Iphoto is jammed

Hi, I'm a newbie to Mac but was slowly learning.  However, after showing photos and video clips to the family from Mac to TV, I find Iphoto has jammed on a video (think it is a video and not photo) and the coloured thingy is just going round and round.  I forced quit by holding on the dock icon but each time I open Iphoto it is still the same and won't move on.  Please help!

what version of iPhtoo and of the OS?
try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • After quitting iphoto computer jams

    Hi there,
After quitting iphoto, my computer jams and a blank blue screen appears. I have to hold down the power button to shut it down and then start up again.
Everything appears normal after that. Any ideas?
    Thanks Sally

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Mac running slow, worse since installing Yosemite from Lion

Mac started to run slow every now and then, updated to yosemite and now getting worse, slow to open programmes like iPhoto (getting jammed when using), websites and switching between the two.  Get a coloured wheel often.  More worryingly recently when waking from sleep, the left half of my screen is distorted like an old unturned TV!!  I am a typical user with little knowledge on how macs work, so am nervous to do much.  Have included the etracheck report for info.  Can somebody tell me if i should take it to a mac "shop" or have any advice on fixing myself.  many thanks

Based on the information you need more RAM for what you are running concurrently.
You OS X installation is defective and needs to be reinstalled.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Download and reinstall 10.10.1

  • Sharing iTunes/iPhoto with multiple users on same iMac

Sorry if this has been asked and answered (if so, could you refer me to the post).
I am trying to set my machine up so that my wife and I have different user accounts but shared access to the same iTunes and iPhoto content. I managed to do this by placing the iPhoto library and the iTunes library in the shared folder and by applying admin read and write permissions to both folders.
The problem is that when I add new photos or music to iTunes or iPhoto whilst logged into my account, when my wife (also an admin on the mac) logs in she doesn't have automatic access to the new content unless I (or she) tediously go through each individual file giving her read and write access so that she can access them in her own account. The converse is also true for her adding new media and me not having access to it.
Is there a way this can be overcome?
Hopefully this makes sense to someone.
    Thanks
    James Munro

  • IPhoto slowed to a crawl - unusable - help!

    hi
I returned to use iPhoto for the first time in a couple of months - during which I've updated to 10.5.2 and the latest iPhoto updates - now it's slowed to a crawl to a point where it's unusable - simply scrolling brings up the beachball - nothing's changed besides these updates - last photos added were at christmas - used to work smoothly and slickly
the library holds 7200 images - there's 30GB free on my 120GB hard drive
what I did so far was trash the prefs - empty caches - then rebuild the library checking all the option boxes
trashing the prefs and caches seems to help for a moment - on restarting iPhoto is more responsive for a minute or two but then soon gets jammed up again
I'm on the road and can't reinstall until getting home in a couple of weeks - next step I guess
been using macs since 1994, iPhoto since it's release - this has me stumped - anyone got any ideas?

Are you sharing between two or more Macs? If so try turning sharing off - some folks have found that helps a lot
Do you have Web Galleries that allow photos to be uploaded? It appears to me that that can slow things down while iPhoto syncs with the web galleries
You do not have a large library (I have about 22,000 photos and Old Toad has even more) and you have adequate free disk space
check turning sharing off if it is on and galleries syncing (you can see the little wheels spinning to the right of the web gallery name in the source pane) and see if there is anything else you think might contribute to the issue

  • Migration to iPhoto 6 AND Intel Mac Pro at the same time

I am about to move my life to a new Mac Pro. Included in the move is an iPhoto 5 Library with 19 000 images.
The iPhoto Library is backed up, of course, and there are multiple redundant copies of all the images on remote hard drives.
The question is, should I upgrade iPhoto 5 to iPhoto 6 PPC version (and let iPhoto 6 PPC reorganize the Library) on the old Mac FIRST, and then move the iPhoto 6 Library over, or is it OK to move the iPhoto 5 Library to the new Mac intact and let iPhoto 6 (Intel version) do the reorganizing?
Also, are there preference files from iPhoto 5 that have to go over to preserve the Library structure (rolls, comments, etc)?
    Thanks.

    James
Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from your Pictures folder to the same location on the new machine. Then, to deal with any file permission issues: Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png
(Credit to Old Toad for this one).
Then launch iPhoto on the new machine and it will do the rest.

  • My Macbook Pro 2014 ran out of battery while mid-slideshow. Now the slideshow won't skip through photos and I can't figure out why? Macbook Pro 2014 13-inch Intel i5 8GB RAM 128GB flash, iPhoto library is on external HDD

    Macbook Pro 2014
    13-inch
    Intel i5
    8GB RAM
    128GB flash SSD,
    Integrated Graphics
iPhoto library is on external HDD
I was in a slideshow, with around 1,911 photos in it. About halfway through, my Macbook ran out of battery. Now when I restarted and charged the Macbook and reopened iPhoto, the slideshow won't advance through photos, and I can't figure out any reason why it would do this.
I thought it may be corrupted, so I deleted and reinstalled iPhoto library, iPhoto itself, and disconnected and reconnected my external HDD.
This didn't work, the photos still won't advance.
I don't know any reason why this would be happening, and there is ample space on my internal drive.
I'm happy to provide more information if needed!
    Many Thanks,
    James

