IPhoto and Photos libraries

I have migrated from iPhoto to Photos in the last Os update on my MBP. Now I have 2 Libraries in my Pictures folder, iPhoto and Photos libraries. The libraries are huge and take a lot of SSD storage. Is it safe to delete the iPhoto library? Is it wise?
Thanks

Keep the iPhoto library around for a couple of weeks until you're entirely satisfied that Photos will do the job for you.  Photos is missing many of iPhotos features which might make it a no go for you.
If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 you'll be able to open your iPhoto library and use it with 10.10.3.You can get it from the App Store if necessary.

  • Iphoto and Photo libraries

After converting my Iphoto library to Photos, I found I had two identically named libraries. Both the same size. (~160GB)
    One would open Photos
and one would open Iphotos. However, when deleting some photos form "Photos", the library name and size has not changed.
(Nor has the Photos library size, now in a different folder)
My question is "Is it common for Photos to take the same name library"  and "When does
the library show a change for date/size via Finder?"
I am trying to ensure I am backing the new library up via DropBox.
ICloud will come later when i learn it better.
    thx.

There are two libraries: iPhoto Library and Photos Library. They don't have the same name. Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support.
Photos creates an iPhoto Library.migrated to identify the modified library. This library can be used in iPhoto or Photos.

  • What's the best way to merge, restore or reconstruct iPhoto and Aperture libraries to resolve images that are not found/offline?

    Hey there, Apple Support Communities.
To start, I'm working on a MBP Retina 15" with a 2.3GHz i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM.  10GB free on a 256GB SS HD.  Attached are two external HDs - one 1TB Western Digital portable drive from 2011, one 2TB Porsche LaCie non-portable drive from 2013; both connected via USB.  All photo libraries in question are on the external drives.
I have Aperture 3.5.1 and iPhoto 9.5.1.  I prefer to work in Aperture.
    The Issue(s)
Over the years, I have accumulated a number of iPhoto libraries and Aperture libraries.  At one point, I thought my WD drive was dying so I purchased the LaCie and copied all libraries over the the LaCie drive.  (Turns out, there's probably an issue with my USB port reading drives, because I can once again see the WD drive and occasionally I can't see the LaCie drive.)
So now I have old version of some libraries on the WD drive, and new versions on the LaCie drive.
When I was moving things, I ran the software Gemini to de-dupe my iPhoto libraries.  Not sure what effect that may have had on my issues.
In my main Aperture library and in some iPhoto libraries, I get the image-not-found badge or exclamation point.  I've dug through the hidden Masters folders in various libraries to find the original image.  In some cases, I have been able to find the original image, sometimes in a different version of the iPhoto library.
    My Question(s)
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
    2.  For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
    3.  Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
TL;DR: Too many iPhoto and Aperture libraries, and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
Thank you!  Let me know if you need add'l info to offer advice.
    With appreciation,
    Christie

That will not be an easy task, Christie.
I am afraid, your cleaning session with Gemini may have actually removed originals. I have never used this duplicate finder tool, but other posters here reported problems. Gemini seems to replace duplicate original files in photo libraries by links, and this way, deleting images can cause the references for other images to break. And Aperture does not follow symbolic links - at least, I could never get it to find original files this way, when I experimented with this.
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
You have to find the originals yourself. If you can find them or restore them from a backup, Aperture can reconnect them. The reconnect panel can show you, where the originals are supposed to be, so youcan see the filename and make a Spotlight search.
For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
Make a copy of the missing original you found in a folder outside the iPhoto library. You can either open the iPhoto library in Aperture and use "File > Locate Referenced file" to reconnect the originals, or simply reimport them. Then Lift&Stamp all adjustments and metadata to the reimported version.
See this manual page on how to reconnect originals:  Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images  (the paragraph:  Reconnecting Missing or Offline Referenced Images)
Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
References images will stay referenced, managed will remain managed. You need to unhide all hidden photos in iPhoto - this cannot be done in Aperture.
and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
That is probably due to Gemini's replacing duplicate originals by links, and your best cause of action is to fix this before merging the libraries. Reconnecting can be done for your iPhoto libraries in Aperture.

