[iPhone] Letter list like in Contacts App
Seeking i18n experts - and if you don't know what 'i18n' is then you aren't one
The Contacts app shows the letters A-Z on the list of contacts whether the contact list uses all of those letters or not. For fun I switched my iPhone's language to Russian and the letters on the contact list changed to an abbreviated list of the Cyrillic and Latin letters. It was abbreviated since the combined length of the two alphabets is too long to fit. Again it showed letters I didn't have corresponding contacts for.
OK, with that background, here's my question. For a given device's language setting / locale, how do I create the appropriate list of letters as shown in the Contacts app?
I've looked at all the NSString methods, NSCharacterSet, NSLocale and none seem to provide this list. There is a way to get something called an 'exemplar' character set from a locale but there is no way to extract the characters from a character set.
Any ideas?
So far I've taken the simple way out of just grabbing the first letter of all the entries in my table but that leaves out the letters that have no corresponding entry. And I don't want to hard code A-Z because then the app ***** for non-Latin alphabetic users.
P.S. Returning my phone back to English was a challenge since I had to pick the right Settings app menus with nothing but Cyrillic looking back at me

seems like those indices are present as localized plists in the AddressBook.framework (look for ABContactSections.plist).
I guess you could either duplicate those plists into your app or try to access them directly in the framework (which most likely violates the SDK agreement…).

Viber Contacts and Contacts App Sync Problems

Me (iPad) and my dad (iPhone 5s) are using the same apple ID, (but we live in different countries), recently all of the contacts from his phone has been transferred to my device. This has never happened before, so I decided he just pressed something that has synced our devices.
About 1500 of his phone contacts has been added to my contacts - after I deleted them, they were also deleted from his phone. I tried to backup from iCloud (the last restore was 2 days ago, while I still had his contacts), but it did nothing - I still had only my contacts. Then I restored backup from my macbook and the contacts appeared, all of his and mine, but the problem is that they appeared only in Viber and none of them appeared in Contacts App. I tried syncing again with iTunes and iCloud, but got the same old contacts without his, so I had to restore backup again.UPD: I've put contacts back to contact book by going into vibe settings and choosing which contacts to show.
But the sync problem still persists: If I connect to wi-fi or computer it syncs and Im getting my old contacts, not contacts from both devices

Contact app closing when trying to delete an address on IPhone5
When I've been wanting to edit out an address on the contacts page of my phone, the app closes the moment I hit the delete button. And the delete does not stick. What is going on?

It sounds like your Contacts app is closing unexpectedly when you try and edit a contact, and the edit does not take when you relaunch it. I would start by quitting the app first:
iOS: Force an app to close
Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open 'contacts' app
2) Choose some contac with 3 phone numbers and birth date
3) Click 'edit'
4) Click on plus icon near 'add new adress' field
5) Click on 'Postal...' field to focus it
6) Try to add in this field any number

The reset link for the security question will send the email to your rescue email account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312 - that is the email account that you are checking, and you've checked the spam folder on it as well as the inbox, and tried clicking the reset link again ?
If you aren't receivineg the email then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 link above to view your rescue email address to check that it's correct, in case you need to use it in the potential future use -
My iPhone 4s didn't do it until the latest update so imnpretty sure it's on the apple server some sort of bug maybe? Not sure. But whatever it is I really would like to download apps. It won't let me download any apps and my phone is brand new.
Sorry guysy iPhone says unable to download application at this time and I try all day and it still won't let me download no matter how hard I try.