Make a few tests, James, to narrow down the problem and find out, if the slideshow is corrupted, your iPhoto Library, or settings in your account.
To test, if only your slideshow has a problem, create a new slideshow, just for testing. Just use "File > New Slideshow" and add a few photos. Does this slideshow play correctly?
If the test slideshow does not play either, create a new iPhoto Library. Use the File menu in iPhoto: File > Switch to library > Create New. Import a few photos and create a slideshow.  Does it play?
If even a new library does not solve the problem, test in a different user account (see this document:  Isolating an issue by using another user account - Apple Support):
This process involves creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.
Create a new standard or admin user account in Users & Groups preferences.
Use these instructions for OS X Mavericks.
See these instructions for OS X Mountain Lion.
See this video, or these instructions for OS X Lion.
Optional: If you have any specific files you wish to test with, copy (don't move) those items to the /Users/Shared folder in the Finder.
Log out of your current user account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
Log in with the new account you created.
Attempt to reproduce the issue you were seeing in your regular user account.
After you have completed testing, log out of the test account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
Log in as your regular account.
After you have completed all testing with the test user account, you may want to delete it. You can delete an account in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.
Note: Prior to deleting a test account, make sure you are completely done with it. If you have files in the Guest User you wish to keep, you should copy them to the /Users/Shared folder .
If you should find, that slideshows only play in a new user account, post back.

Told me to try unchecking the box to sync Photos.
    Do a sync.

Going to try that now. Let me know if it works for you James

  • PLEASE HELP - My iPhoto is very SLOW.

OK so I installed my iPhoto tonight. I have already been frustrated for the past 8 hours, it's not 5 in the morning still trying to figure out what is happening to it.
First of all, my Powerbook wouldnt recognise my iLife 06 DVD. I had to install it with my iMac G5. That is ridiculous in itself. The DVD was brand new with no straches whatsoever, not only this one DVD. It just would not recognise any iLife 06 DVDs. I know this since I thought the first one was strached and my friend from the store exchanged another one for me. Any other DVDs work fine on my computer. Fine, so I used Target Disk Mode.
What happened next was, I installed it in both my iMac G4 and Powerbook. (I bought the family license if u had to know) Both are running ridiculously slow. Scrolling up and down is like being stuck in traffic jam in Manhattan. Zooming in and out is almost impossible. The loading icon pops up every 2 secs straight after it has just disappeared. Sharing photos is like asking my grandma to run. Never happened with iPhoto 05. My settings are as follows:
    PB: 1.33GHz, 1GB Ram 60GB HD
    iMac G4: 1GHz, 512 Ram, 80Gb HD
There is hardly any support from my local Apple (Hong Kong), is there any suggestions to how I can solve the problem? The same applies to iMovie and iDVD. SEEMS LIKE THE ONLY THING THAT IS WORKING IS THE iTunes 6 WHICH WAS FREE.i have reinstalled it twice. took everything iPhoto off, and reinstalled it. Did this twice. No difference whatsoever.
    any suggestions guys?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You do have a Superdrive in the PB don't you? Also how much free space do you have on your two Macs? What size are your libraries?

  • IPhoto wont open library after upgrade

I just updated to iLife 11 and iPhoto will not open. I get the following message:
You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
This library must be upgraded by the iPhoto Library Upgrader application before you can use it with iPhoto. Please reinstall iPhoto from your iLife disc.
Where do I get the iPhoto Library Upgrader application from?

    James:
Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
Hopefully one of these will work and you won't have to resort to Fix #4, starting over with a new library and importing the original files from the current library.

  • Adding Image from web or downloading linked images to iphoto

Has never worked for me and am wondering if anyone else having same problem. Have looked for any instance of this topic and not having much success here either.
All I've wanted to do is this:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/automator/example2.html
I've posted similar topic in automator but realize this is more likely an issue with iPhoto and not automator but who knows.
I follow the directions of Apples own design to download photos to a folder and then transfer them into an album in iPhoto. Each time I do so, I get the follow error message:
__Can't make «class impo» of application "iPhoto" into type boolean. (-1700)__
The script downloads to the folder.. it was the "pictures" folder at first but read somewhere that may not be a good idea to download into same folder as the library. Either way, still doesn't work.
I'm running iPhoto 7.0.2 now but this has happened on past versions as well.
    Things I've tried:
    1. Moved the current library to a new drive and deleted the original.
    2. Created a new library in system drive.
    3. Delete plist of iphoto
    4. Delete plist of automator
    5. Redid the automator script
    6. Tried downloading pics into different folder.. one other than the user's Picture folder.
    7. The script will write the new "album" in to iphoto but doesn't go any further...refer to above error message.
    8. Just to see if it will import.. I run the import function from iphot itself and it works.. I now have the pics.
Not the way the web page says this should work.

    James
Not sure I can help you with Automator but here's two options:
Hazel (http://www.noodlesoft.com/hazel.php) will watch a folder for you and import the pics to a specified album
    Or
Right click on the iPhoto Package File in Pictures and go 'Show Package Contents' In the resulting window you'll see a folder called 'Auto Import'. Make an alias to the folder and drag it to the desktop. Pics dropped onto that folder will be imported the next time iPhoto launches.

  • The Photo Stream option dissapeared from the left side-bar in iPhoto.

Hello everyone, just to let you all know, I'm new to the world of Mac. As I was setting up Photo Stream in iPhoto, I accidently clicked on the "No Thanks" option instead of clicking on the "Turn on Photo Stream" option. Now the link has disappeared from the side-bar in iPhoto, I am affraid I might have ruined my ability to 'photostream'. Is there anyway I can redo the entire process? Any input will be greatly appreciated. By the way, I enabled photostream in iCloud from system prefences. Will enabaling it in iCloud make Photo Stream work even though it does not appeare in the iphoto side-bar?

  • Books are not saved when created with iPhoto 09

When creating a book, everything is normal but the book is not saved in the computer. So I have to finish the project and order It. The name of the book is still listed on the left but there's no photos or text. I also have a book that seems corrupted because when i try to open the file iphoto jams and i'm not able to remove the corrupted book because the file can't be opened.
    Please help me

Also what system and iPhoto versions are you running?
