Iphoto library jailbreak crew needed

Help you mac wizards....Iphoto dilema has caused me to post my first question.
I was so excited to find this old post (shown below) that explains my exact dilema. The answers did not answer my question however. Thank you to Nayeli for posting, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1898201
I thought I was going to lose my mind trying to explain what my situation was. Hopefully you don't lose yours reading all of this. Please scroll down to read the post from Nayeli so you have a better idea what's going on, then come back to where I join the discussion describing my problem.
(A side note, why does apple not give an option to edit the post, i only see "post message" or "discard and cancel." What about EDIT? I had to copy paste it into another program just to revise. When I click discard, it asks "are you sure you want to discard." No I don't but where is the EDIT option? Am I missing an obvious needed feature?)
My photo management is in the same mess as below. Pictures held hostage by iphoto and years of backups that I'm now trying to get out of iphoto and consolidated into a nice, beautiful, joyful, streamlined system that makes taking pictures fun again. Recently I got a new mpb and had been using a powerbook since 04 with 04 photo backups scattered about due to storage limitations here and there.
Over the last weeks, I've committed to cleaning up my mess and have slowly been getting a handle on things. Forums like these are invaluable. I've sorted it out as best I could with 5 different iphoto libraries. (They were originally 5 different i photo libraries, backups of hard drive and external hard drive, poor management and some of which pictures could be overlapping duplicates) All of which I can access in old iphoto format (from old old backups) instead of new 8 that iphoto converted them to that doesn't let you look thru folders without clicking find photo. I want to stop using iphoto and get into something like picassa where you have the benefit of file management but not the nightmare of having your images locked into a third party software program that takes mountains of work to free.
At this stage....i'm trying to do this in gradual steps.
As mentioned, I have 5 libraries, and all five folders in their original old iphoto 4 format so you can see piles of subfolders. I do not want to sift manually through folders to select which ones i want to export as there are 30,000 images or more. When Iphoto launches the libraries, it shows rolls, thumbs, etc.. there are 3 versions of the same photo. If I export, I have to pick, whereas I want to export the entire library and then enjoy the process of sorting photos when I can access them easily outside of iphoto, where I can have just ONE image not three. If I do a sort in finder for jpgs, it also gives me duplicates. What is the best way out of this iphoto octopus?
Apple Care told me to drag and drop the old library into new computer and that was WRONG. Creating the pile of excess files. I deleted them all and started over. Another mac friend said use extractor. That didn't work either. Another friend said use migration manager. Yet apple care said that won't work because old photos are iphoto 4 and new computer is iphoto 8. However due to the fact it "updated" the old library when I brought it into new computer, is it now ready for migration manager and will this program only bring one not three files of each image? If I had known how iphoto program really works years ago, I would have never entered into using it. Another friend only uses finder on her mac to organize and find photos, but I like to have more creative options than that, like what I see in Picasa.
Aperture came preinstalled on my new mpb but I've never used it and I don't know if it traps photos into a similar iphoto program or not. It gives me an option to import iphoto library. Will it import only 1 image, not thumbs, etc.. of each picture and how will it handle duplicates. I tried it just to see what would happen and an hour later, its still stuck on one image saying its importing thumbs. So this is not playing nicely with iphoto either and does import ALL images. So I'd still be stuck sifting out the original photos I want to start fresh from.
Should I first run a photo duplicator program to try and eliminate the excess thumbs and low res files, leaving me the original single image file?
Then I can export the entire library? As I said, I can't select the photos I want as solution was given below to someone in my boat, due to the fact I'm not sure where or what to select. And a manual select of individual photos would take me 20 years. I just want to extract my original photos and get them out of iphoto, where the date taken is intact. Right now, many of the photos in iphoto libraries are totally wrong, going back to 1970. I have spanked myself for waiting so long to tackle this disorderly photo management issue, but seeing now how much work is involved creating a solution, I am greatly anticipating liberation of iphoto and the development and use of a great new photo management system. WHich i haven't figured out. Step 1 is just to free my photos! Freeyourphotos.com would be a great website for someone who wants to develop a site just for great photo management steps, options, resources and posts for people looking for some education on this iphoto issue. Maybe next version will be like Picasa and let you manage photos better.
What exactly is batch change command and how does it work?
I want to start over, with all of my photos in one big photo folder that i can work with independent of anything else. Any tips for photo management comparisons from other high volume photo takers out there?
Sorry for the long post. I will be super grateful for help.
Thanks so much.