The Contacts app continually adds last names that I edit out. this happens across MacBook, iPhone, and iCloud. I have even fully deleted the contact and reentered. I am about to move to Android !! From posts it looks like this is a common problem, but I've never seen an explanation or fix from Apple. Does anyone know how to correct this?
It is asking if you want to delete all the iCloud contacts off your Mac (not in iCloud).
Delete them. If you keep them you will have duplicates when you turn it back on. You will have the copy you kept and another copy when they resync with iCloud -
I "reply"ed to an e-mail message. The next time when I chose to write a new message and type the first letter of the person I replied to earlier, that name and e-mail address appears as a choice included in a pop up list of my contacts. The persons name is not in my contacts and I would like to delete it from popping up. Do you know how I can do this?
The Mail app on the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch does have an option to clear previous recipients. You can learn to live with it. But if you want to get rid of it, the only way to remove these cached email addresses from the Mail application is restoring the iPhone/iPod Touch as a new phone/iPod. If you restore from backup, the cache is also restored.

I have one apple ID for multiple devices in my family. I'd like to keep it that way for itunes/app purchases. I would like a simple step 1, step 2, step 3 response on what I need to do to separate all other features like imessage, contacts, emails, etc.
I have been reasearching how to do this on the internet, but I haven't found an easy explanation yet. My family is going crazy over each others imessages being sent to others in the family and not being able to use FaceTime because of conflicting email addresses. I have read that if each person gets their own iCloud account, this would work. However, I need to know what to do after I set everyone up with their own iCloud account. Do I make that the default email address to be contacted or can they still use their hotmail email addresses. Any help- with easy explanation- would be much appreciated!!We do this in my family now. We have one account for purchases, so it is used to share music and apps (I think that is in Settings/iTunes & App Stores). Each iDevice has this configured.
Then, each of us has our own iCloud account that is configured under Settings/iCloud. That then allows us to have our own Mail/Contacts/Calendars/Reminders/Safari Bookmarks/Notes/Passbook/Photo Stream/Documents & Data/Find My iPhone/and Backup. That Backup piece is pretty sweet and comes in handly if you replace your iDevice. You can just restore from it.
So we all share the Apple Store account but we all have our own iCloud accounts to keep the rest seperate or things like you mentioned are a nightmare.

Think of it as an internet based ("cloud") area for all of those items listed in my response. What you need to remember is photo stream only maintans the last 1000 pictures so don't count it as a complete backup solution for your pictures. Even though I rarely sync with a computer these days, I do still try to sync my phone with iPhoto (I have an iMac) so that I have copies of all of my pictures. 1000 may not stretch as far as it sounds.

