IPhone 4 with sporadic WiFi interruption

Hi all,
since month I experience quite some WiFi disconnects which least for 10 - 60 sec with my iPhone 4. Making phone calls via WiFi or streaming music is not possible anymore. This happens in different WiFi environments that the WiFi network itself is not causing the issue. At home with my Apple Airport running on WPA2 the disconnect happens every 3 - 10 minutes while other devices like an iPhome 4S, a PC and a MAC is working fine.
How can I troubleshoot WiFi issues now on the iPhone?
What I did so far:
Endless ping where you can see timeouts during the disconnect.
On the iPhone you can see the display switching shortly from WiFi to 3G and back.
In the Airport log you can't see any disconnects but you can see that the audio streaming was disconnected.
Sometimes I think that the Auto-Lock function is causing the disconnect but this is not any time.
I clean up the processes on a regular basis. The effect comes up even if you just run one app after a reboot.
I'm running the latest iOS (5.0.1) but had this effect as well before. It was working before but not sure what was changed as the effect begun.
I'm quite expert in networking but here I have no idea how to proceed. Is there a log file who is tracking the WiFi connection to see, what's going on here?
Any help is very welcome.

Hi all,
after some more investigation over the last 2 nights I could shrink the issue down to my profile.
I created a new apple ID and after a iPhone full reset I logged in with the new ID. Here everything is fine. No WLAN interruption. Then I went for another full reset with a restore of my old profile. After the iPhone spend the night in installing quite a few apps, the WLAN interruption was there again this morning.
Any idea on how to troubleshot the profile issue further or any idea on how to move my messages from one profile to the other? I don't have a problem in starting from scratch again with a new profile, just the messages (SMS) are missing.

If your Bluetooth is working, you may be able to tether your phone to another device, and backup that way. Either via iCloud or one of many Apps that send yourself a VCF file containing your contacts.
You may have to update to a later IOS via USB and iTunes, not sure if IOS 6 has Bluetooth Tethering.
I would have thought you could also switch off cloud sync'ing for your contacts, this should ask a question if you want to keep the contacts on your phone. An iTunes Backup and then Restore to your new iPhone should restore the local contacts. Then sync these back to the iCloud.

If you were using a Mac you could use a program but AFAIK there is nothing similar yet for the PC.
However, you should have a backup of your music, correct? Just restore from that backup to your computer (and, if not, at least this will teach you the importance of always backing up your music purchases onto writable media like DVD).

Iphone interfering with laptop wifi

When i am on my laptop and my iphone is connected to my wireless netowrk (linksys wrt54g) my laptop will connect to the network but it will not let me surf the web, it just stalls.. Why is this? if i turn off wifi on the iphone then the laptop starts to work.. Is there a way to fix this?

Hello everyone. I have personally found that the following tips work for me in my own home environment.
1. Keep cell phone 10 feet away from computers and just waring my BT headset. Depending on your cellphone plan you can easily have these calls forwarded to a skype line of some sort. Which will reduce the need of having to have the cell phone near the computers. You can also use certain software to forward SMS alerts to the computer you are using.
2. Update WiFi card and other driver updates for your personal machine.
3. Updating Router Firmware as some of the updates will help improve stability and performance. (Check your router manufacture website for more info on firmware updates.)
4. Changing the Radio mode from Mixed mode to a more precise mode. Like B/G only, G only, B only, N only, etc.
5. Changing the channel on the router from Automatic to a channel from 1 to 11. In hopes of hitting a channel that will pose less interference with cell phones
6. As stated earlier if needed you can activate Interference robustness on Airport Routers, and on the Tiger OS
7. Raising the router and re-locating the router to provide better signal will also decrease potential drop outs and disconnects with the computer.

Connect the iPhone to a computer running iTunes and use iTunes on that
computer to restore as a new iPhone which will wipe current content.

How to sync an iPhone 4 with a New Computer?

I have a broken Windows Vista laptop, an iPhone 4 with broken WIFI, and a new Windows 7 PC.
I'd like to backup the data on my iPhone somewhere, but the wireless iCloud backups won't work because my phone has no WIFI, and the old laptop I used to use no longer works.
So, does anyone know of a way to get my phone synced up with the new computer without erasing everything on it?

Thanks! I bought the backup app for Windows and gave it a shot, but ran into some issues:
5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your iTunes library).
This option isn't in the File menu, there's a "Transfer Purchases from iPod" that's disabled/not clickable, but there's never been an iPod plugged into this computer or attached to my iTunes/Apple account.
6. Right click your phone in the left device pane & select "Reset warnings".
7. Right click again and select "Backup".
These aren't options either, just "Eject" and "Restore from backup" are listed in the right-click menu.
8. Right click again & select "Restore from Backup", select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
I'm never prompted to create another backup.
9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your iTunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select "Merge".
When the process completes, the phone reboots and the same exact "Set Up Your iPhone" screen is present, and there's no option to sync anywhere.
The phone appears to have been wiped and restored correctly though. I took a picture after the initial backup using the 3rd party app to be able to tell if the data's been wiped or not. It's just not in sync with iTunes yet.

