IPhoto froze for the first time today.

Trying to download pictures from a cf card via a card reader on my mbp i7.  Never had a problem before but today, it just stopped downloading and everything froze.  The only way to get out of iPhoto was to shut the computer down, and I had to force that.  Any ideas why?

Dio you have any video files on the card?

  • HT1551 Content now plays half way after device froze for the first time

After my device froze for the first time (just a few weeks after I purchased it), it seems
that the device is now malfunctioning. Content from Netflix or purchased from iTunes
only play half way. Sometimes it stops after 30 mins or 1hr, depending on the length,
and most of the time it does not resume, it takes me back to the beginning of the feature.
At first I thought it was a network issue with Netflix, but it happens with iTunes purchases too.
I have my PC and phone connected to the same wifi connection and the signal has never dropped while the
issue occurred with the Apple TV. I have reset the settings on the device and also reentered the wifi info but problem persists.
Any suggestions to fix this issue?

  • Back up iPhoto 08' for the first time (different than last time I did it)

The last time I backed up my photo library was before I got iPhoto 08'. I know I should have done it a long time ago and backed things up at least once a week but I kinda got busy. Since my last backup I have also upgraded to Leopard, which yes I did back up my hard drive when I did that, but I also had the advantage of having an IT person personally helping me.
Today when I went to back up my library things were different. Rather than the old "iPhoto Library" folder that use to be in the pictures section, I just see a single file named "iPhoto Library" and when I click it, it launches iPhoto.
So my question is how do I back up my library now, and what ever happened to the "Original" and "Modified" folders? What I would really like to do is save my current library on an external with everything intact. Events, Albums, the order I added them in, etc. I want to clear iPhoto out completely and then re-import my current library.
I should probably mention that on the external hard drive right now is a back up of my old library from before my upgrade to Leopard and it still has the old setup of the iphoto folder and then inside that is the "Original" and "Modified" folders. How should I handle this, just delete it?

With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to see inside? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look familiar? Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
What I would really like to do is save my current library on an external with everything intact. Events, Albums, the order I added them in
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the External. That's it.
I want to clear iPhoto out completely and then re-import my current library.
I'm afraid that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If you back up a library then trash it, then restore the selfsame library, how does that constitute a “clear out”?
I would delete nothing until I had the Maintenance project finished.

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Importing large iPhoto library for the first time

My wife and I have a devently large photo library (10,000+ files) on an external hard drive. We use iView Media Pro to catalog the photos and the files are organized meticulously. I am considering switching to iPhoto or using both programs concurrently because I like iPhoto's integration with other Apple programs like iWeb. Does anyone have any recommendations with how to make these programs work together? I like the batch renaming function in iView but I like the smart folders in iPhoto. Any advice is appreciated. Plus, I am worried about losing my keywords when I import to iPhoto. How do I keep my keywords?

    Chet:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I use iView and iPhoto concurrently with iPhoto in the alias mode. iView is my primary management tool and iPhoto is used mainly for creating books, calendars and cards. I've created some Tutorials to assist users in transitioning to an all iView system, an iPhoto alias system with iView syncing the keywords, etc.
I always add my photos to iView first, batch renaming and adding keywords. Then I import that folder into iPhoto so as to get the new names and have the keywords available to iPhoto. NOTE: You must sync the keywords back to the files with iView before importing.
I feel it works very well, giving me the best of both worlds. There is one caveat to all of this: edits done by iPhoto are recognizable in iPhoto only as the edited version is saved in the Modified folder of the library. Also, any edits done by iView will only be seen by iPhoto when iPhoto uses the full sized image in a slideshow, book, etc. The thumbnail is not updated that way.

  • My iPad Mini was locked up today (for the first time) on a boot screen, with a Debugger Message: Panic. Should I bother trying to fix, or return to store?

My iPad Mini locked up for the first time today. A boot screen, with among many other things, a Debugger Message: Panic. Is there a fix for this even though I can't seem to even get it to reboot past this error, or am I wasting my time and need to return it?

if it is still within the return period, return it.  Why try and fix a new iPad.

  • IPhoto nightmare. Tried to import photos using Nikon software for the first time and all my photos disappeared from iPhoto 8.1.2 (and everything from itunes too). Newly reinstalled iPhoto crashes as soon as I import anything now.