  • Entire music and photo libraries not showing up

I can't access my entire iPhoto and iTunes libraries on my Apple TV. I have both programs open, ATV sees the libraries, but picks a small, seemingly random, sample from each instead of allowing me to access all my photos and music. The separate "Screensaver" photo album I set up works fine.

Actually, it's just my photo library. My music seems to be there now.

  • Add both iPhoto and Aperture libraries

Can I upload both my iPhoto and Aperture libraries to Photos (after the initial install).  I found out after installation that I could have used the option key to import multiple libraries. But after initial install, I cannot seem to add a library, just individual photos.

Photos cannot merge libraries. It just can switch between libraries, when you hold down the options key while launching Photos.
You could use Aperture to merge your iPhoto Library into the Aperture Library (see Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries).
This would require compatible Aperture and iPhoto versions.
After merging both libraries with Aperture launch Photos with the alt/options key held down and select the merged library.  Photos will create an upgraded copy of the library.  Now you can delete the previous Photos library and enable the new library as Photos System Library in the Photos Preferences > General.
Are you using iCloud Photo Library with Photos? With enough storage you could try to merge the libraries in iCloud, but uploading from several libraries will not preserve the faces.

  • IPhoto and Aperture libraries coexisting?

    Hi,
with the latest versions of Aperture and iPhoto, it is my understanding, that only one database exists and will be uses by both applications. Now, I still do have iPhoto AND Aperture libraries in parallel on my HD, but only one is updated, the other one shows an old date. Can I delete the elder version (it's an iPhoto library), and stay with the actual version of the library (it's actually the Aperture library)?
    Thanks....

Can I delete the elder version (it's an iPhoto library), and stay with the actual version of the library (it's actually the Aperture library)?
Yes.  Verify that the library you want to keep has all of your photos, including the latest ones, before deleting the other library.

  • How do iPhoto and iTunes libraries connect to iMovie?

I'm still having trouble with iMovie '08 being unable to "see" or show still photos or sounds from the iPhoto and iTune libraries. It does not seem to even know those libraries exist.
Can someone at least tell me how iMovie normally connects to those libraries? What file tells it where to look?

In iMovie 11, there is a Preferences file called com.Apple.iApps.plist. If you move this preferences file to the trash, it will reset the links to iTunes and iPhoto. I haven't had iMovie 08 for several years, but I assume there is a similar preferences file for iMovie 08.
In general, the steps would be...
    Close iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes.
In the Finder, find this file and move it to the trash. Empty the Trash.
    Restart iTunes. Restart iPhoto.
    Restart iMovie.
It should be in the Home/Library/Preferences folder.  (Macintosh HD/<Your user name>/Library/Preferences/)

  • Iphot and Photos libraries taking all my disc space

I have installed Photos but now seem to have 2 photo libraries on my Laptop - iPhoto and photos. Seeing as I have a small SSD and a large collection of pictures can I safely delete one library to recover some disc space?

If you migrated the iPhoto Library to Photos, then it should not be using any more space than before, even though it may appear to be. Look at your disk space used and compare it to what you had before. As long as you don't do anything to break the links between the 2 libraries, then they shouldn't take up extra space.

  • I can't access my iPhoto or Photos libraries with Elements 11.  Elements say it can't open those files?

I am using Elements 11 on a Mac.  I cannot access any of the pictures in my iPhoto or Photo libraries.  Elements says it cannot open those files.  There must be a way, but I can't find it.  I'd appreciate a solution.  Thanks.