Getting photos OUT of iPhoto
Posted: Feb 7, 2009 4:46 PM
Hi all,
I used to use iPhoto 4 a long time ago, and then stopped using it as my photos took up so much more space in iPhoto than kept outside of the software library in folders. I had a really small hard drive and no external drive at the time. Then at some point I tried using iPhoto 6... and to make a long story short I now have an incredible mess of photos, some of which exist both in an iPhoto library (either 4 or 6 or both) and in folders elsewhere, some of which are only in folders outside of iPhoto, and some of which are only in an iPhoto library. I now have a much larger hard drive and external drives, and am trying to set order to the mess (it will probably take me the rest of the year!)
To complicate matters even more, I just now accidentally updated one of my myriad versions of iPhoto Library to iPhoto 7.1.4 (the version I have currently installed), and have noticed that you can no longer see the originals folder inside the iPhoto library in the Finder, UNLESS you right-click on a photo in iPhoto and select "Show File", and then you can browse through the folders of the iPhoto Library. I suppose they made this change so you wouldn't mess with those folders and files.
Looking at the folders inside the iPhoto library that I accessed in that way for the library I accidentally upgraded, I see they are a mess...some dates have two folders, other folders say "Roll X" instead of being separated by date, etc.
*I want to extract all the photos that are in the iPhoto Library to folders outside of the program*--just the original photos--so I can
A. Have a backup of the pictures outside of any iPhoto Library, and
B. Reimport all my pictures once I make heads and tails of what is where (or perhaps just have iPhoto reference the originals in folders outside of the iPhoto Library, since I read that is now possible).
My question is this:
What is the best way of getting the pictures out of the iPhoto Library? If I get access to the original folders within the library by right-clicking any photo and then being able to browse inside the library, am I going to have any problems if I copy or move those original pictures directly to a folder outside of the iPhoto Library? Would it be better to export the pictures? Does exporting using "current" under "Kind" give you the original more safely?
Also, any suggestions on how to best have photos OUTSIDE of an iPhoto library organized so that iPhoto can reference them, but your backup is also organized? I'd like to have my photos organized by date in the backup as well, so that I don't have to backup all my pictures every time I add new ones, just add the latest to the backup drive.

Solved
My question is this:
What is the best way of getting the pictures out of the iPhoto Library? I
Select the photos you want out and export them as JPGEs - kind = current for the current edited version - kind = original for the original
f I get access to the original folders within the library by right-clicking any photo and then being able to browse inside the library, am I going to have any problems if I copy or move those original pictures directly to a folder outside of the iPhoto Library?
Copying photos out will not be a problem if you make no errors - for me that is not a good bet - it is best to stay out of yoru iPhoto library
Would it be better to export the pictures?
Yes
Does exporting using "current" under "Kind" give you the original more safely?
No - it gives you the current version which may be the original if no changes have been made or will be the current edited version if edits ahve been made
Also, any suggestions on how to best have photos OUTSIDE of an iPhoto library organized so that iPhoto can reference them, but your backup is also organized?
In the iPhoto preferences un check the advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library"
HOWEVER - this is not recommended - it makes importing more complicated, deleting more complicated and makes replacing a hard drive or going to a new computer much more difficult - and it puts you totally in charge of your original photos - being sure that they are there and do not get moved
I'd like to have my photos organized by date in the backup as well, so that I don't have to backup all my pictures every time I add new ones, just add the latest to the backup drive.
Finally, any suggestions on what to do with pictures that you scan so that they appear by the date they were taken as opposed to the date they were scanned? Is there a way to modify the date of the photo info?
Select the photos in iPhoto and use the batch change command under the photos menu - the tiem and date option