Macbook OSX 10.5.8, iPhoto 8.1.2. I just tried to import some photos using Nikon software (View NX2) for the first time. When I next looked into iPhoto it was empty (so was iTunes but that's another story). I had backed up photos fairly recently but don't use time machine. Searched in vain everywhere and must have done something wrong because iPhoto wouldn't then open at all, saying it was unreadable. After a lot more attempts to recover I uninstalled iPhoto and the receipts and reinstalled from my original disc. It seemed to be ok and imported some photos from my iphone but as soon as the import is complete iPhoto crashes and when opened again it is empty. Have tried this several times and have shut down and have tried rebuilding with the alt and cmd buttons but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?

not a reply but not sure how to add something to my own thread! It seems that Desktop was damaged too as when I try to open it a screen says there is no application selected to open Desktop with. No idea what I should choose! Any help appreciated, have really made a mess of my MacBook this time.

My Iphone 4 just updated to the iOS6.  I've connected it to my computer for the first time since then, and wanted to back up my photos in iPhoto.  However, although Iphoto recognized my phone, it shows no photos to upload or backup.  It lists my phone in the "devices" category on the left bar, but no longer shows any of my photos.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've reread your question several times and am not sure I understand it.
Are you trying to basically start over, as if you just took your iPhone out of the box?  If so, do:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings

  • I downloded iphoto 11 9.2 and when opened it for the first time and the program started to update my iPhoto library the file got corrupted. That has happened in the two macs I have (both of them rather new and updated to last Lion version 10.7.2).

I downloaded Iphoto 11 9.2 from the apps store (was on iphoto '09 before version 8.x) and when opened it for the first time it tried to update my photo librery and ended up corupting it to the extreme that I had to get a backup from time capsule and downgrade my iphoto version. I spent yesterday 6 hours at the genius bar in an apple store and they were not able to provide me with any other solution. In the emantime, I have to forget about about photo streaming... Any idea, is this a bug that somebody knows how tp fix?

In fairness, this isn't an issue in iPhoto 11 but one in your Library. Some file or other in there is damaged and that's what causes the crash during the upgrade.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I clicked on iMessage on my Macbook Pro today for the first time, and now NOTES keeps opening up every 5 seconds, with a new note.  I cannot stop it from opening. If I close it or force close, it opens again in 5 seconds.  I can't get rid of it.  I have tried to clear out the iMessage settings I had put in, and I've tried to adjust the Accounts to not include notes to synch.  But, Notes will not stop.  It opens a new note, and even if you ignore it, it assumes preference every 5 seconds, and the Mac is impossible to use.

Do you have any Boot Camp or other secondary partitions set up on your system? If so then try running a disk verification routine (chkdsk, etc.) in Windows to repair the disk. While I've not heard of it happening recently, in the past errors in these partitions have resulted in stubborn ghost files appearing in OS X.

  • I want to create for the first time ever an iPhoto library on my Mac Mini from all of my seperate external hard drives over the years. Instead of filling my Mac Mini hard drive space with all of the pics can I import it to a seperate Apple hard drive.

I want to creat for the first time on my Mac Mini an iPhoto library. I have many seperate hard drives with pics I want to import but are concerned I will fill the hard drive with pics alone. Can I install the pics on one larg (1TB) external apple hard drive and use iPhoto functions still with the pics being installed on a seperate drive from the iPhoto OS?

This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Once that is done you can import directly into the iPhoto library on the external HD.

  • IPhoto 6.0.6 throws up Error Message when used for the first time

After 7 months since having purchased my iMac I am using iPhoto for the first time. However, as soon as the iPhoto Library is created in the Pictures folder, about 30 seconds later, I get an Error Message stating "An error occurred while trying to save your photo library. Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure your hard disk has enough space and that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library folder."
I have over 165GB on my hard disk. I have tried re-installing iLife 06 from the system disks that came in the box with my iMac. I have tried re-building the library by holding down the Option and Command keys when launching iPhoto. Nothing has helped so far.
I have tried calling the Apple support line, but after over an hour on the phone even he didnt know what the problem was.
    Someone please help!
    Gratefully yours,

The plist files simply record your user preferences for an application - your choice of default font, say, or the colour of the background, that sort of stuff. If this files is damaged or corrupted it can affect the app in all sorts of ways. When you trash it the app will create a new one when you next start it, and that will be the "factory defaults", but at least it will work.
    To trash the fie:
Go to HD / Users / Your Name / Library / Preferences and find the com.apple.iphoto.plist fie, and put it in the trash.
    Then start iPhoto.
