IPhoto Performance issues at 5,000 photos, /15Gb
My name is Mike and we have a 17 flat-panel iMac 800MHz G4. We have an 80Gb hard drive with 20Gb still free. iPhoto takes ~ 15Gb with a mere 5,000 photos, ~ 2,000 of which are from the 4 megapixel digital camera (2-3Mb per pic).
I have experienced severe performance issues in the past few months as we approached and surpassed 5,000 photos (I almost exclusively work with only iPhoto running). First-tier apple 800-support suggests that I need more memory than the current 512k. Process Viewer shows that iPhoto consumes from 10-90% of CPU cycles and usually 40-55% memory, with very infrequent spikes to 66.7%. (only Process Viewer and iPhoto are running.) iPhoto consumes ~ 33-37% of memory when just sitting there when its open and doing nothing else
Im just moving the mouse on the screen to keep the screen saver from kicking in.
Does anybody agree with the assessment that we just need more memory? If it works, and performance improves, do I have reason to believe that we are going to max out ~ 10,000 photos (twice the memory leads to almost twice the pix before performance degrades (drive size notwithstanding)?
Also, if more memory is the solution, then what about the machine prevents memory consumption over 66.7%? Id expect the spikes to be closer to 80% or 90%.
Do newer iMacs have similar issues?
What is the recommended size of the 25,000 pictures Apple notes as the amount all our iPods should be able to hold? If the photos are ~ 2.5Mb apiece (4 megapixels have been standard since 25,000 was first mentioned, and is arguably small compared to the newer 5 & 6+ megapixel cameras flooding the stores today), 25,000 would consume ~ 62.5 Gb by my math larger than all iPods.
On a related note, are iMacs similar to other machines, where their overall performance, iPhoto and otherwise, degrade as drive consumption approaches and surpasses 80% or 90%?
The Apple Store personnel agreed to help me test and install the memory
I will just be stuck with the memory whether or not it works, and Id like to avoid any unnecessary purchased.
Any and all help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
P.S. If you are willing, I'd prefer to discuss your insights on the phone. If you're willing, we can trade phone numbers via e-mail first. Mine is [email protected].
Hi Michael,
I have the same computer, same ram, 26 gigs free.
I have a 3,000 image library at 3 gigs in size.
I use a Canon camera which does not make larger Makernotes in the EXIF data.
If you want to find out more about the large Makernote problem, visit this thread

-Will more memory help speed iPhoto up. It sure will and many have noted that it has.
-the images are converted to a smaller size before they are synced to the iPod.
-There are steps you can take to speed up scrolling in the iPhoto Library.
do not use shadows
do not use outlines
use white for background
view by rolls and keep the rolls closed
when viewing images keep them around 5 or less across in the rows
choose not to "show photo count for albums"
Since your images are quite large it is also advisable to make multiple libraries. Smaller libraries will load and work faster. Use the Option key when launching iPhoto to create and switch between libraries.
You can also use iPhoto Library Manager or iPhoto Buddy to manage your libraries.
iPhoto Library Manager
iPhoto Library Manager documentation
this page will show you everything you can do with iPhoto Library Manager.
You can also try iPhoto Buddy
You should have a t 15% free space on your hard drive. Things get slow after that.

I accidentally copied the contents of my iPhoto to my desktop (6,000+ photos). How do I undo this action?
Open a finder window, go to 'Macintosh HD/Users/<user folder>/Desktop'. You can delete all the items from there. If you had other stuff on your desktop you need to keep, then you could either sort the files by type, or copy the contents of the folder to another location, delete the desktop folder contents, then move back into it what you want to save.

