IPhoto v. 9.0 won't open

Hi,
I have an iMac 2.4GHz core duo and am running 10.6.8. I recently tried to open iPhoto (v. 9.0) and it said I needed to update it via software update in order for it to open. I tried that, bbut the only update available had nothing to do w/ iPhoto (it was a security update). I went to my iLife '11 install disk and reinstalled iPhoto using Pacifist, when I went to open it, I got the message that I still needed to update it. I found a 9.2 beta version, but that is only compatible w/ Lion. Please, does anyone know what is going on? Thanks for any and all help!

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change.

Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change. (Mac OS X 10.7.5)

Did you migrate the app from Time Machine? Reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
The reference to NovaMedia is that there is the remanant of an older app in there somewhere that won't run on 10.7

  • Iphoto 8.1.2 won't open

iphoto 8.1.2 won't open. The error message says "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
My version is Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks
    JC

Two possibilities - the message is correct or is incorrect
If you have opened your iPhoto library with a newer version of iPhoto (over a netwrok or any other way) you were warned that it would be converted and could not be used by an older version - in that case you must either upgrade, restore a backup from before you upgraded teh library or use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to "doengrade" the library
If you have not opened it with a newer version then Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • Did an update for iphoto and now it won't open

I just did a recent update for iphoto and now it just freezes and won't open.

As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

  • Lion 10.7.4 -iphoto, safari and mail won't open

I just bought four iMacs for my school. Two of them won't open the mail, iphoto or safari. I have spent quite a bit of time with the Apple rep, but at this point, he has run out of ideas. I have reinstalled Lion - not a clean install, but hate the thought of the long process that involves. Did a clean install of iphoto, but so far,

I just moved this post to the Quicktime discussions as I think it's more appropriate there.

  • IPhoto update from iLife06 won't open HP Scans. Help?

I decided to install iLife06 and had instant problems. I have a 2.5 Dual G5 running 10.3.9. and am using an HP 4890 scanner. Prior to installing the iPhoto update as part of iLIfe06, everything worked fine. I would scan a photo and transfer it to iPhoto and open it and work on it and whatever. Now...scans won't open in iPhoto. No matter how I try to sneak the scan into iPhoto, (via Preview, etc.), it won't open, freezes and has to be force quit. Reinstalled HP software to no avail. All the prior scans done on the same HP 4890, that were already in iPhoto, open fine, but new ones....nada. Had issue with iWeb too, not happy with this iLife06...how do I get rid of it, get back the old iPhoto, and back to serenity? If I use the original disks can I just install the old iPhoto?

    Hi redcatres,
I do not know the answer of why the scans are not opening in iPhoto. Do you scan and save to a folder (not the iPhoto Library folder), then import into iPhoto?
To get back to iPhoto 5, you would really need a backup of the iPhoto 5 Library folder that has not been updated to version 6 in order to keep your metadata such as comments and keywords, and also all your albums, slideshows, books.
You can go back to 5 if you do not have a version 5 backup, but you will have to reimport your photos and lose your metadata.
    Steps:
    To reinstall iPhoto 5
Drag the iPhoto Library folder in the Pictures folder to the desktop and rename it it iPhoto 6 library
Navigate to /Applications and drag iPhoto to the trash
Navigate to /Library/Receipts and drag all iPhoto receipts to the trash
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and drag com.apple.iPhoto.plist to the trash.
Insert your iLife 5 CD/DVD and choose to do a custom install. You will have to keep ongoing through the steps of the install before you get to the screen where you can choose a custom install.
    Install iPhoto.
Run Software Update and update iPhoto to the latest version of 5
Put your backup iPhoto 5 library in the Pictures folder and launch iPhoto.
If you do not have a backup iPhoto 5 library:
Open the iPhoto 6 library folder on the desktop
-double click the iPhoto Library folder on the desktop to open it
-the two main folders you will need to import are the Original folder and the Modified folder (only if you want to import the edited images).
-the Originals folder has all your originals photos unedited. the Modified folder has all images that you have edited, rotated, cropped, etc.
-Drag these two folders to the desktop
-If you want to save the edited image, find it in the roll in the Modified folder and drag it into the roll of the same name in the Originals folder. It will replace the originals and now will be the original.
-If you don't care to save any edited images, then don't import the Modified folder into iPhoto or don't bother replacing the edited image with the original image like I just described.
-If you import the Originals folder into iPhoto you will have all your originals in their named rolls.
-If you import the Originals and Modified folders into iPhoto, you will have all of the being in the originals folder in the finder. The roll with the same name as the other will have a _1 appended to it's name (in the finder)
-the roll from the originals will be next to the same roll from the Modified folder within iPhoto. You can then delete any of the images from there if you want.
I know this might sound confusing but it really isn't.
Get back if any of this sounds like something you might want to do.

