  • IPhone 4 "other" space?

iTunes indicates that my iPhone 4 is utilizing .51gb of "other" space.  Any idea what "other" is and if it can be safely removed?

This typically indicates corrupted data on the device.
A search of the forums would have told you exactly what is going on and how to address it.
Here's a couple of threads on this exact subject.

  • HT4623 How can I download Setup/archive files to update my iPhone 3gs, other then from itunes, My Iphone is dead and Itunes is giving error.

Hello all, My iphone is giving problem its something dead or freeze, I want to update its software but itunes giving network error regardless I have a proper Internet connection.
    please tell me other ways
    Thanx in Advance

    Hi there besiburuk,
You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Check USB connections
    Related errors: 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643-1650, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response,” and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you checked your connections and are still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues.

  • I have a iphone 3GS and approxiamtely 4 gigs of spaces is taken up by the other categoy. How can I find out what is being stored in the other section to free up some space.

Can anyone provide some insight on the problem that I am experiencing?  I have an IPhone 3GS.  Four of the 8 total gigs are taken up in the other category. I have attempted to delete apps numerous other things to free up space;  however, I cannot determine why so much of the device's capacity is taken up in the other category.  How can I find out what is stored in the other category to free up some of the device's storage capacity.

  • Just upgraded iPhone 3GS to IOS5. Now there's 21GB of Others.  How to get rid of it?  It's taken up all the space on the phone.

Just upgraded iPhone 3GS to IOS5. Now in itunes I can see there's 21GB of Others.  I have no idea what is that.  I didnt have that before the upgrade. How to get rid of it?  It's taken up all the space on the phone.

I posted a fix for this temporary issue earlier but here it is in short:
The memory "hog" that is "others" seems to be the OS as it's installing. It seems to want more than 12GB and you may get stuck at the point where iTunes tries to load everything back on and the iPhone has run out of space. What you need to to is un-check the "sync" box at the apps, music, podcasts and other sections, then click the button to sync iTunes with iPhone. This will result in iTunes deleting all the data it restored, but you'll put it back later. Once you caused the deletion of most of the data, iOS5 will resume installing and then "magically" shrink to less than 1GB. Then you can place check marks back in the boxes and re-sync all your apps and other data. You will have plenty or memory left.
I followed the above procedure and my iPhone works perfectly.
    Hope this helps.

  • After upgrading to iOS 5, I lost my contacts, calendar entries, and Notes on my iPhone 3GS (3 years old). How do I retrieve them? My last backup/sync to iTunes acct was Sept 18 but yesterday's backup bombed due to lack of space on my C: drive.

Yikes! After upgrading my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5, I lost my Contacts, calendar entries, and Notes (100+) on my iPhone (3 years old). How do I retrieve them? My last backup/sync to iTunes acct was Sept 18 but yesterday's backup bombed due to lack of space on my C: drive.

This happened to me too but it was really all there.  Go to your calendar, click on calendar in the upper left hand corner, click on show all calendars, click done in the right upper corner.  Everything should show up!!!
I was super thrilled.  Hope this works for you!!

  • How much free space do I need to have on my 32GB iPhone 3GS?

How much free space do I need to have on my 32GB iPhone 3GS for optimum performance? I have only 4 GB left and I am worried that performance will soon be degraded.

Apple allocates space on the flash memory for cacheing proposes. You shouldnt worry. You can fill it up with out preformance problems.

  • I have an iphone 3GS and suddenly am getting a "storage almost full message" even though I have 1.4 GB of free space. Now I cannot text.  How do I trouble shoot this?

I have an iphone 3GS and suddenly am getting a "storage almost full message" even though I have 1.4 GB of free space. Now I cannot text.  How do I trouble shoot this? I recently upgraded to version 6.1.3 if that helps.

When you sync using iTunes on your computer, do you see a lot of "Other" at the bottom of the iTunes Summary Page for your iPhone?  If you do, try a "Restore iPhone ...".  That should help.
Hopefully that would do it for you.  If not, the next (more drastic) step would be to restore again as above, but choose "Restore as New" and then manually sync.  Omit any apps that might be suspcious in their space use (primarily Game Center apps).

  • IPhone 3GS with iOS 5 and storage space/app problems... Please read and help

I have an iPhone 3GS with iOS 5. Before the update I had a load of apps etc and was left with approx 4gb space left. Since the update removed ALL my apps from my iPhone, I still have the same ammount of space. Why is this?

