IOS Numbers and Blank Cells

I am a teacher trying to use an iPad with iOS Numbers as a mobile gradebook.
One issue I have is making a blank cell not count in sums and averages. When I enter a new assignment, the student automatically gets a zero until I enter his or her actual grade, which negatively and unfairly affects his or her averages.
Is there a way to skip a blank cell in sums and averages instead of having it automatically count as a zero?
I also have Numbers on a laptop (if that helps).

Hello Everybody,
I'm making a new script logic that acumulates the values month by month, it means that february=januaryfebruary, march=januaryfeb+mar, etc. Everything was workin fine, until i had some values in blank in few months, in those cases the calc ignored them and stops the acumulation.
For example if i have info only from jan to sep, the calc doesn't show any value for oct,nov and dec. What i want in those cases is that the data obtained for sep be the same in oct, nov and dec, because in theory the sum should be +zero(which is the value contained in blank cells right?)
Does anybody knows why is this calc stopping at this level?

Do you run the script from Data package? if not
check
XDIM_MEMBERSET is very important to fix the scope for the calculation.
To avoid this system reaction you can change the coding and clearly define
which account shall be taken into account when doing the calculation
independent if one of the defined member has or has not changed its value.
You do this via Memberset statements.
other approach is YTD measures

Excel formulas and blank cells

I have this formula which calculates the number ordered (C11) by the price (E11) and if the cells are blank then the cell containing this formula is blank, if they aren't blank then they show the result. This works a treat.
=IF(SUM(C11*E11)=0,"",SUM(C11*E11))
In cell G11 I have a percentage, e.g. 80%. This is then used in cell H11 to multiply the answer from the first formula in cell (F11)to give me 80% of the cost. I would like the formula in cell F11 to show the result if figures are put into cells C11 and
E11 (giving the result in cell F11 and if there are no figures in the corresponding cells, F11 is shown as blank.I've tried a few things but I just can't get it to work.

Reading formulars and blank cells in Excel by POI event based API

Hello at all,
first sorry for my english.
I have to read Excel files using the POI event based API.
These files contain FormularRecords, whitch values are Strings.
I googled a lot, but I didn't found a way, to get FormularRecords as string.
This I need, because I have to compare the position of the Cell (row, column)
with other values.
An other way to get these cells is reading them as StringRecord or SSTRecod.
But there is no method .getRow() or .getColumn() for StringRecords and SSTRecords.
My other problem:
Some cells without a value can not be read.
Using the BlankRecord didn't catch all of them.
When I go to these cells and just hit Return (no value is set), then the cells can be catched.
Can anyone give me an idea?
It really would be very helpfull.
And I hope my english can be understood.

Problem is solved,
in the datastream the FornulaRecord appears before the StringRecord.
I take the position from the Formula and value from the String.

Numbering and table cells

I want to have auto list numbering continuing down a column in a table, but I can't find a way to do this. Despite having 'continue numbering' ticked in the inspector for the style I've applied, ,the numbers restart with each row.
IE
I want
1. r1,c1 r1,c2
2. r2, c1 r2, c2
3. r3, c1 r3, c2
4. r4,c1 r4, c2
... but I'm getting...
1. r1,c1 r1,c2
1. r2, c1 r2, c2
1. r3, c1 r3, c2
1. r4,c1 r4, c2
Is there a way to do this? There is in Word but you know, it's Word....

=AVERAGE(A)
If you want to include blank cells as zero, type this formula in B2 (and Fill Down)
=IF(A2<>0,A2,0)
Numbers 3 will change the formula to
=IF(A2≠0,A2,0)
Yeah, right! but that is Numbers 3.
And the answer (6/4) is 1.5. Correct!