Moving from iPhoto to Aperture with 15,000+ photos
Hi all.
I have iPhoto11 set up as manage mode for 15,000+ photos (around 350 "events"). I was having issues with iPhoto hanging up and being reallly slow when scrolling up and down through the Event layout even with the "thumbnails" or event previews minimized as much as possible. At first I though I might need more ram, so I went from 2 gigs to 8gigs, but not much of a change. Another discussion board advised I switch to Aperture3 due to its ability to manage larger libraries such as mine.
So I've installed A3, and proceded to "import" my iPhoto library. My questions are..
1) I "TimeMachine" my iPhoto lib., therefore I have a ~24gig iphoto "file" on the laptop and backed up to external drive. When I "imported" to A3, A3 created a ~24gig "file" as well. However, when I opened a photo in A3 and do a "locate photos on..or locate file, etc ...it points to the iPhoto lib. What the? Why not point within the A3 "managed file"??
2) In iphoto if I remove red-eye or crop a photo, there is the master untouched photo and the edited version. What gets imported over to A3?
3) Should I have exported iPhoto to reference then imported those reference photos as managed in A3?
ThanksiPhoto is good for 250,000 images. Usual causes for slowness in iPhoto include damaged cache files, HD issues, and even corrupted pref files.

How does Time Machine relate to this question? When you imported the iPhoto Library where did you tell Aperture to store the files?

Both

No, you need to make that choice in the import dialogue

IPhoto's deleted over 2,000 photos!!!
I was using iPhoto to send slideshows to iDvd, iPhoto had crashed a few times already, it crashed again and when I reopened it I had about 700 photos, before i'd had just under 3,000!!
I changed nothing in-between it crashing and reopening with the pics missing, didn't even click the mouse. I've rebuilt the entire library (checked the box to look for orphaned photos), I've repaired disk permissions and done everything else I've known to help solve problems, nothing has helped.
I have iPhoto 6.0.3, all the latest updates.
Reorganizing 2,000+ photos is a scary thought, please someone help me!!!Malk:
First look in your iPhoto Library folder at the Originals folder. Inside should be a folder for each roll in the library. Check them out to see if all the originals are there. Often iPhoto will lose its link to them and they will still be there in those folders.
If they are there try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It creates a new, separate library and rebuilds from scratch, reading the info from the old library's data files. It has succeeded where the regular rebuild does not. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead. -
My wife is converting from iPhoto to Aperture due to large library ( 33,000 photos, 109GB). Performance-wise, is it better to convert to Aperture library and leave on the 250GB internal drive or convert and store externally?
You are welcome.
convert and store externally?
What versions of iPhoto and Aperture is your wife using? With both iPhoto 9.3 or later and Aperture 3.3 or later she simply could open her iPhoto library in Aperture and be done, since these versions are using a unified library format.

How can I archive 5,000+ photos in iPhoto
i have managed to accumulate over 5,000 photos in iPhoto and i think they are slowing down my mac mini. they slow down opening iPhoto.
is there a way to archive them so i can access them if i want but don't have to have them all show up in iPhoto?
i have an external hard drive and am tempted to move them onto that although i don't know how i would get time machine to stop overriding them.Jane,
The size of your library doesn't sound like it would be a problem, but to try to give you a suggestion to the premise of your question...
This probably won't help you on your immediate issue, but you may want to consider occasionally closing a library and starting a new one. This keeps the size manageable and easy to backup to a dvd size disc.
Of course it depends on each user and how and what they are doing, but for example, I shoot my son's rugby team each year. Each year I start a new iphoto library (ie: rugby09, rugby10, etc), separating last year from this year, etc.
This gets the old picts off your computer as you are finished with them.
Only rugby pictures go into these libraries. I have other separate libraries for other topics (grand-daughter, race cars, etc).
I can justify my method since I don't ever run into a project where I would need to be working with rugby, grand-daughter, and car picts at the same time.
This method may not work for you or everybody, but it works for me and allows me to keep topics/libraries to a manageable size and easily backed up. It's not perfect, but it works for now.
Of course with today's larger MP cameras, images and libraries are forever growing larger and larger, so even using my method, a dvd is very much out dated in regards to it's capacity. Hopefully BluRay burners will become mainstream soon and allow daily backups of 25GBs of data per disc. -
And how do I turn off FACES?
I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto. It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!
According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac
That is it

