IPhone 4 Capacity query

Hi,
Firstly, let me say I`m new to this iPhone thing so please excuse me if I have asked a silly question here.
I just got an iPhone 4 - 8GB last weekend as a gift from a family member and have set all back to factory default and started from new again. Since I have loaded very little on to it I cannot understand it when I go into` About` and `General` it says Capacity = 6.3GB,  Available = 2.5GB. How can this be when I have installed very little on to it other than 7 photos and 7 songs.
Any ideas as to what may be happening here or am I reading this all wrong.
Thanks,
Ian

When an iPhone is replaced by Apple, the replacement unit will either have the remainder of warranty of the original iPhone (one year from date of original purchase) or 90 days, whichever is longer. You do not get a new one-year warranty from the date of the replacement.
Regards.

  • IOS 7.1 - Where is iPhone capacity on iTunes?

My iphone5 just upgraded to iOS 7.1.  When syncing on iTunes, my iphone main page used to look like the picture below, with the capacity bar across the bottom and the Sync button on the right.  Now there is no capacity bar or sync button at all.  Is there a way to get that back?  It it somewhere else?  Thanks for any help or tips.

There has been no change.  What iTunes displays is determined by iTunes, not the iOS.
    Restart your computer and iPhone.

  • Iphone capacity question

When you have your iphone linked to your computer and you can see the summary tab of the Iphone within Itunes, it indicates the capacity at the bottom. There is ORANGE designated as other........what is encompassed in other on the Iphone????

Yah, I just noticed that my 'other' capacity went from 194 MB to 342MB after my latest sync. What the **** could be in there to take up so much space? That's nearly 1/25th of my entire capacity!
I cleared my safari cache and history, cleared all my email accounts of emails (on the iphone)... and after I did that, that's when the 'other' increased in size! Crazy.
Now I've rebooted the phone. I'm considering just resetting the phone and starting over.

  • HT4847 iPhone Capacity Question concerning iCloud Storage

Does buying additional icloud storage allow me to download more music on my iPhone?  I purchased additional storage, but I can't sync due to being over capcity (16 gb).

No, purchasing iCloud storage can't increase the capacity of your phone.

  • IPhone Capacity "Other"

The past few weeks the "Other" part of the capacity line in iTunes has increased to 5.64 GB. I have an 8GB iPhone and I am now unable to add any more music and video. I do have a lot of Apps on my phone, but there is ony 234.1 mb of Apps. I have not restored the phone to its factory settings since I will lose all data. I really do not want to do a restore unless absolutely necessary. Is there any other way to go about getting the "Other" decreased? I used to see the "Other" portion on the capacity line very high once or twice and would return to normal when I would resync the phone to iTunes. That doesn't work anymore when I resync the phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any apps that you have purchased or free apps that have been downloaded with your iPhone should be available in your iTunes library. If not, you can re-download any apps that were previously purchased without being charged again - as long as you use the same iTunes account.
When syncing with iTunes, iTunes creates and maintains a backup for your iPhone - which is updated if needed (if any data included with the backup has changed since the last sync) as the very first step during the sync process.
The backup includes data such as most iPhone settings, email account setup info, SMS messages, notes, data created and stored by 3rd party applications, recent calls, call favorites, and photos that were captured by your iPhone - but I wouldn't depend on this one. If your iPhone includes any photos that were captured by your iPhone, they should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
Contact information, calendar events, and bookmarks are designed to be synced with the supported applications on your computer. iTunes content should remain on your computer as well as any photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
This data must be re-transferred to your computer via the iTunes sync process.
When restoring, your iPhone will be completely erased followed by the current firmware version being re-installed. After the current firmware version is re-installed, you will be prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup - which is the default selection. After your iPhone's backup is restored, this must be followed by a sync.
Before restoring your iPhone, import any photos that were captured by your iPhone followed by a sync to update your iPhone's backup if needed.

  • Ipod/iphone capacity bar?

How do you know when ur selecting too much music for ur iphone or ipod?
Why does the capacity bar in itunes only change after you sync, rather than changing when i make changes in my selections, so i can see how much i can fit. annoying. . Am i missing something??

    Hello rickfrommahomet,
Based on your post it seems you would like to know how to manage the storage of your device. I have linked to an article you may find helpful:

  • IPhone "capacity" clogged up with "Other"

    I have an iPhone 3GS.
Suddenly,I find that when I connect to iTunes, the capacity bar at the bottom where you see how much space is used, shows an enormous chunk (6.2 GB) of mysterious yellow "Other" and only 4.9 free of a 16 GB phone
If I check the capacity (usage) in the phone's settings, it shows all the audio video and app storage, yet that only adds up to 1.7GB, yet it still says 8.7GB is used and only 4.9 is free.
I'm not sure if this happened just randomly, or when I updated iTunes or updated to iOS 5. It also coincides with the battery running down at an unbelievable rate.
    Can anyone help please?

Create an iCloud account (you can do it on your phone) before doing anything.
Try Dave Hutch's idea first, it seems the best. If it does not work, do the following (this is definitely unofficial but not illegal).
    1. Search for Download iOS4 iPhone 3GS on google, and go to the Gizmodo page. The files will be on that page (I would link but not sure if that's against the rules)
    2. Find the .ipsw (those are the files loaded onto every iPhone providing iOS) for iPhone 3GS
    3. Save it in an easy to find place (like the desktop)
    4. Open iTunes with your phone plugged in. When your iPhone shows up, go to the Summary menu, and find the Restore key. Don't click it yet.
    5. Holding down Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) click restore. The Finder (or Windows equivalent) will open. Find that .ipsw
    6. You'll be restoring to iOS 4 at this point, so make sure you have everything backed up.
    7. Once iOS 4 finishes, eject your iPhone from the computer and plug it back in. Hit Check for Updates and you should get a prompt saying update to iOS 5. Do so and see what happens.
    Good Luck.

