt or no longer relevant. Plus, it's kind of a hassle.
    When I discovered iTunes was syncing my apps to my Mac, I thought it might be serving as a way to back up my apps, data included, to my computer. Okay, it seemed like a little overkill to sync the whole app along with the data, but when I discovered that you could UPDATE the apps within iTunes, I thought apple had solved the problem of storing backed-up data for out-of-date versions of an app - simply update the app in iTunes, it does what's necessary to your backed-up data, and when you want to put the app back on your iPhone, voila! Your old data's there, AND you've got the most recent version! But apparently this is not at all how iTunes app syncing works.
    As I NOW understand it, when iTunes "syncs" an app to your Mac, it includes only the app's core data - the same as if you'd just downloaded it from the App Store, and it does so for EVERYTHING you've purchased, ever, whether or not it's on any of your iOS devices. I can see how this could be convenient if you live on a farm and want to restore an old app to your iPhone without an internet connection, but I don't think it's worth, unexaggerated, a FIFTH of my hard drive. Worse, I can't figure out how to get rid of them.
    TL;DR
    So, if you're still with me, what is the purpose of iTunes App Sync, and if it's as useless as I think it is, how do I get rid of it for good?

    You can upgrade to Snow Leopard and skip over Leopard, and only upgrade to Lion later if wanted/needed. snow Leopard specs/requirements below.

  • HT201299 Not enable or disable cellular data for certain iOS apps and features from setting? I keep it off but when I go to other app it on automatic

    I can't  enable or disable cellular data for certain iOS apps and features from  setting.
    When I off data for specific application and go to other option it automatic on all application
    Any one can help

    SOLUTION! (NO NEED TO RESET YOUR IPHONE SETTING!)
    I have the same issue for the last two weeks. But i have already managed to solve the issue all by myself. When i go to Settings > Cellular > below the tab "use cellular data for:", i turned off some apps which i didnt want to use with cellular data. As soon as i go back to Settings, and then i went back to Cellular, the apps which i had switched off earlier, automatically turned back on.
    Here's the solution:
    Either you're using wifi or cellular data, first of all you're gonna hafto turn on the cellular data use for App Store. Once you have turned it on, go to App Store application. Update ALL the apps which have new updates available. If it asks you to log in your App Store, just do so. If there's something wrong with your debit or credit card information, it will ask you to update to a different card. Just do what it asks. Put in a new credit or debit card info and fill in the forms provided. The card you're using must be usable and has usable balance in it. Let's say atleast $10 to $20. As soon as it confirms your card successfully, the app updates will start automatically. Continue to update all the apps. After all updates are finished, go back to Settings > Cellular. Try to switch on or off some apps for data use and recheck.
    Try it yourself! Have a nice day and don't put a blame on Apple for this.
    From Malaysia, with love.

  • IOS App 8.1.5 Remote Desktop can't connect to Windows 7 Pro after upgrade. Error 0x00000507

    Nothing has changed between my network, Windows 7 computer or my iPad besides the upgrade of the ios app software to 8.1.5.  Did not used to have any issues connecting but now when I try to connect, I get the above error when logging in.
    I have tried reinstalling the ios app with no success and also confirmed I can still remote desktop to the PC from another PC with the credentials I've always been using.
    I've also tried explicitly including the domain when entering the username with no luck.  Looked through my Windows 7 event logs and can't find any more information on what this error means.
    Has anyone seen anything similar or have any ideas what I can do to troubleshoot? Thanks!

    Hi,
    I have a same problem.
    Although RD Client 8.1.4 worked great, now I cannot connect to Windows 7 Professional computer from my iPhone 5 (iOS 6.1.4) since the latest update.
    Same as Twiggles, when I try to log in (just after entering username and password), the app gives me error code 0x507 "Disconnected from server".
    Note that I connect to my PC over VPN using Cisco AnyConnect app.
    After that, I've tried to connect to my PC in two different ways with same network settings as the above situation.
    1. Use different remote app
    I've tested free version of "PocketCloud" from Dell Wyse, and I CAN connect to my PC.
    2. Use different version of iOS
    I've tested the latest RD Client 8.1.5 on my another iPhone (5s) with iOS 8.1, and I CAN connect to my PC.
    Therefore, I assume our 0x507 is not setting related, but probably some sort of iOS version dependent problem arise from the latest update.
    Even though I tried PocketCloud, I believe RD Client is the BEST app for remote desktop for iOS.
    I strongly hope this problem will be solved!
    Thanks.

  • How do I localize Flash CS5.5 iOS app to one language

    What method or process do I use to set an iOS app to only one language?
    I recently had an iPad app written in Flash CS5.5 approved at the iTunes app store. I noticed at the iTunes store, it indicates that my app is localized in 14 different languages. I never set this up; it seems that there is a process that automatically adds several default language localizations to the ipa binary when the file is published. I tried the strings panel, used a var to set the localID, went into the SDK for flex and flash builder and deleted the locales (could not find anything similar for Flash itself), but none of this seems to prevent Flash from adding the language defaults. I have found many examples on how to localize my app for several languages, but nothing on how to set it to only one.
    Thanks much, Jon

    Well, I followed the iOS language list in iTunes thread   in this forum and was able to get rid of them all. I have to say that not any single reply in the thread was exactly right. It took a combination of Saumitra Bhave's and spinlight's replies and mass of trial and error to get it all to work. Even the App loader utility came up as obsolete! I have uploaded the updated binary to Apple and am awaiting their approval. The biggest issue is the placement of and actual coding in the entitlements plist; spinlight had the right idea, but, at least in my case, was coded out a bit different. Also, it was not exactly apparent that you had to use the teminal untility to recodesign the app after tearing it apart. Thank the heavens I have a least a basic understanding of how things work on the Mac and was able to puzzle it out. If Apple approves the app and all things look good, I will follow up here with what I did. Of course, if Adobe would kill this bug with a giant can of bug spray, this crazy work around wouldn't be needed...
    Thanks much,  Jon

    I followed the instructions on the adobe website to build an air app for iOS but on the last step it
    doesn't export the app.
    What I've done so far:
    - Apple developer account
    - creating the certificate + convert it to .p12
    - app ID / Name etc.
    - creating the provisioning profile from apple
    - iOS Air app in flash (Only Text "Hello world" with a tween)
    Now i have to load the certificates into Flash & enter a password (is it the password that
    i entered in the certificate or from my developer account/ Apple ID password? Both didn't work at the end)
    When i klick on publish in the last step than it loads a while but then i get the Error:
    "no access to the digital certificate"
    What is wrong? Can you help me please.

    Also, I should say, when I go into my phone on the computer and try to install an app, I get this message:
    Unable to start operation. Installer is already in use.
    Any ideas