IPhone 3.0, the WiFi Login Panel and passwords that change daily

Does anybody else use their 3.0 iPhone regularly with a WiFi LAN that requires web login … AND the password changes daily? I connect daily to one that has Cisco authentication that I must get through each day with a different password.
The first few days I ran with 3.0 I was impressed that it detected the need to login and presented me the Login-Panel. However, I think the code/logic of this new 3.0 feature is, in the background, trying to re-login using the previous username/password I gave. If it felt the need to re-login that day, all is well. If it try’s that the next day, it’ll fail. No problem, as the next day it does present the login-panel again and I enter the new user/pswd combo.
However, after doing this for over a month now, about 20% of the time when I go to login in the morning my iPhone studders, crawls, and character echo in the login-panel can drop down to one character every 15 seconds. I’ve had to force power-off and reboot half a dozen times. Not always, but enough to make it a problem.
Anyone else encounter this?

No, I have not encountered that situation.
BUT.... I suggest you talk to the System Admin for the Cisco network and ask if they can move you to a user or admin group that does not require daily password changes, or perhaps 802.1x if security is critical?

Iphone connection with airport interrupted

Hello everyone,
I have a little problem with my iPhone 4 and AirPlay. I have an airport express that works perfectly fine with all of my devices except with my iphone 4. With the iPhone it constantly gets interrupted and even disconnected. I've been searching online for answers but all I get is people saying that their iPhone 4 worked great and the problems their having (similar to mine) are using 4S.
I'm pretty disappointed with the bad quality of things we're getting from apple in the past few years. :-/

I hope your tips help Chuckie, but I'm afraid I'm still seeing the problem on my iPhone. (Assuming that Chuckie is seeing the same problem that I am...) I turned on interference robustness, but that didn't help. Then again, I've got my iPhone sitting about three inches from my Mini, so I figured it should have a strong enough signal... I've tried turning off the various security features before, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. I have tried three or four different channels, but not all of them; I guess I could start going through the whole set one by one.
However, in the discussion thread I linked to earlier, several of us with this problem have been fiddling around, and have determined that this problem seems to exist with the WiFi hardware in a particular subset of Apple products, apparently mostly being the early Intel-based machines. (G4 machines so far seem to work, as do current Intel machines.) Moreover, the glitch is particularly sensitive to the latency with which transactions occur; web pages hosted on the Mac providing the internet connection only rarely hit the glitch, where the exact same page hosted on a distant site hit the glitch far more often. Due to this, I don't believe this problem is one of general internet settings; I'm thinking we're seeing a situation where the iPhone and the Mac are falling out of synchronization somewhere while waiting for packets to be transferred between each other.
BTW, are you suggesting that we should not use "internet sharing" with WiFi on a Mac? I've been able to use it successfully in the past on my Mini with other computers... I can understand that a Mac might have less range than a dedicated wireless router, but I didn't expect that it would actually not be able to be used as a router.

We bought the iPhones and Ipad so that we could send emails while we are out of the Office, but we are not able to do this unless we can find a WiFi connection. Incoming emails are fine. We use IMAP, for Business emails just incase this is relevant and I know that Hotmail is POP3.
Our technical IT knowledge is not great, so we look forward to your suggestions as to how to resolve this.

Contact whomever supports the email account and get the correct Outgoing email server settings from them.

Within a wk one of the new iPhones started turning on and of like 10 –15 times a day. Wk 2 it turned off and would not turn on again . It was my sons who was in college at the time so we talked and he took it in to a Verizon store where he was told I need to come in since the account was in my name. He was away from home , Verizon could see on account it was his phone they said it was not abused, they could not even turn it on , they sold me the phone give him another phone maybe even a loaner till he gets another. So now I need to go to store and explain to 3 different people this is my phone and my son has it and I need a new one. what a waste of time after about 2 hrs and talking to different people and yes they said there were notes on his account from other person he had talked to from different store. So I finally walk out with a receipt in hand and being told I would have a new phone in a couple days. As I sat in my vehicle thinking this is stupid I looked at my receipt and noticed it said droid on it so back into Verizon I went. The salesman said that’s what your son has on his account. My son had activated a friends old phone so he has one since VERIZON REFUSED to give him one. Another hr 3 people and yes they can see he had a new iPhone and notes on it from other store. Sometimes sorry just doesn't do it. I was now late for a appointment . Now I walk out and have been told I will get a new iPhone in the mail in about 2 wk Yes 2 wks again I bought it there just give me a new one and you send old one back. I will also get a new droid that I have to send back because they said they cant cancel it . In about 3 days I get the Droid and sent it back Verizon mistake and a waste of my time . After waiting over 2 wks and not receiving a new iPhone back to Verizon I went .