When I tried this using the Gradebook Template, I found that if I added a new work item to be graded (quiz, exam, assignment, etc) as a new column (adjusting the weight to keep the semester/term total equal to 100% of the grade) that the new column is blank until I enter something, even if the cell is formatted for numbers. So that worked as planned.
There is another way, of course to keep the grade from being recorded as zero - use a pull-down (pop-up menu in the cell - you can set the first line in the menu to read "Petunia", "new item", "ungraded" or anything you wish and then build the pop-up list to match your grading needs (e.g., 100%, 99%, 98%, ... or A, B, C or A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, or 4.0, 3.75, 3.5, 3.25, etc... you get my drift) Sounds tedious BUT you only have to build it once and then copy/paste and match style for all the rest. So here you can create a new column, paste in the pop-up menu cell you've carefully created elsewhere, fill-down and you are ready to go (just remember to adjust the weighting to stay fair.) Someone writes a stellar paper, pull-down to the grade you think it deserves, move on to the next, etc.
On the iPad (iOS Numbers) the formatting is: Select the cell > Styles Menu (brush) > Format > Pop-Up Menu > (enter your desired list) > Initial Value = Blank or First Item.
Works for me. Try it.

How can I import an excel sheet and have it be functional in iOS Numbers?

Pretty much exactly as title. To summarize, I'm a kinesiologist and I've developed a pretty complex spreadsheet that enables me to program exercise prescriptions on the fly but I want to be able to take it with me more portably on my ipad air. Unfortunately when I load the spreadsheet into numbers it wont recognize any of the drop down menus that are coded into the excel spreadsheet on my macbook. Help? Thanks,

My apologies. Data Validation Tool didn't click at first. There isn't a data validation tool in numbers per se, but you can limit input in many cases using the cell formatting tool: http://help.apple.com/numbers/ipad/2.2/#/tan23393f3a
Cells set up using Data Validation may very well not retain the Data Validation settings when converted to Numbers for iOS. The two formats seem to use different mechanisms to achieve this. Meaning that 1) you would likely need to re-format these cells once you have the spreadsheet in number, 2) if you export the spreadsheet to EXCEL, the drip downs may likely not work, leading to 3) if you intended process is move the file back and forth between Numbers and Excel, you may be in for a bit of grief.
If you intent to simply leave the file in Numbers, you the link above to see how you may wish to format those cells. I think you will be able to achieve what you are looking to do.

Without knowing what is in F35 and F29, I can only guess. Your formula matches what you said but if F35 and/or F29 are the results of formulas and are decimal numbers (not integers), it is very possible that they are not exactly the same number even though you think they should be. IEEE Floating Point math often has very very small errors so the answer is not exactly what you would get with a pencil and paper. Try one or both of these things:
Format the IF cell as scientific. is that 0.0 exactly zero? I suspect it will be some very tiny number.
Type the exact same number into F35 and F29 and see if your IF formula works as you expect.
You might need to use ROUND on F35, F29 and/or in your IF formula to get rid of the tiny math errors.
If you search the forum for floating point math or IEEE 754 you should find more than a few posts about Numbers and floating point math. Or you can read about IEEE 754 on Wikipedia. It trips up a lot of people.
Here is a common example. B2 and C2 are from the formulas shown in B1 and C1. They should both be exactly zero, if done with paper and pencil. Neither is exactly zero (though I have them formatted with 2 decimals so they appear to be 0.00), they are different from each other, and subtracting one from the other is also not exactly zero.

It seems to be broken on some ipad 2 installations. I found a workaround. Click on a cell that has text in it. The bar then activates. You can then move to other cells and keep the bar. When you end your edit you are back to no bar unless you start with a text cell. Hope they fix this soon.

Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo. It is safe to do, there should be no content loss. It is the same as rebooting your computer.

Open the document,
Tap the Tools icon (upper right).
Tap Document Set up.
Drag the margins to the position you wish (the actual margin width sould display as you are doing this).

Since the last update my Numbers app in IOS, iPad3 and iphone5 will not open. It works fine on my macbook pro. It starts but before I can open a file it closes.

If you've already restarted both your iOS devices after the update and Numbers for iOS still won't load, you might try clearing the documents temporarily out of iCloud, opening the apps, closing them, and then placing the documents back in iCloud.
To do this, in Finder on your Mac, hold down the option key and then Go > Library > Mobile Documents > com~apple~Numbers. Move the documents there out to the Desktop or other location of your choosing. Then give iCloud time to sync. Then try opening Numbers on iPad and on the iPhone. If they open, then close them, and move the documents back into Library > Mobile Documents > com~apple~Numbers and let iCloud sync again.
That sometimes clears up the problem.
