IPhone browser chooses a tiny illegible font

I've been working on a number of web sites, trying to improve their "accessibility", including being readable on various smartphones. One problem that keeps coming up is that the iPhone often picks tiny fonts that nobody can read, and using the "pinch" to enlarge them causes the page to become much larger than the screen, requiring a lot of panning back and forth to read them. I've been looking for solutions, and not finding them.
In the cases I'm working on, I've removed all the tags, and the css does nothing font related except an occasional "font-size: bigger;" or "font-weight: bold". This should give the browser the freedom to pick whatever font it wants. With all other browsers, this produces readable fonts and automatic redrawing when the window is resized. But it doesn't work with the iPhone, and we get the tiny fonts instead.
I've dug around in the iPhone and various docs, and haven't found anything at all that deals with this. Is there something hidden somewhere in the iPhone Settings that would let us tell it to always use some minimal font size? If so, where is it?
(If this isn't the appropriate forum for this question, can you point me to a better one? I used this one because setting the default font sizes seems like a very basic thing that you'd want to do when you first start using a new device. Especially if you have a visual impairment. But I could be wrong.

Using meta name="viewport" content="width=320" did help, but seems to have some problems. One is that it only works for the "portrait" layout; when the phone is flipped to "landscape", instead of reformatting, it switches to a larger font that gives the same layout, but since the result has many fewer lines, there's a lot less information on the page.
I did a bunch of googling on the keywords, and found a lot of comments along this line, but no apparent solution. So I'll use it for now, until a better solution comes along.
The basic problem is that what it does is backwards: The server-side software is telling the browser how big (wide) its window is. This is obviously wrong in general, because the server-side code in general can't know the size of the client's window or screen. The browser is the one that knows the window dimensions, and should be sending the numbers to the server. This is something that has been a problem with the Web from the start.
A further problem with this approach is that it's guaranteed to fail some day soon. If Apple comes out with a new model with finer resolution, say 600x800 pixels, the above meta code won't work right. The history of display hardware shows such improved resolution repeatedly, and we can expect it with new iPhones in the not-too-distant future. My server-side code of course won't know about this, and will still send a meta tag saying to format for a 320-pixel-wide screen. If I happen to stumble across the new specs, I won't know which width my code should send to any particular client.
Actually, the real problem here is that the iPhone's browser appears to be violating the fundamental reason that HTML was invented. From the start, the basic idea was that text would be designed without a fixed layout, so it can be rendered on any size or shape screen. The text includes a bunch of tags hinting at layout details, such as the p and br tags to say where line wrapping should happen, the nbsp element saying where a space should appear without wrapping if possible, and so on. The browser was supposed to take this information, and with its knowledge of the available screen space, format the text so that it's legible. The iPhone's browser violates this by formatting to a window that's a larger size than the actual screen, then fitting it to the screen by shrinking the font size to illegibility.
The best solution would be some way to tell the iPhone browser to default to the original, standard browser behavior, and format the text for the available visible screen space, using the font size and colors that the user (who may have good or bad eyes) has chosen. I'm a bit surprised that nobody seems to know how to tell it to do this. Or maybe I just don't know how to google for it.
I wonder why there doesn't seem to be any way to tell the iPhone what size font to use for text? I don't know of any other browser (other than non-graphical browsers like lynx) that doesn't allow picking a font size. Even really dumb phones allow this, though the usually have only 2 to 4 font sizes. Defaulting to the very tiny font that I get for some pages seems like a bizarre, user-hostile behavior that one wouldn't expect from Apple.
But I still suspect that I'm missing something here ...

  • When printing from firefox, the page address prints in an illegible font. Same font also appears in certain field windows in the browser.

Why would the fonts in the page address print in an illegible font? It's a black background bar with a white jumbled cartoon-style font. The same font is present in certain field windows when filling out forms. I checked the fonts in preferences and it all seems to be correct and normal. Could this be a Mac issue?

There is a known bug involving printing in beta 12 that has been fixed in the Firefox 4 release candidate which is due out soon.

