IPhone URL Caching

I have an application that downloads a lot of data and stores it locally for off-line use.
I thought I could use NSURLCache for this. Just create a disk cache in a local directory and be done.
Alas, it doesn't work... When I create the cache, it does create the local directory, but when I then download a file with NSURLConnection, that file doesn't get stored in that directory. (I do call setSharedURLCache.)
Is there anything more I should to get the data that's coming down an NSURLConnection stored locally?
Or does the iPhone only support in-memory caching? The reason I know thinking this may be true is due to the following statement in the docs for NSCachedURLResponse:
NSURLCacheStorageAllowed
Specifies that storage in NSURLCache is allowed without restriction.
Important: iPhone OS ignores this cache policy, and instead treats it as NSURLCacheStorageAllowedInMemoryOnly.
Nowhere else in the docs does it state that disk caching can't be use, but maybe this is just the docs being incomplete?
If this is the case, then I can still modify the URLCache example code to get what I want, but I was just hoping that everything would just work without going through those hoops...
Thanks,
Tom

I have to work on this now.
I have to download an image from a URL and store it into cache. To be able to reuse them later in a UIImageVIew.
I will base myself on URLCache example and cross fingers everything goes ok

  • URLs  cache and applet context showDocument question

    Hello:
    I wrote an applet and realized that when I try to read from a URL using this code:
    URL Url=new URL(ReadAddress);
    BufferedReader Input = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(Url.openStream()));I was getting cached information from the web browser. So the problem was solved using this:
    URL Url=new URL(ReadAddress);
    URLConn=Url.openConnection();
    URLConn.setUseCaches(false);
    URLConn.setDoInput(true);
    BufferedReader Input = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(URLConn.getInputStream()));However, I wonder what about this?
    URL Url=new URL(ReadAddress);
    getAppletContext().showDocument(Url);Since in this case I can't tell to the applet context to use a specific URLConnection, I don't know if showDocument(Url) will show always the most updated document or could show also a cached one... I could try before calling showDocument:
    Url.openConnection().setUseCaches(false);However, I know this would create a new connection, and I don't know if that's the one that showDocument() will use or if it will internally use anotherone...
    Any idea?

    I don't know if I can help you with this.
    I am able to run the following applet successfully in my Netscape 7.1 browser on Windows 2000 professional. I am including it for you to try. Although I have a feeling it is probably similar enough to what you have already tried, my interest in this topic has to do with the fact that I am having the same error as you when I run an applet in Camino v0.7 on Mac OS X 10.2 and also an older version of Mozilla 1.0.2 also on the Mac. Like you, I don't see any error messages. The browser simply does not redirect to the new page. The thought here is that if you are not able to redirect a user using an applet that will redirect a user on my own Netscape/Windows environment, maybe then the problem will turn out to be one of configuration (? or not) and hopefully I can solve it somehow on Camino. In any case, I'll be watching this thread hoping for a solution for you.

  • URL cache problem in UCM and sitestudio

    Hi ,
    We have created Metadata Field : xPageName, and have configure an entry in config.cfg as SSUrlFieldName=PageName, Scenario is we have assigned abc.html to xPageName for a content item on suppose /oracle/cms1/ URL, by mistake we assigned abc.html to xPageName to another content item on suppose /oracle/cms2/ URL. Problem is abc.html is registered with two content item and on two URL's, and now we have changed it for /oracle/cms2/ URL to xyz.html, but when we hit /oracle/cms2/abc.html it is also served with blank page. Please suggest how we can get away with this ASAP.
    Thanks,

    That is definitely a limitation that each custom page name must be unique.
    If think what you are saying is that you have resolved this issue but the URL is still taking you to the wrong page...
    THis stuff is cached IIRC in some js files in the weblayout
    Have you tried, clearing browser cache, recreating the navigation in SS Designer, or restarting UCM and webserver?