Given your post I have to say that your chosen nickname is amusing.
All the folks here who post in response to your issue are other users giving their time for free. Do we really have to wade through 1900+ words just to find out what the issue is? Frankly, after the first digression (and by the way, it is possible to edit posts for up to 15 minutes after you post) I nearly lost the will to live.
It is really better to
1. State as simply as you can the problem.
2. Mention any efforts you have made to solve it
3. Don't editorialise. Don't drift off into side issues.
(See how annoying it is when you've read this far and haven't even got to the answer yet?)
To leave iPhoto is really simple: Select the pics in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. Set the Kind: to Original. Export to a folder on the desktop and off you go. Exporting will not export "the whole Library". It will export the Original or the Current versions of your pics, depending on what you set in the Export dialogue. There is no need in the world to use a duplicate finding application.
If the Exif on the camera was set to the right date then your Photos will still have that date.
If you don't want to export (why? because that's too simple?) but prefer to root around inside the Library:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Ignore the contents of the Data folder, they are just thumbnails. Your Edited pics are in the 'Modified' Folder, the Originals are in the 'Originals' folder.
Exporting the Current version will do the same job.
If you find iPhoto frustrating and difficult to understand then I strongly advise you to avoid Aperture. It's not unusual for an Aperture library to have Originals, multiple virtual versions, Previews and thumbnails.
iPhoto, Aperture (and, I think) Picasa are Digital Asset Managers. They are databases. They treat your original file like a film photographer treats the negative and always protect it. Though they work in different ways, they all will have multiple versions of your photo. If you don't want this use a Photo Editor and the Finder to manage your pics.
For the record:
Your Photos are not "trapped" inside iPhoto;
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Batch Change allows you to change some of the metadata on a photo in batches.

  • Need to reinstall my system, how do I backup iPhoto library?

I have a very large iPhoto library and now need to reinstall my system. I dodn't want to loose the library but how can I make a save backup that I can import later again?

Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. The disk should be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) This will make a copy on that disk.
Test this to make sure it works. Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and open the copied Library.
Really, the amazing thing is that you say you have a "very large library" and claim you don't want to lose it but you don't already have a back up?

  • Trying to open IPhoto, get message about needing photo library to open. Never had this issue before. Any advise?

I have a MacBook Pro OS X 10.9.3. My IPhoto is version 9.5.1 (902.17). I just updated all available software on the computer and still could not open IPhoto.
Message states " IPhoto needs a photo library to open. Select from list, find another library or create new library you can import photos to later. Same photo library will be used next time you open IPhoto." I don't really want to do any of this. I just want to be able to open IPhoto as I always have and just did a couple days ago. Don't know why this is happening all of a sudden. Please advice. Thank you.

" IPhoto needs a photo library to open. Select from list, find another library or create new library you can import photos to later. Same photo library will be used next time you open IPhoto."
This means, that iPhoto cannot find your iPhoto library. You need to point iPhoto to the location of the library. Have you checked in the fInder, if your iPhoto library is still where it is supposed to be by default, in the Pictures folder, and called iPhoto Library.photolibrary? Or have you moved your library somewhere else and renamed it?
I just updated all available software on the computer and still could not open IPhoto.
Did you just update iPhoto to a newer version?  What was the previous version?

  • How do I transfer an iphoto library to a USB HD?

My Macbook Pro is being fixed at the Apple Store about an hour away from where I live. I need to erase, reinstall, and ship the machine while I am in Des Moines. I have my essential documents backed up already but didn't get a chance to back up the iphoto library before it needed to be fixed. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can save my library? I am hesitant to use a HD I have because it has been used on a windows machine and has files on it currently from a windows machine. I don't want the data to be lost because of formatting. Is it possible to buy a 13+GB HD for cheap?
When I do find a HD can I just drag the library icon from my finder into the HD? Should I reformat it since this is the only place my photos are stored? Please give me the best advice you can to ensure that my events, faces, places, etc are safe.
    Thanks

    Hi, you buy a MacBookPro & then want a "cheap" ext HD..c r a z y""""
The Hd you need will depend on the size of your iPhoto Library..
The WD ext/portable HD's are very cost effective..
Format it for Mac..Go into your Home folder -> Pictures -> drag-N-drop from there..
If yoy have a small iphoto library you might be able to use an iPod depending on gb size..

  • IPhoto library won't complete upgrade

I recently upgraded to iPhoto 9.3 and when I opened the program, it said that my iPhoto library (1.47GB) needed to be upgraded as well. The blue bar says step 9 of 9 100% complete, but it won't go away and the white spinning icon thing keeps spinning and spinning for hours and now I have to force quit the program to get it to stop. I've tried reinstalling the program as well as reinstalling the iPhoto library from a back up disk to run the upgrade over again and it remains stuck. I have no idea what to do, please help. I'm running Lion btw.

