IPod as a disk drive

Sorry if this has been covered before, I've not had a lot of time to search the forums, and wanted a quick response!
I’ve set my iPod to be treated as a disk drive and I can explore it with no problems via Windows Explorer.
Rather than using iTunes to import all my tracks is it possible to copy folders & files directly to the iPod via Windows Explorer?
I tried dumping some MP3 files into the iPod folder which worked, but the iPod doesn’t recognise the tracks I’ve copied.
Thanks for in advance any advice!

You can't drag and drop mp3's onto the iPod and expect them to play (on the iPod). Apple's implementation of putting music on the iPod uses files (iTunesDB, iTunesControl, etc) to allow the iPod's O/S to keep track of what is playable on the iPod.
To allow "drag-n-drop", you have to use a third party software.

You cannot.  This is not a feature of the ipod touch.

    Device:
    Apple i-pod nano 1st generation
    Issues:
...i-pod not listed in "My Computer"
    ...i-pod not connecting to i-tunes
...The "Do Not Disconnect" does appear on the i-pod's face screen.
...If the i-pod is connected via usb port to my computer prior to turning the computer on, then Windows will not boot up. I have to unplug the usb cable so that Windows will boot up.
...Same with i-tunes. The i-pod can not be connected to my computer prior to opening i-tunes or the program will not open. Once I unplug the usb cable, then i-tunes opens up immediately.
...Did verify that I have the latest version of i-tunes installed.
...In Device Manager, "USB Mass Storage Device" is listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
...Right clicked on the above to update drivers...pop up window indicates the best drivers are already installed.
..."Appe Ipod USB Device" is listed under Disk Drives in the Device Manager
My computer is running Windows Vista.
My kids both have an i-pod touch and they sync / connect without any problem.
Could the problem be that my computer is confusing my i-pod for a disk drive? Or does anyone see what the problem may be based on the issues I have listed?
Any suggestions on how to fix this frustrating problem?
    Thanks for the help.
    Marsha

the ipod is suppose to be seen as a disk drive. if you don't like that, then in itunes uncheck "enable disk usage"
"ipod not listed in itunes" do have another computer you can plug this into? and the booting issue is a windows problem, it will do that for certain devices, i cant have my psp plugged is while it boots.
    have you reinstalled itunes?

  • IPod recognized as disk drive by WinXP but not seen in iTunes or iUpdater

    HELP!!
A few short weeks ago I was ecstatic when I received my new iPod video as a Christmas gift. Imagine my dismay as I have been trying to get the darn thing to connect to iTunes ever since!
I have gone through the Apple website troubleshooting, have spent HOURS with a MAC "genius" and we still can't figure out what's going on.
The device has been restored and iTunes/Updater have been removed and re-installed NUMEROUS times but still can't get my 30G iPod Video to register in iTunes. Apple swears it is my laptop. I've removed everything and re-installed from scratch so I find it hard to believe that it is just my PC.
When I plug it into my USB I get the "Do Not Disconnect" icon that just keeps flashing (guess I should be happy its not freezing anymore!). I can see it as my "E" (Removable Disk) Drive but can't find it with iTunes or iPod Updater (Oct05 and Nov05 versions). It does appear when connected to an Apple store MAC or the Apple store's PC...so maybe it is mine.....?
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

Maybe you solved this or not but I have a suggestion. If you have a PCMCIA slot try adding a usb 2.0 pcmcia card. I was having a world of troubles that have included one already returned 5G 60GB. It was rendered inoperative by a failed restore process. I assumed it was a defective ipod.
Receiving the new one last night it was showing similar behavior to the one I had to replace. I thought my laptop might be a factor. I was already using a compUSA usb 2/FW card with the ipod but after searching I found a post that warned that card is trouble. I just bought a HP USB 2 pcmcia card (US$39) and about 8 gigs of movies was just gulped down by my ipod in one sitting. With the compUSA card it would cough and choke on one movie sometimes.
Sorry for your troubles. Good luck.

  • Moving iTunes library from PC to Mac using iPod as external disk drive

O.K. I read the tutorial on this website on this topic and found it helpful though I haven't tried it yet. My question is - the tutorial examples assumed I would be using 2 macs. But, I am moving the iTunes library from a PC to a Mac (using the iPod as an external disk drive). Is that possible?

Thanks Erik. O.K....one more question... My PB obviously came w/ iTunes installed, and I have already added to it's library. So, is it possible to move my old iTunes library (on the PC) onto my new PB and keep the all of the songs from the PC's library and the Mac's (basically consolidate both libraries into one)? Or will it replace the Mac's library with the imported library from my PC? Thanks for your help.

  • Ipod has been reformatted and now shows up as a removable disk drive any he

I-pod has been reformatted and now shows up in windows as a removable disk drive can not get updater to recognize. any help?

