IPhoto 08 to 09 Migration --- Images have disappeared?

Hi -
I upgraded my iPhoto 08 to 09 last week. Things went smoothly - I thought. Now, when I click on SOME photos (not all) -- the thumbnails are appearing -- when they enlarge, a large exclamation point appears in black and white.
Any ideas on what to do?
Thanks
kmw

iphoto library manager took all day and all night to rebuild my library .... I finally had to stop it because I am leaving for the week (it was on faces rebuild - which I didn't care about, as I have barely done any faces recognition stuff yet). Anyway, I went into the folders where I knew previous photos had been missing and here's what I found:
1) Some photos were missing altogether (these appeared in the iphoto library manager's missing photos log) --- I will have to manually load these now, right?
2) Some events are completely gone (I know one of these was where photos were appearing missing).
Do I need to run rebuild when I have 48 hours to let the entire program run?
Also - this has crossed my mind:
Several weeks ago, I posted here about needing a second file of photos on my computer (in folders - my copy of my photos from my PC) and everyone responded that I did not ---- I have a sneaking suspicion that those photos WERE linked into iPhoto and now that is why some photos were missing? Although i'm not sure how all photos were not affected then?
What is my next step? Rebuild the library is the places where I know photos are missing? Is there a way to open my original library (where at least thumbnails of all photos were showing) and somehow get a list of all events out of it, so I can open the rebuilt library and identify what is missing for sure? I don't want any photos to get lost in the mix. It seems I should start from my rebuilt library to do this manual rebuilt? OR is there a way to trace back my original library to the missing photos (luckily, I still have my PC folders on an ext. hard drive), as this has some of my projects, etc, that I would like to keep?
Thanks for the help.

  • My images have disappeared in iPhoto

    10.9.5/imac/2.7 GHz/8GB memory
Over 3/4 of my images have disappeared from iPhoto. Have been through all the usual iPhoto repair methods but absolutely nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • The thumbnail images have disappeared from one of my sequences

I have 3 sequences open in the timeline and the thumbnail images have disappeared from the clips in one of them. It's very frustrating to work without them, how do I get them back?

Thanks so much! That actually wasn't it though... The thumbnail display was already set to 'name plus thumbnail' but 'track size' was set to 'custom'. Once I changed 'track size' to 'small' (which is what my other sequences which were displaying thumbnails were set to) the thumbnails reappeared. Yipee!!!!

  • All my images have disappear and how do I get them back

All my images in all Firefox pages have disappeared. You used to have a button that you could check off to load all images automatically. But its not there in this version on Firefox V24. Worse when this computer a laptop, sync with my desktop computer all images disappeared there as well
How do I get them back, and don't tell me I have to give permissions for each page, as I tried that and it didn't work either.

The setting is a little harder to access now, but here's how you do it:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''perm''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) If '''permissions.default.image''' is bolded ("user set") or for some other reason not set to the default value of 1, right-click it and choose Reset.
To confirm that this worked, you can switch back to the other tab and reload. Success?

  • IPhoto won't open and images have disappeared

    Hi,
I'm at a complete loss on where to start with my problem. This week I bought an external hard drive and set up Time Machine to back up my files because I had not done this and didn't want to lose anything important.
Today I tried to open iPhoto and I get a message asking me 'What library do you want iPhoto to use?' but there are no libraries to choose from
I've looked for my original images and can't find a single one. It appears that I have lost every photo I ever uploaded onto my Mac and when I look in Time Machine and on my hard drive the pictures folder is empty. I'm now getting messages that I don't have the permission to view the contents of folders, even though I am the administrator for my computer.
Being new to Time Machine I don't know if i went wrong somewhere, but i thought the whole point was that it's easy and backs up your files. I'm now wishing I hadn't bothered as I have lost the first year of daughter's life in photos. Gutted doesn't even start to cover it.
Can anyone help? I don't really know what to do or where to begin as I'm not all that techical.
    Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the tip. I did a fair bit of research and used Data Rescue 3 in the end. It's done a pretty good job of reconstructing files as far as i can tell (around 90gb worth) - i could preview the Jpegs and while some were corrupted there were a lot that werent. However I cannot preview the RAW files through Data Rescue. my question now is this: is it safe to boot up my iMac and view them on there (the recovered files are on an external hard drive) or could this risk any overwriting of the existing data on the internal hard drive? Or should I check them on another computer ? If so, is it safe to plug the HD into a pc to view and will that work?
I don't want to do anything to risk these precious files until I have them backed up... And is there a way to safely copy them to another hard drive without using my iMac?
    I hope I'm making sense...

  • My IPHOTO images have disappeared and nothing happens when I click on it.  I'm freaking out as I have all my holiday photos on this and I don't know what I did.  What should I do?

    Question:  IPHOTO
I cannot get my Iphoto up when I click on it.  I'm freaking out
as I have all my holiday images on it.  I don't know what I did.
    Can anyone please help????

