IPhone Disaster

Just installed iOS 7.1 and did a system restore. My hope was that in doing this I would resolve a lingering issue where my iPhone 4s did not have working wifi or bluetooth. After doing the restore I am unable to restore a backup of my phone. If I try to restore from my phone all I get is a screen that says "Connected to iTunes", if I restore a backup from itunes all that happens is the phone is wiped and I am left to start the process over again.
What I would like is simply get my phone back to how it was before this process began, it would be a major bonus if anyone could get my wifi/bluetooth working.

Have you tried to do a restore via icloud

  • Even turning iTunes Match OFF is a mess

iTunes Match on the desktop = awesome.
    On the iPhone = disaster.
Just a warning to everyone else. IM match is terrible on the iPhone. Playlists don't sync right (if at all), music is terribly slow to download, there's no album art or genius playlists, and it crashed my iPhone numerous times.
So I disabled it, restarted my phone, and synced it back with iTunes to return to manual control. After taking several hours to sync 3000+ songs, most songs still had the cloud icon next to them --> even with iTunes Match OFF. Playing one of them would still try to stream it/download it from the cloud. So I did a restore from last backup. After that completed, I reloaded all my songs AGAIN. Went to launch Music.app - and all I got was a blank white screen for about 10 seconds, and then it crashed. Did a hard reset, same issue. I could not play music on my phone.
Scheduled a genius appointment. Waited at the store for 30 minutes (past my appointment). After a quick diagnosis, he said that springboard was corrupt and I'd have to do a complete factory restore. He even advised against restoring from a backup after that -- he wanted me to start over and manually re-do all my settings and app installations (and lose all my data, saved games etc).
I took a gamble and did a restore, but then restored from a backup too. That seemed to work. I reloaded all my songs, iTunes match is off, and there's no iCloud icon next to any of my songs.
Bottom line - think twice before using iTunes Match on your iPhone. There are definite bugs that need to be sorted out. I literally spent most of Saturday syncing and restoring my phone.
Having said that, I greatly enjoy the service on my desktop - it keeps my work and home iTunes library and sync, and I was able to replace tons of old rips with fresh 256 kpbs tracks. But I won't be renewing if Apple doesn't get the mobile experience fixed.

I experienced the same "disfunction" when turning iTunes Match off on my iPhone and iPad - there were still all kinds of stale files and links to the "cloud" still hangning around on my devices. Also, after turning Match off on the device, when I connected the device to iTunes on my mac, looking at the "Music" folder on the iPhone and iPad within iTunes still showed all kinds of "greyed out" files (with song entries often duplicated 2 or 3 times) that could not be deleted - even when "manage music manually" was selected.
I was able to clean things up using the OPs suggestion of turning iTunes Match off on the devices and restoring from back up, so thank you for that.
All in all, I concur with the OP - iTunes match is fantastic between computers, but with iOS devices it is currently not ready for prime time.

  • Adobe .. Upgrade

This is a common issue I have found.
I purchased Flex Builder 2 a few months after it was released
and paid $500 for the Professional version.
The price of FB2 drops to $250 in November.
Here is a comparison of costs:
Purchased when FB 2 initially released.
    cost $500
    upgrade $300
    total $800
Purchased when FB 2 droped price in November
    cost $250
    upgrade $300
    total $550
    Purchase FB3 Professional now
    cost $700
Considering that many adopters of Flex had to push through
limited documention and minimal forum support by Adobe
professionals ( I am not talking about many of the good developers
that monitor this forum .. I am talking about the people that work
at Adobe that should be helping out in the forum) this is a slap in
the face and another iPhone disaster without the $100 refund.
I think that Flex is a great product but think very little of
Adobe as a company for pulling this kind of trick.
I tried calling the company for the past couple of days to
discuss this with them but hung up after over 30 minutes on hold.
I guess my only option is to spend another $300 to upgrade
all my FB2 licenses. Any company should rely on the good word of
the developer community to help build its user base. All Adobe
would have needed to do is offer anyone that purchased at the $500
price a special upgrade pricing to get it in line with everyone
    else.