So this is annoying me to no end because I just spent $25 to sign up for iTunes Match and so far its wasted my time and given me nothing but a massive headache. This is obviously a major bug on the SERVICE END, not mine.
Starting with an empty iTunes library on my Mac, I began ripping my CDs in iTunes Plus AAC format the other night with the intent of matching & uploading my entire music library into iCloud for streaming & downloading to my iPhone 4S on the go. Simple in theory, right? After some basic tag editing -- changing genres, a simple alteration to a title here, deleting the composer there -- and then updating iTunes Match (Store > Update iTunes Match), I notice I'm getting duplicates of a bunch of my songs appearing on my iPhone. I haven't downloaded anything to the device, they're all just listed with the cloud icon next to them.
So I'm thinking, whatever, I screwed something up. I'm only several CDs into the process so I'll just delete the iTunes library and start over again. Shift + right click, delete everything. Do you want to delete these songs from iCloud as well? Yes. Update iTunes Match. There are 0 songs in iCloud. Okay.
The songs are still showing in my iPhone Music app. Strange. Swipe to delete does nothing, they're not on the device. They're pointing to files in the cloud that are either no longer there or somewhere that I cannot access anymore. Broken aliases. The album artwork still shows up, but playing the songs just kicks me back to the album menu. Navigating to Settings > General > Usage > Music shows me there is no data on the device. 0 bytes.
One thing I notice is that sometimes after syncing a handful of these broken songs will show up in a "Purchased" playlist on my iPhone within the iTunes browser -- I haven't purchased any music from the iTunes store, not one song -- and inspecting them with right click > Get Info reveals them as Stream files, not iTunes Plus AAC files.
Turning iTunes Match off and on again both from within iTunes and on my iPhone does nothing.
Syncing wirelessly or via USB does nothing.
Backing up and restoring my iPhone does nothing.
Double clicking the Home button and quitting the Music process, then opening it again does nothing.
Hard resetting the iPhone does nothing.
This is something that's happening with my Apple ID on the service end, not locally or on the user end. As long as iTunes Match is turned on in my iPhone settings, all of this broken music -- everything I've matched to iCloud and deleted -- shows up. I've done everything within the parameters of proper usage, and iTunes tells me there is nothing in iCloud after it updates but my phone keeps seeing crap that isn't -- or shouldn't be -- there.
I WANT to use iTunes Match, I just paid 25 freaking dollars for it, but its completely busted for me right now and I know ripping and matching some more CDs is just going to make it worse and populate my iPhone with an even bigger broken library. I just ripped and matched one more CD an hour ago without editing any of the tags, just let iTunes Match do its thing, and then after right clicking and following the prompts to delete the 18 songs both from both iTunes AND iCloud its still showing up on my iPhone. Busted like all the others.
Can we please get an update on this as soon as possible? This is driving me nuts and I don't know what else to do.It's a slightly convoluted process.
Disable iTunes Match on your iPhone
Settings > Music > Itunes Match
Now, make sure you've killed the Music app by double-tapping the home button, and deleting the app there where it is running. Important step. The app should not be active.
Next step:
Settings > General > Usage (it takes a while to load) > then delete the Music app there
Power your phone down, and back up again.
Sync your music via iTunes like you always have ...
... and this should fix your problem. -
Ever since my upgrade to lion 10.7.3, and iCloud, my macbook is running extremely slow. What can I do? It doesn't seem like my contacts are pushing through to the computer from iPhone.
Then your basic issues are: too little RAM, incompatible software, dysfunctional installation.
Add more RAM or kill as many programs that you use until the computer is running normally.

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Spouses, Assistants, etc... don´t synch to IPhone "Contact" App. Why not? Is there a solution?
The Addressbook in Lion has entry blanks that enable one to list a person's relatives and work colleagues. This feature was also available in Snow Leopard and Leopard. These also exist in MobileMe, so when one synchs, the information from these entries are transferred to the Adressbook there. However there are no such entries on the IPhone's "Contact" App. so this valuable data does not get tranferred to the IPhone when synching. And the option to add fields doesn´t include these. Will Apple cure this annoying inconsistency? Do you experience the same problem? What do you recommend as an interim solution?.
Someone posted this solution that was provided in a different thread which so far has worked. For step # 4) I just put the iPhone in Airplane Mode which seemed to work fine:
Here is the summary of the steps I took to correct the issue:
1) Open the Phone and dial *228. This is a Verizon over-the-air programming number.
2) When the system answer press 1 for "Program or activate your phone"
3) Wait for the call to disconnect. You should get a prompt stating something like, "Settings updated."
4) Open the Task Manager and kill the Phone, Message, and Contacts Applications
5) Wait a few minutes (I waited 3 just to be extra safe)
6) Open the Message App to verify the fix.
If you are still broken, kill the Message App again, then reboot your phone.

Sync and the cloud not available yet.To transfer your data and settings to a new device see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2109. You can also use an app like My Contacts Backup to back up the contacts on your phone as attachment to an email that you send to yourself. If you need to, you can later open this email on your new phone and tap the attachment to import your contacts.

Upon Sync of contacts ( Outlook ) with iTunes, I see duplicate contacts being created and it is listed as Share contact. I see multiple contacts like this in my "From My PC" and "iCloud". Please help resolve this problem and how to avoid these duplicate contacts?

For the 2nd day my iPhone 5 will not let me download updates for apps. I've tried selecting each to click off wait, and have selected new updates indvidually instead of all together. Also have shut the phone down and have even deleting the apps completely and re-downloaded but to no avail. Each app continues to sit on my screen with the line below as if it is about to download but never does, and now any apps I've tried to updated will not let me use them.
Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