It's missing background frameworks that it needs to run:
      Library not loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/Python
Thing is that is a System level framework - i.e I don't believe that reinstalling the app will do the job. But I may be worng.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

    2c: on 10.7 they're at

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

  • Just Updated to 10.9.5 Now iPhoto 8.1.2 Won't Open-Microsoft Word & Excel Won't Open

I have a MacBook Pro now running 10.9.5
I updated last night to the 10.9.5 version and after doing so my iLife applications stop working: iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand
My Microsoft Word and Excel stop working as well.
Every time i try to open these applications i get error and they just won't open.
" iPhoto quit unexpectedly wile using the iPhoto plug-in"
I get this same message for all my applications.
I tried getting help from Apple and all they really told me was that I may need to update to my iPhoto by paying $15 bucks.
I'm upset that my applications have all failed me only after updating to new 10.9.5
This update was done at 10:30PM, all day my Microsoft Apps and iPhoto app were working fine and now I'm out of luck?

iLife 11 is only available thru 3rd party retailers like Amazon.com or eBay.com.  That will install iPhoto 9.0 and you can get to 9.4.3 vis these updaters:
1 - update to iPhoto 9.2.1 - you may be able to go from here directly to 9.4.3
    2 - update to iPhoto 9.3
    3 - update to iPhoto 9.3.2
    4 - update to iPhoto 9.4
    5 - and finally to iPhoto 9.4.3

After i changed this setting: autologin. into login with password i restarted the computer.
it started up with a blank personal surrounding. also my .pages and .numbers documents were gone, personal settings gone, iphoto won't open and office programs wo'nt open.
in finder i can find several .doc documents and i can see that all my pictures are still on the system, But i can't open them.
i was so stupid not to use time machine. But is there way to recover the system with my documents or something??
    please help.
System Imac i5 intel 21.5 inch
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)

Nope, without any backup they're probably gone for good. If you want you can purchase some data recovery software such as Data Rescue. I hope this may be a lesson why it's critical to backup your system, Time Machine is a good place to start.
BTW when posting please use proper grammar, it's difficult to read a post when no caps are used.
    Good luck!

  • IPhoto 9.6 Library won't open

    iPhoto 9.6 (910.29)
Loaded the new iPhoto with Yosemite.  I have most of my photos stored on an external drive in a file named iPhoto Library which properly displays the correct application icon.  After loading Yosemite I plugged in the external drive to open my photos.  iPhoto launched, displayed a message that the pictured needed to be "converted" (though they opened fine under Mavericks) so I said "OK".  There's about 45GB of photos stored.  Now, the file size indicates the same and iPhoto application is launched when I double-click or directly open iPhoto and select the library . . . BUT the photos will not display.  Instead, the file is apparently being read as a NEW library and a "yellow-sticky" instruction pops up telling me how to load new photos.
So, anybody have any ideas on how to FORCE OPEN ann iPhoto Library file under the new iPhoto 9.6?
I am on a MacBook Air.  My wife still has Mavericks on her MacBook Pro.  The iPhoto Library will no longer open on her Mac either.

    iPhoto library upgrader
The library upgrader is a tool to prepare older iPhoto Libraries for migrating them to iPhoto '11 or later. See iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
To update or upgrade the iPhoto application to a new version, you need to download an update for the iPhoto from the AppStore.
To update iPhoto to version iPhoto 9.6:
    Launch the AppStore.
Open the "Store" menu. Sign in with your AppleID.
Check the Updates page, if an update for iPhoto is waiting.
If there is no update, delete your current iPhoto from the Applications folder and open the "Purchased" tab of the AppStore. If iPhoto is listed with "Accept", press the "Accept" button  and then "install".
If iPhoto is listed without "Accept", press the Install button.
If iPhoto is completely missing from "Purchased", go to the main page of the App Store, search for iPhoto, and buy the upgrade. It should be listed as a "Free" purchase.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what happens when you try to launch iPhoto?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?

  • IPhoto 8.0.2 won't open

I installed iLife 09 several weeks ago, and all was working well. Today I tried open iPhoto and it won't respond, just tries to load until I finally force quit. What's happening? I tried opening from inside my Apps older, from the dock, and by saving an email jpg (from a trusted source), but nothing works.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    2. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