All I can say is take the example of the iPhone. It went for
599 and within months it dropped by 200 dollars. Apple offered
anyone that bought a 100 store credit because of its actions. This
    situation is no different.
The problem is that Flex is the only game in town. I cannot
go shopping around to get the best price for the product. It is
sold in only one place. If I could have shopped around and ended up
with a high price it would be my fault for not shopping around
    enough.
I do not know how long you have been coding in Flex but
version 2 was a hugh change from 1.5. The documentation was
available but not all that clear. Those of us coding in v2 needed
to do a lot of digging and to understand how to use the product
properly. I made sure that I and all the developers on the team
went to the forum to answer questions to help anyone out. It is in
our best interest to spread flex as much as we can. I believe it is
the future of business systems. Much of what flex v3 is now was due
to the pains and frustrations of the v2 users.
That being said, I believe that Adobe should recognize that.
Obviously we will never agree on this and I know it is the cost of
doing business. But I don't have to like. I would have had no
problem if the product had been out for years and well documented
and supported. I know that it is typical business practice to raise
and lower prices but it is also in their best interest to take care
of those developers that suffered through the initial release.

  • Do the contacts store on the SIM?...

    Hi,
See if I can explain this clearly. I had the first generation iPhone, disaster. Got the new 3G and it is leaps and bounds better. I imported my contacts into my new 3G using a SIM card from another phone, then re inserted the SIM that came with the 3G.
Here's the question, when I hook up the 3G to iTunes to sync is it going to put all the old contacts and settings from my old first generation iPhone into my new 3G? I do NOT want it to do that. But I do need to sync my new 3G because I cannot use the Apps store until then.
    Thanks

If you have chosen not to sync them with your computer, then they are not on your computer. The iphone is not designed as a stand alone device. It is designed to sync with your computer. If you do not sync with your computer, what are you going to do if your iphone crashes - your information will be gone. You should sync your iphone to your computer.
The iphones manual describes the sync process.
    Page 10:
"You can sync contacts with applications such as Mac OS X Address Book, Microsoft
Entourage, Yahoo! Address Book, and Google Address Book on a Mac, or with Yahoo!
Address Book, Google Address Book, Windows Address Book (Outlook Express),
Vista Contacts, or Microsoft Outlook 2003 or 2007 on a PC. (On a Mac, you can sync
contacts with multiple applications. On a PC, you can sync contacts with only one
    application at a time.)
If you sync with Yahoo! Address Book, you only need to click Configure to enter your
new login information when you change your Yahoo! ID or password after you’ve
    set up syncing."

  • IPhone 3G + Vista +  itunes = Disaster ?

I got my iPhone two weeks ago by waiting in line for 3hours at an apple store. I was very excited to get it. I'm no longer excited, because my iPhone was put to restore mode four times already, because of the random disconnects during sync. Trying to sync is always a nightmare because itunes tries to remove my apps.. I even tried using Airplane mode but still disconnects from time to time.. The latest crash happened during the update to 2.01 software, in the middle it just disconnected for no reason (Used USB 2.0 : Don't tell about that). I use Vista, but then I had to use my XP laptop and restored everything. All my purchased music, all the apps that i downloaded GONE... I don't want to connect back to my vista system because it will put me back to bad state. There is no way for me to get all my stuff back from the XP computer, or at least I haven't figured it out. I don't care about the lost purchases, but my contacts are gone too.. That pissses me off... Come on people when you make software, test for bug in all systems. I am very angry. My iPhone is back in the original settings.. Time and money wasted. I will only use vista from now, I have to rebuild my contacts.. Redownload all the apps... Does anyone know how i can get my purchased songs and apps back through another computer ? Why do they make these things so hard, why can't i go in and get what i paid for.. instead i have to report these stuff and wait for response, that is usually a link or copy paste of FAQ. I'm MAD as HELLLL

Switching back and forth from one machine to another will just mess it up more. iPhone will only sync with one media library at a time, even if both computers are authorized on your iTunes account.
You could connect to your vista machine and restore from a backup, this should restore your contacts and such to the iPhone. I then recommend you sync and merge the contacts with outlook, this will now essentially give you 2 backups of your contacts (one for the iPhone and now they are in outlook).
Your purchases should all remain and be available to you, you can re-download apps for free, music is still on your computer HDD in the iTunes folder. Make sure your USB connection is secure and check with your computer manufacturer if there are any driver updates for your USB controller. Finally, try using another USB cable, it should not be disconnecting randomly during sync, this indicates either bad ports, bad cable, or buggy USB drivers.

  • Is there another bug fix coming soon. IpadAir, iPod and iPhone are still having many, many issues even with the last update. IOS8 has been a disaste!

Many features are still having issues, including basic iPad, iPod and iPhone functions that used to be rock solid. When can we expect the next SW releases?

