IPhoto 8.1.2 Freezes on opening.

Hi - I have been using iPhoto 8.1.2 on OS X 10.5.8 and each time I open it up, I get the spinning multi-coloured ball after a few seconds. I have tried deleting the preferences file and reinstalling iPhoto but the problem persists. Would anyone have any further suggestions? Many thanks, John.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Why is iphoto 9.1.5 freezing on opening

Hi can anyone help me please? I cannot use iphoto 9.1.5  because as soon as it opens - before I can click on anything - it freezes with the spinning ball. My iphoto library is on an ext HD because of space issues but I have verified the disk and it is ok. I cannot understand it and don't know what to do. I desperately need to be able to use it. Panic panic!

Oh TD  thank you for replying!   It is a Western Digital Passport for Mac and it is formatted Mac OS Extended  Journaled. I have made a copy of it on another drive but that too freezes.

  • If iphoto 9.1.5 freezes on opening what do I do?

Hi can anyone help me please? As son as I launch iphoto 9.1.5 it freezes with beach ball and I have to force quit. Having had to do this too many times I tried rebuilding the libray from Iphoto using the alt/command menu and the options suggested by Old Toad in response to another query - and it just freezes.  I tried rebuilding in iphoto manager and it just freezes. I desperately need to access my photos and I cannot. My library is on an ext, HD because of space problems but I have verified the disk and it is ok. I am on Snow Leopard on a 1986 macbbokpro.  I posted this question in "using MacbookPro" which was the wrong place of course so I do hope someone can advise me please. Panic panic panic !

  • I updated to Mac OS 10.6.8 earlier today, and since then my iPhoto has not been functional. It freezes on opening and I have to force quit. Help!

I updated to Mac OS10.6.8 earlier today, and since then my iPhoto application has quit working. It freezes on opening. Any idea why or how I can fix it.

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • If your iCloud freezes when open system preferences, please do the following

If your iCloud freezes when open system preferences, please do the following.
(What i mean is the following, Settings>iCloud then it will freeze before you entering email, then follow the steps below)
    turn off your iPhone.
log out from iCloud, in any device (Mac Book, iPad, iPod, PC, what ever,  Remember any device that you may used the account there).
turn on your iPhone, and try now to log in to iCloud. ( you should be OK to log in, and you can type email now before it is hangs)
    * if you tried these steps and you can type the email and password and it is still hanging after you click "Sign in" then you need to do the following.
create a new iCloud account from iCloud website with domain iCloud (for example, [email protected] , YOU SHOULD NOT USE OTHER DOMAINS LIKE GMAIL, HOTMAIL OR WHAT EVER TO CREATE THE ACCOUNT).
then go back and use the new iCloud email to log in in your iPhone. ( I hope by that time you will be OK (^_^)).
    BEST WISHES

First follow the instructions in this support article.
If the iPhoto library is the source of your desktop pictures, it may need to be rebuilt, or you may need to update the iPhoto application to the latest version.
    Otherwise, continue as below.
    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

I have been working on a wedding slideshow for days and have over 3,000 pictures in albums on iPhoto.  It suddenly will not open without upgrading to Aperture and I can't find any of my photos!!!!  I need these photos, to complete the video, not to mention I don't want to lose them. I have had trouble ever since upgrading  to Maverick.

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

i just updated my mac and when i went to open iphoto it says it "can not open because of a problem" how do i fix this?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • I updated to Safari 6.1 and now it freezes when opened

Yesterday I updated to Safari 6.1 and now it freezes when opened, although the overall system stays up.  I updated to the latest Java and iTunes 11.1.2 at the same time. When I open Safari now, it pauses for a few seconds without going to the home page and then I get the spinning beach ball.  I get two messages:  One says that the plug-in for SplashID Safe has not been tested with this version of Safari (a message that I had been getting before the update and never caused a problem).  The other message says, "Crash Protection  It appears that Safari didn't quit properly.  Do you want Glims to re-open your tabs anyway?"  It gives me a choice to click "Cancel" or "OK".   I have tried clicking them (before the beach ball appears) and it makes no difference.  The version of Glims I am running is out-of-date.
The only available crash report is almost a month old and therefore is of no help.
I made a back-up with SuperDuper just before updating and can reverse the update if I do it soon, but I would like to get this working.
    I would appreciate any advice.