  • IPhone Safari Cache Query/Offline Webpage Access

    Hi,
    OK so I'm thinking of getting an iPhone to replace my Windows based PCC phone.
    One of the things I use most is my eBook reader which I know is not supported by the iPhone and I can't find any software that I can use at present.
    I've had an idea and wanted to run it by anyone who can either try it or has an answer.
    What I thought of was publishing my eBook as a single page on my home website. Then I could use Safari to access the book as a HTML page and read it from there.
    My question is :- would I need to be constantly connected to the web (via Edge or Wifi) in order to read the book or could I just connect initially, have Safari cache the entire book as a web page and then read it 'offline'
    I'm particularly interested in whether I could 'reload' the book page after closing Safari e.g would Safari load the cached page.
    The books aren't very big, certainly less than a couple of meg so I'd hope Safari can cope.
    I definately be looking to keep the entire book to a single page so Safari only has to cache it once.
    Any suggestings, views, comments appreciated.

    Yep, that did it. Thanks!

  • Banner Page URL cached?

    Does the DPS viewer cache the banner located in the path for Banner Page URL or does any change that we make to the banner that is hosted on our servers get refected immediatey in the viewer?

    I'm not aware of the viewer caching the banner. The HTML changes you make should be reflected immediately in your banner. Are you not seeing your update? If so, I can ask around.

  • Iphone 4 caching previous email image?  Organize by Thread bug?

    Hi all,
    I have a user who noticed an image that he had opened in his email previously... appear in a new email that was sent out by someone else. The new email definitely contained a new image. I confirmed this by actually taking a look at the email in his Outlook versus what was shown on his iphone.
    The email happened to be within a thread (since it was the first email, I assume that it was cached even before the email was in a thread).
    So I turned off organize by thread and the image then appeared to be the correct one.
    Turning it back on... the image is still the correct image.
    Has anyone else seen this problem?

    No one has seen this?

  • 4.5 Gig 'iPhone Photo Cache'    eeeks!

    Hello all,
    How is it that I have such a huge amount of cache on my device?  Is there any way I can move this out?  My unit is almost fully filled up, 32 gig iPhone.  I can use that 4 gigs right now.
    Can I move it to another folder 'outside' of my synching folder on my iMac HD?
    Many thanks for any info on this.  I realise they are backups of my photos, but I have them also on my iMac.

    You can change which folder it syncs with in iTunes.
    While attached to iTunes, select the iPhone in the left pane.  In the right pane, select Photos.  You can select the folder or turn off syncing all together.
    Oops, never mind.  I thought you were speaking of the photos folder.  Sorry.

  • Can iPhone 4 cache e-mail activity until data service is available?

    If I am in an area where data service is unavailable - say, on a subway train - if I use the e-mail app, it complains that data service is not available, and any changes that I make (i.e., deleting a message, marking a message read, etc) is not saved or reflected against the associated e-mail account. Is there any way to change this behavior, so that the iPhone works more like other e-mail devices (specifically, Blackberry or a device running GoodLink)?

  • Clear iphone cache

    How do I clear deleted contacts and imessages from my iphone 4s cache?

    It will erase EVERYTHING. You then setup as a new device & sync your content back to your phone. Either that, or you live with it. The data will eventually be overwritten as you use your phone.