No, you should never poke around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto. That's the fast track to corrupting it and losing all your pics. If you want to use iphoto with PSE you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from iphoto or do it the way you have to do it with Photos (no choice with Photos):

  • I recently upgraded to Yosemite on MacBook Pro - unable to open iPhoto and Photo Booth

I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro (bought in 2011).  Since the Yosemite upgrade, I have been unable to open both iPhoto and Photo Booth at all.  I have lots of photos and need to access them. Both icons of iPhoto and Photo Booth have a circle with a bar across them, in my dock.
When I click on iPhoto I get the message " In order to open “iPhoto”, you need to update to the latest version. The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store".  I have tried upgrading iPhoto on the App store but get an error message "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store" .
Since I cannot even view my photos, I cannot store them elsewhere.  Please, can someone help me resolve this problem!!!
For Photo Booth, when I click on it, it says "You can’t use this version of the application “Photo Booth” with this version of OS X. You have Photo Booth 3.0.3" - gives me no option to upgrade at all.
Would appreciate help for both iPhoto and Photo Booth issues described above, with iPhoto being the most pressing concern. Thank You.

The new app is called Photos. It's icon was added to the Dock. Both, Photos and iPhoto, are located in your Applications folder.
If you need to upgrade iPhoto, follow these instructions prepared by Barney-15E: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8431

  • If I move my itunes and photo libraries to an external drive, will they still be backed up via time machine (on another external drive)?

I have 2 external drives, one of which I would like to use to store my iphoto and itunes libraries (to create space on my laptop hard drive).  Then I have a 1tb drive that I'm going to use for my time machine backup.  Will I be able to back up the itunes and iphoto libraries from the external drive onto the time machine drive with the rest of the files that are on my laptop hard drive?  Thanks.

Depends on the version of the OS that you are using I would post on the forum for the version of the OS that you are using.
Later version od Time machine will, definitely. If the version you have doesn't, then there are plenty of 3rd party back up utilities that wll do the job for you.
If you're moving the iPhoto Library then remember the disk needs to be formatted  Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

  • How to transfer iphoto and itunes libraries from NAS back to MacBook Pro

I recently upgraded my MBP hard drive, and decided I'd like to move my iphoto and itunes libraries back to my local drive from my Synology NAS. I thought this would be easily achieved by copying the libraries from the NAS and pasting them in the desired locations in the MBP, as I did to get them to the NAS in the first place. This will not work.
First off, when I try a simple copy and paste through finder, the transfer gets about half way through and suddenly stops with  "You can't copy "iPhoto Library" because it has the same name as another item in the destination volume, and that volume doesn't distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames".
This occurs even if there is no Iphoto directory currently on the MBP.
I contacted Synology, and they attempted to have me use a windows transfer protocol to transfer the libraries, but when transferring this way I am stopped half way through with an "Error -8084" code.
I am aware that the MBP is formatted with MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and that the NAS is formatted differently, but there must be some way to get this back.
My itunes library contains all my family's ipad, and iphone back ups, in addition to around 35 gb of music. Additionally, I don't want to lose Event info in Iphoto.
    Please help!
    Thank you

  • HELP! Deleted iPhoto and iTunes Libraries by changing name?!?!?

    Hey guys,
My friend had two user accounts on his Mac. One was "Chris" and one was "Katie". The only one that was ever used was "Chris". Since his wife used the Mac a lot more than he did he thought it would be funny to change the user name from "Chris" to "Katie's Big Mac". The short name was not changed at all. He then deleted "Katie". I guess that deleted all the iPhoto and iTunes Libraries. But that was it.
Does any one know why it did this? I told her to look under Users: Chris: Music: iTunes: iTunes Music: and all of the old files were there. She dragged one of the files over and dropped it in iTunes to copy it over and then she went back to get more and they all disappeared from the folder iTunes Music. I didn't tell her to do this she did it on her own.
The iPhoto Library is totally empty though. Does anyone know why this happened and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

    PM G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Okay it's fixed now. All he did was change the old names back to the way they were, recreate "Katie", and it all came back. He had to reload the libraries for iPhoto and iTunes but that was it. All other prefs are fine. But the weird part is that now the files that were in Chris are now in Katie. Thanks for your help.

  • Moving iphoto and imovie libraries to free up space

    Hi All,
I'm trying to free up hard drive space on my '09 MacBook Pro by moving my iphoto and imovie libraries - approx 110GB - to an external hard drive. I've done this successfully and emptied the trash but this has only freed up approx 25GB of space.
Is there something else I should be doing to free up the the whole 110GB? Any help is appreciated!
    PS. Using version 10.9.3

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