80,000 photos - Is it time to leave iPhoto?
I have over 80,000 photos in iPhoto on 4 computers and 2 or 3 externals, most are organized into events or albums, lots of duplicates, a lot of edited photos.
I really need to combine all the libraries, sort out all the duplicates, but also keep things organized. I have tried many times to import photos from one computer to another, but this always compounds the mess. iPhoto doesn't seem to recognize duplicates and happily adds them to the library, even though the meta data appears identical.
I do want one library with the following:
- served from a central NAS
- keep existing edits, Events, and Albums intact
- to use multiple computers to add to Master Library
- efficient sorting of duplicates
I don't want:
- to switch between multiple libraries.
- to start from scrach in reorganizing.
- I don't really need editing capabilities beyond what iPhoto is capable of (Aperature editing is too complex for our needs.)
The computers are MacBooks and iMacs running various versions of iPhoto '08-current. I have a 3TB NAS Raid to serve from.
1. Is iPhoto the correct solution for this size photo collection?
2. Is there an efficient way to combine everything and still use iPhoto?
ThanksUse iPhoto Library Manager to merge iPhoto Libraries. The version with this capability requires a $20 purchase. It can be set to avoid duplicates in the process.
iPhoto is good for 250,000 images.
Note that iPhoto is not a server application. Only one user can open the Library at a time. So if one user is logged in the others are locked out. Server apps start at about the $200 mark or so.
Bluntly, if the NAS is central to your plans just forget about iPhoto. You can't run an iPhoto Library from a NAS. I also would not recommend running this set up wirelessly. If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
If you're fixed on using the NAS you'll be exporting from iPhoto and starting over with another app.

I have over 50,000 photos in the current iPhoto Library. I need to download 3,000 more from trip to Spain. Can/should I make a new iPhoto Library? How do I do that?
1) I had the same problem bedeviling me for over a month
(with the Apple Store people unable to figure out a solution!).
It turned out that the solution was exceedingly simple and easy:
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/18554/why-isnt-iphoto-11-showing-an-eve nt-present-in-the-library
I have no idea how it happened, but like Asbjornu, "I had managed to sort the events "manually" (View > Sort Events > Manually) which hid the newly created events in-between my rather large amount of existing events. Sorting by date (View > Sort Events > By Date + Descending) shows my new events first in the list as they should."
I left out a huge whoop when this (simple) command solved everything.
2) Yes, you can create another iPhoto library
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2505?viewlocale=en_US
To create a new photo library:
Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
In the window that appears, click Create New.
Type a name and choose a location to store the new photo library.
Click Save.
Afterwards, iPhoto will sometimes ask which library you want to open.
3) As far as the corrupted iPhoto is concerned,
trash or anything else, try rebuilding iPhoto (but
only after making a copy of your current iPhoto
library on an external disk, naturally).
Once the copy is made, close iPhoto, and
wait until you won't be using iPhoto or your computer for a long time
(like before you go to bed). Close all other apps, or as many as possible,
and reopen iPhoto while holding down the Option and Command keys
at the same time. Keep the buttons down until you get a page with a series
of half a dozen unmarked boxes or more, mark them ALL, launch rebuild,
and come back in the morning… -
My concern is I accidentally deleted something associated with the application; I was trying to free up some space on my Mac. I have over 10,000 photos in my iPhoto!! I should figure out how to back up my photos, assuming I can regain access to them.... Why will iPhoto not open....it just spins then gives me this lengthy problem report.
THANKS A MILLION.... but please remember my username when you reply, I am so new to Macs that you may need to dumb it down for me...