  • A New IPhone for My Business

    Hey-
    I have a few questions about this iPhone. I am not a person who understands this technical stuff easily, FYI. I have a MBP which has ben in TX (I think it went) for what were called "software problems" 4 times the first year. I cracked the LCD, which I had to pay for, but the fist year has been real tough on my mind, my business, etc..
    Anyway with the phone, I never should have purchased it because my fingers are too big. I never thought I had big fingers but even entering a Contact can take some time and talk about time--putting in a web URL is a real problem. I tried a stick, pen, pin, and none of them will set the thing in motion; if you know what I mean.
    My questions for now, because I know how some of you can get really bitchy if I ask too many questions; are:
    1. If I reset and/or turn off the iPhone 3G, is this a "good" thing like I was told it is god to turn off the notebook? If I reset the phone (because I am already messing things up and I have no idea what I do, will this erase all the info I have entered and the stuff that transfered when I transferred y contacts with the T-Mobile SIM card?
    Holding down the bar button on the top of the phone for longer than if I just want it to hibernate, will turn it off. I can tell because when I turn it back on I see the gray screen, the Apple, and the swirly thing like the MBP. When I hold down the same button and push the "Home" button (where the circle/square is on the front/bottom of the LCD) at the same time, it resets the phone. I think I have tis right but I am not sure if resetting the phone wil erase all the info I entered or transfered.
    I moved my Contacts icon to the first page (after trying abut 4 times) and it made al the icons shiver together, which was a bit scary but when I turned the phone off and back on, they were all nice and still and the Contact was still on the first page.
    2. If it connects to the internet already, what is the purpose of the WiFi, like when I push "Mail" and I am near y MBP it picks up on the Airport Express WiFi and asks if it should use it? What dos it use when I am not near a WiFi but I am able to surf the internet?
    3. Does anybody know if there is a way to lower the sensitivity of the screen and keep the phone on longer?
    4. Finally, what about a case that covers the screen too? They did not have one at the AT store.
    Thanks!
    More to come.

    A reset is a good idea to do occasionally, as that clears the iPhone's caches, etc. A reset is when you press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons for ~10 seconds (until you see the Apple logo, ignore the slide to power off prompt). That won't affect your data. You would only need to do a Restore in iTunes if you have problems with the phone (I've never needed to Restore).
    Holding down the bar button on the top of the phone for longer than if I just want it to hibernate, will turn it off. Yes, that's right. See above - no loss of data with either power off or reset.

    Yes, press and hold any icon until the all wiggle to rearrange them, or drag them from one home screen to another.

    Wi-Fi is faster than cellular data connections. Also, the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (the iTunes icon/app on your phone) only works on Wi-Fi. The iPhone's order of preference for data connections is Wi-Fi > 3G > EDGE > GPRS (the last 3 are cellular data networks from fastest to slowest).
    3. Does anybody know if there is a way to lower the sensitivity of the screen and keep the phone on longer?
    You can decrease the brightness in Settings > Brightness by turning off Auto-Brightness and setting the brightness lower. If you mean the Auto-Lock (where the screen shuts off by itself) you can make that longer or turn it off in Settings > General > Auto-Lock. Higher brightness and a longer interval for auto-lock means more battery use.
    4. Finally, what about a case that covers the screen too? They did not have one at the AT store.
    There are many. Try the Apple Store, in person or online.

  • My iphone won't allow me to transfer any music. A lot more problems follow in the below paragraph

    Hello all,
    I really appreciate any help and advice I can get.
    First my iphone won't allow me to drag music over to it. I'm old school and I like to drag specific tracks over to my iphone. iTunes won't let me do that. I have tried creating a new playlist and syncing again but still I can't do that. Any help or ideas?
    Also, I keep getting the message that "x number of items could not be synced. See iTunes for more information". What does this mean???? I read some where that clearing the photo cache can help. One problem, I CAN'T FIND THIS PHOTO CACHE!!!!! Where is this thing. I read that you need to click "go" on the iTunes menu. My menu doesn't say go. What's going on? How to i find the iphone photo cache and get rid of that annoying message?!?
    Also, before I get to any of the stages above, sometimes during syncing on iTunes with my iPhone 4S, it keeps getting stuck at "waiting for changes to be applied". Once again, anyone have ideas about how I can overcome this?
    Please I need someone to go on before I throw this phone into the thames.