Wow...I never thought there would ever be such a screwy problem like this on such a large scale....has anyone noticed how many similar posts have been posted in the last week or so? Not saying this never happens to anyone--in fact, it's happened to me beofre, but it was simple to fix...but the same problem happening with so many people at about the same time*...I don't know, it's kind of strange...anyway....
Yeah, I'm a Mac/Apple guy to the core, and have been since 7th grade (about 11-12 years now). Yet, I can't help but look at my iPod as if it has self-destructed. I was listening to it (w/ tape adapter, of course) on the way home in the car, then unplugged it for literally five minutes, got into my apartment, plugged it in my dell Latitude, and poof it had been reformatted. So, the moment I plugged it in, its funcionality basically vanished. The 5 R's have been useless thus far, and I can't even reformat using Explorer, because Windows tells me that the 1 GB iPod now has no storage capacity. ***? Strange, strange. Anyhow, sorry for the rambling, but this really confounds and frustrates me. APPLE....HELP US PLEASE!
*Don't get me wrong: I'm not a conspiracy nut; it's just hard to wrap my mind around this right now.

  • Transfering music from pc to mac using iPod as a hard disk drive

I just got MacBook Pro and iPod which I have formatted for a mac, however, I want to get the songs from my IBM thinkpad to my mac. I transfered a bunch of them with a friends external hard drive, but forgot about all my purchused songs from the music store. I am pretty sure there is a way to use the iPod as a hard disk drive but everytime i attach it to my thinkpad it asks if I want to format the iPod and then won't transfer. So I guess my question is can I do this and if I can do I have to format it to windows and then transfer the files to the iPod and will I be able to put the files from my thinkpad to my mac?
    thanks!!!

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. You can reformat your iPod on Windows if you want to use it on both platforms as Macs can read Windows formatting, then you could enable it for disk use on the PC: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

Is there a way to add my movie to my iPod touch 2nd generation tuning 4.2.1

    Hiya!
It depends on what kind of digital copy you have.  This article goes ino details regarding the two types, and depending on the type you have, you may or may not need the DVD to redeem the code.

  • IPod crashed windows when I tried to use it as an external disk drive!

My 30g iPod says it can be used as an external disk drive, but when I tried, I got the blue screen of Death. I need a flash drive for school but can't afford one. How can I make the external disk feature of my iPod work?

I agree with Kappy.. passing files and especially via wireless is slow as slow.
Just need to be sure your TC is the new AC model??
And the OS on the computer is Lion?
Have you completed the setup of the TC via the utility? You do still need to get internet via the TC so it has to be plugged into the main router..

Then we can help you get into it.. whether you should put your files on it is another question.

  • New 80gb iPod works, but not shown as a disk drive... help!

    Hi,
My brand new iPod is not show as a disk drive, even though it shows on iTunes, and has been updated, synchronized.
Even after enabling disk use, it still isn't there.
It is on the device manager, and it says that the device is working ok.
I have restored the iPod, and rebooted several times, but i still can't use it as a hard drive.
    Please can anyone help!
    Regards,
    Adan

hmmmm. occasionally that behavior is a symptom of a Windows drive letter confusion. see:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • IPod being mistaken for PC removable disk drive

I just got an iPod and made the mistake of plugging it in before installing the software. After several uninstall/reinstalls and resets I tried to restore it using the updater because iTunes refused to see it. Something happened and in the middle of the restore it gave me some kind of can not write error. The iPod showed up in my computer as a disk drive and when I tried to click on it it said that it was not formatted so stupidly I reformatted it and now it is beeing seen by the computer as a removable usb drive and the updater won't recognize it so that I can restore the factory settings... What should I do?

try to have it restored by a mac computer than try to restore it again to a pc.mine worked that way.though without having to say that i dont have any problems with the pod and windows

  • Computer wont recognize ipod in disk drive J!?

I recently recieved my Ipod Nano for my birthday, and everything was going as planned until I came back from vacation 2 weeks ago and tried to put more songs on my Ipod.
Once I put my ipod in the connecter which I had been using for the past 3 months, Itunes never came up so I clicked on it and my Ipod was not listed on the lefthand side.
I went to the apple websited and completed all of the 5 R's and still nothing.
I also went under "My Computer" and saw that disk drive J(the ipod drive) was said to be empty, but yet my ipod was plugged in and the screen on my ipod was blinking and said do not disconnect, like normal.
I checked the back of the connecter and the computer and i made sure everything was in tight, but still it claimed drive J, my ipod drive, was empty. Meanwhile all my songs were deleted somehow. I'm not sure how to fix this because I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything and yet nothing has helped!! Someone please help me out, i need my Ipod to work!! Thanks alot!

    Try changing the drive letter?