It should be noted that there is no "Rebuild Library" option when you start iPhoto with option-command.
There are 4 radio buttons choices, the one that seems to work is the fourth one : "Rebuild Database".

  • My iPhoto Library is huge - over 800GB

Hello, I'm running Yosemite on a new Mac mini (late 2014) with iPhoto 9.6. My single iPhoto Library file is over 800GB at this point.
I would love some best practices on how to manage this file as it is getting big and I'm afraid the file will get corrupted - it's also hard to manage backups (I have redundant backups on Time Machine and external HDD. I already had to restore the file once from a backup.
Could you please provide some options on:
    1) how to parse out the existing iPhoto Library to smaller sizes (i.e. one file per year?)
    2) should I upgrade to Aperture or Lightroom? Would this help with anything?
    3) I assume I should start a new iPhoto Library starting in 2015?
I'm sure this is an FAQ - please point me to some good posts, if available. Thanks in advance.

it's also hard to manage backups (I have redundant backups on Time Machine and external HDD. I already had to restore the file once from a backup.
The Time Machine backups should be automatic, if you include the drive with your iPhoto in your regular Time Machine backup.  The second backup to an external drive would best be done with a cloning application that can do incremental backups like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper, so only the first backup would take a long time.
Could you please provide some options on:
    1) how to parse out the existing iPhoto Library to smaller sizes (i.e. one file per year?)
iPhoto Library Manager could do that - the full, paid version. But splitting your library would make your library less useful, since you can no longer search all photos at once. Having to switch between libraries is tedious.
    2) should I upgrade to Aperture or Lightroom? Would this help with anything?
I don't have much experience with Lightroom. Upgrading to aAperture is useful, if you want advanced editing options and more  ways to search a large library based on metadata tags. An Aperture library is easier to navigate, if you take the time to explore Aperture's advanced features. Aperture supports to manage huge libraries distributed across several drives. But upgrading to a professional application would only be necessary, if there are things that you would want to do in iPhoto, that iPhoto cannot do. Aperture can open your iPhoto library without any need to migrate, and iPhoto can open the Aperture library. Only problem, apple announced that neither Aperture nor iPhoto will be further developed. Apple to replace Aperture and iPhoto with Photos for OS X early next year | 9to5Mac
    3) I assume I should start a new iPhoto Library starting in 2015?

  • Transferring iPhoto Library to External Drive/Time Machine

    Hi LarryHN and Terrence Devlin (and any others who can answer my questions);
I have successfully transferred my iPhoto Library for the first time to an new external drive (thank you LarryHN and Terrence Devlin for your awesome threads). Would I be able to do this again when my iPhoto Library on my laptop requires another transer without changing the first transfer?
However, another part of LarryHN's thread is that the iPhoto Library transfer to an external drive is not a back up, why is it not considered a back up? I am trying to utilize Time Machine (also for the first time) but they are recommending I use an external drive with nothing on it (as they would be wiped out). Luckily I haven't wiped out my iPhoto Library on my laptop and am willing to re-do that after I set up Time Machine.
    I appreciate your recommendations!

If you're running the library on the EHD as your working library then it's not a backup, it's your working copy.
To have a backup you must have two copies of the the working library on different hard drive.  so to use Time Machine you need a dedicated HD just for it.  When set up TM will backup your MB Air hard drive and any other EHD connected to it.
If you need to run your library from an EHD because your MBA doesn't have enought room and you want to use TM to backup your files including the iPhoto Library you'll need to have 2 EHDs.
So where do you want to run the library: on your MBA or on the EHD?
If you intend to run the library on your MBA make sure it's up to date and then reformat the EHD as OS X Extended (journaled) with Disk Utility. Connect it to the MBA and launch TM.  It will ask if you want to use that drive for you backup and click yes. From there it's automatic.  The first backup will take a while so have your MBA plugged in to a power outlet and let TM do it's thing.
This website has the best information on TM available: Apple  OSX  and  Time  Machine  Tips
An alternate solution would be to use a backup application that can make incremental backups like Synk Pro.  It will copy only those new or modified files from your working library to the backup copy on the EHD. I use it and have it configured to do the copy as soon as I quit out of iPhoto to keep the writing to disk at a minimum. Synk Pro will backup any selected file or folder you select so it doesn't have to be the entire hard drive if you don't want it. Personally I think TM would be a better solution for you as it will backup other files that may be important to you, i.e. music, documents, movies, etc.