  • Configuring the iPhone and your environment for wireless corporate email

    I'm posting this as a top level thread, because I'm certain that there are others out there, who like me, are trying to figure this out.
    Configuring the iPhone for Enterprise Use
    With Apple’s release of the iPhone, IT organizations are presented with an interesting challenge. Senior execs, gadget heads, and technoratti are all flocking to this device, heralded as the be all and end all of smartphone telecommunications technology. As these devices begin to flood into our organizations, we are met with the challenge to ‘make it work’.
    After much explaining that the iPhone is not intended for Enterprise integration, and many discussions surrounding the technical feasibility of bringing said devices into the fold, and being the resident Mac and Linux head with an iPhone in hand, I decided to embark on the mission of making one ‘work’. I succeeded in part, however it’s not the kind of ‘work’ that is going to be viable for most end users.
    First of all, it’s important to understand that the email client for the iPhone is a modified version of Mac’s Mail program. Not the best client in the world, but it does support Exchange integration. It also does external email sources, such as Yahoo and gMail, very well. For my interest though, I’m focusing on the Exchange integration functionality, as that is just about everyone’s corporate standard.
    Bringing this task to fruition requires some understanding about the limitations of the iPhone, as well as some of its current quirks. Wireless802.11x, EDGE, VPN and Mail are all components necessary to provide a serviceable solution for mobile email access, and each of these things has some peculiarities that don’t appear to be fully worked out by Apple at this time.
    For instance, within my organization, we have a secured wireless connectivity option available within our building; however, the SSID of this network is not broadcast, for the obvious reasons. SO, connecting the iPhone to it is a manual process of defining the network, and automatic reconnection seems to be very hit or miss, so it becomes far less of an option for any form of direct network access to your Exchange environment. (As an example, I had to redefine that network, on the iPhone, at least half a dozen times during this process.)
    The other components have equally quirky issues, and I will discuss the how’s to get around them below.
    In coordinating this into a cohesive plan however, I will break this into three sections;
    1. Wireless and EDGE connectivity
    2. VPN access to your network
    3. Connecting to Exchange
    So, without further ado;
    Wireless and EDGE Connectivity
    The wireless capabilities of the iPhone are, on the surface at least, excellent. It connects seamlessly to unsecured networks, offers the option of prompted or unprompted automatic connectivity, and is capable of 802.11G performance. Not bad for such a small package. However, it is very limited in the forms of secure network access it supports. These are, to quote Apple’s website; (and my iPhone)
    WEP Password
    WEP hex or ASCII
    WPA (personal)
    WPA2 (personal)
    Now, due to the obvious security problems in implementing WEP security, it’s likely that any network you run into is going to be WPA or WPA2. The iPhone ONLY supports the personal versions of these protocols, so be aware of this going into the situation. If you’re not connecting to your work or school wireless, and you’re entering the information correctly, then it’s probably because they have the Enterprise version of one of the protocols enabled. If that is the case, then you’re either hunting for unsecured hotspots, or else depending on EDGE.
    In my case, I did have access to a WPA2 (Personal) enabled wireless signal to connect to my internal network. I thought my problem was half solved! I defined the connection, the wireless capability of the phone worked perfectly, and I was connected. I was wrong. Apparently, and judging from the Mac forums I’m not alone in this, the iPhone does not do a very good job of RE-connecting to a secured wireless network. It does an even worse job, when this is coupled with the fact that it doesn’t do a very good job reconnecting to a wireless network with an unpublished SSID.
    After much fiddling and research into this, I determined that this simply was not the way to go, and I abandoned the idea. I wasn’t about to compromise my network security in order to get this silly phone working! So, that left me with either unsecured WiFi, or EDGE.
    Either one of these connects pretty seamlessly, and gives me a relatively decent Internet connection. There are some issues being reported of the iPhone swapping between EDGE and WiFi for not apparent reason, but that said, it can still be made to work.
    Now that I had this connection outside of my network, I obviously had to consider options for getting a secured connection into my network, which of course leads us to;
    VPN Access Into Your Network
    Being that this device was touted as the ‘real internet’ I was very excited to see if I could achieve this connection through my SSL VPN appliance. To make a long story short, I could not. Because Apple’s idea of the ‘Real Internet’ apparently does not include those wacky concepts like Java support, this proved to be impossible. My Apple cohorts will scream that it does support JavaScript, but we all know that that and 2 bucks will get you a small coffee at Starbucks… and not much more.
    (The iPhone also does not support Flash, but that’s a topic for another conversation. I know, how could they leave that out? I’m amazed too, but then Steve Jobs always has been a bit too arrogant for his own good… I mean what does he expect, we’re all going to rewrite everything into QuickTime??? Please.)
    Since that option didn’t work, I was left with the wide selection of two possibilities provided within the iPhone software. Either, a PPTP or L2TP VPN tunnel.
    We went ahead and configured a PPTP connection on one of our Cisco routers in order to test this. It didn’t work. I couldn’t connect to it. Tried and tried. Nada. SOOOO, we said OK, and configured a L2TP connection on one of our Cisco routers, with similar results.
    Figuring that this was something in the config, we called Cisco, and did the technical support dance with them for several days, trying one thing after another to get this connection to actually work. Nothing helped, and it never worked using either protocol. Then, I noticed an obscure article somewhere on some website that said something to the effect that getting one of these tunnels to work from the iPhone to Cisco was nigh on impossible.
    About the same time, my senior network guy said screw it, let’s put this on a Microsoft server. And so we did. Now, this is interesting in it’s own right, because configuring out of the box L2TP or PPTP on a Microsoft server results in a default authentication method of Windows Authentication. This does not work for the iPhone, because it has no idea what to do with the Windows security token it receives. So, you authenticate, and then are immediately dropped due to an inability to communicate with the PPP server.