If your Dock icon for iPhoto is not working, go to Applications and try opening iPhoto from there.
Then once the new iPhoto icon appears on the Dock, control click on it, select keep on Dock and drag the other old icon off the dock.

  • Video clip images have disappeared in the timeline

Hi - I was working away on an event in FCPX when I noticed that the timeline no longer showed any of the clip images - just the sound waveforms.  The video is visible on the canvas, and can be edited, but there is just a segmented blue nothing where the clip images used to be.  This is a new one - anyone experienced this before, or have an idea what's causing it?
    Thanks!

Thank you very much, Tom, for your very clear reply!  It worked using the Option-Command reset of preferences.  Interestingly, when I clicked on Close to shut down FCPX, this is what popped up. I have no idea what "background tasks" were being undertaken.  Although the app disappeared from the screen, it remained live in the dock and had to be force quit.  Do you think it's possible that some not-deliberately-invoked process removed the clip images, and if so, what it might be?  I can trip on a bare floor, but don't usually send an app off accidentally!

  • Many of my images have disappeared while trying to export/convert a file down to a PDF

I am making a portfolio for a submission, so when I finished, I was converting/saving it to a PDF file. I was trying to make the file smaller as to fit in the required submission size. As I was doing that, many of my images disappeared. A lot of them seem to be images I brought over from Adobe Illustrator. Some linked files are gone, while others remain. I am confused how this happened. Even some text that I generated within InDesign is now gone. I sadly saved before I realized this, so when I reopened it, the blank pages remained. Some of the images though have the context/frame boxes still, but no images. Any help?
I'm using InDesign 2014 and I am using a MAC

Can you detect the missing images in the Links panel?

  • Layering images have disappeared

I imported a file into Elements. For some reason when I am making text and graphic changes to the new image...I dont see the layering boxes show up on the right hand column to view the additions...have I turned something off inadvertently...they showed up in prior edits of other pictures...
I am importing a .jpg file and working on that.
Thanks very much for your input

Look at the main menu, all the way at the top of the screen. Under Window, scroll down and select Layers. It sounds like the palette just got "put away."

  • All my photos have disappeared from iphoto!!! I can find them in spotlight

    Hello All! Help!
I was importing photos from a compact flash card into iphoto which was successful. I powered down for the night, the next time I opened up iphoto my entire library seemed to have disappeared(about 5000 images!) All that was left was the new import. It was as though the prog had reset itself there were no albums etc left at all. I understand that my photos live in the iphoto library folder in my pics but that about it! I have never understood the bizarre set up for these sub folders and how they work. Nor do I understand the other elements of the iphoto folder i.e. iphotodb etc. I noticed that I had two library folders as well and when I spotlighted jpg's that I have at least doubled up on images. Its a mess! Can anyone tell me exactly the way it should all be set up, in laymen's terms? Where the folders should live and in what order? And how to get rid of all the duplicate jpgs that have somehow been created? Without having to go through 5000 images by hand!!!

    Thanks for your response Terence.
That is what I've done already. iPhoto could not open. After the hard drive and logic board were replaced (for other issues) and OS X Leopard reinstalled, I rebuilt the library manually, and now the same thing has happened again, iPhoto crashes on start up. iPhoto Manager did not fix it, iPhoto cannot rebuild its own library for some reason, and I don't want to have to repeatedly rebuild the library by hand having already done it once. I've noted other posts about keeping constant library backups, which I can start doing, but I was wondering if perhaps going to a newer version of iPhoto would resolve this issue. There are so many similar posts on here perhaps iLife 5.0.4 is really not compatible with Leopard. I would prefer to get this version of iLife to work instead of trying to upgrade.

This is what the inside of an iPhoto 6 library looks like:
Where in there did you look for the image files?
Did you run any updaters pror to discovering the missing photos?  What fixes have you tried?  Do you have a backup of the library on another hard drive?

I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • I have a LaCie external hard disk. I do not know how to retrieve photos from iphoto that have disappeared. I do not know how to use Time Machine

I have a LaCie external hard drive. I also have Time Machine. I somehow have "lost" almost all my 5,000+ photos from iPhoto 8.1.2. I would appreciate someone giving me directions on how to retrieve the photos from the external hard drive or Time Machine.
The last thing that I did that is different from my normal routine was to trash duplicate music tunes from iTunes. I cannot figure out how that would have caused my photos to disappear.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I remember being cautioned to never do anything with the iPhoto Library. Should I have clicked on the iPhoto Library and then Restore?
I do not know "how" items are being placed in the LaCie external drive, just that it shows a backup running about every hour. I have taken a snapshot of the Time Machine Preferences I would you to see. Maybe that would answer this question.
In March 2011 I had to have hard drive on my iMac replaced. I had been using a Seagate external drive for backups. However I was not using Time Machine. When the Apple guru was helping me restore all my files etc on the new hard drive he was not familiar with Seagate and recommended I purchase this LaCie and use Time Machine. I never had any problem retrieving items from the Seagate backup. It was very straightforward. As I mentioned previously, I just don't have a clue with the LaCie and Time Machine.
I hope this is not TMI.