  • Iphone capacity bar shows almost full.

    Hi,
I just plugged in my iphone and noticed that the capacity bar in itunes showing 12.8G of "others", I know I have songs, movies, pictures and books, but noting besides those and I used to have 22G of empty unusable space, so how can I check what those 12.8 G are and how can I remove them.
I haven't added any new apps or anything since my last sync.

Just turned off and back on and my "Others" shows 0.56G, which isn't a huge thing.
I wanted to delete my post, but what's done is done

I am not sure that corrupt data is always the reason. I have experienced a few times that my 13GB green stripe of apps with a few MB of orange "other" has become a couple of gigs of green apps with 10 gigs of orange "other" or other similar incorrect number. It disappears either the next time the iPhone is plugged in or after a normal sync. Similarly I have had "free space" readings that are suddenly and inexplicably as much as a gig different than it should be. This also happens during syncing when it will commonly show an aberrant "free space" number which goes back to normal after the sync.
I suspect that iOS sometimes struggles with interpreting space usage and misreads are then lumped with other readings such as "other" or free space. Interestingly, this bug only seems to affect the green, orange and "free space" bars and music, video, and photos are not affected or if so much more rarely.
I would simply ignore the glitch in the space used bar unless usage problems crop up.

  • IPhone capacity only 6.89 GB

I upgraded my iphone to OS 3.0. That was 2 weeks ago. In iTunes, it has always said that my capacity is 7.01 GB. About 11 days ago, I was sent a new iphone because my camera crapped out on me. My replacement iphone says 8 Gb on the back of the phone but now it's capacity is only 6.89 GB. It is also running OS 3.0. I have tried to restore it and same 6.89 of storage is shown. What I don't get is why i have less storage on the same model of iPhone running the same iphone OS 3.0.
Should I swap it out again? That extra memory was a big difference, because I can fit my last movie on it.

Ok, So I just finished putting it into DFU mode and restoring. When It came to the screen to restore from back up or set up as a new iPhone, I disconnected it from my computer. same thing. I'm putting all my media back on it now. But would it make a difference if I went to settings on the iphone and tapped erase All Content And Settings? I'll try it tomorrow and let you know. But is anybody with an 8Gb Original iphone on 3.0 have this issue?
    Thanks for the responses.

  • ICloud collapsed my iPhone capacity

My 32Gb iPhone is almost full to capacity due to iCloud syncing everything down to it.  Anyone knows if it is possible to not syncing portions of the iTunes library?

yup, iTunes Match. Thing is I got tired of clicking download on each song I wanted.  Also of the delay time of downloading on demand over 3G.  So I clicked download ALL.  Now I can't seem to find a way to remove some of my library from the iPhone.

  • Under iTunes Summary, it shows my iPhone capacity for photos double the size it should be

When I last synced, the space shown taken up by photos doubled.
It nows says I have 92 photos (7.7GB).  I had just synced about 10 minutes before and it showed then only 46 photos (3.82GB).  When I now check via file manager, it still shows  46 photos (3.82GB), and if I view the photos directly via iPhone camera roll.. it still indicates there is only 46 photos.
The things I had done just before was to upgrade the iPhone to the latest version, and then I had just ticked, then unticked the manually manage video & music on itunes.. so not sure if either of those actions casued the problem.
So what could have happend to make the photos take up twice the space.  I would like to get it back, as I am now running out of space!!
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

A re-sync of the device should clear up the issue.
If not, try reseting or restarting the device, these will not affect the data on the device.
I doubt any issue actually exists, it is more likely just a misreporting of the information from the device.

  • 2 iMacs 12,000 miles apart and 1 iPhone - iTunes query

Could some kind person give me a blow by blow "how to" that a child of 5 could understand as to how I get the iPhone's apps. et cetera onto both iMacs without erasing iPhone stuff.
    Thanks in advance.

At the simplest level you just need to use one library, stored on a portable external USB host-powered drive.
Ideally this library should be backed up on each of your Macs using some form of folder syncing tool (sorry no suggestions as I'm a PC user) and in fact it then becomes easier to work with the locally stored copy of the library and use the external drive to keep the two clones in sync.
If you curently have media outside the main iTunes Media folder then you should first consolidate your library. If your iTunes Media folder is not inside the main iTunes folder then you'll also need to fix this first. (Post back for instructions if needed.)
Assume Mac1 is the Mac you currently manage your iPhone with. Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the external drive and then set up your syncing tool for future use such that it compares the internal & external copies of the iTunes folders and will process changes, updates, additions & deletions in both directions.
Take the drive to Mac2. It's probably best to move the existing iTunes folder here out of the way, then copy the library in from the external, set up the syncing tool and finally import any content from the original library that you want to keep before deleting the remainder.
Sync your internal & external copies each time you make the journey between your two Macs, just before you leave and when you arrive. Should the need arise you can also connect the external to any machine running the same version of iTunes.
One final provisio, most iTunes content can be accessed using relative paths from the library files to the media, so when you move/clone the library and access it from a different path or volume it all still works. However the folder that you can select for syncing Photos with the iPod works differently. Your iPhone should happily sync with just one of the two Macs or you can use a Photos folder placed inside iTunes Media and reselect the target folder if & when you want to modify the content.
