Iphoto 09 fails to import from external hd
I am running iLife 09 on my Macbook, on a wireless network hosted by an airport extreme which is in turn connected to a WD My Book World edition (ethernet) which stores files from my iPhoto exported library.
My macbook refuses to import them into iPhoto 'Connection failed' reporting an error connecting to the bases station and asking that I check the IP address and try again. HOWEVER, all other applications work fine (web, email, etc) and I can copy the files across to the desktop successfully. I can also access the files using other applications (preview, word, etc)
What is even more confusing, is that when trying to import these files into iPhoto, with the network disconnected, the same message appears.
I can successfully import the same photos over the network into my wifes macbook running the same version of iphoto, but running system 10.5.8.
I am beginning to think this is a 'bug' in iphoto 09 running on system 10.6.5?
Has anyone any other suggestions??
(Happy to upgrade to iLife 11 if that will resolve the problem)
NO, this just tell us that your original Library is damaged.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

How do I stop iMovie 11 auto importing from external HD?
Okay, I'm going crazy. I, the intrepid Googler, have so far been unable to find the answer to this question. Please somebody help me!
I have hundreds of video clips stored on an external hard drive. However, when I crank it up, iMovie exceptionally irritatingly starts auto-importing every single clip back onto my MacBook's hard drive. No! No! NOOOO! That's NOT what I want! Stop it! Stop it! Stop it! I only want to import ONE video of MY choice at a time to edit and then save it back to the external drive, I don't have enough ROOM for ALL of them on the internal drive, you crazy machine!!!!
So. I go into iMovie preferences, where I'd expect to see an option for turning off auto import. Nope. I cannot see anything there. Do I have menu blindness? Am I losing my mind?
Then I Google 'how to stop iMovie 11 from auto-importing from external hard drive and find nothing. Am I alone in this? Surely not. Am I being a dunce? Possibly.
Advice, anyone?Okay. Please ignore the above. I was being a dunce. Today, it appears not to be doing it any more. Bizarre. LOL!

Best method of importing from external drive?
I have a 1T LaCie and want to know the best method to get those images into LR. The defaults are: "Add" and "NewPhotos" to "MyCatalog"
I think I may have more than one catalog and am not certain how to combine them. Is it best practice to have only one catalog?
Thanks in advance,

Iphoto 9.5.1 imports from nikon D7100 are flat
My iphoto 9.5.1 imports from nikon D7100 are flat, and the iPhoto controls do not seem to give as much control as earlier version i am upgrading from.
Export the photo out of iPhoto via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop and view them with Preview. Do they look flat there?
Are you shooting RAW or JPEGs? -

hi it's my first post,i'm from Italy and i've to ask if it's possible crete a new l iphoto library directly in external hd and if it's possible import the already existing picture in ext hd in that new library without
create a new copy of the files
many thanks
ciaoooooooooYes you can create a Library on an External HD:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and navigate to the External to put it there.
if it's possible import the already existing picture in ext hd in that new library without
create a new copy of the files
Yes but I strongly recommend that you do not do this.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

Failed AAF Import from PT: Error Code -39, bad references. Any clues?
I received an AAF file (and associated 96khz 24bit aif's) exported from ProTools. Several of the aifs are 28kb files that Finder's Get Info says have a duration of 0:00. Earlier on in the project I successfully imported an OMF export; this AAF was updating four tracks.
When I important the aaf into Logic—whether into a new or pre-existing project—regions appear at what look to be the right time indexes, and they appear to be the right length, but the waveform preview never fills in. All of the regions except one appear to be tied to a single audio file; the many of those very short files are apparently in a "Sample accurate edit.2" region that I can't find elsewhere in the project.
When I try to play the project, I quickly get a popup stating: "Error code -39 was returned by the Audio driver."
It looks like a similar issue was raised here: https://logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=88286
Any idea what's going on here? Is this a Logic importing AAF issue, a PT exporting AAF issue, or something else? One of the problems PT has.. is that it has issues exporting AAF files if the file name or path.. contains what Avid describes as "Foreign Characters" (Or to be more accurate... They spell it 'Foreing Characters'!!)
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Troubleshooting/en369691?retURL=%2Farti cles%2Fen_US%2Ffaq%2Fen414251&popup=true
This particular 'feature' has been one of many long standing bugs with PT and AAF exporting... Just do a quick google for "failed aaf export from Pro tools" without the quotes.. to see what I mean.... -
Movies re-imported from external drive after crash will not sync to iPod
A while back my hard drive crashed. I had backed up all my iTunes music and movies to an external drive, so I re-imported them to the repaired hard drive after it was installed. All of the music (purchased and ripped) transferred fine, but the movies I had purchased from iTunes will not sync back to my iPod. I've tried selecting them individually under the Movies tab in the "My iPod" screen within iTunes and then syncing, but nothing happens. I've tried re-importing from iTunes and doing the same thing, but to no avail. Help!
while the iPod is connected to itunes, control-click on its name in the source list on the left. click Reset Warnings. try another sync with the movies you want selected. you should get a warning that says either something like this: "There is not enough room on the iPod to sync all selected material. please remove some items." or something like this: "the format of the videos is not supported by the iPod" if it says the first one, do option 1. if it is the second one, do option 2. if it is neither of them, i don't have any ideas.
1.The iPod doesn't have enough space on it to fit all of the video. you have to take someting off the ipod to put anything more on.
2. you need to select the movies in iTunes, then go to the advanced menu and click Create iPod/iPhone Version, or Convert for iPod or iPhone, whichever appears. that will make a copy of the videos in a format that the ipod can read. you can remove the original copy from your library. you can keep the files if you want. now just select the new ones and sync them. everything should work. -
Aperture failed to import from Image Capture
Is there any way to rescue all the images (I deleted before finding out )that failed to import (for who knows what reason!) into Aperture from Image Capture (off my iPhone)?
I'd appreciate an answer to this also as I frequently receive an "Aperture failed to import" message unless I directly import images from my camera (i.e., I can't use a card reader or import images saved to an import folder).