  • Another iPhone 2.0 upgrade disaster

I'm sure everyone has shared their horror stories, but I'd like to start my own thread to keep responses in a location I can track. Forgive me if that irritates some users.
Upgraded my original iPhone software to 2.0 on the morning of Friday July 11. Phone went to "black" as most users experienced, emergency calls only. Around 4pm, upgrade was finally successful & I was able to use the phone again, access iCal, address book, Safari, etc.
Since that time, it's been one bad glitch after another. The ONLY applications I added to my upgrade iPhone were the following (most I've since deleted in the hopes it would make my phone work better, but it hasn't):
    MySpace for iPhone
    ToDo
    FiatLux
    Remote
    Facebook
    Twinkle
    Where to start?
Every time I sync it takes at LEAST 5-10 minutes, sometimes more.
Applications I've deleted keep getting placed back on my iPhone even though I tell my computer NOT to do so.
Address book entries that I've changed or deleted keep getting added back to iPhone.
iCal entries that I've deleted or changed keep getting added back too.
When text messaging, emailing, or using Social Networking sites like Twitter or Facebook, if I hit the "delete" key on the keyboard to back up in a message to correct something, the delete key gets stuck and deletes the ENTIRE message. Can't stop it!
Used to be able to add multiple addresses in text or email without cursor defaulting back to text box each time.
Safari freezes or kicks me out SEVERAL times during a session.
SLOW page loads, SLOW email push (if my emails push at all - I access Yahoo, Gmail and Mac accounts via iPhone).
Multiple copies of emails and/or photos being received by recipients.
Ringer volume and/or earphone volume not staying where I set it last.
Lost about a dozen photos from camera roll after upgrade, but other photos I'd deleted before upgrade are back on my phone. WTH?
Have to reboot phone at least once a day to get it to work properly.
I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of other things, but brain not working (need reboot for that too). Any ideas, suggestions, tips, etc. would be most appreciated.
Plan for right now, as soon as my father's funeral is over and done with later this week, is to DOWNgrade my iPhone back to it's original software, DOWNgrade my iTunes as well, and see how it goes. May in fact jailbreak the phone too, since everyone I know that's done that REALLY has no problems.
    I had no problems w/ my phone pre-upgrade. None. Now I feel like I'm stuck w/ a $300 brick.
    Help?!
    C ~

Oh, and all the podcasts I subscribe to no longer update automatically in iTunes.

  • Disaster, my iPhone 5 felt and I broke the screen.

As I wrote, it just felt down, let's say from 50cm and there is a line, in the screen, the goes from side to side.
    The touch works.
Is it true that apple will change just the screen (even at an apple store) or they will replace the entire device?
    I'm s sad...

  • IPhone Messages Disaster. Help desperately needed.

I have committed an unforgivable atrocity to my iPhone 5 (iOS 7). My friend and I were sending each other random words and, in my idiotic desire to be absolutely absurd, I decided to send him the world's longest word (over 186,000 characters!). The monstrous text was so long that it caused the Messages app to continuously crash whenever I tried to delete the gargantuan mess, lag whenever I scroll, and send texts slowly. I am legitimately scared for the fact that in order to fix it, I would have to lose all of the texts on the app (texts of which I find treasurable for personal reasons). I cannot delete the text without crashing the app. I was wondering if I were to take this in to the Apple Genius Bar, they had a software tool or the like that could edit what's on the app and clear the situation without having to delete ALL the information that I ever so hope NOT to lose? Also, if there's a quick fix, that would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you for your regards,
    Garrett

Nevermind! This puzzling scenario was conquered! The beast is slain! Turns out, I had to trick the app by selecting it, then scrolling up and loading more messages, and then select random smaller texts in the past and delete them all at once. Who knew? Success tastes delicious.

  • IPhone 3G with iOS 4.2 will  not work with iTunes 10.2 What can I do?

I updated iTunes from 9 to 10 without issue got as far as 10.1 all worked fine. Notified of update for iPhone (3G) 4.2 so, I went for it and all still worked well. I then upgraded iTunes to 10.2 and disaster struck! iTunes takes very long time to start will freeze when device connected then fails to see the iPhone. It now appears I may have updated myself into extinction. The latest from iTunes 10.2.2 is not working. I removed AMDS and reverted back to 10.0.1 and it worked for that day I thought I was good all I needed to do worked smoothly. A few days later I am back where I was a month ago with iTunes slow and failing to see device. I know the phone works as it just did a few days ago. I tried to revert to 10.1 and that failed now the AMDS from 10.0 failed to stay working. I can  lose the library and movies either on iPhone or in iTunes but, I need the other data notes, calendar, etc. Any ideas? Note: see Discussions on Apple Mobile Device Suppport (AMDS) for additional information or anyone having same problems with 10.2. Anyone think Apple may fix this in the future?

iTunes is not seeing device when connected. It simply freezes (Not Responding) for minutes then fails to see device.
I have previously uninstalled and re-installed latest from Apple 10.2.2. The only way I got that to work was uninstall AMDS and install version 10.0.1 this worked beautifully for ONE Night only. I am now with 10.2.2 that takes 2-4 minutes to start (non responding half of that time the first half just not shown by task manager) and cannot see device. I tried starting iTunes with devices plugged in and same issues. Windows (Vista 32) does see iPhone.