    Fortunately, we (as do most organizations) have a Radius server. We selected Radius authentication, configured both sides of the Radius authentication setup properly, and launched the PPTP tunnel…. AND…. EUREKA!!! The iPhone’s VPN software connected, authenticated, got an IP, and I was on the network! Well, no.
    After about 2 seconds, I realized that while I did indeed have a connection, I couldn’t do anything with it. Couldn’t even browse to an internal site via IP address. The connection was up, the connection was working, the connection was useless.
    So, we decided to give L2TP a shot. Configured it pretty much identically to the PPTP setup, used Radius, launched the iPhone client, and finally, after many days of screwing around, it worked. Now all I needed was to get my email working, so I started working on;
    Connecting to Exchange
    In the Mail program on the iPhone, the first time you launch it, you’re presented with the ability to configure an email source. However on subsequent or additional accounts, you must go under Settings, Mail to get to this functionality.
    Going into the Mail configuration, I selected an additional account, the account type is, of course, Exchange. The configuration components are pretty obvious, however some things of note are;
    Do NOT include your domain information in the User Name field
    For all Host Names, use the fully qualified domain name of the server, or else IP
    You WILL need to have SMTP enabled somewhere in order to send email
    Anyway, I set all this up, and nothing happened. It said that my server was not responding. Did a little research, and it turns out that the only way to connect to Exchange is through an IMAP4 connection, and just in case you didn’t know, IMAP4 is disabled by default, so you have to enable and configure it.
    Went onto the Exchange server, set the service to Auto, Started the listener, and finally, at long last, EUREKA! I finally had Corporate email on my iPhone, connecting securely, and not sending anything plain text anywhere. Hooray!
    Now for the problems with this solution;
    First of all, it depends upon VPN access into your environment, something that you may or may not be comfortable with. One good thing is that the iPhone does prompt for password to reconnect, and will tie the continuity of the VPN connection into the general phone lock security, such that an inability to provide the appropriate access code to a locked phone results in the VPN not being accessible.
    The VPN of course is dependant upon a reliable network connection. I’ve noticed that it’s somewhat graceful in switching between WiFi and EDGE, however it’s not totally graceful, and you can experience some hinky things, like being able to send and not receive, or the mail client saying ‘Connecting’ for about 5 minutes before it figures things out.
    The best cure for this is to simply stop and restart the VPN connection. Note that when you reconnect, the first attempt will prompt you for a numeric password, this is meaningless unless you have the device lock turned on. Just enter anything. (I think this is another bug) THEN it will re-prompt you for your real VPN password.
    This solution for email delivery is obviously dependant upon the VPN connection being active. I’ve noticed that at times the iPhone will disconnect the VPN (probably when service switching) and not bother to mention it. When that happens, of course the VPN must be restarted.
    For the lazy, this is an inconvenient solution because while it would appear that the iPhone will cache the VPN password, in fact it will not. That means that each re-launch requires that you re-enter your password. Not terrible for me, but I could see it being very tedious for the average corporate user.
    The OSX Mail client has several little deficiencies, which may or may not impact your use of the device in this manner. For instance, if you have subfolders defined for your inbox, and server side rules to move mail into them, then you will not see any synchronization of that mail until you actually select the subfolder. Also, since there is such poor management of attachments and downloads, moving anything around via email on this device is nigh on impossible.
    EDGE access to your corporate email, via a VPN, is a bit sloooooow. It works, it’s certainly fast enough for my purposes, but it’s not the slick quick access that we’ve all become accustomed to with Blackberry and Good devices. The lack of 3G support becomes a very noticeable shortcoming here.
    (Why Apply didn’t simply partner with Good Technologies to crank out a client for this thing, I’ll never understand, but I guess you can refer to my comment above about certain people’s arrogance.)
    The biggest problem of all of course is that it’s simply klugey. I hate klugey. But, with the capabilities at this device’s disposal, and given Apple’s ambitious, if a bit idiotic, stance that no third party will develop software for the iPhone, then this is about as good as it’s going to get for now.
    It is my understanding that overseas there is some initiative underway to provide a more seamless Visto or Synchronica integration for enterprise email. However, given Apple’s unbelievably restrictive agreement with ATT regarding this device and the OTA necessity of delivering the client, I seriously doubt if we’ll see this in the near future in the US.
    But I digress, so…
    In Conclusion
    This solution is not for the faint of heart, it doesn’t work all that well, and it has way too many moving parts that are subject to failure. However, I would say that this solution is serviceable for the corporate technology professional who needs email, and really, REALLY wants the other features of the iPhone. (ie, phone whores such as me.) It requires patience, it requires an understanding that this is not a 100% thing, and there definitely needs to be a prebuilt expectation that this device will not serve your email in anything approaching the manner to which you’ve become accustomed.
    As long as all of that is okay though, then go right ahead, set it up, and enjoy!
    The Short Version;
    (I put this at the end because I want everyone to feel my pain!)
    Wireless:
    Use unsecured wireless or EDGE. Secured wireless may be serviceable as long as the SSID is broadcast, but there are known issues with this.
    VPN:
    L2TP, shared secret, running on Microsoft server, with Radius. (May work elsewhere, but doesn’t seem to run on Cisco at all) Accounts enabled for external access.
    Exchange:
    Configure IMAP4 Virtual Server on your Exchange environment, ensure that you have some SMTP resource for outbound email, use fully qualified domain names for all servers (or IP) in the mail config and do not include any domain prefix or suffix for user accounts.