iPhoto Library - events - pics imported to library from camera, scanner and internet. Some disappear--sometimes when scrolling and other times on their own. Some disappear when in general event and some when I try to expand the picture. If when expanding the small pic remains. It's really annoying.
Are you running a "referenced" or "managed" library?
Give this a try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

IPhoto crashes during photo import from iPhone
iPhoto consistently crashes during photo import.
I have already taken the following actions:
-Verify/Repair Disk Permissions
-Verify/Repair Disk
-Update software
I tried to rebuild the iPhoto library but was unable to.
I am running a MacBook Pro (OSX Lion 10.7.2, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM)
Does anyone have any input for how I can fix this problem?
The most recent problem report is below.
Thanks!

18 com.apple.CoreFoundationI have just had the same issue, and made an appointment with a representative, just in case they can be of any help. I will post here if they come up with any solution...
Using an imac with 10.7.2 and iphoto 9.2 and this is the first time since I tried to import pics from the iphone since I upgraded to 10.7.2 and iphoto 9.2.
Cannot import from HDD or camera SD card either. -
Iphoto faces gone after import from icloud
Hi I am using iphoto 9.6(910.29) in Yosemite and have around 8000 photos in the library and faces recognised for about 30 people so there are thousands of entries in the db.
After importing about 5 photos from icloud to prepare for a slide show at a funeral next week I went to id the faces on the imports and list of possible faces seemed to shift to my iphone contacts , not the list of people who's faces I already ID'd in iphoto
So the effect is I have lost the faces already identified and now only have three entries on my faces corkboard. I tried turing icloud shareing off and on to no effect.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to roll this back? When I click on Faces, it's empty, the import from iPhoto forget to import faces?
Hello Kris,
How did you imort from iPhoto? If you import using the Aperture Apllication menu
File -> Import -> iPh.oto Library
then all your Faces should be transferred from iPhoto.
Which of the two buttons in Aperture do you use to show your "Faces"? There is the "Faces" button in the Library panel and the "Faces" Button in the Toolbar. Both behave differently. The "Faces" button in the Library panel will reveal all faces, whereas the "Faces" Button in the Toolbar will only show the faces detected in the in the currently selected item (folder, project). So it may appear that faces are missing, even if they are included in the Aperture Library.

FCE4 Crashing when try to import from External
Hello -
I have a brand new MacBook Pro and a fresh installation of FCE4. Using OS X 10.6.4 and have an intel processor which is required for AVCHD video.
I've been importing AVCHD video (1080/60i) into FCE using the log and transfer without any problems. I had been importing it directly from the SDHC card.
I backed up the SDHC card to an external hard drive - a 1TB Seagate. I copied all the folders starting at the "Private" folder just as the instructions directed. Then within FCE and the Log and Transfer window, I created a custom path to the external hard drive.
Now all the clips loaded just fine in the window, but trying to add a clip to the queue or to play one in the window causes FCE to freeze and crash.
I thought I followed all the steps properly, and my FCE Easy Setup is as HD format and AIC 1080/60i so it matches the footage I am trying to import.
If anyone has a solution to why importing from the external is causing the crash, please let me know.
Before I added the external hard drive to the mix everything was working great. Yet the clips still load...so I'm not sure what's causing the crash!
Thanks for any help.
SarahHi -
It's a USB 3.0 but says it's still compatible with 2.0. Formatted in Mac OS Extended (journaled)
My settings in the Log and Transfer were off (thanks for telling me about it though - I didn't know about that part) but even after changing to Plain Stereo and putting it back to Apple Intermediate Codec, I had the same problem.
Also, moving folder to internal disk resulted in the same - the clips all load, but when trying to play or convert FCE quits.
Even more frustrating is that when I plug the SDHC card in and try to import directly off the card, it's doing the same thing. That was how I had been doing it before without any problems.
Any more advice? -