  • I have a previously registered iPhone 4s [first-time owner] and now suddenly requested to activate?

I have had my iPhone 4s since 2012, sole owner and never out of my reach.  Therefore, I am sure that no one else has had the opportunity to change any of the settings.  Below is a summary of the problem that i have been dealing with since Saturday, was working fine and I woke up from a nap and the "Activate iPhone" screen message will not let me bypass it, or actually get this thing to work.
    1.  iPhone 4s - Model #A1387  [previously registered in 2012, at the Apple store without issue]
    2.  as of Saturday morning, the same screen continually stays on, "Activate iPhone".  The screen "Requests the @icloud address that was originally registered with be entered w/passcode", which I entered and it goes back to the same screen or to "Cannot Activate Due to Busy Servers" screen.  I have been trying to reset this for 3 days, their servers cannot be that busy where I cannot get through once in three days [have tried morning, afternoons, evening, late at night, even 4AM on Sunday morning and nothing].  This must be a software failure and not something created locally by my phone, considering the phone has been operational for years without issue [for the most part] until the IOS 7 disaster.
    3.  I had previously paid for the luxury of the Apple Developers Account, to try the beta IOS 7.  After the GM was downloaded, it has had issues since, such as continually dropping the WFI connection, rebooting at random, apps crashing without reason, etc.  This is apparently not a stable master file coming from the Apple servers [all builds were downloaded properly from the Apple network and installed as per instructions].  But anyway, I have never changed any settings during this current problem; as the phone was simply sitting on the nightstand while I was recovering from medical issues and I took a nap in the late morning then woke up to this.  I am the only person here, so no one else could have messed with it.
    4.  My @icloud address has been the same since the .Mac & MobileMe days, so again, no changes there.
    5.  I can still hear activity in the background, such as emails coming in, etc but that is little help when you cannot even see what's coming in, doesn't look very professional.  My calls are going directly to voicemail and not ringing thru.
    6.  As requested by the screen on the activation, it suggests connecting via iTunes.  Well, that has been just as useless.  Using this method, I get popups stating that this phone cannot be connected and it's software must be upgraded to continue.  Well, I cannot get thru to the phone in any way, therefore I cannot download anything, make any changes, etc.  Again, it has been days now, and the same issue.  Apple and AT&T refuse to help with anything, of course, one blames the other, and vice versa.
    7.  One of the iTunes popups says that the software is out-of-date and must be upgraded, well that shouldn't be true because when I would use the update software feature in Settings it says that you have the most current version.  Again, sounds like a screwup somewhere.
I would appreciate any insight that you may have, I have searched the internet for tips but they pretty much just reiterate what I have already tried above.  Anyone else dealing with this?, there are a lot of others on the net have very similar stories dating back to mid-September.
    P.S.
I am getting tired of the Apple problems, too many to count.

Log in to the Developer forum. You will find instructions on how to install the lastest beta. Your problem is the beta you have installed has expired. All of them did on October 5; you will find hundreds of threads discussing this. If you have a beta it is assumed that you will continue as a beta tester, so a simple update using iTunes will not work.
If you no longer want to be a beta tester install the GM 7.0.2 by restoring from iTunes using DFU mode.