  • Importing my iPhoto library into Aperture.  Best way to avoid duplicates?

    Hi,
I'm a new Mac user.  I have been in the very slow and tedious process of transferring my photos from my HP hard drive to my Mac.  I used iPhoto for a very brief time before purchasing Aperture 3.  (I've used photoshop for years.)  I haven't yet Imported or consolidated or whatever the correct term would be the iPhoto library into the Aperture library.  I've been avoiding it because I know there are some duplicates.  Mainly just a few "Events" from the last few weeks before starting using Aperture.  Now with the new update, it seems like it's a great time to get it all consolidated into an Aperture library that I can use in both iPhoto and Aperture.  What's the easiest way for me to proceed?  I'm sorry for my lack of proper Mac terms....I'm learning!
Thanks so much for your help!

    Clear as mud??
If you want to see all your images - those now in your Aperture Library and those in your iPhoto Library- then you need to merge both Libraries into one Library - I'd import your iPhoto Library into the Aperture Library.
This combined Library will be compatible with both Applications.
To merge your iPhoto Library into the Aperture Library do the following:
Make a backup of your current iPhoto library (libraries)
Upgrade to iPhoto 9.3, if you have not already done so.
Open your iPhoto Library at least once in Photo 9.3 to upgrade the Library.
Unhide all hidden images. You cannot unhide them when viewing the Library in Aperture.
    Quit iPhoto.
If you have not already upgraded to Aperture 3.3, do it like this:
    Backup your current Aperture library.
Rebuild the Aperture Database using the Aperture Library First Aid Tools: Launch Aperture with the cmd-options-key combination (⌘⌥) firmly held down, then select  "Rebuild Database".
After rebuilding upgrade to Aperture 3.3 and launch Aperture to upgrade the Aperture Library.
With Aperture still open, double click your iPhoto Library. Aperture will prompt you, if you want to add or merge your iPhoto Library - choose "Merge". This will avoid importing duplicate images, as far as Aperture can tell that those are the same images - same filename.
You will have to weed out some duplicates yourself - this is best be done by sorting the images by capture date, then duplicate shots will appear side by side.
Post back, if you have more questions.

  • Difference between iPhoto Library and Package

    Hi,
Out for 4 iPhoto libraries on my iMac, only my daughters is shown as "Kind" = "Package".  All others show "Kind" = "iPhoto Library".
I need to move my daughters Libray to the Mac Mini Server as all or albums are gettnig too big.  All libraries moved ok and working except my daughters.
When I open the working library packages and compare to my daughters all files look the same. As my daughters library "Kind" is shown as "Package" iPhoto Manager  and iPhoto will not recognise it.
My daughter wants me to try to keey all the faces and other tags she's addded to the photos ....
My Christmas will be **** if I can't solve this and am running out of ideas!   Any and all help welcomed.
    Chris.

All the folders and files in this "Package" seem to be the same as the ones found in a new "iPhoto Library" I've just created. What am I missing?

  • Iphoto library merge / Copy

i have one iphoto library on the external hard disk (older photos) and one on the mac book air,
since the hard disk on the mac book is now full i want to migrate this library with the one on the external disk. how do i best do this without overwriting the old library ? can i just giv it another name to have two on the external disk or can i actually merge the two into one

You can give it another name (iPhoto library 1)
You need additional dsoftware to merge libraries - iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - can merge libraries  --  it also can move events between libraries

  • What to do with old iPhoto library after migration to Photos

After migration to Photos my hard drive is maxed out. I want to move the 15gigs old iPhoto library to an external drive to free some space as some have suggested. Others here have said you can just trash the old library. There must be a reason 10.10.3  was designed to retain the iPhoto library. Trash it--really? Another suggestion was to put my 15 gigs on a flash drive. So the question is: does Photos need to be able to see the iPhoto library as it would if on an external drive connected to my Time Machine?