From Finder, hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Go menu at the top of the screen
Select Library from the drop down menu
Then navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets
Right click on the 'sub' folder and choose Compress
Drag the resulting zip file to your Desktop (as a backup)
Go to your System Preferences and choose iCloud
Turn OFF the iCloud Photos option
Go back to Library > Application Support and DELETE the iLifeAssetManagement folder
Now, in System Preferences, turn the iCloud Photos option ON
iPhoto should now be able to launch. Give it enough time to re-download your Photo Stream content. if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old), unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto. -
I'm running iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5. My collection of 25,000 photos on iPhoto library is completely empty. How can I get them back?
I dragged one photo to the My Pictures folder in Finder. I knew it was just one photo because it was the only one highlighted in yellow. When I saw it in Finder, it was labled iPhoto. I thought it was the wrong picture, so in Finder I deleted the file. When I got back to iPhoto, EVERYTHING was missing. Events, photos, recent, and even trash. At this point, I went into my Trash. I searched for iPhoto and iPhoto was there. I opened it and it was still empty. All I want to do is to get my collection of photos back!Best solution is to load your backup from before you did this?
Where did you drag the photo from?
Have you tried dragging it from the trash to the desktop? What size is it?
What size is your iPhoto library in the pictures folder?

I have MacBook Pro. I have my iPhoto library on external hard drive only. It has 30,000 photos on it. I have bought a 2nd external hard drive and would like to copy my iPhoto library onto it as a back up. I tried plugging both in and dragging the iPhoto library into the 2nd external harddrive. It looked as though it was working as it said 20 hours, however I then got a message box saying FiNader could not complete the task due to incompatible files. How do I do this please.

Yes, you should format the HD.
A Mac can natively write to a NTSF drive and that is what most drives com formatted with.
You should use the Mac journaled format.
Once again you are posting incorrect information
Until we know what format the drive is it is impossible to state that it must be formatted - that is just a guess
And a Mac can not Natively write to an NTSF drive - it can natively read it but can not write to it with special software
And since formatting a drive erases it it is critical to tell users not to format until they have a positively known good backup
The TOU for these forum state that you should test your answers prior to posting them -- you obviously are not doing that and you advice is endangering users photos - please only post tested answers

The hard drive on our laptop crashed and we took it to the apple store and they said we can transfer all files photos and videos over to another mac laptop via a special cable. We did that and everything for the two users transferred over to the other laptop fine including 80,000 photos. We got the laptop fixed and my husband transferred everything back to our laptop. In his profile (he’s the administrator) his iPhoto library has all 7900 of his photos in it as well as all his events and albums that he created prior to it crashing. It’s organized exactly how he had it; however, in my profile, my iPhoto library is empty. I had over 9,000 photos in it and like 65 events and a couple of albums and it’s completely empty yet when he transferred everything back to our mac, he it showed that 80,000 photos were transferred as well. Do you know where all those photos could possibly be stored?
Yes you can move the book but not by exporting
The book is just entries in the iPhoto database so the only way to transfer it is ot transfer the entire library it is in - you can make a "mini" library containing only one book to make the transfer easier - see Old Toad's tutorial #9 - http://oldtoadstutorials.net/No._9.html
You also can save a PDF of the book and transfer that but you can not edit pr process it

Having an Issue with Creating a photo Book in Iphoto. I continue to get an error message when clicking on "Buy Book" The error indicates that I'm missing a frame or frames from the book. I've checked this many times and cannot locate the issue. The book appears to be complete from my perspective. What can I do now? I worked very hard on this and would hate to lose it all.
How did you check the book? Did you preview it?
See:
iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture
Is that the message?
"your book seems to have frames on one or more pages that do not contain photos. You must either change the layout of those pages or place photos in those frames before you can buy this book."
The most common reason for this error is, that you have used a page layout that needs a background photo and you have not yet added the backdrop. Then the book is still showing some default grayscale image.
Check, if one of your page layouts is using this background:
Then you need to add a photo to the background of the page.