  • I upgraded to Firefox 6 random websites are using illegible fonts from my computer instead of the default. No issues with Firefox 5 or any other browser I use. Each time I open Firefox or reinstall it a different illegible font appears. Please help.

    Firefox 6 using incorrect fonts.

When I delete the font that keeps showing up as the default, a new illegible font appears. The fonts are not 'garbled' they are just decorative typefaces that are being grabbed from my computer. I have never had an issue with my fonts on old Firefox versions or other browsers like chrome, safari, etc., so I don't think the issue is my fonts. I also don't want to have to delete all the fonts off of my computer. I uploaded another photo of when I deleted the font that was appearing before. Please help if anyone has found a solution to this problem with Firefox 6+ :/

  • WebScan doesn´t work with iPhone browser

The C4780 web interface for scanning is very practical because no driver installation on computer is required for scanning. Just point any web browser to its internal web server, start the scanning process and download the scaned image as a regular element on a web page, all using web standards, right?
Well, wrong for the iPhone browser.
For some reason, the C4780 (and probably other HP multifunction firmware) has incomaptible/untested Javascript/HTML that doesn´t work with the iPhone browser.
On preview action I´m getting a question mark box.
On scan action - where a new browser window would open on a desktop - I get nothing.
Please fix that. It could be very useful for me since I can simply scan stuff directly to my iPhone without having to open a computer.
I also posted this message under Scanning Faxing and copying.
    Thank you,

On the iPhone, go to Settings...Safari...Turn Blocked PopUps off.
Worked for me with a PhotoSmart C4700.
It would be even nicer to have a simple iPhone app instead of using Safari.

No, there is no Java support in the iPhone. (There is javascript, but that's obviously quite different.)

  • Share Media Browser - only shows Tiny, or Mobile size, the rest are grayed

I'm helping a teacher with a movie in iMovie 09. It has all the latest patches. When I tried to use Share>Media Browser - only shows Tiny, or Mobile size, the rest of the larger sizes are grayed out.
Of course, I tried Mobile and it was pixelated when displayed at a larger size.
I'm not sure why this is. Can anyone help?

When you say what size is the source video, what do you mean, and how would I check that size?
I've just encoded the video in iMovie, into iTunes as size "mobile". The resulting file size is 27.8 MB. In iTunes, the info shows the codec as being H.264.

  • Eye strain - tiny little fonts!!!

Hi. I've been using logic 8 for a few hours today and I've already got eye strain from the tiny little fonts they have used. I have good eyesight and have been using my mac for days on end with no problems, but the size of the text in logic really does take the biscuit!! does anyone else have this problem?
Is there any way of changing in the font size? Any other workaround. I have never seen a programs with such ridiculously small text!!!

Just finished a day of using logic and I have to say it is unuseable for me. My eyes are O.K. and I can use laptops all day without any problem, but I think the fonts in logic are so small it's just too much of a strain. I will have to go back to crap cubase 4 - reluctantly because it's completely unstable.

  • When I sync iTunes between my iPhone 4 and my PC, does it also download my iPhone browser history to my PC? My PC is not a Mac and doesn't have Safari. Thanks!

When I sync iTunes between my iPhone 4 and my PC, does it also download my iPhone browser history to my PC? My PC is not a Mac and doesn't have Safari. Thanks!

I'm not sure but I think as browser history is just a series of URL links they would work with any browser. I found this info
    Symptoms
When syncing iPhone or iPod touch bookmarks between Safari and Internet Explorer in Microsoft Windows, the Favorites bar in Internet Explorer 7 and 8 may not refresh to reflect changes or updates to the bookmarks.
For example, if you sync Safari bookmarks to your device and then make changes to the bookmarks on the device (such as deleting some bookmarks, editing the web address, re-arranging the order of the bookmarks), when you then sync those bookmarks to Internet Explorer, the changes will not be reflected in the Favorites bar for Internet Explorer.
    Resolution
To refresh the Favorites bar, quit and reopen Internet Explorer.
Seems to indicate they work with internet Explorer