Thanks for your reply but I'm still confused as to how I lost over 10Gigs of HD space after the migration. I understand the conversion is supposed to create more space, not less.  When I look in the pictures folder in Finder, I see 2 LIbrarys, iPhoto and Photos, each of them approx 15 Gbs. according to the Get Info menu.  I guess what I don't understand is if the iPhotos Library is not needed and is moved to an external drive why that wouldn't free that amount of space.
Also, if "optimization" is supposed to move "some" high res images to the cloud to make room on the HD, how is it that I find myself with only 1gb left on my HD? What is the criteria that triggers "optimization" and how much room can we expect it to shoot for? There seems to be a variety of answers on this subject, many of them sound like guesses. Apple's explanation is vague about how it works, so hopefully someone has the accurate, in depth scoop on this.

    Dear all,
I am guessing, this is not the end for accessing to my iphoto (last update) library, my life memories, but after upgrade to OSX Yosemite, my iphoto library, located on time capsule (+/- 50G) does not load at all. I have sent the report to Apple.

    That is a bad idea
1 - since you have files on the same disk as your backup you have no backup for those files which apparently includes you photos - having no b means it is just a matter of time until you lose them
2 - The TimeMachine backup grows until it fills the volume it is on - when the TC is full iphoto (and maybe other programs) will stop workig due to lack of space
You need at least two external hard drives - one for the iPhoto library (this one needs to be directly connected with a fast wired connection like Thungrbolt, Firewire or USB and be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) ) and a separate EHD for  you TM backup

  • How can I restore an older, large iPhoto library?

I switched from a laptop [MacBook Pro 15inch 2.53GHz Mac OS X (last job I left)] to all I could afford... Mac Mini... I kept my rather large iPhoto library (132gig approx) on an external Hard Drive. Somewhere along the line, after switching to the Mini, my iPhoto stopped being able to access my old iPhoto library from my external hard drive.
Please help if you can... Somegood pictures and videos
    So Grateful, (*-*)

    THe critical question is
One thing you could check immediately is the formatting of your external drive. Is it formatted MacOS X Extended? The current iPhoto 9.4.x will not open libraries on a disk with the wrong formatting. You should see the formatting in the Get Info panel - select the drive in the Finder and press  the key combination ⌘I.
Does the format show as MacOS X Extended (Journaled)?
Withou answering specific questions it is not possible to assist - without correct and complete information we would only be making wild guessses and might make things worse
Other questions that you did not answer
What is your current iPhoto version?
What exactly is happening, when you are trying to use your iPhoto library on the external drive? Do you get an error message? If yes, which message?
And which iPhoto version created your iPhoto library? We need to know more, to be able to help.
Also please verify that your profile is correct and that you have OS X version 10.7.5

  • "You cannot copy 'iPhoto Library' to the destination because ...

++its name is the same as the name of an item on the destination, except for the case of some characters."
This is the error message I get when I attempt to copy my iPhoto Library folder (58.07 GB) from my Macintosh HD to my (just purchased) Lacie 1TB 'Rugged" external hard drive.
I partitioned the external hard drive (using Disk Utility) - the partition table is GUID and the drive is formatted MAC OS Extended (Journaled). The partition to which I want to copy the iPhoto Library is named 'Images'. There is no way that there is anything on there called iPhoto Library.
I need to backup my iPhoto Library so that I can erase (re-format) my hard drive on my MacBook prior to installing OS X 10.6.x !!
I'm terrified that I will lose my 15,000 plus images saved in iPhoto if I cannot resolve this issue.
Can anyone please offer any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem?
    Cheers

Thank you for your response LarryHN. I do use SuperDuper and I have made a full bootable copy of my Macintosh HD drive on a different partition of the Lacie 'Rugged'.
However, I thought that may not solve my problem because I'm presently running 10.5.8 and I need to erase my Macintosh HD and reformat it to get rid of the Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled) formatting.
If I were to re-format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install OS X 10.6 wouldn't trying to 'restore' from the Super Duper backup send me back to 10.5.8???
Please excuse my ignorance because I'm really not sure about how 'restores' work - I thought it would send me backwards .....
    Cheers

  • I'm trying to import photos from my iphoto library, but keep getting a message saying I cant import from 7.1.5, that I need to upgrade to 7.1.5 or later.  But I have version 8.1.2.  I don't know what to do. I've been able to import in the past.

Sounds like an issue with the iPhoto Library
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