    Hi,
Are you sure your phone has not been unlocked or jailbroken at some time as the same thing happened to me.
I had the phone secondhand and did not know. Updating to IOS 5 locked the phone back to the original service provider which was AT&T in USA and I am in UK.
    Hope this helps,
    Alan

  • IPhone 3Gs out of space and bricked

Two weeks ago I did a sync of my iPhone 3Gs (28 GB), following an upgrade to version 5.1 of the software.  At the end, I noticed in iTunes that the capacity bar was solid yellow, without the normal demarcation of space by category (music, photos, etc.).  It was almost completely full, with just a few MB left.  I didn't have time to deal with it then.
Over the last two weeks, my phone has been unbearably slow and unresponsive for functions that have nothing to do with AT&T's horrid network.  The touchscreen is very unresponsive, some apps have stopped working, functions that used to take 1-2 seconds take 5-10 or longer.  My theory is that with so little free space on the phone, the o/s struggles to do some basic functions.
So tonight I removed 1-2 GB of music and photos, with the thought of resyncing to free up disk space.  However, the "sync" button in iTunes was disabled, and I couldn't find any way to force a sync.  So I chose to restore from the backup of my last sync on March 11th.  The sync completed, but now my phone is a black screen with a white apple logo, and below it an empty bar (looks like a status bar).  But nothing is happening.  I've tried to power it off, but can't.
My phone is now a brick.
Any suggestions on how to recover my phone, and also any tips on the optimal free disk space to ensure proper functioning would be greatly appreciate.
P.S.  At&T cell coverage in downtown Chicago has always been bad, but in the past two weeks it's been downright unusable.  I can't make a phone call longer than 3 minutes without it dropping, and forget about anything but the most mundane data usage.  I know I'm overdue to upgrade phones, but I've been holding out for the iPhone 5.  Any idea when that might arrive?

Follow-up.  I did the Power-Home combo to try to reboot it, but it lands at the same black screen with the empty white status bar.
I hate to restore to factory settings, but I fear there may not be a choice.

  • IOS5 on iPhone 3GS - 'over capacity' unknown used space & can't sync music.

I just downloaded the new iOS5 for my iPhone 3GS, and ever since I got it, I can't sync my music as it says that it is 'over capacity', even though I had over 6GB of free space left before the upgrade.
I also found out that I have 9.9GB of 'other' in which I didn't have before iOS5 upgrade.
I just want to get rid of the 'other' category & sync my music on my iPhone -- HELP!!!

Similar issues as in you don't got your music back on the phone? That's not the same problem or anything "similar" to this problem i must say!
Your problem is simple, you always need to resync the music from your current computer when you upgrade to a new iOS version, most people don't see this as a problem as they simply drag and drop their files to the iphone(or itunes library) or sync from their library if the music already exist in there.
So for you, just find the music on your computer and drag and drop them to your phone if you have selected to handle music/videos manually in itunes when you click your iphone on the summary "page".

  • I've updated my iPhone 3gs with IOS 6 but being only 8GB it now has no space for data. Can I go back to IOS 5.1?

I've updated my iPhone 3gs with IOS 6 but being only 8GB it now has no space for data!
Can I restore back to IOS 5.1?

It sounds like you have a hacked/unofficially unlocked iphone.  When you update, it will indeed lock it back, as it should.
The ONLY place that can legitimately unlock an iphone is the carrier to which they are locked and no U.S. carrier does this.

  • My iPhone 3GS  is close to running out of memory space,  would Dropbox  work

I am running out of storage and memory on my iPhone  3GS so if I use the Dropbox to store some of the data online so I can relieve some of the storage. Problems ? How do I get this to work and start it.

If you have Time Machine enabled, then those are Time Machine snapshots. They will be deleted automatically if the space is needed. You can also do this:
    About Time Machine local snapshots
    Time Machine Snapshots
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and enter or paste the appropriate command line. Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed. Press RETURN again.
To turn them ON: sudo tmutil enablelocal
To turn them OFF: sudo tmutil disablelocal
Note that turning them OFF will also delete all existing snapshots.
For more about snapshots see: OS X Mountain Lion- About local snapshots.

  • I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) but the messages are still there.

I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) with iTunes but the messages are still there. How can I get rid of these texts for good and have more space on my phone? 6.33 gb of other space is way too much, thats almost half of my overall available space (13.5 gb.) I don't want to reset my phone and lose all my other texts/ app progress/ photos. I do have backups, but when I restore from the backup the other space comes back along with everything else. What can I do to get rid of this other space and the 'deleted' text messages? (I'm running iOS 6.1.3 if that helps)

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

  • Downloading iPhone 3GS photos and Videos to other computers

I recently got my first iPhone and am still finding out how to do things, so, apologies if this sounds dim but....
How do I download photos and videos from my iPhone 3GS to other computers?
I can plug in to my mac and sync everything with iTunes - no problem
I can plug into a PC and open up the iPhone files and copy across to the PC- no problem
    BUT
If I plug a mac other than my own it just opens up iTunes. How can I copy a photo onto this mac without syncing the whole thing?
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Rob

When iTunes opens up, just close it down, because you do not want to sync with any computer other than the computer you normally sync with. Then launch iPhoto & you can then import the photos/videos in your camera roll. Photos/videos synced to your phone cannot be imported to any other computer.