  • Tiny Unreadable Fonts

Often, when I start X, I am left with tiny, unreadable fonts.  This is not a window manager related problem, because the problem is evident in several different window managers.  This also troubles me because I cannot always reproduce the problem.  I've looked around for sollutions, but so far I've had no luck.  I am running the 2.6.8.1 kernel with vesa framebuffer.  I wasn't sure if this could somehow be a framebuffer issue or what?  I also read somewhere that if you startx without your monitor on, then x will default to a very tiny font  :?   I have a laptop, so this shouldn't be an issue..right?  Well..let me know what anybody thinks..
    Thanks,
    mike182

I don't know the solution, but I have a kvm and the fonts are different size if I boot focused (larger) than if I boot in the background (smaller).  I assume the latter would be like booting w/o a monitor.
There is a setting in /etc/X11/xorg.conf where you can specify the monitor screen size, you could try adding that.
You need to know your screen dimensions in mm.  I think 19" is 350mm x 260mm.
    Here is mine for example:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "My Monitor"
    HorizSync 30-95
    VertRefresh 50-160
    DisplaySize 350 260 #width height in mm
    EndSection
I just put DisplaySize... in to see if it changes the kvm effect, I don't reboot much and i have some things running so I cannot test at the moment.

  • IPhone email-need to change the font style, not just the size

My emails are showing in Black Arial, when I just want them to display in normal Arial font. I do not see where I can change the Font setting other than the size of it, I had it on Large but now have it on Small. On the iPhone the font appears in a regular size and not bolded except for the To and Subject lines. But when I look at an email I sent from my iPhone Outlook on my laptop, the whole email's font is darker (not All Caps, just darker), as if the letters are in bold font, but Black Arial versus Arial looks that way, but all my other emails in Outlook are in regular Arial so I would like them to be consistent.
I called Apple support and they had me re-set my mail settings and re-create my email profile, but it still did not help.

The iPhone does not support composing email in RTF or HTML, so the font type, size, or style cannot be changed. The iPhone's Mail client supports composing email in Plain Text only.
When composing email in RTF or HTML, the sender controls the formatting, which may not be displayed the same or identical with the recipient's email client depending on the email client used.
When composing email in Plain Text, the recipient controls the formatting.
What is your font setting in Outlook for viewing a received message that was composed in Plain Text?

  • How to make pdf of IE page without cutting off right edge or getting illegible font?

If I create a PDF from the Acrobat Pro X toolbar, it cuts off lines, instead of wrapping them as they are displayed and printed. Actually, it looks like they are folded back upon themsleves at the right side, as if there is no "new line" along with the "C/R".  If I print to PDF, I get illegible weird characters, almost as if it were a windings font.  I already did a repair reinstall, which is when the weird font started.  The cutting off started before then.
All PDFs I make from Office documents are still normal.  A PDF made either way from FireFox is still normal.  If I print from I.E. to paper it looks normal. Must be some weird interaction with I.E. 8.0.60001.18702.  Using XP.
Cannot find a similar topic that discusses this.  Using Acrobat Pro X; no updates are available so I must be current at 10.1.4  This is on a corporate PC, so I am limited as to what system changes I can make by policy. It's also a major deal to reinstall from disk, as the techs have the CDs and keys and must do it.  On the other hand, they are clueless about the problem.  Have not heard complaints about this from anyone else.
    Can anyone help?

Still have not heard from anyone.  I think there is something wrong with the forum pages at Adobe; this is the site where I have the problem.  If I use the PRINT ICON on the site or use F8 and print to Adobe printer, I get garbage.  If I use PRINT PREVIEW at the right, on the site, it is OK and it prints to Adobe OK.  If I use VIEW AS PDF on the site at the right, it is OK. If I use the CONVERT ICON in I.E. 8, it cuts off everything on the right, from the REPLIES SECTION on down.
So the work-around is to either use the VIEW AS PDF command at the right or the PRINT PREVIEW command at the right.  It still worries me that the CONVERT icon in I.E. 8 and any PRINT to Adobe printer command will mess it up.
There are some places at adobe.com where things still work correctly.
    Thanks,
    Jeff