  • 10.5.6 disaster

    well, what a disaster
10.5.6 update via Software update failed. Since then I have been experiencing almost everything, from permission problems, Mail and iPhoto crashes, applications who use carbon lib not working anymore, Compressor says it's not been properly installed(I didn't do anything to it) you name it, I got it.
Called Apple support and they talked me through some permission repair which I had done before and they didn't believe me. The JAVA permission were not able to be fixed. The permissions sort of changed each other around and it looked like the problem was that a lot of the java installation works through aliases. Then they told me that the only way to fix this would be a clean install from my Leopard disc and then upgrade via the combo update to 10.5.6.
So there I went and bought a DNS-323 and two 1TB drives, picked up a $ 170 fine for not being buckled up, and slaved through the night to backup my system drive so I could format it. Then in the morning I formatted the system drive and re-installed Leopard. That worked like a charm. Then I went through various updates and SW installations and when it was up to 10.5.6 I ran into the same problem again. The update failed. Same message, update file downloaded fresh(I did not use any old files anywhere). Update can not be installed. Everything until then went fine. Heh, not a problem, just did the same thing again and headed for the standalone download of the combo update for 10.5.6. Just the download doesn't verify after it's been downloaded. Now, what I am to do now. I checked all the forums(the ones I know) and checked all the possible problems. I even tried to download directly connecting to my cable modem via ethernet after one forum entry proposed the download could be corrupted by the wireless router. Same result. Then of course I do wonder, why all the other disc images I downloaded and installed on the way to reconstructing my system do work, but only the 10.5.6 download from the APPLE site doesn't. Isn't that strange ? Well, at the end of the rope you've got to call APPLE. They've never let me down so far. But now, they did. Simply told me that my 90 days since buying Leopard are over. And that the Apple support guy who 4 days ago talked me into buying $ 700 of hardware and format my system drive, should not have told me that.
I've lost about a week's worth of time dealing with this so far. And I am not even in a position right now where I have the system up and running. I'll try to restore the system to a 10.5.5 status, again installing from scratch.
I haven't upgraded any of the other MACs yet and won't do so until I feel it is safe to do so.
I am running one G5 Dual 1.8, a MBP, two MB, an iPhone and not a single Windows box. When I left the Windows world it was for being tired to test their software they weren't willing to test on their own before releasing to their customers. If what I am experiencing right now is the NEW APPLE, then the ascent of the MAC world will come to a grinding halt very soon. If it wouldn't be for the 2 ft thick ice on the lake out there, that's where the MACs would have gone last night.
And all I did is to accept a System upgrade proposed to me by APPLE. I am deeply concerned about where APPLE is heading. Looks like we picked up a bunch of MS skills on the way to the top.
Anybody out there with similar problems ? I am especially interested in how I'd be able to download a valid copy of the 10.5.6 update. A couple of forums and blogs mention that there were corrupt update files on the APPLE site but the last time I downloaded was earlier today and I'd not expect APPLE not to fix a broken download file. So the problem must be somewhere else. But reading on all the MAC forums out there, it is pretty obvious that this is a known problem. Something went very wrong with this update.
And no, I am not frustrated, I am severely p...d off. I don't make money to fill the fridge from solving APPLE created problems for 4 days.
cmon, APPLE, get your act together and help us
    any help appreciated

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delayed response - have been away for a few days over the holidays.
I understand your point about backups and disk permissions. I do have a back up copy and will adopt using the 'verify disk' step in future; so, for me the loss shouldn't amount to any more than the time I have spent, as frustrating as that is. However, I think the point I'd like to make is that doing a disk permissions check is fine for those like me [or others on this forum] since I work in a hi-tech industry, and have worked in a Unix/Linux environment for the last ~20 years so understand about permissions etc. , but I know people with Macs for whom the key advantage is that the they largely 'manage themselves' seamlessly. So, if the verify step is simply a pushbutton check-then-repair step and omitting it can lead to such fatal errors, then why can't it be built into the update script as the first automatic step ? What I mean is; my computer reached this unusable state simply by pressing 'ok' on a planned update, so to the average-Joe user it looks like a 'stop and catch fire mode'.
For info: I have now used Disk Warrior, which is reporting a disk malfunction, but can recover the user data. It seems to be a remarkable coincidence though, because there were no system problems exhibited before the update.

  • My iPhone 5 won't restore, and I keep getting the error messages "9" and "1600."

So, today has been a disaster for my poor little iPhone. I have been at football camp all day, and my phone has been tucked away in my bag, so no physical damage was done to it whatsoever. At about 3:30, I checked it and it was working fine. At 4, when my camp ended, my phone was dead - with 80%+ battery. It wouldn't display anything, not an Apple logo, not a charge logo, nothing. So, I tried restarting it by pressing the home button and sleep button together for 20 seconds, and it didn't work. I tried doing it for 60 seconds, and it didn't work. So, finally, I get home and plug my phone into my wall charger in hopes of reviving my iPhone, and still no luck. So I've reached my last resort and I plugged it into the computer to restore it. I finally got it to show up, and didn't think there would be any problems. I started getting it restored, and no luck. I got error message 9. I thought it was just unlucky, so I tried again. This time, the process had went a little further, enough to display an Apple logo on my screen, but then I got error message 1600. Ever since then, I've been getting those error messages. I've tried everything. I've rebooted my Mac, changed USB ports, everything. Does anybody know what it might be? I know what both errors mean, and the problems that they are depicting aren't actually happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Cole

    Hi Cole,
I did some checking around and this article has some information on your error messages:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Error 9 says:
    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.