    Thanks, now I understand why the wifi keeps dropping. On my personal wireless network, it also seems the distance from the access point is not good compared to my laptop. At work our network & exchange teams don't seem to have the desire to struggle with this "toy" until customers start forcing its adoption. I am using OWA and it works fine over EDGE. I will share your posting with them.
    Thank you again.

  • Can't sync any artwork with iTunes 11.1.3 and iOS 6.1 iPhone 4s

    I have seen something of similar topic, but not to my exact situation.
    Like the title says, I have recently taken the plunge and upgraded to Mavericks which required an iTunes update (11.1.3) on my Mid2010 Macbook Pro. I have not upgraded my iPhone 4s to iOS 7 nor do I want to. I have an immaculately kept music collection that had all of the correct album artwork and was visible in iTunes. Upon upgrading iTunes, music was syncing to my phone but none of the artwork was making its way to the phone. So I figured to completely remove the music and redo a full music sync but now NO music has the correct artwork and the artwork either appears blank or has the completely wrong artwork. So then I tried resetting all of the settings on the iPhone but that has also had no effect on the music artwork syncing.
    Is this a known issue in iTunes 11.1.3 specific to iOS6.1? And in order to get artwork will I have to bite the bullet and upgrade to iOS7? Also is there a way to rebuild iTunes or iPhone artwork caches?
    Any help or redirection to another thread is appreciated.

    I forgot to say the problem iTunes tells me is:
    iPhone can't be synchronised because it can't be written to or read from.
    Or something like that..
